Vocational Identity and Agency of Chinese College Students: Effects of Filial Piety and Implications in Career Education

Balancing family obligations and personal aspirations is crucial for college students in making life decisions.This critical review examined empirical studies on the effects of filial piety on college students’vocational identity and agency.According to identity capital theory,college students need a sense of agency to construct identity consciously and adapt to adulthood.Filial piety may profoundly influence this process as the core value and internalized social structure for the role of being an adult child in a Chinese family.However,no studies have been conducted from the identity capital perspective.This review found that filial piety had direct effects on college students'vocational identity and also indirect effects by shaping specific agency competencies.The impact of filial piety on the agency was more likely to occur through providing normative guidance about adult roles,influencing how college students view family as a supportive resource,and perpetuating parenting experiences.Based on these findings,this article suggested further examining the mediating role of agency between filial piety and identity development,as well as the effects of filial piety on the psychological foundation of agency development.This review suggested enhancing the agency of college students and encouraging reflections on filial piety in career education.

Do Child Characteristics Matter to Mitigate the Widowhood Effect on the Elderly’s Mental Health? Evidence from China

This study empirically examines whether child characteristics mitigate the negative impact of widowhood on the elderly’s mental health using follow-up survey data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study(CHARLS).A total of 5,326 older adults aged 60 years and older are selected from three waves of panel data(2013,2015,and 2018).Thefindings suggest that respondents who experienced widowhood exhibit an increase in depressive symptoms.However,the higher income of children and frequent face-to-face emotional interactions improve the mental health of the widowed elderly.Moreover,heterogeneity analyses show that the buffering effect of higher child income is more significant among men and the Midwestern widowed elderly,and frequent face-to-face emotional interactions are more effective in improving the psychological status of women and the Midwes-tern widowed elderly.In the special social and cultural background of China,family members remain the main support for the elderly,and the current social pension system is still imperfect.Therefore,children should strengthen emotional communication with their parents while increasing their economic income.In that way,widowhood can achieve both material and spiritual prosperity.The government should identify the vulnerable groups among the elderly widows and introduce policies aimed at improving their mental health and reducing the disparity in mental health status.

从“孝”的英译谈起

本文通过对“孝”与filial piety的时比研究,指出孝在汉语中丰富、重要的文化内涵,而filial piery恰恰不能传达。作者以文化学派翻译理论为视角,强调翻译对目的语文化的影响,认为时于负载重大文化内涵词语的翻译可依据格赖斯(Grice)会话“合作原则”进行,并建议以Shaoism,the Chinese rooted moralities来翻译“孝”,且辅以注释。

杨树株高性状配合力效应和遗传力的研究

本文主要研究杨树(Poplar)双列杂交株高性状亲本配合力效应(Combining Ability Effect)的分析和遗传力的估算。本文的结果是杂种一代的广义遗传力h_b^2=81.42％,狭义遗传力h_π~2=59.98％,杂种一代组合间变异大部分是由遗传因素决定的,而环境影响较小,加性遗传效应在杂种一代组合间所占比例大,加性基因起了主要作用。

Combination of Piper guineense Essential Oil with Cowpea Varietal Resistance in Control of Cowpea Seed Beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus Fabricius (Coleoptera： Chrysomelidae： Bruchinae)

To reduce the risks associated with over-dependence on synthetic insecticides and ensure leguminous food security, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the potentials of integrating Piper guineense essential oil （PgEO） with cowpea varietal resistance in the control of cowpea seed beetle, Callosobruehus maculatus Fabricius. Four cowpea varieties （Sokoto, Drum, Oloyin and Gwallam） were studied. Data collected included oviposition, progeny emergence, Reproductive Efficiency （RE） and Percentage Seed Damage （PSD）. At first filial generation, numbers of eggs laid on Oloyin variety treated with 25 μL PgEO per 25 g cowpea seeds （2.15） were significantly （p〈0.05） lower than the values obtained in untreated cowpea （3.61） and hexane-treated seeds （3.07）. C. maculatus RE on Oloyin （33.73） was significantly （p〈0.05） lower than values obtained on other varieties （47.34-54.67） for seeds without PgEO; and were significantly greater than 0.00 observed on Oloyin seeds treated with 50 pL PgEO. PSD on Oloyin （6.63%） was significantly （p〈0.05） lower than the values obtained on Sokoto （10.04%） and Drum （9.79%） for seeds without PgEO, while there was no damage in Oloyin treated with 50 pL PgEO. Significantly （p〈0.05） lower F2 progeny emergence occurred on Oloyin （4.02） and Sokoto （4.71） compared with Drum （9.03） and Gwallam （6.07） from the untreated cowpea seeds. The results implied that application of PgEO to Oloyin gave better protection from infestation of C. maculatus than other varieties. Hence, combination of varietal resistance with PgEO for management ofbruchid could be an effective mean of improving cowpea food security.

Huizhou wood carving on ancient buildings has been brilliant in the architectural history of Ming and Qing Dynasty.Huizhou wood carving like other folk arts can not generate and develop without the restriction and influence of the mother culture,among which CHENG and ZHU's Neo-Confucianism has made the most far-reaching influence that advocates feudal ethics and rites,shoulders the function of social civilizing and takes the responsibility to develop ethics and morals.Huizhou wood carving generates under this special regional culture.Therefore,the interpretation and research on traditional ethic culture contained in Huizhou wood carving is of critical significance to the protection of Huizhou wood carving.Filial piety,loyalty,great endurance,marriage harmony,male superiority and female subjugation are the essence of traditional ethic culture,and this field should not be avoided in the research of traditional ethic educational culture.

The Relationships between Family Support, Attachment Types in Adulthood and Attitudes towards Filial Responsibility among Three Generations of Arab and Jewish Men

The aim of the current study was to compare between three generations groups of Arab and Jewish male’s attitudes towards filial responsibility. 121 university students, their fathers (116) and their grandfathers (114), answered a self-report questionnaire, which measured filial responsibility attitudes, type of attachment;self-esteem;sense of mastery and, family support. Results revealed ethnicity and religiosity differences as well as between-generations differences regarding filial responsibility. An additional finding brought to light the cross-generational differences in the relationship between the attachment style in adulthood and the attitudes regarding filial responsibility. The most important finding shows that the Arab male, especially in the youngest generation, finds himself in a socio-psychological-internal conflict between tradition and modernization regarding the family norms. Arab society, in attitudes towards filial responsibility, is still traditional in terms of its approach to the institutions of clan and, the men status within the family. Thus, mostly among the elderly Arab Muslims.

Transition and Contemporary Construction of Filial Culture―From the Village Governance Perspective

The Issue of Intergenerational Equity in the Context of Population Aging:From the Perspective of Confucian Ethics

As the aging population continues to grow in China the issue of intergenerational equity in the field of old-age security has become increasingly prominent. Through a comparative study of the liberal theory of intergenerational equity, this paper shows that at least in the contemporary social context of China, filial piety still acts as an important moral foundation and value basis for the intergenerational distribution of old-age support resources. The emphasis on an intergenerational contract based on filial piety not only presents a theoretical perspective transcending liberalism for addressing the issue of intergenerational equity in the context of contemporary China, but also provides significant and irreplaceable institutional resources. Starting from the Confucian family-centered theory of social justice and through the reconstitution of traditional ethical resources, this paper explores a family-centered, multi-level old-age security system to cope with the issue of intergenerational equity against the backdrop of population aging.

Combined music and play therapy resolves chronic toddler sleep issues: a case report

In this article,the author reports on her clients'case study using a play and music therapy intervention to improve family sleep and resolve chronic toddler sleep issues.The author/composer developed a systemised approach,which has been highly successful since the initial trial in 2010 on her toddler,which had infant sleep issues.Using a three steps approach consisting of routine and'filial therapy',re-connection and lullaby lyrics,and ending with relaxation the instrument component of the music therapy intervention,children and parents enjoy improved bonding,less anxiety,improved sleep outcomes and better health.

The Life Wisdom of Chinese Traditional Filial Piety

Filial piety is not only the core concept of Confucianism,but also an important category of Mohism,Legalism,Taoism and Buddhism.To analyze the essence of Chinese traditional filial piety,we should explore it from the vast classical works of hundreds of schools of thought,and also from the long-term practice of social life of all nationalities and folk culture.I think that although the content of"filial piety"is constantly changing with the times,the wisdom of life contained therein,especially the dialectical thinking of thinking and dealing with filial piety,is the essence of the most universal and lasting value.

A Study on the Development and Transmission of Filial Culture in the Legend of Ding Lan Carved Wood

At present, the protection of the legend of Ding Lan Carved Wood is declining and fails to give full play to its function of building filial culture. Combined with the examination of the contemporary inheritance and protection of the legend of Ding Lan Carved Wood, we make full use of the existing resources of the legend of Ding Lan Carved Wood in urban areas and unite the cities of Xuzhou, Xingping, and Jiaozuo to put forward practical and favorable suggestions for development and inheritance, and jointly promote the exploration of the development and inheritance path of the filial culture of the legend of Ding Lan Carved Wood.

On the Divergence of Piety in Chinese and Western Culture: A Case Study on Euthyphro and The Analects

Piety culture can be traced back to thousands years ago both in Chinese and western cultures.In the classic works Euthyphro and The Analects,piety has different connotations.In the paper,a comparative study on piety between Chinese and western culture is conducted with the exploration and comparison between the origins of piety in different cultures,and the analysis of different parent-child relationships under different piety cultures.It is concluded that both piety culture of China and western countries should be given due attention and respect.

Boosting Seed Development as a New Strategy to Increase Cotton Fiber Yield and Quality

Cotton （Gossypium spp.） is the most important textile crop worldwide due to its cellulosic mature fibers, which are single-celled hairs initiated from the cotton ovule epidermis at anthesis. Research to improve cotton fiber yield and quality in recent years has been largely focused on identifying genes regulating fiber cell initiation, elonga- tion and cellulose synthesis. However, manipulating some of those candidate genes has yielded no effect or only a marginally positive effect on fiber yield or quality. On the other hand, evolutionary comparison and transgenic studies have clearly shown that cotton fiber growth is intimately controlled by seed development. Therefore,I propose that enhancing seed development could be a more effective and achievable strategy to increase fiber yield and quality.

Nitrogen preference across generations under changing ammonium nitrate ratios

Aims Nitrogen(N)in natural environments is typically supplied by a mix-ture of ammonia(NH_(4)^(+))and nitrate(NO_(3)^(-)).However,factors that underlie either NH_(4)^(+)or NO_(3)^(-)preference,and how such preference will change across generations remain unclear.We conducted a series of experiments to answer whether:(i)NH_(4)^(+):NO_(3)^(-)ratio is the driving factor for plant N preference,and(ii)this preference is con-sistent across generations.Methods We conducted both:(i)field observations(as a proxy for parent or P generation)and(ii)greenhouse experiments(the first generation or F1 and the second generation or F2)using corn and soybean grown under different NH_(4)^(+):NO_(3)^(-)ratios.Important Findings Both corn and soybean had the physiological plasticity to pre-fer either NH_(4)^(+)or NO_(3)^(-)depending on NH_(4)^(+):NO_(3)^(-)ratios,and this plasticity was consistent across generations.Corn,however,showed a stronger preference towards NO_(3)^(-)while soybean showed a stronger preference towards NH_(4)^(+).While both plants would try to make use of the most available form of N in their growing medium,plant species,physiological characteristics(e.g.maturity)and plant nutrient status also determined the extent of N uptake.From the evolutionary and productivity perspective,this plasticity is benefi-cial,allowing plants to effectively acquire available N particularly in a changing climate.
