The stability of soil-rock mixtures(SRMs) that widely distributed in slopes is of significant concern for slope safety evaluation and disaster prevention. The failure behavior of SRM slopes under surface loading conditions was investigated through a series of centrifuge model tests considering various volumetric gravel contents. The displacement field of the slope was determined with image-based displacement system to observe the deformation of the soil and the movement of the block during loading in the tests. The test results showed that the ultimate bearing capacity and the stiffness of SRM slopes increased evidently when the volumetric block content exceeded a threshold value. Moreover, there were more evident slips around the blocks in the SRM slope. The microscopic analysis of the block motion showed that the rotation of the blocks could aggravate the deformation localization to facilitate the development of the slip surface. The high correlation between the rotation of the key blocks and the slope failure indicated that the blocks became the dominant load-bearing medium that influenced the slope failure. The blocks in the sliding body formed a chain to bear the load and change the displacement distribution of the adjacent matrix sand through the block rotation. 展开更多

Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical (THM) coupling pro- cesses in unsaturated soils are very important in both theoretical researches and engineering applications. A coupled formulation based on hybrid mixture theory is derived to model the THM coupling behavior of unsaturated soils. The free-energy and dissipative functions for different phases are derived from Taylor's series expansions. Constitutive relations for THM coupled behaviors of unsaturated soils, which include deformation, entropy change, fluid flow, heat conduction, and dynamic compatibility conditions on the interfaces, are then established. The number of field equations is shown to be equal to the number of unknown variables; thus, a closure of this coupling problem is established. In addition to modifications of the physical conservation equations with coupling effect terms, the constitutive equations, which consider the coupling between elastoplastic deformation of the soil skeleton, fluid flow, and heat transfer, are also derived. 展开更多

Soil-rock mixtures containing macropore(SRMCM)is a kind of geological material with special mechanical properties.Located in the project area of Lenggu hydropower station on the Yalong River,Sichuan Province,China, there is an extremely unstable Mahe talus slide with a total volume of nearly160 million cubic meters, which is mainly composed of SRMCM.The study on the mechanical properties of SRMCM is of great significance for the engineering construction and safe operation. In this paper, laboratory tests and discrete element numerical tests based on three-dimensional scanning technology were conducted to study the influence of stone content, stone size, and the angle of the macropore structure on shear characteristics of SRMCM.The failure mechanism of SRMCM was discussed from a microscopic perspective. This work explains the internal mechanism of the influence of stone content, stone size, and the angle of the macropore structure on the strength of SRMCM through the microscopic level of stone rotation, force chain distribution, and crack propagation. As the macropore structure that intersects with the preset shear plane at a large angle could act as a skeleton-like support to resist the shear force, the fracture of the weak cemented surface of soil and stone in the macropore structure is an important cause of SRMCM destruction. 展开更多

This paper analyzes a coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of unsaturated soils based on the theory of mixtures. Unsaturated soil is considered as a mixture composed of soil skeleton, liquid water, vapor, dry air, and dissolved air. In addition to the mass and momentum conservation equations of each component and the energy conservation equation of the mixture, the system is closed using other 37 constitutive (or restriction) equations. As the change in water chemical potential is identical to the change in vapor chemical potential, a thermodynamic restriction relationship for the phase transition between pore water and pore vapor is formulated, in which the impact of the change in gas pressure on the phase transition is taken into account. Six final govern- ing equations are given in incremental form in terms of six primary variables, i.e., three displacement components of soil skeleton, water pressure, gas pressure, and temperature. The processes involved in the coupled model include thermal expansions of soil skeleton and soil particle, Soret effect, phase transition between water and vapor, air dissolution in pore water, and deformation of soil skeleton. 展开更多

Unsaturated soil is a three-phase media and is composed of soil grain, water and gas.In this paper, the consolidation problem of unsaturated soil is investigated based on the theory of mixture.A theoretical formula of effective stress on anisotropic porous media and unsaturated soil is derived. The principle of effective stress and the principle of Curie symmetry are taken as two fundamental constitutive principles of unsaturated soil.A mathematical model of consolidation of unsaturated soil is proposed, which consists of 25 partial differenfial equations with 25 unknowns. With the help of increament linearizing method, the model is reduced to 5 governing equations with 5 unknowns,i.e.,the three displacement components of solid phase, the pore water pressure and the pore gas pressure.7 material parameters are involved in the model and all of them can he measured using soil tests. It is convenient to use the model to engineering practice. The well known Biot's theory is a special case of the model. 展开更多

Due to the loose structure, high porosity and high permeability of soil-rock mixture slope, the slope is unstable and may cause huge economic losses and casualties. The h-type anti-slide pile is regarded as an effective means to prevent the instability of soilrock mixture slope. In this paper,a centrifuge model test was conducted to investigate the stress distribution of the h-type anti-slide pile and the evolution process of soil arching during the loading.A numerical simulation model was built based on the similar relationship between the centrifuge model and the prototype to investigate the influence factors of the pile spacing, anchored depth, and crossbeam stiffness, and some recommendations were proposed for its application. The results show that the bending moment distribution of the rear pile exhibits Wshaped, while for the front pile, its distribution resembles V-shaped.The soil arching evolution process during loading is gradually dissipated from bottom to top and from far to near.During the loading, the change of bending moment can be divided into three stages, namely, the stabilization stage, the slow growth stage, and the rapid growth stage. In engineering projects, the recommended values of the pile spacing, anchored depth, and crossbeam stiffness are 4.0d,2.0d,and 2.0EI,where d and EI are the diameter and bending stiffness of the h-type anti-slide pile respectively. 展开更多

The soils were treated as the mixture composed of three constituents. First, from the researches of soil mechanics, some basic assumptions about the unsaturated soil mixture were made, and the entropy inequality of unsaturated soil mixture was derived. Then, with the common method usually used to deal with the constitutive problems in mixture theory, the nonlinear constitutive equations were obtained. Finally, putting the constitutive equations of constituents into the balance equations of momentum, the nonlinear field equations of constituents were set up. The balance equation of energy of unsaturated soil was also given, and thus the complete equations for solving the thermodynamic process of unsaturated soil was formed. 展开更多

The linear constitutive equations and field equations of unsaturated soils were obtained through linearizing the nonlinear equations given in the first part of this work. The linear equations were expressed in the forms similar to Biot's equations for saturated porous media. The Darcy's laws of unsaturated soil were proved. It is shown that Biot's equations of saturated porous media are the simplification of the theory. All these illustrate that constructing constitutive relation of unsaturated soil on the base of mixture theory is rational. 展开更多

In a surfactant assisted biodegradation process, the choice of surfactant(s) is of crucial importance. The question is: does the type of surfactant(i.e. chemical family) affect the biodegradation process at fixed hidrophillic-lypofillic balance(HLB) values? Microcosm assessments were developed using contaminated soil, with around of 5000 mg/kg of hydrocarbons as TPH-diesel. Mixtures of three nonionic surfactants were employed to get a wide range of specific HLB values. Tween20 and Span20 were mixed in the appropriate proportions to get HLB values between 8.6 and 16.7. Tween/Span60 mixtures reached HLB values between 4.7 and 14.9. Finally, Tween/Span80 combinations yielded HLB values between 4.3 and 15. TPH-diesel biodegradation was measured at the beginning, and after 8 weeks, as well as the FCU/gr soil, as a measure of microorganisms′ development during the biodegradation period. A second aim of this work was to assess the use of guar gum as a biodegradation enhancer instead of synthetic products. The conclusions of this work are that surfactant chemical family, and not only the HLB value clearly affects the assisted biodegradation rate. Surfactant's synergism was clearly observed. Regarding the use of guar gum, no biodegradation enhancement was observed for the three assessed concentrations, i.e., 2, 20, and 200 mg/kg, respectively. On the contrary, TPH-diesel removal was lower as the gum concentration increased. It is quite possible that guar gum was used as a microbial substrate. 展开更多

A number of parameters,e.g.cement content, cement type, relative density, and grain size distribution, can influence the mechanical behaviors of cemented soils. In the present study,a series of conventional triaxial compression tests were conducted on a cemented poorly graded sandegravel mixture containing 30% gravel and 70% sand in both consolidated drained and undrained conditions.Portland cement used as the cementing agent was added to the soil at 0%,1%,2%,and 3%(dry weight) of sandegravel mixture.Samples were prepared at 70% relative density and tested at confining pressures of 50 kPa,100 kPa,and150 kPa.Comparison of the results with other studies on well graded gravely sands indicated more dilation or negative pore pressure in poorly graded samples.Undrained failure envelopes determined using zero Skempton’s pore pressure coefficient (= 0) criterion were consistent with the drained ones.Energy absorption potential was higher in drained condition than undrained condition, suggesting that more energy was required to induce deformation in cemented soil under drained state.Energy absorption increased with increase in cement content under both drained and undrained conditions. 展开更多

To measure the soil-water retention curve (SWRC) of the mixture over a large range of suction, a pressure plate apparatus and filter papers were used. The obtained SWRC shows that the measurements via the two methods consistently agree with each other. By using a suction-controlled oedometer for unsaturated soils, a series of one-dimensional compression tests were performed on the unsaturated compacted sand-bentonite mixture at different constant suctions. The testing results indicate that the yield stress increases and compression index decreases with the increase of imposed suction. The results also demonstrate that the mixture wetted to saturation and subsequently dried to a certain suction level has a lower yield stress than that wetted directly to the same suction. 展开更多

Modeling soil salinity in an arid salt-affected ecosystem is a difficult task when using remote sensing data because of the complicated soil context (vegetation cover, moisture, surface roughness, and organic matter) and the weak spectral features of salinized soil. Therefore, an index such as the salinity index (SI) that only uses soil spectra may not detect soil salinity effectively and quantitatively. The use of vegetation reflectance as an indirect indicator can avoid limitations associated with the direct use of soil reflectance. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), as the most common vegetation index, was found to be responsive to salinity but may not be available for retrieving sparse vegetation due to its sensitivity to background soil in arid areas. Therefore, the arid fraction integrated index (AFⅡ) was created as supported by the spectral mixture analysis (SMA), which is more appropriate for analyzing variations in vegetation cover (particularly halophytes) than NDVI in the study area. Using soil and vegetation separately for detecting salinity perhaps is not feasible. Then, we developed a new and operational model, the soil salinity detecting model (SDM) that combines AFⅡ and SI to quantitatively estimate the salt content in the surface soil. SDMs, including SDM1 and SDM2, were constructed through analyzing the spatial characteristics of soils with different salinization degree by integrating AFⅡ and SI using a scatterplot. The SDMs were then compared to the combined spectral response index (COSRI) from field measurements with respect to the soil salt content. The results indicate that the SDM values are highly correlated with soil salinity, in contrast to the performance of COSRI. Strong exponential relationships were observed between soil salinity and SDMs (R2〉0.86, RMSE〈6.86) compared to COSRI (R2=0.71, RMSE=16.21). These results suggest that the feature space related to biophysical properties combined with AFII and SI can effectively provide information on soil salinity. 展开更多

The soil of the Guabirotuba geological formation(Paraná Basin, Brazil) has physico-mechanical properties which are not suitable for its utilization in pavement construction, in protection of hillsides and slopes, or as shallow foundation support. Treatment of this soil by lime addition would improve its usability. The present context intends to determine the ratio between the splitting tensile strength(q;)and the unconfined compressive strength(q;) of clayey soil in the metropolitan region of Curitiba City, which has been treated with different lime contents and curing times. The control parameters evaluated include lime content(L), curing time(t), moisture content(w), and ratio of porosity to volumetric lime content(η/L;). It was observed that the q;/q;ratio is between 0.17 and 0.2 in relation to the curing time, and an exponential relation exists between them. Meanwhile, the unconfined compressive strength of lime-treated soil was found to be approximately four times the initial value. 展开更多

In this paper,a novel compound was developed by mixing H_(3)PO_(4)-modified cauliflower leaves hydrochar(CLH)and coal gangue-based Na-X zeolite(ZL).An alkaline soil contaminated with cadmium(Cd)and lead(Pb)was amended through the individual and synergistic application of CLH and ZL(1%CLH,2%CLH,1%ZL,2%ZL and 1%CLH+1%ZL),and Chinese cabbage was grown on it.Individual application of CLH was superior to ZL on decreasing the pH of alkaline soil and increasing soil available phosphorus(Olsen-P)and soil organic matter(SOM).In contrast, their combined application significantly improved the soil cation exchange capacity(CEC).Besides, the 1%CLH+1%ZL was the most efficient treatment in decreasing diethylenetriamine pentaacetate(DTPA)-extractable Cd/Pb and concentrations of these two metals in cabbage root and shoot.Their synergistic application could better increase Cd and Pb immobilization and cabbage yield than their alone application.Furthermore, the immobilization of Pb for all treatments was higher than that of Cd.The synergistic immobilization mechanism of CLH and ZL reflected that the CLH precipitated and complexed with these two metals, which may block the pores of hydrochar or wrap on the surface of hydrochar. So the continuous adsorption and complexation were prevented.Nevertheless,ZL could probably alleviate this obstacle. This finding provides helpful information about using CLH combined with ZL as a soil stabilizer to immobilize heavy metals in contaminated alkaline soil. 展开更多

This paper presents an experimental and analytical investigation of the influence of variables related to soil weathering on the geomechanical performance of sand-silt mixtures containing lateritic soils,i.e.intensely weathered tropical soils with the influence of interparticle bonding. The sand-silt mixtures containing different relative proportions between uniform sand and lateritic soil were produced, and geomechanical soil characterization tests were performed.Based on the results,a transition from a primarily coarse-to a fine-grained prevailing soil structure was found to cause considerable impact on the geomechanical performance of these soils,as evidenced by design variables related to soil mineralogy and size distribution characteristics.Specifically, fines contents of both individual soil particles and soil aggregations were found to correlate with experimental results, while the relative proportion between sesquioxides(aluminum, and iron oxides),and silica,i.e.sesquioxide-silica ratios(SSR^(-1)),facilitated estimates concerning changes in geomechanical performance. Finally, the application of the sandsilt mixtures containing lateritic soil on soil walls reinforced with polymeric strips was also evaluated, further emphasizing the potential advantages of adopting variables related to soil weathering on design guidelines concerning tropical soils. 展开更多

We examined how afforestation patterns impact carbon(C),nitrogen(N),and phosphorus(P)stoichiometry in the plant-litter-soil system.Plant leaf, branch, stem, and root, litter, and soil samples were collected from mixedspecies plantations of Robinia pseudoacacia with Amygdalus davidiana(RPAD),R.pseudoacacia with Armeniaca sibirica(RPAS),and monocultures of R.pseudoacacia(RP),A.davidiana(AD),and A.sibirica(AS)in the Loess Hilly Region. The results showed that in mixed-species plantations,R.pseudoacacia had lower leaf N and P concentrations than in monocultures, while both A.davidiana and A.sibirica had higher leaf N and P concentrations.Soil P limited tree growth in both afforestation models.Mixing R.pseudoacacia with A.davidiana or A.sibirica reduced N-limitation during litter decomposition.Average soil total N and P concentrations were higher in RPAS than in RPAD,and both were higher than the corresponding monocultures. The average soil C:N ratio was the smallest in RPAS,while the average soil C:P ratio was larger in RPAS than in RP.A positive correlation between N and P concentrations, and between C:N and C:P ratios, was found in litter and all plant organs of mono-and mixedstands.Alternatively, for N concentration and C:N ratio, the correlations between plant(i.e.,leaf,branch,root)and litter and between plant and soil were inverse between plantation types.RPAD has an increased litter decomposition rate to release N and P,while RPAS has a faster rate of soil N mineralization.RPAD was the best plantation(mixed)to improve biogeochemical cycling,as soil nutrient restrictions, particularly for P-limitation,on trees growth were alleviated. This study thus provides insights into suitable tree selection and management by revealing C:N:P stoichiometry in the plant-litter-soil system under different afforestation patterns. 展开更多

Discharge of metals and their mineral flotation collectors into the soil environment causes severe ecological and health impacts, which is still not fully understood. This is of great concern, particularly with regards to their effect on the soil microorganisms whose functions determine not only the soil quality and function but also influence the air and water quality. This study aimed to analyze and compare, microcalorimetrically, the single chemical toxic effect with the combined effect of copper (Cu) and two of its main flotation collectors, potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and sodium isoamyl xanthate (SIAX), on soil microbial community. All chemicals, individually and as a binary mixture of copper and each of its flotation collectors, exhibited a significant dose-effect relationship, and the highest and lowest microbial activity inhibition being associated with SIAX and Cu, respectively (e.g. IC 50 of 447.5, 158.3 and 83.9 μg·g?1 soil for copper, PAX and SIAX, respectively). For all cases, the microbial activity was more affected by the mixture than by the individual mixture components. Increasing the xanthates dose (from 25 to 100 μg·g?1 soil) in the mixture with a copper dose of 200 μg·g?1 soil led to the increase of the microbial activity inhibition rate, from 23.08 % to 53.85% in case of PAX and from 26.92% to 57.69% in case of SIAX). Similarly, the toxicity level of the mixture of equitoxic components doses increased with the increased mixture doses. Since the observed activity level can be attributed to the surviving microbes, capable of adapting to both chemical and their mixture, a genetically based analysis should be conducted to allow identifying and characterizing the potentially resistant strains that can be useful for the remediation of the pollution by copper and xanthates and for the sustainability of copper mining and flotation, and for all soil, water, and air quality and function interest. 展开更多
