With the change of seasons, the shear strength of saline soil subgrade filler will change with the change of external temperature, which will aggravate the adverse effects of seismic on the subgrade. To explore the influence of seismic action on the stability of saline soil subgrade under the influence of temperature on the strength of saline soil subgrade filler, this paper first carried out saline soil shear tests at different temperatures to obtain the influence of temperature on the shear strength of saline soil. Then, the temperature field of the saline soil subgrade was simulated, and then based on the subgrade isothermal stratification model and FLAC3D, the displacement and acceleration amplification effects of seismic action on the shady slope, sunny slope and subgrade of saline soil subgrade in different months were analyzed. The following conclusions were finally drawn: under the action of seismic, In the process of the change of subgrade temperature of Qarhan-Golmud Expressway between 7.7°C and 27°C, the change of saline soil cohesion is the main factor affecting the stability of subgrade slope, and the maximum and minimum values of subgrade surface settlement appear in September and June of each year, respectively. In August, the differences of settlement between the shady slope and the sunny slope shoulder of the subgrade were the largest, and the acceleration of the shady slope and the sunny slope and the inside of the subgrade changed most significantly in the vertical direction. Special attention should be paid to the seismic early warning in the above key months; In the range from both sides of the shoulder to the centerline of the roadbed, the acceleration amplification effect starts to increase significantly from about 3m from the centerline of the roadbed to the centerline, so it is necessary to pay attention to the seismic design of this range. 展开更多

In cold regions, understanding the freezing strength of the interface between soil and structure is crucial for designing frost-resistant foundations. To investigate how the content of cement powder in aeolian sand affects this strength,we conducted direct shear tests under various conditions such as different fine-grained soil content, normal stress, and initial moisture content of the soil.By analyzing parameters like soil properties, and volume of ice content, and using the Mohr-Coulomb strength theory to define interface strength,we aimed to indirectly measure the cementation strength of the interface. Our findings revealed that as the particle content increased, the interface stress-strain curves became noticeably stiffer. We also observed a positive linear relationship between freezing strength and silt content, while the initial moisture content of the soil did not significantly impact the strengthening effect of fine-grained soil on freezing strength. Moreover,we discovered that as the powder content increased, the force binding the ice to the interface decreased, while the friction angle at the interface increased. However, the cohesion force at the interface remained relatively unchanged.Overall, our analysis suggests that the increase in freezing strength due to fine-grained soil content is primarily due to the heightened friction between aeolian sand and the interface. 展开更多

The subgrade soil is generally in saturated or unsaturated condition. To analyze complex thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) behaviors of subgrade, it is essential to determine the soil–water characteristic curve (SWCC) that represents the relationship between matric suction and moisture content. In this study, a full-automatic rapid stress-dependent SWCC pressure-plate extractor was developed. Then, the influences of overburden stress and degree of compaction on the SWCC of subgrade soil such as high liquid limit silt (MH) and low liquid limit clay (CL) were analyzed. Accordingly, a new model taking into account the influences of overburden stress and degree of compaction based on the well-known Van Genuchten (VG) SWCC fitting model was presented and validated. The results show that with the increase of the degree of compaction and overburden stress, the saturated moisture content of subgrade soil decreases, while the air-entry value increases and the transition section curve becomes flat. The influences of the degree of compaction and overburden stress on the SWCC of MH is greater than that of CL. Meanwhile, there was a satisfactory agreement between the prediction and measurement, indicating a good performance of the new model for predicting the SWCC. 展开更多

A comparison between deep learning and standalone models in predicting the compaction parameters of soil is presented in this research. One hundred and ninety and fifty-three soil samples were randomly picked up from two hundred and forty-three soil samples to create training and validation datasets, respectively. The performance and accuracy of the models were measured by root mean square error(RMSE),coefficient of determination(R2),Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient(r),mean absolute error(MAE),variance accounted for(VAF),mean absolute percentage error(MAPE),weighted mean absolute percentage error(WMAPE),a20-index,index of scatter(IOS),and index of agreement(IOA).Comparisons between standalone models demonstrate that the model MD 29 in Gaussian process regression(GPR)and model MD 101 in support vector machine(SVM)can achieve over 96%of accuracy in predicting the optimum moisture content(OMC)and maximum dry density(MDD)of soil, and outperformed other standalone models. The comparison between deep learning models shows that the models MD 46 and MD 146 in long short-term memory(LSTM)predict OMC and MDD with higher accuracy than ANN models. However, the LSTM models outperformed the GPR models in predicting the compaction parameters. The sensitivity analysis illustrates that fine content(FC),specific gravity(SG),and liquid limit(LL)highly influence the prediction of compaction parameters. 展开更多

In permafrost regions with warm frozen soil, subgrade thaw-collapse phenomenon commonly occurs, facing thaw collapse problems of the existed frozen soil subgrade, thus it is difficult to use traditional methods such as active cooling and passive protection technology to stabilize the existed warm frozen soil subgrade. This study derives a novel stabilizer method,a long-short(L-S)cement-mixed batter pile composite foundation to stabilize the existed warm frozen soil subgrade. To solve the thawcollapse problems in warm frozen soil subgrade, high water content and large compressibility characteristics were compared between soft soil and warm frozen soils.Theoretical analysis of heat conduction and numerical simulation of finite element model were used to study the freeze–thaw process and evaluate the stabilized effects of the L-S cement-mixed batter piles on the warm frozen soil foundation of the Qinghai-Tibet Highway.Furthermore, the thaw process and mechanical properties of foundation and piles were analyzed by introducing the hydration heat factor in the thermodynamic control equation. The results indicate that the thawing displacement of the existed warm frozen soil subgrade was reduced owing to the“support”and“grasp”effects of the L-S cement-mixed batter piles on the surrounding soil. The composite ground formed by strengthening the warm frozen ground with batter piles could considerably improve the bearing capacity of the existed warm frozen ground, effectively restrain the deformation of the upper embankment, and improve the strength of the ground. The analysis can provide method for the construction design of cement mixing batter pile foundation in cold regions. 展开更多

Expansive soil is sensitive to dry and wet environment change. And the volume deformation and inflation pressure of expansive soil may induce to cause the deformation failure of roadbed or many other adverse effects. Aimed at a high-speed railway engineering practice in the newly built Yun-Gui high-speed railway expansive soil section in China, indoor vibration test on a full-scaled new cutting subgrade model is carried out. Based on the established track-subgrade-foundation of expansive soil system dynamic model test platform, dynamic behavior of new cutting subgrade structure under train loads coupling with extreme service environment(dry, raining, and groundwater level rising) is analyzed comparatively. The results show that the subgrade dynamic response is significantly influenced by service conditions and the dynamic response of subgrade gradually becomes stable with the increasing vibration times under various service environment conditions. The vertical dynamic soil stress is related with the depth in an approximate exponential function, and the curves of vertical dynamic soil stress present a "Z" shape distribution along transverse distance. The peak value of dynamic soil stress appears below the rail, and it increases more obviously near the roadbed surface. However, the peak value of dynamic soil stress is little affected outside 5.0 m of center line. The vibration velocity and acceleration are in a quadratic curve with an increase in depth, and the raining and groundwater level rising increase both the vibration velocity and the acceleration. The vertical deformations at different depths are differently affected by service environment in roadbed. The deformation of roadbed increases sharply when the water gets in the foundation of expansive soil, and more than 60% of the total deformation of roadbed occurs in expansive soil foundation. The laid waterproofing and drainage structure layer, which weakens the dynamic stress and improves the track regularity, presents a positive effect on the control deformation of roadbed surface. An improved empirical formula is then proposed to predict the dynamic stress of ballasted tracks subgrade of expansive soil. 展开更多

Although high-speed railways are characterized by being fast, comfortable and safe, higher standards for defor- mation of the railways' frozen subgrade are required. Meanwhile, changes in subgrade soil temperatures are the main factors affecting the deformation of frozen subgrade. Therefore, this paper selected typical test subgrade sections of the Harbin-Qiqihar Line, a special line for passenger transport built in the deep seasonal frozen soil regions of China, to monitor field temperatures. The resilient modulus(MR)of subgrade soils is usually used to characterize the stiffness of subgrade and is a crucial parameter in pavement design. In order to determine the resilient modulus of compacted subgrade soils quickly and accurately,an optimized artificial neural network(ANN)approach based on the multi-population genetic algorithm(MPGA)was proposed in this study. The MPGA overcomes the problems of the traditional ANN such as low efficiency, local optimum and over-fitting.The developed optimized ANN method consists of ten input variables,twenty-one hidden neurons, and one output variable. The physical properties(liquid limit, plastic limit, plasticity index,0.075 mm passing percentage, maximum dry density, optimum moisture content),state variables(degree of compaction, moisture content)and stress variables(confining pressure, deviatoric stress)of subgrade soils were selected as input variables. The MR was directly used as the output variable. Then, adopting a large amount of experimental data from existing literature, the developed optimized ANN method was compared with the existing representative estimation methods. The results show that the developed optimized ANN method has the advantages of fast speed, strong generalization ability and good accuracy in MR estimation. 展开更多

Pile-slab structure roadbed is a new form of ballastless track for high speed railway. Due to lack of corresponding design code, based on the analysis of its structure characteristics and application requirements, it is proposed to carry out load effect combination according to ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state, and the most unfavorable combination of each state is chosen to carry through design calculation for pile-slab structure. Space model of pile-slab structure can be simplified as a plane flame model, by using the orthogonal test method, and the design parameter of pile-slab structure is optimized. Moreover, based on the engineering background of Suining-Chongqing high-speed railway, the dynamic deformation characteristics of pile-slab structure roadbed are further researched by carrying on the indoor dynamic model test. The test results show that the settlement after construction of subgrade satisfies the requirement of settlement control to build ballastless track on soil subgrade for high-speed railway. Slab structure plays the role of arch shell as load is transmitted from slab to pile, and the vertical dynamic stress of subgrade soil is approximately of "K" form distribution with the depth. The distribution of pile stress is closely related to soil characteristics, which has an upset triangle shape where the large dynamic stress is at the top. Pile compared with soil shares most dynamic stress. Pile structure expands the depth of the dynamic response of subgrade has limited effect on dynamic response. These results can provide subgrade. and improves the stress of subgrade soil, and the speed of train scientific basis for pile-slab structure roadbed used on soil 展开更多

This study explores the coupling effect of pond ash(PA)and polypropylene(PP)fiber to control the strength and durability of expansive soil. The PA is used to chemically treat the expansive soil and PP fiber is adopted as reinforcement against tensile cracking. The sustainable use of PA and PP fiber are demonstrated by performing mechanical(i.e.unconfined compressive strength, split tensile strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity),chemical(pH value, electrical conductivity and calcite content),and microstructural analyses before and after 2nd,4th,6th,8th and 10th freezing-thawing(F-T)cycles.Three curing methods with 7 d,14 d and 28 d curing periods are considered to reinforce the 5%,10%,15%and 20%PA-stabilized expansive soil with 0.25%,0.5%and 1%PP fiber. In order to develop predictive models for mechanical and durability parameters, the experimental data are processed utilizing artificial neural network(ANN),in association with the leave-one-out cross-validation(LOOCV)as a resampling method and three different activation functions. The mechanical and durability properties of the PA-stabilized expansive soil subgrades are increased with PP fiber reinforcement. The results of ANN modeling predict the mechanical properties perfectly, and the correlation coefficient(R)approaches up to 0.96. 展开更多

Due to the influence of the groundwater level, the internal humidity of the subgrade changes and the stability of the subgrade is affected. The main purpose of this paper is to obtain a reliable model of subgrade soil water content variation under the action of dry-wet cycle through sensor readings. Thus,an indoor soil column model test system is designed, and the readings of the sensors are used to determine the changing law of moisture field in the subgrade soil. The sensor readings indicate that the water content gradually decreases along the height of the soil column, and the water in the upper part of the soil column continuously loses, while the water in the lower part migrates upward to supplement. With the increase of dry-wet cycle index, the water holding capacity of soil decreases, and the soil surface gradually cracks and tends to rupture. 展开更多

Diatomaceous soils, composed of diatom microfossils with biological origins, have geotechnical properties that are fundamentally different from those of conventional non-diatomaceous fine-grained soils.Despite their high fines content, diatomaceous soils typically exhibit remarkably high shear resistance, approaching that of sandy soils. However, the exact role that diatoms play in controlling the mechanical properties of fine-grained soils and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In light of this, the shear strength response of diatomaceous soils was systematically investigated using consolidated undrained triaxial compression tests on diatomekaolin mixtures(DKMs)with various diatom contents and overconsolidation ratios. The micro-and nano-scale structures of the soil samples were characterized in detail using scanning electron microscope(SEM)and atomic force microscope(AFM)to interpret the abnormal shear strength parameters of diatomaceous soils. The results indicated that the presence of diatoms could contribute to significantly higher strength,e.g.the friction angle of DKMs was improved by 72.7%to 37and the value of undrained shear strength tripled with diatom content increasing from 20%to 100%.Such significant improvement in soil strength with diatom inclusion could be attribute to the hard siliceous skeleton of diatoms and the interlocking between particles with rough surfaces, which were quantitatively analyzed by the surface roughness parameters with AFM.Furthermore,a conceptual model established based on the macro-mechanical tests and microscopic observations portrays a microstructural evolution of soils with increasing diatoms. The microstructure of soils was gradually transformed from the matrix-type to the skeletal one, resulting in a continual augmentation in shear strength through mutual interactions between diatom microfossils. This paper provides new insights into the multi-scale structural properties of diatoms and significantly advances our understanding of the mechanical behavior of diatomaceous soils. 展开更多

Fine grains migration is a primary cause of landslides and debris flows. This study investigates the effect of fine-grain migration on slope failure through flume experiments, focusing on the spatiotemporal characteristics and mechanisms of slope stability.A series of artificial rainfall flume experiments with varying rainfall intensities and slopes were conducted using soil samples collected from Wei Jia Gully. The experiments monitored pore-water pressure, grain migration, and failure sequences.Grain-size distribution parameters(μand Dc)were analyzed to understand the migration path and accumulation of fine grains. The experiments reveal that fine-grain migration significantly alters soil structure, leading to random blockage and interconnection of internal pore channels. These changes result in fluctuating pore-water pressure distributions and uneven fine-grain accumulation, critical factors in slope stability.Slope failures occur randomly and intermittently, influenced by fine-grain content in runoff and resulting pore-water pressure variations. This study highlights that fine-grain migration plays a vital role in slope stability, with significant implications for predicting and mitigating slope failures. The stochastic nature of fine-grain migration and its impact on soil properties should be incorporated into predictive models to enhance their accuracy and reliability. 展开更多

This article explains the results of a study conducted on the characterizations of subgrade soils in the region of Thies. The road platforms are mainly composed of a background soil, which is generally overlapped by a surface layer that plays two roles. Firstly, it protects the soil structure, ensures the leveling, and facilitates the movement of vehicles. Secondly, it brings harmony in the mechanistic characteristics of the materials that compose the soil while improving the long-term life force. The methodology consisted in taking samples of subgrade soil along the roads all over the region of Thies in a 5 km diameter span. The identification tests allowed the Thies-Tivaoune, Thies-Khombole and Thies-Noto axes are characterized by tight sands, poorly graded size. While Thies Pout-axis is characteristic of severe solid particle size and spread well graded and serious to spread and well graded particle size. Finally the Thies-Montrolland axis is characterized by severe to very tight particle size and graduated to spread and serious and well graded particle size. The specific gravity values found Proctor test shows the presence of sand, sandy laterite and laterite. In the target area, polished soils of the A-3 type according to the AASHTO classification system are the most represented with 60%, followed by the A-2-6 type 25%, and the A-2-4 type with 9%, which are typical of gravel, clay, and silty sands. Soils of the A-1-b type (2%) typical of roc fragments, sands and clay are also represented. Polished sands of the A-3 type have a better efficiency on road infrastructures than other types of soil listed above. Finally, we’ve also noted the presence of soils of the A-2-7 and A-4 types with the low percentage of 2%. Subgrade soils of class S4 are the most represented with 58%, followed by those of class S5 with 42%. Samples of the Thies-Montrolland road have a claylike plasticity (CL or CH group), while those of the Thies-Pout road belong to the ML or OL and CL or OL groups with a tendency mostly directed to the CL or OL group. All these results confirm the very nature of soils on the two roads and put the light on the presence of lateritic materials with certain plasticity. 展开更多

Based on the theory of elastic wave propagation in saturated soil subgrade established by the author of this paper, the axisymmetric vertical vibration of a rigid circular foundation resting on partially saturated soil subgrade which is composed of a dry elastic layer and it saturated substratum is studied. The analysis relied on the use of integral transform techniques and a pair of dual integral equations governing the vertical vibration of the rigid foundation is listed under the consideration of mixed boundary-value condition. The results tire reduced to the case for saturated half-space. The set of dual integral equations are reduced to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind and solved by numerical procedures, Numerical examples are given at the end of the paper and plots of the dynamic compliance coefficient C-b versus the dimensionless frequency a(0) are presented. 展开更多

It is important to study the subgrade characteristics of high-speed railways in consideration of the water–soil coupling dynamic problem, especially when high-speed trains operate in rainy regions. This study develops a nonlinear water–soil interaction dynamic model of slab track coupling with subgrade under high-speed train loading based on vehicle–track coupling dynamics.By using this model, the basic dynamic characteristics, including water–soil interaction and without water induced by the high-speed train loading, are studied. The main factors-the permeability coefficien and the porosity-influencin the subgrade deformation are investigated. The developed model can characterize the soil dynamic behaviour more realistically, especially when considering the influenc of water-rich soil. 展开更多
