A computational framework for parachute inflation is developed based on the immersed boundary/finite element approach within the open-source IBAMR library. The fluid motion is solved by Peskin's diffuse-interface immersed boundary(IB)method, which is attractive for simulating moving-boundary flows with large deformations. The adaptive mesh refinement technique is employed to reduce the computational cost while retain the desired resolution. The dynamic response of the parachute is solved with the finite element approach. The canopy and cables of the parachute system are modeled with the hyperelastic material.A tether force is introduced to impose rigidity constraints for the parachute system. The accuracy and reliability of the present framework is validated by simulating inflation of a constrained square plate.Application of the present framework on several canonical cases further demonstrates its versatility for simulation of parachute inflation. 展开更多

We present a high performance modularly-built open-source software-OpenIFEM.OpenIFEM is a C++implementation of the modified immersed finite element method(mIFEM)to solve fluid-structure interaction(FSI)problems. This software is modularly built to perform multiple tasks including fluid dynamics(incompressible and slightly compressible fluid models),linear and nonlinear solid mechanics, and fully coupled fluid-structure interactions. Most of open-source software packages are restricted to certain discretization methods;some are under-tested,under-documented,and lack modularity as well as extensibility.OpenIFEM is designed and built to include a set of generic classes for users to adapt so that any fluid and solid solvers can be coupled through the FSI algorithm. In addition, the package utilizes well-developed and tested libraries. It also comes with standard test cases that serve as software and algorithm validation. The software can be built on cross-platform,i.e.,Linux,Windows,and Mac OS,using CMake.Efficient parallelization is also implemented for high-performance computing for large-sized problems.OpenIFEM is documented using Doxygen and publicly available to download on GitHub.It is expected to benefit the future development of FSI algorithms and be applied to a variety of FSI applications. 展开更多

A computational procedure is developed to solve the problems of coupled motion of a structure and a viscous incompressible fluid. In order to incorporate the effect of the moving surface of the structure as well as the free surface motion, the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation is employed as the basis of the finite element spatial discretization. For numerical integration in time, the fraction, step method is used. This method is useful because one can use the same linear interpolation function for both velocity and pressure. The method is applied to the nonlinear interaction of a structure and a tuned liquid damper. All computations are performed with a personal computer. 展开更多

An integrated fluid-thermal-structural analysis approach is presented. In this approach, the heat conduction in a solid is coupled with the heat convection in the viscous flow of the fluid resulting in the thermal stress in the solid. The fractional four-step finite element method and the streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) method are used to analyze the viscous thermal flow in the fluid. Analyses of the heat transfer and the thermal stress in the solid axe performed by the Galerkin method. The second-order semi- implicit Crank-Nicolson scheme is used for the time integration. The resulting nonlinear equations are lineaxized to improve the computational efficiency. The integrated analysis method uses a three-node triangular element with equal-order interpolation functions for the fluid velocity components, the pressure, the temperature, and the solid displacements to simplify the overall finite element formulation. The main advantage of the present method is to consistently couple the heat transfer along the fluid-solid interface. Results of several tested problems show effectiveness of the present finite element method, which provides insight into the integrated fluid-thermal-structural interaction phenomena. 展开更多

We review recent advances in the finite element method (FEM) simulations of interactions between waves and structures. Our focus is on the potential theory with the fully nonlinear or second-order boundary condition. The present paper has six sections. A review of previous work on interactions between waves and ocean structures is presented in Section one. Section two gives the mathematical formulation. In Section three, the finite element discretization, mesh generation and the finite element linear system solution methods are described. Section four presents numerical methods including time marching schemes, computation of velocity, remeshing and smoothing techniques and numerical radiation conditions. The application of the FEM to the wave-structure interactions are presented in Section five followed by the concluding remarks in Section six. 展开更多

The nonlinear finite element(FE) analysis has been widely used in the design and analysis of structural or geotechnical systems. The response sensitivities(or gradients) to the model parameters are of significant importance in these realistic engineering problems. However the sensitivity calculation has lagged behind, leaving a gap between advanced FE response analysis and other research hotspots using the response gradient. The response sensitivity analysis is crucial for any gradient-based algorithms, such as reliability analysis, system identification and structural optimization.Among various sensitivity analysis methods, the direct differential method(DDM) has advantages of computing efficiency and accuracy, providing an ideal tool for the response gradient calculation. This paper extended the DDM framework to realistic complicated soil-foundation-structure interaction(SFSI) models by developing the response gradients for various constraints, element and materials involved. The enhanced framework is applied to three-dimensional SFSI system prototypes for a pilesupported bridge pier and a pile-supported reinforced concrete building frame structure, subjected to earthquake loading conditions. The DDM results are verified by forward finite difference method(FFD).The relative importance(RI) of the various material parameters on the responses of SFSI system are investigated based on the DDM response sensitivity results. The FFD converges asymptotically toward the DDM results, demonstrating the advantages of DDM(e.g.,accurate,efficient,insensitive to numerical noise).Furthermore, the RI and effects of the model parameters of structure, foundation and soil materials on the responses of SFSI systems are investigated by taking advantage of the sensitivity analysis results. The extension of DDM to SFSI systems greatly broaden the application areas of the d gradient-based algorithms,e.g.FE model updating and nonlinear system identification of complicated SFSI systems. 展开更多

The compaction and stress generation on terrain were always investigated based on empirical approaches or testing methods for tire/soil interaction. However, the analysis should be performed for various tires and at different soil strengths. With the increasing capacity of numerical computers and simulation software, finite element modeling of tire/terrain interaction seems a good approach for predicting the effect of change on the parameters. In this work,an elaborated 3D model fully complianning with the geometry of radial tire 115/60R13 was established, using commercial code Solidwork Simulation. The hyper-elastic and incompressible rubber as tire main material was analyzed by Moony-Rivlin model. The Drucker-Prager yield criterion was used to model the soil compaction. Results show that the model realistically predicts the laboratory tests outputs of the modeled tire on the soft soil. 展开更多

The dynamic equations of porous medium and finite element formulation are given. For structural analysis, the technique of multilevel substructure is used, and the saturated soil analysis is set in the highest level substructure model. Based on these theories a dynamic finite element analysis program DIASS for the analysis of interaction between two phase ocean soil foundation and platform structures has been developed. The consolidation analysis of interaction between structure and saturated soil foundation is discussed. With the use of substructure technique, the structure is condensed onto the interface of the soil, and then the consolidation governing equations to describe the interaction between soil and structure are derived, The solution with non-iterative algorithm is proposed in this paper. The pressure Master-Slave relation method is used to deal with the non-permeability conditions on soil boundaries. A numerical example is illustrated. Based on this paper, the interactive consolidation analysis between large structure and soil has been more practical. 展开更多

This paper is devoted to a new approach—the dynamic response of Soil-Structure System (SSS), the far field of which is discretized by decay or mapped elastodynamic infinite elements, based on scaling modified Bessel shape functions are to be calculated. These elements are appropriate for Soil-Structure Interaction problems, solved in time or frequency domain and can be treated as a new form of the recently proposed elastodynamic infinite elements with united shape functions (EIEUSF) infinite elements. Here the time domain form of the equations of motion is demonstrated and used in the numerical example. In the paper only the formulation of 2D horizontal type infinite elements (HIE) is used, but by similar techniques 2D vertical (VIE) and 2D corner (CIE) infinite elements can also be added. Continuity along the artificial boundary (the line between finite and infinite elements) is discussed as well and the application of the proposed elastodynamical infinite elements in the Finite element method is explained in brief. A numerical example shows the computational efficiency and accuracy of the proposed infinite elements, based on scaling Bessel shape functions. 展开更多

A dynamic analysis of both twisting and regular towers is carried out to determine the results of considering soil-structure interaction(SSI)on high-rise buildings. In addition, the difference between the seismic performance of using twisting towers over regular ones is investigated. The twisting tower is a simulation of the Evolution Tower(Moscow). The towers’skeletons consist of RC elements and rest on a reinforced concrete piled-raft foundation. The soil model is considered as multi-layered with the same soil properties as the zone chosen for the analysis(New Mansoura City,Egypt). The only difference between both towers is their shape in elevation. The whole system is modelled and analyzed in a single step as one full 3D model, which is known as the direct approach in SSI.All analyses are carried out using finite-element software(Midas GTS NX).Dynamic output responses due to three records of seismic loads are proposed and presented in some graphs.Based on the results,it is concluded that SSI has a considerable effect on the dynamic response of tall buildings mainly because of the foundation flexibility,as it leads to lengthening the vibration period, increasing the story drift and the base shear for both cases. 展开更多

Extended finite element method (XFEM) implementation of the interaction integral methodology for evaluating the stress intensity factors (SIF) of the mixed-mode crack problem is presented. A discontinuous function and the near-tip asymptotic function are added to the classic finite element approximation to model the crack behavior. Two-state integral by the superposition of actual and auxiliary fields is derived to calculate the SIFs. Applications of the proposed technique to the inclined centre crack plate with inclined angle from 0° to 90° and slant edge crack plate with slant angle 45°, 67.5° and 90° are presented, and comparisons are made with closed form solutions. The results show that the proposed method is convenient, accurate and computationallv efficient. 展开更多

A vein model was established to simulate the periodic characteristics of blood flow and valve deformation in blood-induced valve cycles.Using an immersed finite element method which was modified by a ghost fluid technique, the interaction between the vein and blood was simulated. With an independent solid solver, the contact force between vein tissues was calculated using an adhesive contact method.A benchmark simulation of the normal valve cycle validated the proposed model for a healthy vein. Both the opening orifice and blood flow rate agreed with those in the physiology.Low blood shear stress and maximum leaflet stress were also seen in the base region of the valve. On the basis of the healthy model,a diseased vein model was subsequently built to explore the sinus lesions, namely, fibrosis and atrophy which are assumed stiffening and softening of the sinus. Our results showed the opening orifice of the diseased vein was inversely proportional to the corresponding modulus of the sinus.A drop in the transvalvular pressure gradient resulted from the sinus lesion.Compared to the fibrosis, the atrophy of the sinus apparently improved the vein deformability but simultaneously accelerated the deterioration of venous disease and increased the risk of potential fracture. These results provide understandings of the normal/abnormal valve cycle in vein, and can be also helpful for the prosthesis design. 展开更多

The interaction between geogrid and soil is crucial for the stability of geogrid-reinforced earth structure. In finite element (FE) analysis, geogrids are usually assumed as beam or truss elements, and the interaction between geogrid and soil is considered as Coulomb friction resistance, which cannot reflect the true stress and displacement developed in the reinlbrcement. And the traditional Lagrangian elements used to simulate soil always become highly distorted and lose accuracy in high-stress blocks. An improved geogrid model that can produce shear resistance and passive resistance and a soil model using the Eulerian technique, in combination with the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) method, are used to analyze the interaction between geogrid and soil of reinforced foundation test in ABAQUS. The stress in the backfill, resistance of geogrid, and settlement of foundation were computed and the results of analysis agree well with the experimental results. This simulation method is of referential value for FE analysis of reinforced earth structure. 展开更多

Employing arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) finite element method, this poper studies the opening and closing process of a St. Jude medical valve through a two-dimensional model of the mechanical valve-blood interaction in which the valve is regarded as a rigid body rotating around a fixed point, and foe blood is simplified as viscous incompressible Newtonian fluid. The numerical analysis of the opening and closing behaviour of as St. Jude valve suggested that: 1. The whole opening and closing process of an artificial mechanical valve is consisted of four phases: (1) Opening phase; (2) Opening maintenance phase; (3) Closing phase; (4) Closing maintenance phase. 2. The St. Jude medical valve closes with prominent regurgitat which results in water-hammer effect. 3. During the opening and closing process of the St. Jude valve, high shear stresses occur in the middle region of the two leaflets and on the valve ring. The present model has made a breakthrough on the coupling computational analysis considering the interactive movement of the valve and blood. 展开更多

On the basis of the piezoelectric theory, Mindlin plate theory, viscoelastic theory and ideal fluid equation, the finite element modeling of a fluid-filled cylindrical shell with active constrained layer damping (ACLD) was discussed. Energy methods and Lagrange’s equation were used to obtain dynamic equations of the cylindrical shell with ACLD treatments, which was modeled as well with the finite element method. The GHM (Golla-Hughes-McTavish) method was applied to model the frequency dependent damping of viscoelastic material. Ideal and incompressible fluid was considered to establish the dynamic equations of the fluid-filled cylindrical shell with ACLD treatments, Numerical results obtained from the finite element analysis were compared with those from an experiment.
