In generator design field, waveform total harmonic distortion(THD)and telephone harmonic factor(THF)are parameters commonly used to measure the impact of generator no-load voltage harmonics on the power communication quality.Tubular hydrogenerators are considered the optimal generator for exploiting low-head,high-flow hydro resources, and they have seen increasingly widespread application in China's power systems recent years. However, owing to the compact and constrained internal space of such generators, their internal magnetic-field harmonics are pronounced. Therefore, accurate calculation of their THD and THF is crucial during the analysis and design stages to ensure the quality of power communication.Especially in the electromagnetic field finite element modeling analysis of such generators, the type and order of the finite element meshes may have a significant impact on the THD and THF calculation results, which warrants in-depth research. To address this, this study takes a real 34 MW large tubular hydrogenerator as an example, and establishes its electromagnetic field finite element model under no-load conditions. Two types of meshes, five mesh densities, and two mesh orders are analyzed to reveal the effect of electromagnetic field finite element mesh types and orders on the calculation results of THD and THF for such generators. 展开更多

Distribution of magnetic field and electromagnetic force in twin-roll casting of steels was studied by the method of numericalsimulation in this paper. Two-dimension finite element model, which includes the regions of melt, stainless collar, coil andmagnetic core, has been constructed. By solving magnetic vector potential formulations of quasi-static electromagnetic field, distribution of magnetic flux density and magnetic force at different molten height is determined. Calculated results showedthat intensity of the distribution of magnetic flux density increased linearly with the increased coil current; and the magneticforce in the melt increased as a quadratic cure with creased coil current. More attention was given to the distribution of eddycurrent and magnetic force in the melt, the confine effect at different molten height was also discussed. 展开更多

Two full 3D steady mathematical models are developed by finite element method (FEM) to calcalate coupled physics fields. the electro-magnetic model is built and solved first and so is the fluid motion model with the acquired electromagnetic force as source body forces in Navier-Stokes equations. Effects caused by the ferromagnetic shell, busbar system around, and open boundary problem as well as inside induced current were considered in terms of the magnetic field. Furthermore, a new modeling method is found to set up solid models and then mesh them entirely with so-called structuralized grids, namely hex-mesh. Examples of 75kA prebaked cell with two kinds of busbar arrangements are presented. Results agree with those disclosed in the literature and confirm that the coupled simulation is valid. It is also concluded that the usage of these models facilitates the consistent analysis of the electric field to magnetic field and then flow motion to the greater extent, local distributions of current density and magnetic flux density are very much dependent on the cell structure, the steel shell is a shield to reduce the magnetic field and flow pattern is two dimensional in the main body of the metal pad. 展开更多

Three-dimensional finite element model of electromagnetic stirrer was built to predict magnetic field in a bloom continuous casting mold for steel during operation. The effects of current intensity, current frequency, and mold copper plate thickness on the magnetic field distribution in the mold were investigated. The results show that the magnetic induction intensity increases linearly with the increase in current intensity and decreases with the increase in current frequency. Increasing current intensity and frequency is available in increasing the electromagnetic force. The Joule heat decreases gradually from surface to center of bloom, and a maximum Joule heat can be found on corner of bloom. The prediction of magnetic induction intensity is in good agreement with the measured values. 展开更多

The induced polarization (IP) in rocks and minerals is of significance to the marine controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) field. We propose an adaptive finite-element algorithm for the 2.5D frequency-domain forward modeling of marine CSEM that considers the induced polarization. The geoelectrical model is discretized using an unstructured triangular elemental grid that accommodates the complex topography and geoelectrical structures. We use the Cole-Cole model to describe the IP and develop a complex resistivity forward modeling algorithm. We compare the simulation results with published 1D model results and subsequently calculate the electromagnetic field for variable azimuth sources, IP parameters, and topography. Finally, we analyze the IP effect on the marine CSEM field and show that IP of oil reservoirs and topography affects the marine CSEM electromagnetic field. 展开更多

This paper presents an analytical method for electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) under voltage excitation and considers the non-uniform distribution of the biased magnetic field. A complete model of EMATs including the non-uniform biased magnetic field, a pulsed eddy current field and the acoustic field is built up. The pulsed voltage excitation is transformed to the frequency domain by fast Fourier transformation (FFT). In terms of the time harmonic field equations of the EMAT system, the impedances of the coils under different frequencies are calculated according to the circuit-field coupling method and Poynting's theorem. Then the currents under different frequencies are calculated according to Ohm's law and the pulsed current excitation is obtained by inverse fast Fourier transformation (IFFT). Lastly, the sequentially coupled finite element method (FEM) is used to calculate the Lorentz force in the EMATs under the current excitation. An actual EMAT with a two-layer two-bundle printed circuit board (PCB) coil, a rectangular permanent magnet and an aluminium specimen is analysed. The coil impedances and the pulsed current are calculated and compared with the experimental results. Their agreement verified the validity of the proposed method. Furthermore, the influences of lift-off distances and the non-uniform static magnetic field on the Lorentz force under pulsed voltage excitation are studied. 展开更多

Simulation of the temperature field of copier paper in copier fusing is very important for improving the fusing property of reprography. The temperature field of copier paper varies with a high gradient when the copier paper is moving through the fusing rollers. By means of conventional shaft elements, the high gradient temperature variety causes the oscillation of the numerical solution. Based on the Daubechies scaling functions, a kind of wavelet based element is constructed for the above problem. The temperature field of the copier paper moving through the fusing rollers is simulated using the two methods. Comparison of the results shows the advantages of the wavelet finite element method, which provides a new method for improving the copier properties. 展开更多

This paper briefly reviews the characteristics and major processes of the explicit finite element method in modeling the near-fault ground motion field. The emphasis is on the finite element-related problems in the finite fault source modeling. A modified kinematic source model is presented, in which vibration with some high frequency components is introduced into the traditional slip time function to ensure that the source and ground motion include sufficient high frequency components. The model presented is verified through a simple modeling example. It is shown that the predicted near-fault ground motion field exhibits similar characteristics to those observed in strong motion records, such as the hanging wall effect, vertical effect, fling step effect and velocity pulse effect, etc. 展开更多

Heat transfer and deformation of initial solidification shell in soft contact continuous casting mold under high frequency electromagnetic field were analyzed using numerical simulation method; the relative electromagnetic parameters were obtained from the previous studies. Owing to the induction heating of a high frequency electromagnetic field (20 kHz), the thickness of initial solidification shell decreases, and the temperature of strand surface and slit copper mold increases when compared with the case without the electromagnetic filed. The viscosity of flux de- creases because of the induction heating of the high frequency electromagnetic field, and the dimension of the flux channel increases with electromagnetic pressure; thus, the deformation behavior of initial solidification shell was different before and after the action of high frequency electromagnetic field. Furthermore, the abatement mechanism of oscillation marks under high frequency electromagnetic field was explained. 展开更多

The 3-dimension numerical simulation study on the electromagnetic dam used in the twin roll caster has been performed by using the edge element method. It was found that the materials and structures of the roll collars have great influence on the distribution of the magnetic flux density, eddy current density and the electromagnetic force in the molten pool. The conductive collars make the magnetic flux density decreased in the molten pool, but it also makes the magnetic force more uniformly, and the force in the low part of the molten pool where needs greater force have increased some what. The conductive collars make the EMD device more effective than the nonconductive collars. 展开更多

The features of an edge element method including the volume and surface edge element method are investigated in depth. Surface basis functions of edge elements to an arbitrary shape of target are derived according to the geometrical property of basis functions and applied to discretize the surface integral equation for 3-D general targets. The proposed model is presented to compute resonant frequencies and surface current of underground unexplored ordnance (UXO), and then the electromagnetic responses of single target with different frequencies and positions of sensor are simulated and results are validated by experiments. 展开更多

A long slope consisting of spatially random soils is a common geographical feature. This paper examined the necessity of three-dimensional(3 D) analysis when dealing with slope with full randomness in soil properties. Although 3 D random finite element analysis can well reflect the spatial variability of soil properties, it is often time-consuming for probabilistic stability analysis. For this reason, we also examined the least advantageous(or most pessimistic) cross-section of the studied slope. The concept of"most pessimistic" refers to the minimal cross-sectional average of undrained shear strength. The selection of the most pessimistic section is achievable by simulating the undrained shear strength as a 3 D random field. Random finite element analysis results suggest that two-dimensional(2 D) plane strain analysis based the most pessimistic cross-section generally provides a more conservative result than the corresponding full 3 D analysis. The level of conservativeness is around 15% on average. This result may have engineering implications for slope design where computationally tractable 2 D analyses based on the procedure proposed in this study could ensure conservative results. 展开更多

The paper describes an approach to teaching mutually-coupled circuits CAD techniques to undergraduate students pursuing a degree course in electrical engineering or physics, and explains how a series of simulated experiments may be incorporated into the existing subjects. The simulated experiments make use of a two-dimensional open-access software based on the finite-element method. At the laboratory meetings, the students learn how to set up field problems for solution, and how to examine the results. Simulation tasks based on three axisymmetric open-boundary problems are used to introduce different numeric techniques to compute inductance and magnetic forces. Objective: To investigate the electromagnetic field and specific absorptionrate (SAR) distribution of different structure applicators with different depths for treating bonetumors using microwave hyperthermia. Methods: The finite element method (FEM) was used to calculate, electromagnetic field and SAR distribution. Two different structure applicators were simulated. Theone is simple coaxial antenna, which has been successfully used in clinic treating bone tumors inTangdu hospital of the Forth Military Medical University several years. It was formed by a coaxialcable peeled off the out copper at end. The other applicator was coaxial- slot antenna, which waswidely used in microwave hyperthermia. The applicator inserted into the cylindrical bone withdifferent depths, and worked at the frequency of 2 450 MHz. Results: The electric field and SARgenerated by the simple coaxial applicator were mainly concentrated out the tissues, and were notuniform in the tissues, while the coaxial- slot applicator well transmits the electric field and SARinto the tissues, and can easily treat different position by adjusting the slat position. Conclusion: The results calculated by EFM, were well accordant with the experimental and clinicalresulls, and will be important for improving the clinical effects of microwave hyperthermia. 展开更多

A combined method for the fast 3-D finite element modeling of defect responses in nondestructive testing of electromagnetics is presented. The method consists of three numerical techniques: zoom-in technique, difference field technique and iterative solution technique. Utilizing the zoom-in technique, the computational zone focuses on a relatively small domain around the defect. Employing the difference field technique, the axisymmetrical field solution corresponding to the case with no defect can be used to simplify the mesh generation and obtain the modeling results quickly. Using the iterative solution technique, the matrix equation system in the 3-D finite element modeling of nondestructive probe signals can easily be solved. The sample calculation shows that the presented method is highly effective and can consequently save significant computer resources. 展开更多
