We propose a novel light intensity modulator based on magnetic fluid and liquid crystal(LC) filled photonic crystal fibers(PCFs). The influences of electric and magnetic fields on the transmission intensity are theoretically and experimentally analyzed and investigated. Both the electric and magnetic fields can manipulate the molecular arrangement of LC to array a certain angle without changing the refractive index of the LC. Therefore, light loss in the PCF varies with the electric and magnetic fields whereas the peak wavelengths remain constant. The experimental results show that the transmission intensity decreases with the increase of the electric and magnetic fields. The cut-off electric field is 0.899 V/um at 20 Hz and the cut-off magnetic field is 195 m T. This simple and compacted optical modulator will have a great prospect in sensing applications. 展开更多

An optimization method of fracturing fluid volume strength was introduced taking well X-1 in Biyang Sag of Nanxiang Basin as an example. The characteristic curves of capillary pressure and relative permeability were obtained from history matching between forced imbibition experimental data and core-scale reservoir simulation results and taken into a large scale reservoir model to mimic the forced imbibition behavior during the well shut-in period after fracturing. The optimization of the stimulated reservoir volume(SRV)fracturing fluid volume strength should meet the requirements of estimated ultimate recovery(EUR),increased oil recovery by forced imbibition and enhancement of formation pressure and the fluid volume strength of fracturing fluid should be controlled around a critical value to avoid either insufficiency of imbibition displacement caused by insufficient fluid amount or increase of costs and potential formation damage caused by excessive fluid amount.Reservoir simulation results showed that SRV fracturing fluid volume strength positively correlated with single-well EUR and an optimal fluid volume strength existed, above which the single-well EUR increase rate kept decreasing. An optimized increase of SRV fracturing fluid volume and shut-in time would effectively increase the formation pressure and enhance well production.Field test results of well X-1 proved the practicality of established optimization method of SRV fracturing fluid volume strength on significant enhancement of shale oil well production. 展开更多

A theoretical analysis of the refracted shadows produced by steady and time-decaying liquid vortices under uniform illumination from above is given in this article. An expression for the induced shadow intensity is derived and found to be a function of the vortex's free surface profile, i.e., function of the static pressure distribution. The patterns for different focusing depth are given and compared with previous visualization results from the literature. The phenomenon is examined and illustrated as a bench mark case by using both steady and time-decaying algebraic vortex models. However, this study can be extended to check the feasibility of recovering the main flow properties by analyzing the luminous image intensity of the refracted patterns. The present analysis is valid only when the swirl velocity is order of magnitude higher than the meridional flow components and the vorticity is concentrated within the core region and of intense conditions. 展开更多
