Relative Irradiance Measurement and Bonding Configurations of Amorphous Fluorinated Carbon Films Deposited by Electron Cyclotron Resonance Plasma

The radic... a-C:F films are deposited by microwave electron cyclotron resonance (ECR)plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using trifluoromethane (CHF3) and benzene (C6H6) as source gases at different microwave powers. The radicals in plasma originating from source gases dissociation are analyzed by relative irradiance measurement. The bonding configurations and binding state of a-C:F films are measured with Fourier-transformed infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that a-C:F films are mainly composed of CF radical at lower powers but of CF2 radical at higher powers. The deposition of films is related to the radicals generated in plasma and the main bonding configurations are dependent on the ratio of CF to CF2 radicals in films. 展开更多

Fluorinated carbons(CFx)have been widely applied as lithium primary batteries due to their ultra-high energy density.It will be a great promise if CFx can be rechargeable.In this study,we rationally tune the C-F bond strength for the alkaline intercalated CFx via importing an electronegative weaker element K instead of Li.It forms a ternary phase K_(x)FC instead of two phases(LiF+C)in lithium-ion batteries.Meanwhile,we choose a large layer distance and more defects CFx,namely fluorinated soft carbon,to accommodate K.Thus,we enable CFx rechargeable as a potassium-ion battery cathode.In detail fluorinated soft carbon CF_(1.01) presents a reversible specific capacity of 339 mA h g^(-1)(797 Wh kg^(-1))in the 2nd cycle and maintains 330 mA h g^(-1)(726 Wh kg^(-1))in the 15th cycle.This study reveals the importance of tuning chemical bond stability using different alkaline ions to endow batteries with rechargeability.This work provides good references for focusing on developing reversible electrode materials from popular primary cell configurations. 展开更多

Fluorinated carbons CF_xhold the highest theoretical energy density(e.g.,2180 W h kg^(-1)when x=1)among all cathode materials of lithium primary batteries.However,the low conductivity and severe polarization limit it to achieve its theory.In this study,we design a new electrolyte,namely 1 M LiBF_(4)DMSO:DOL(1:9 vol.),achieving a high energy density in Li/CF_xprimary cells.The DMSO with a small molecular size and high donor number successfully solvates Li^(+)into a defined Li^(+)-solvation structure.Such solvated Li^(+)can intercalate into the large-spacing carbon layers and achieve an improved capacity.Consequently,when discharged to 1.0 V,the CF_(1.12)cathode demonstrates a specific capacity of 1944 m A h g^(-1)with a specific energy density of 3793 W h kg^(-1).This strategy demonstrates that designing the electrolyte is powerful in improving the electrochemical performance of CF_(x) cathode. 展开更多

The surface phase separated structure of polyurethanes is always desired due to the advantage of better biocompatibility, compared with the homogeneous one. The key issue is how to control and characterize the surface morphology. In this work, we report the uppermost surface morphology of fluorinated poly(carbonate urethane)s with fluorinated side chains attached to hard segments as studied by AFM, XPS and contact angle measurement. A self-assembled micro-domain with the fluorinated side chain standing up on the uppermost surface has been proposed for polyurethane with higher fluorinated content, based on the result obtained. 展开更多

Fluorinated amorphous carbon films (a-C:F) were prepared at different temperatures using a microwave electron cyclotron resonance chemical vapor deposition (ECR-CVD) reactor with CHF3 and C2H2 as source gases. Films were annealed at 500℃ in vacuum ambience in order to investigate the relationship of their thermal stability, optical and electrical properties with deposition temperature. Results indicate that the films deposited at high temperature have a less CFX bonding and a more cross-linking structure thus a better thermal stability. They also have a lower bandgap, higher dielectric constant and higher leakage current. 展开更多

These films were deposited by ECR plasma Reactor with CHF3 and C6H6 mixture as source gas. The effects of microwave power, pressure and CHF3/C6H6 ratios on the film deposition rates have been investigated. The fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon radical species in the plasma discharges were analyzed by using the optical emission spectra. It demonstrates that CF2, CF and CH radicals play the important roles in the films being formed. 展开更多

It has been demonstrated that there is a close relationship between relative concentration of C=C bond and optical bandgap, and the films deposited at a higher microwave power have a lower optical bandgap and a better thermal stability. 展开更多

Forming an ultrathin conducting layer on a fluorinated carbon(CFx)surface for reducing severe electrochemical polarization in lithium/fluorinated carbon primary batteries(Li/CF_(x))remains a considerable challenge for achieving batteries with excellent rate capability.Herein,CFxwas modified by using acetylene/argon mixture plasma combined with MnO_(2)particles.The CF_(x)/C/MnO_(2)composite effectively reduced the voltage hysteresis and improved the electrochemical performance of Li/CF_(x).The excellent rate performance of CF_(x)/C/MnO_(2)was due to the high electrochemical activity provided by the atomicscale conductive carbon layer and ultrafine MnO_(2)particles.Compared with pristine CF_(x),the charge transfer resistance of the optimized CF_(x)/C/MnO_(2)decreased from 218.5 to 48.2Ω,the discharge rate increased from 2C to 10C,and the power density increased from 3.11 to 13.44 kW·g^(-1),The intrinsic reason for the enhanced rate performance was attributed to the fact that the ultrathin carbon layer acted as a conductive bridge to reduce the voltage hysteresis at the initial stage of the Li/CF_(x)discharge,and the high electrochemical activity of the ultrafine MnO_(2)particles provided a faster lithium-ion diffusion rate. 展开更多

Actinometrical optical emission spectroscopy (AOES) was used to determine the relative concentrations of various radicals, CF, CF2 CH, C2, H and F, in the plasma as a function of gas flow ratio R, R= [CH4]/([CH4]+[CF4]). The structural evolution of the films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared transmission (FTIR) spectroscopy. The relationship between the film deposition and the precursor radicals in the plasma was discussed. It was shown that CH radical, as well as CF, CF2, C2 radicals are of the precursors, contributing to a-C : F, H film growth. 展开更多

High-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells(HT-PEMFCs)bring new opportunities for portable power generation due to their outstanding advantages such as high tolerance to fuel/air impurities and simplified heat/water management.However,carbon-supported nanostructured Pt-based catalysts running at temperatures over 150℃are challenged by the severe aggregation and carbon corrosion,thus leading to poor durability.Herein,we demonstrate that dendritic Pt-Ni nanoparticles supported on fluorinated carbon black(white carbon black)could significantly enhance the performance and durability of HT-PEMFCs as the cathode catalysts running at 160℃due to the strong interaction of the F and Ni atoms to form a Ni_(x)F_(y) interface on Pt-Ni nanoparticles.With the formation of a stable Ni_(x)F_(y) interface,this integrated HT-PEMFC reached peak power densities of 906 mW cm^(−2) and demonstrated excellent durability at 160℃ under anhydrous H_(2)/O_(2) conditions.This mitigation strategy was applied to Pt-alloy/C electrocatalysts and resulted in the elimination of Pt dissolution in practical fuel cells. 展开更多
