According to current discipline classification, folk literature is usually categorized as an individual research field, distinguished from classical literature or classical canon, which leads to the fact that in current research, the study of folk literature is often separated from the study of classical texts,or even opposed to it.This paper intends to review the relations and relationships between the two and argues that,at least,in ancient Greek world of culture, there is a considerable intersection between folk literature and classical literature. In many cases,a myth appeared both in the two literary fields, and thus these two fields were often intertwined and in conversation.Taking Athenian autochthony as a case study, this paper shows that this myth not only appeared as a folk story in daily occasions such as symposium, architecture, and vase painting, but also entered classic texts such as the tragic works of the three great tragedians and even Plato’s philosophical works, becoming one part of“classical literature”.By examining the application of the myth in folk literature and classical literature,it can be seen that in ancient Greece, folk and classical literature not only communicated and borrowed from each other, but also formed a dialogue between the two, thus constructing a lively and living literary world. 展开更多

In terms of the aesthetic of folk literature and art, most researchers explain it drawing on general aesthetic theory, but pay less attention to the specific context and logic of individual cases.Folk aesthetics is deeply rooted in folk life, including local nature, village culture, farming life and folk belief. These folklore factors constitute the“local logic”,which regulates and influences folk aesthetic culture. The hidden“grammar”must be found in the folk life of the masses with a view to explaining the“essence”of folk aesthetics effectively. The concept of folk literature and art is understood in two different ways:One interprets it as“study of art and literature of folks”,regarding folk as a modifier of study of art and literature.Folk literature and art is regarded as the research object and the discipline is defined according to literary standard. This concept is from the perspective of literary studies, emphasizing that“folk literature and art is a special study of literature and art”.The other interprets it as“study of folk literature and art”,treating literature and art among the folks as the research object and defining the discipline in accordance with cultural standard. This concept is from the perspective of cultural studies. 展开更多

Late nineteenth and early twentieth century China faced a grave national crisis resulting from intense foreign pressure and a rigid political system that was incapable of adapting to the challenges of the modern world.China's decline did, however, lead to a wave of nationalism that swept across Chinese society.Set against this backdrop,a new generation of patriotically minded intellectuals, one with relatively broad exposure to Western thinking and academic methods, turned its focus to enlightening the oppressed masses as a means of bringing about national salvation. These intellectuals pursued this forward-looking aim by looking to the past for inspiration.More specifically, they looked to folk culture as a means of connecting with the common people and weaving together a new discourse that promoted national unity.Under these circumstances,a group of professors at Peking University, including Zhou Zuoren,Liu Fu,and Gu Jiegang, began to search for vernacular works in folk culture. This article examines folklore studies at Peking University expanding from folksongs to folk customs and other forms of folk literature. It focuses on early folklorists’activities, folklore organizations, and primary publications.Under the university’s influence, folklore studies appeared in various newspapers and other research institutions in Beijing and Shanghai in rapid succession. 展开更多
