Kitsch or Visionary？＂ Charismatic Eschatological Community in Folk Art of the American South

Where do we draw the line of divinely inspired visionary art, and Christian kitsch？ Folk artists such as the Rev. Howard Finster and Sister Gertrude Morgan straddled the fence of kitsch and visionary art because they created work that was blatantly polemical and didactic, yet lived lives that inspired thousands of people across the US. The so-called ＂Southern Folk Art＂ movement consists of self-taught artists from the American South who are self-trained and rely heavily on ＂visions＂ and ＂prophetic words＂ as the genesis of their art. This article contends that the art produced by folk artists is documentation of their visionary insights as opposed to detached works that are admired for aesthetic reasons. While folk art of the American South portrays the charismatic imagination with themes of eschatological community and the second coming, it is the ＂visionary artist＂ that is contemplated, rather than his or her bona fide message of redemption and re-creation.

Aesthetic Characteristics Thinking of Minority Folk Art in Guizhou

Guizhou, with a cluster of multiple ethnic groups, is located in the southwest of China. In the province, there is up to 49 ethnic minorities whose population occupies around 1/3 of the total. Thanks to this, the multi-ethnic region is endowed with various folk art and culture of distinctive minority styles. This paper briefly discusses the outline of minority folk art in Guizhou, including its development and features, analyzes the aesthetic expression ways and characteristics of the art, and finally, puts forward some further thoughts from fine art, dancing art and batik art. This paper aims to further facilitate the development and innovation of the minority folk art of Guizhou, and add lustre to the progress of our national minority cultures.

Reverberating Chinese Traditional Folk Art in a Contemporary Context

Envisioned as a practice-based research, this paper explored Chinese traditional folk arts and crafts with a focus on traditional decorative patterns, vivid colors, and symbolic motifs that enliven Foshan style paper-cuttings, New Year wood block prints, paper kites, festival lanterns, and Shiwan pottery figures from the areas of Foshan and Shiwan, near Guangzhou, China. The goal of this research was to create a series of original paintings by investigating Chinese traditional folk arts and handcrafts and integrating them physically or ichnographically on Ho＇s new body of paintings. Chinese traditional motifs including Chinese characters and Buddhist iconographies had already been important motifs in the contemporary Western paintings of Kong Ho for the past 10 years. This paper examined not only the artistic, cultural, and historical values but also the impacts of Chinese traditional folk arts and era~ on Ho＇s painting through a personal research travel and studies of a certain amount of Chinese paper-cuttings, folk prints, pottery, and handcrafts found in the famous Foshan Folk Art Studio and Foshan City Shiwan Ceramics Factory in Foshan, China. Furthermore, this paper investigated the symbolic meanings founded in Ho＇s spiritual paintings with strong Chinese heritage and how he reinterpreted those artifacts in a contemporary context.
