Interpretative study on metaphor＆ metonymy and their influence on foreign language learning

This paper aims to introduce two phenomena--metaphor and metonymy, and analyzes the relationship between them. It＇s analyzed that they play an important role in foreign language learning. Metaphor and metonymy competence should be included in foreign language learning so as to alter students＇ thought models in learning foreign language.

Factors Influencing Foreign Language Learning

For many years, scholars have been studying the factors that influence foreign language learning. Generally speaking,the factors that influence foreign language learning can be divided into internal and external factors. Whether internal or external factors, they are interconnected in playing their different roles in learners' process of acquiring a foreign language. Internal factors are things like learners' age, intelligence, language aptitude, attitude, personality, etc while design of curriculum, teachers' instruction, the status of target language culture, and access to native speakers can be categorized into external factors influencing learners' foreign language learning.

A case study of changing motivation in foreign language learning

After perceiving a common phenomenon of English learning at college in China, this paper presents a case study of motivation. In this study, a questionnaire is conducted twice among 156 Chinese college students when they are sophomores and seniors. It intends to identify some components of foreign language learning motivation and probes into the causes for the changing motivations of students throughout 4-year college education. The findings suggest that the instrumental motivation plays a crucial role in foreign language learning context.

Intercultural Education in a Technology-Enhanced Foreign Language Learning Environment Implementing the TPACK Approach:Challenges and Possibilities

In the plurilingual and multicultural contemporary international setting,the educational systems opt for successfully meeting as well as adapting to the rapid social,economic,and technological changes.Based on the premise that intercultural communicative competence holds a significant potential for foreign language instruction,focus should throw into combining teachers’intercultural knowledge with pedagogy and technology.The prospect of introducing intercultural material within the context of teaching scenarios in the curricula of a technology-enhanced foreign language learning environment where the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge(TPACK)approach is implemented,can positively contribute to the teaching process.Under this perspective,cultural and digitally competent teachers can create a framework which will enable learners to fully develop their interactive and linguistic skills and to effectively communicate in a foreign language promoting its social and multicultural dimension whatever the intercultural context.

Research on Application of Data Mining in Virtual Community of Foreign Language Learning

The construction of virtual community in foreign language learning is a comprehensive foreign language learning environment integrated with foreign language vocabulary database construction and vocabulary retrieval, combining the virtual reality technology to construct the language environment of foreign language learning. The virtual community of foreign language leaming can improve the sense of language authenticity in foreign language learning and improve the quality of foreign language teaching. A method of building a virtual community for foreign language learning is proposed based on data mining technology, data acquisition and feature preprocessing model for building semantic vocabulary of foreign language learning is constructed, the linguistic environment characteristics of the semantic vocabulary data of foreign language learning is analyzed, and the semantic noumenon structure model is obtained. Fuzzy clustering method is used for vocabulary clustering and comprehensive retrieval in the virtual community of foreign language learning, the performance of vocabulary classification in foreign language learning is improved, the adaptive semantic information fusion method is used to realize the vocabulary data mining in the virtual community of foreign language learning, information retrieval and access scheduling for virtual communities in foreign language learning are realized based on data mining results. The simulation results show that the accuracy of foreign language vocabulary retrieval is good, improve the efficiency of foreign language learning.

This study examined the overall effectiveness of reading proficiency especially the extensive reading in ESL.In order to investi-gate the process of acquisition more efficiently,author used reading-to-write approach to investigate the connection between readingand foreign language learning.The research also shows that learners need to be provided with plenty of interesting and comprehensiblebooks and they are supposed to use strategies that they will acquire anyway as they read.

Stereotypes in a Foreign Language Classroom --Modifying Negative Attitudes to Enhance Foreign Language Learning

The aim of the paper is to present various aspects of the phenomenon of stereotyping in the context of FL （foreign language） learning and teaching and to discuss practical solutions to be used in a FL classroom to teach the worm about the worm by questioning the stereotypes learners have of other nations and languages. This paper is an attempt to present some ideas of FL teachers＇ role in developing students＇ socio-cultural competence with the aim of raising their cross-cultural awareness and questioning the stereotypes students bring into a FL classroom. The methodology used was an analysis of fragment of tape scripts from listening comprehension activities from a course book preparing Polish secondary students for the school leaving exam. The topics discussed concern opinions about attitudes towards and judgments of various cultural aspects, be it drinking tea or discussing the weather, impressions people have about other nations, or languages people speak.

Systematizing Teacher Development:A Review of Foreign Language Teacher Learning

Foreign language teaching practice is developing rapidly,but research on foreign language teacher learning is currently relatively fragmented and unstructured.The book Foreign Language Teacher Learning,written by Professor Kang Yan from Capital Normal University,published in September 2022,makes a systematic introduction to foreign language teacher learning,which to some extent makes up for this shortcoming.Her book presents the lineage of foreign language teacher learning research at home and abroad,analyzes both theoretical and practical aspects,reviews the cuttingedge research results,and foresees the future development trend,painting a complete research picture for researchers in the field of foreign language teaching and teacher education as well as front-line teachers interested in foreign language teacher learning.This is an important inspiration for conducting foreign language teacher learning research in the future.And this paper makes a review of the book from aspects such as its content,major characteristics,contributions and limitations.

Analysis of the Current Situation of Spoken Foreign Language Teaching and Learning in Ethnic Regions

With the enhancement of friendship between different nations, foreign language learning has become more and more important. In particular, spoken language is playing a vital role in foreign language learning and practice. Promoting Local Culture Learning in the Context of Foreign Language Instruction

Foreign language learning is also culture learning,which is a dynamic process of bridging the connections between the local culture and the foreign culture.Based on a survey of 667 teachers of English and 278 students in colleges and universities in China,this paper first reviews the current research on the promotion of Chinese culture into the classroom teaching in the context of foreign language learning and then explores future prospects in this area of teaching.The discussion starts with the discussion on these major questions in the process of incorporating local culture in the form of telling stories about China,i.e.,“why need we tell the stories”,“who tells the stories”,“who leads in telling the stories”,“how can we tell the stories”,“what can we tell in the stories”,“where can we tell the stories”,and“how well can we tell the stories”.It continues proposing to pay attention to interdisciplinary research on discourse construction,communication modes and evaluation of communicative effectiveness,and also the design of foreign language curriculum and teaching materials.It concludes that incorporating local culture into the foreign language instruction is of great help to widen students’horizons,cultivate their language proficiency,enhance their culture awareness,strengthen their confidence,and realize shared appreciation of civilization with the people from other cultural backgrounds.

THE STUDY OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING AND ITS PSYCHOLOGICAL RESPONSE

Foreign language learning is hard work while the study on it is a complicated system engineering. It touches not only the problems of linguistics but those of sociology and culture as well. What is involved is not only the foreign language itself but also the emotional elements. Also it covers the macro plan and strategy along with concrete steps and skills. As the foreign language learners, they must undergo kinds of and series of psychological response. There must be a lot of difficulty, problems, even conflicts in the process of learning. Only when they correctly handle the contradictions, coordinate the relationship, make good use of the positive elements and abandon the negative ones, they will get the best result.

Using Technology-Supported Enrichment Activities to Extend Student Learning in a Chinese as a Foreign Language

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether exposing middle school students to content above their ability level produced significant differences in students’confidence in their Chinese as a foreign language competence in each of the following four areas:reading,listening,speaking,and learning vocabulary.Participants(N=30)were sixth and seventh graders.Results of paired t-test analyses indicated that there was no significant difference in student confidence in Chinese reading competence,t(30)=0.78,p=0.22;in Chinese speaking competence,t(30)=-0.50,p=0.31;or to learn Chinese vocabulary,t(30)=-0.80,p=0.21.However,there was a significant difference in student confidence in ability to learn Chinese listening,t(30)=-1.78,p<0.05.It is suggested that exposing students to content well above their ability level can increase their confidence in ability to learn Chinese listening.
