Forming-Precision-Driven Structure Design of Hydraulic Press: Methodology and Case Study

The structure stiffness of presses has great effects on the forming precision of workpieces, especially in near-net or net shape forming. Conventionally the stiffness specification of presses is empirically determined, resulting in poor designs with insufficient or over sufficient stiffness of press structures. In this paper, an approach for the structure design of hydraulic presses is proposed, which is forming-precision-driven and can make presses costeffective by lightweight optimization. The approach consists of five steps:(1)the determination of the press stiffness specification in terms of the forming precision requirement of workpieces;(2)the conceptual design of the press structures according to the stiffness and workspace specifications, and the structure configuration of the press;(3)the prototype design of the press structures by equivalently converting the conceptual design to prototypes;(4)the selection of key structure parameters by sensitivity analysis of the prototype design; and(5)the optimization of the prototype design. The approach is demonstrated and validated through a case study of the structure design of a 100 MN hydraulic press. 展开更多

In order to reduce the resistance and improve the hydrodynamic performance of a ship, two hull form design methods are proposed based on the potential flow theory and viscous flow theory. The flow fields are meshed using body-fitted mesh and structured grids. The parameters of the hull modification function are the design variables. A three-dimensional modeling method is used to alter the geometry. The Non-Linear Programming(NLP) method is utilized to optimize a David Taylor Model Basin(DTMB) model 5415 ship under the constraints, including the displacement constraint. The optimization results show an effective reduction of the resistance. The two hull form design methods developed in this study can provide technical support and theoretical basis for designing green ships. 展开更多

Form milling cutter is built-for-purpose cutter which process the form surface, for example, usually process male and female circular arc face and form trench and so on. From the traditional concept, form milling cutter is divided into pointed tooth and relieving follow its structure. Relieving shaped cutter is more convenient than pointed tooth milling cutter, because only its rake face is needed to grind after it turn into blunting, so the current books which are used in college almost select relieving shaped cutter in order to introduce how to design the form milling cutter.The curve of the back of tooth of relieving cutter is the transversal which is formed by the rear face of tooth in the end cut plane of the milling cutter. In the past, because of the limit of the manufacturing technology, the curve of the back of tooth is often selected Archimedes’ curve, in order that the shovel-nose tool acquire the uniform motion when the cutter shovel the back, in other word, the rear face of the milling cutter rotate its axis by the new cutting lip, in the same time, it move uniformly to the axis in order to form the surface. Although this curve of the back of tooth meet the fixedness of the form of blade around grinding the cutter, the rear angle of the dot of the cutting lip don’t keep fixedness. With the development of the modern manufacturing technology, the unmanageable problem of many complex curves is already easily solved. So it is need to study the optimum profile of the curve of the back of tooth in theory, and study the design theory of the relieving shaped cutter under the condition of new manufacture, in order to ensure that the rear angle of the dot of the cutting lip keep fixedness after the relieving shaped cutter is grinded. The paper derive the curve profile of tooth of the form cutter and the modifier calculation formula of the profile of the cutter edge from the definition of the rear angle of the cutter, which establish the foundation for the precision design and manufacture of other form cutter. 展开更多

Laser forming is a new type of flexible manufacturing process that has become viable for the shaping of metallic components. Process designing of laser forming involves finding a set of process parameters, including laser power, laser scanning paths, and scanning speed, given a prescribed shape. To date, research has focused on process designing for rectangular plates, and only a few studies are presented for axis-symmetric geometries like circular plates. In the present study, process designing for axis-symmetric geometries--with focus on class of shapes--is handled using a formerly proposed distance-based approach. A prescribed shape is achieved for geometries such as quarter-circular and half-circular ring plates. Experimental results verify the applicability of the proposed method for a class of shapes. 展开更多

This paper presents an update on single point incremental forming (SPIF) of sheet metal since 2005. It includes a description of the process with new information on the maximum forming angle, Фmax, for 5052-H32. An indepth example of the successful design and production of parts is given for industry. This includes discussion on production times and surface roughness with details that will help designers. A general design guide for users of SPIF is provided. It is based upon experience gained in the last decade. In general, materials show a trend of decreasing formability with increasing initial thickness. It is shown that for thicker sheet metal, it is recommended using large spherical tools (12.7 mm or larger), or a large fiat-ended tool. The fiat-ended tool provides the best combination of good formability and very low surface roughness. For aluminum, galvanized steel and stainless steel, it is recommended using a fiat-ended tool. Advances in multi-pass techniques and information on successful and useful numerical models which predict forming behaviour are included. Finally, there is a discussion on future work needed in SPIF. 展开更多

In the early design stage,automotive modeling should both meet the requirements of aesthetics and engineering.Therefore,a vehicle CAD(computer aided design)model that can be easily adjusted by feedbacks is necessary.Based on CE-Bezier surface,this paper presents a set of algorithms for parametric segmentation and fairing surface generation in a car model.This model is defined by a simplified automotive template and relevant control points,shape parameters and segmentation parameters,which can be modified to alter the car form efficiently.With this model and the corresponding adjustment method,more than fifty various vehicle models are established in this research according to different parameters.And two methods for calculating similarity index between car models are constructed,which are suitable for brand design trend analysis and modelling design decisionmaking. 展开更多

A simple CFD tool, coupled to a discrete surface representation and a gradient based optimization procedure, is applied to the design of optimal hull forms and optimal arrangement of hulls for a wave cancellation multihull ship. The CFD tool, which is used to estimate the wave drag, is based on the zeroth order slender ship approximation. The hu ll surface is represented by a triangulation, and almost every grid point on the surface can be used as a design variable. A smooth surface is obtained via a si mplified pseudo shell problem. The optimal design process consists of two steps . The optimal center and outer hull forms are determined independently in the fi rst step, where each hull forms are determined independently in the first step, where each hull keeps the same displacement as the original design while the wav e drag is minimized. The optimal outer hull arrangement is determined in the se cond step for the optimal center and outer hull forms obtained in the first step . Results indicate that the new design can achieve a large wave drag reduction i n comparison to the original design configuration. 展开更多
