Stress sensitivity and water blocking in fractured carbonate reservoir formations with low permeability were determined as the main potential damage mechanisms during drilling and completion operations in the ancient buried hill Ordovician reservoirs in the Tarim Basin. Geological structure, lithology, porosity, permeability and mineral components all affect the potential for formation damage. The experimental results showed that the permeability loss was 83.8%-98.6% caused by stress sensitivity, and was 27.9%-48.1% caused by water blocking. Based on the experimental results, several main conclusions concerning stress sensitivity can be drawn as follows: the lower the core permeability and the smaller the core fracture width, the higher the stress sensitivity. Also, stress sensitivity results in lag effect for both permeability recovery and fracture closure. Aimed at the mechanisms of formation damage, a modified low-damage mixed metal hydroxide (MMH) drilling fluid system was developed, which was mainly composed of low-fluorescence shale control agent, filtration control agent, lowfluorescence lubricant and surfactant. The results of experimental evaluation and field test showed that the newly-developed drilling fluid and engineering techniques provided could dramatically increase the return permeability (over 85%) of core samples. This drilling fluid had such advantages as good rheological and lubricating properties, high temperature stability, and low filtration rate (API filtration less than 5 ml after aging at 120 ℃ for 4 hours). Therefore, fractured carbonate formations with low permeability could be protected effectively when drilling with the newly-developed drilling fluid. Meanwhile, field test showed that both penetration rate and bore stability were improved and the soaking time of the drilling fluid with formation was sharply shortened, indicating that the modified MMH drilling fluid could meet the requirements of drilling engineering and geology. 展开更多

To investigate fracture generation and strain variation during SC-CO_(2)(supercritical carbon dioxide)jet fracturing, the model of induced strain is established and the experiments are comprehensively studied. The influence factors are comprehensively explored, such as jet pressure, ambient pressure, etc. With the increasing jet pressure, the fracture morphology changes from parallel cracks to oblique cracks. Both the mass loss of specimen and CO_(2) absorption increase significantly, and the growth rate and minimum value of strain also rise exponentially.Under a high ambient pressure of 8.0 MPa,the main fractures mostly propagated from the surface to the bottom surface of the specimen. The maximum strain and the stable duration under higher ambient pressure are 1.5 times and 10 times, respectively,of the case under the ambient pressure of 5.0 MPa.The comparison shows that the optimal jet distance is 5-7 times the nozzle diameter, resulting in massive mass loss, large CO_(2)absorption,and peak strain. Moreover, the nonlinear variation of strain curve during jet pressurization is related to the type of rock and ambient pressure. These studies clearly show the relationship between the fracture morphology and induced strain, which are crucial for SC-CO_(2)fracturing in shale gas reservoirs. 展开更多

This paper presents an experimental investigation on fracture behavior of epoxy resin-carbon fibers composites interleaved with both neat polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers and A1203-PAN nanofibers. In particular, the paper focuses on the effect of adding Al2O3 nanopartiles in PAN nanofibers, which were incorporated in unidirectional (UD) laminates. The effectiveness of adding a thin film made of Al2O3-PAN on the fracture behavior of the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) has been addressed by comparing the energy release rates, obtained by testing double cantilever beam (DCB) samples under mode I loading condition. A general improvement in interlaminar fracture energy of the CFRP is observed when the both neat PAN nanofibers and Al2O3-PAN nanofibers are interleaved. However, higher interlaminar strength has been observed for the samples with a thin film of Al2O3-PAN nanofibers, suggesting a better stress distribution and stress transformation from resin-rich area to reinforcement phase of hybrid composites. 展开更多

Morphology of hydraulic fracture surface has significant effects on oil and gas flow, proppant migration and fracture closure, which plays an important role in oil and gas fracturing stimulation. In this paper,we analyzed the fracture surface characteristics induced by supercritical carbon dioxide(SC-CO_(2))and water in open-hole and perforation completion conditions under triaxial stresses.A simple calculation method was proposed to quantitatively analyze the fracture surface area and roughness in macro-level based on three-dimensional(3D)scanning data.In micro-level,scanning electron micrograph(SEM)was used to analyze the features of fracture surface. The results showed that the surface area of the induced fracture increases with perforation angle for both SC-CO_(2)and water fracturing, and the surface area of SC-CO_(2)-induced fracture is 6.49%e58.57%larger than that of water-induced fracture. The fractal dimension and surface roughness of water-induced fractures increase with the increase in perforation angle, while those of SC-CO_(2)-induced fractures decrease with the increasing perforation angle.A considerable number of microcracks and particle peeling pits can be observed on SC-CO_(2)-induced fracture surface while there are more flat particle surfaces in water-induced fracture surface through SEM images, indicating that fractures tend to propagate along the boundary of the particle for SC-CO_(2)fracturing while water-induced fractures prefer to cut through particles. These findings are of great significance for analyzing fracture mechanism and evaluating fracturing stimulation performance. 展开更多

Theoretical consideration was conducted on a relation between pore diameter and interfacialarea between pores and fibers when pores uniforinly distribute in C/C composites. It was shownthat bonding at the fiber/matrix interface apparently decreased with decreasing a pore diameter, and consequently a new idea of microspace modification concept was proposed for controllingfracture behavior of C/C composites. Four types of C/C composites with various pore structureswere fabricated by hot-pressing, and their fracture behavior was investigated by three pointbending tests. The fracture behavior of the C/C composites was changed from brittle one topseudo ductile one with decreasing the pore diameter. This result supported the validity of themicrospace modification concept proposed in this paper. 展开更多

Regarding the enormous demands of numerous industries to fossil fuels,it is essential to select the proper enhanced oil recovery approaches for vertical and horizontal wells to supply the demands with the optimum expenditure.Water and gas injectivity as the secondary enhanced oil recovery techniques would be preferentially considered regarding their low costs of performances rather than chemical recovery and thermal techniques.Injected gas tends to push oil through pores or cracks in the matrix block and lead them to the production well. Therefore, injection of gas may significantly increase the recovery factor in these reservoirs. In this research, different injection scenarios in a fractured carbonate reservoir in the west of Iran are being simulated by the PVT modules of Eclipse software. The purpose of this research is to analyze the possibility of gradually increasing the extent of recovery by injecting carbon dioxide, methane, and water, and different injectivity patterns are considered in this research. The selection of injectivity patterns is severely based on the highest recycling rate of gas injection on different injection scenarios, and the injectivity scenarios were being compared with the natural depletion scenario.Consequently,Co2 injection(about 60%)had the highest oil recovery factor and CH4 and TB(about 54%and 53%)injectivity scenarios had the second and third highest rate of the oil recovery factor. 展开更多

The nature of the pull-out system of carbon nanorope/polyethylene(CNRP/PE) composite is studied by using molecular dynamics approach. The deformation of the CNRP/PE composites in pull-out process is exhibited. The influence of twisting deformation on the interfacial interaction of the composites is investigated. The results show that the energy of the pull-out system is conserved; and the interfacial bonding is weak resulting in a sliding failure of the CNRP inside PE matrix. 展开更多

The fracture splitting property of medium carbon steel 37MnSiS microalloyed with V up to 0. 45% was investigated by using simulated fracture splitting test, for the development of new crackable medium carbon steel to manufacture high performance connecting rod. Conventional high carbon steel C70S6 was used for comparison. The results show that the volume fraction of both ferrite and V-rich M( C,N) particles increases, and the pearlite interlamellar spacing decreases with increasing V content, which in turn results in gradual increase of strength and decrease of ductility and impact energy. The fracture splitting property of the tested steel could be improved significantly due to the increase of V content mainly through the precipitation hardening mechanism of fine M( C,N) precipitates. The fraction of brittle cleavage fracture in the crack initiation area increases noticeably with increasing V content and full brittle cleavage fracture surface could be obtained when V content was increased to 0. 45%. It is concluded that medium carbon steel with V content higher than about 0. 28% possesses not only comparable or even higher mechanical properties with those of conventional steel C70S6,but also excellent fracture splitting property, and therefore,is more suitable to fabricate high performance fracture splitting connecting rod. 展开更多
