The far-field microdynamic disturbance caused by the excavation of deep mineral resources and underground engineering can induce surrounding rock damage in high-stress conditions and even lead to disasters. However, the mechanical properties and damage/fracture evolution mechanisms of deep rock induced by microdynamic disturbance under three-dimensional stress states are unclear. Therefore,a true triaxial multilevel disturbance test method is proposed, which can completely simulate natural geostress, excavation stress redistribution(such as stress unloading, concentration and rotation),and subsequently the microdynamic disturbance triggering damaged rock failure.Based on a dynamic true triaxial test platform, true triaxial microdynamic disturbance tests under different frequency and amplitudes were carried out on monzogabbro. The results show that increasing amplitude or decreasing frequency diminishes the failure strength of monzogabbro.Deformation modulus gradually decreases during disturbance failure. As frequency and amplitude increase, the degradation rate of deformation modulus decreases slightly, disturbance dissipated energy increases significantly, and disturbance deformation anisotropy strengthens obviously.A damage model has been proposed to quantitatively characterize the disturbance-induced damage evolution at different frequency and amplitude under true triaxial stress. Before disturbance failure, the micro-tensile crack mechanism is dominant, and the micro-shear crack mechanism increases significantly at failure. With the increase of amplitude and frequency, the micro-shear crack mechanism increases. When approaching disturbance failure, the acoustic emission fractal dimension changes from a stable value to local large oscillation, and finally increases sharply to a high value at failure. Finally, the disturbance-induced failure mechanism of surrounding rock in deep engineering is clearly elucidated. 展开更多

In order to investigate the influence on shale gas well productivity caused by gas transport in nanometer- size pores, a mathematical model of multi-stage fractured horizontal wells in shale gas reservoirs is built, which considers the influence of viscous flow, Knudsen diffusion, surface diffusion, and adsorption layer thickness. A dis- crete-fracture model is used to simplify the fracture mod- cling, and a finite element method is applied to solve the model. The numerical simulation results indicate that with a decrease in the intrinsic matrix permeability, Knudsen diffusion and surface diffusion contributions to production become large and cannot be ignored. The existence of an adsorption layer on the nanopore surfaces reduces the effective pore radius and the effective porosity, resulting in low production from fractured horizontal wells. With a decrease in the pore radius, considering the adsorption layer, the production reduction rate increases. When the pore radius is less than 10 nm, because of the combined impacts of Knudsen diffusion, surface diffusion, and adsorption layers, the production of multi-stage fractured horizontal wells increases with a decrease in the pore pressure. When the pore pressure is lower than 30 MPa, the rate of production increase becomes larger with a decrease in pore pressure. 展开更多

A comprehensive understanding of the failure behavior and mechanism of coal is a prerequisite for dealing with dynamic problems in mining space. In this study, the failure behavior and mechanism of coal under uniaxial dynamic compressive loads were experimentally and numerically investigated. The experiments were conducted using a split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB)system. The results indicated that the typical failure of coal is lateral and axial at lower loading rates and totally smashed at higher loading rates. The further fractography analysis of lateral and axial fracture fragments indicated that the coal failure under dynamic compressive load is caused by tensile brittle fracture. In addition, the typical failure modes of coal under dynamic load were numerically reproduced. The numerical results indicated that the axial fracture is caused directly by the incident compressive stress wave and the lateral fracture is caused by the tensile stress wave reflected from the interface between coal specimen and transmitted bar.Potential application was further conducted to interpret dynamic problems in underground coal mine and it manifested that the lateral and axial fractures of coal constitute the parallel cracks in the coal mass under roof fall and blasting in mining space. 展开更多

Coalbed gas extraction is an important means of exploiting and utilizing gas resources,as well as a means of preventing coal mine disasters. In view of the low gas extraction rate from coalbeds with high gas content and low permeability,a method of improving permeability through deep-hole cumulative blasting is applied to develop initial directional fractures using a jet flow.Under the action of the blasting stress wave and detonation gas wedge, the fractures extend over a large range within the coal, thereby improving coalbed permeability. This study focuses on the criteria of cumulative blasting-induced coalbed fracturing based on a literature review of the penetration effect of cumulative blasting. On this basis,we summarize the coal fracturing zone, crack extension process, and the key technologies of charging and hole sealing for cumulative blasting. In addition, the latest research progress in the optimization of field test drilling and blasting parameters for cumulative blasting is introduced.Research findings indicate that the permeability improvement mechanism of cumulative blasting could be further enhanced, and the technology and technical equipment are in urgent need of improvement. Finally, development trends in the cumulative blasting permeability improvement technique are identified. 展开更多

To study the damage and fracture mechanism of 6063 aluminum alloy under different stress states, three kinds of representative triaxial stress states have been adopted, namely smooth tensile, notch tensile, and pure shear. The results of the study indicate the following.During the notch tensile test,a relatively higher stress triaxiality appears in the root of the notch. With the applied loading increasing, the volume fraction of microvoids in the root of the notch increases continuously. When it reaches the critical volume fraction of microvoids, the specimen fractures.During the pure shear test, the stress triaxiality almost equals to zero, and there is almost no microvoids but a shear band at the center of the butterfly specimen. The shear band results from nonuniform deformation constantly under the shear stress. With stress concentration, cracks are produced within the shear band and are later coalesced. When the equivalent plastic strain reaches the critical value(equivalent plastic fracture strain),the butterfly specimen fractures.During the smooth tensile test, the stress triaxiality in the gauge of the specimen remains constant at 0.33.Thus,the volume of microvoids of the smooth tensile test is less than that of the notch tensile test and the smooth specimen fractures due to shearing between microvoids. The G-T-N damage model and Johnson-Cook model are used to simulate the notch tensile and shear test, respectively. The simulated engineering stress-strain curves fit the measured engineering stress-strain curves very well.In addition, the empirical damage evolution equation for the notch specimen is obtained from the experimental data and FEM simulations. 展开更多

The failure mechanism of a cylindrical shell cut into fragments by circumferential detonation collision was experimentally and numerically investigated.A self-designed detonation wave regulator was used to control the detonation and cut the shell. It was found that the self-designed regulator controlled the fragment shape. The macrostructure and micro-characteristics of fragments revealed that shear fracture was a prior mechanism, the shell fractured not only at the position of detonation collision, but the crack also penetrated the shell at the first contact position of the Chapmen-Jouguet(C-J)wave.The effects of groove number and outer layer thickness on the fracture behavior were tested by simulations. When the thickness of the outer layer was 5e18 mm,it has little effect on fragmentation of the shell, and shells all fractured at similar positions. The increase of the groove number reduced the fracture possibility of the first contact position of the C-J wave. When the groove number reached 7 with a 10 mm outer layer(1/4 model),the fracture only occurred at the position of detonation collision and the fragment width rebounded. 展开更多

To study the effect of some parameters, such as, length and fraction of glass fiber (GF), and the fraction of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH), on the mechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (GF/PP) composites, tensile tests, bending tests and impact tests were conducted. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to characterize the fracture mechanisms of the composites. The results show that, compared with 3 mm GF, 9 mm GF can significantly improve the strength of the composite better. Addition of PP-g-MAH, a kind of grafting agent, into the PP-30% LGF composite can result in a better mechanical properties because of the strengthening of the bonding interface between the matrix and the fiber. When the mass fraction of GF is 30% and the PP-g-MAH fraction is 6%, the mechanical properties of the composite are the best. 展开更多

The properties of boron carbide-lanthanum boride composite material prepared by hot pressed sintering method was tested, and lanthanum boride as a sintering aid for boron carbide was investigated. The result shows that the hardness of boron carbide-lanthanum boride increases with the increasing content of lanthanum boride. When the content of the lanthanum boride is 6%, the hardness reaches its supreme value of 31.83 GPa, and its hardness is improved nearly 20.52% compared to monolithic boron carbide. The content of the lanthanum boride does not greatly affect flexibility strength, however, it gives much effect on fracture toughness. The curve of fracture toughness likes the form of saw-toothed wave as the content of lanthanum boride increases in the test. When the content of the lanthanum boride is 6%, the fracture toughness reaches its supreme value of 5.14 MPa·m 1/2, which is improved nearly 39.67% compared with monolithic boron carbide materials. The fracture scanning electric microscope analysis of boron carbide-lanthanum boride composite material shows that, with the increase of the content of lanthanum boride, the interior station of monolithic boron carbide is changed. The crystallite arrangement is so compact that pores disappear gradually. The main fracture way of boron carbide-lanthanum boride composite material is intercrystalline rupture, while the transcrystalline rupture is minor, which is in accordance with fracture mechanism of ceramic material. It indicates that this change of fracture mode by the addition of lanthanum boride gives rise to the improvement of the fracture toughness. 展开更多

Grain growth, mechanical properties, and fracture mechanism of nickel-based GH4099 superalloy are investigated using heat treatments, tensile tests, optical microscopy (OM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The OM observation shows that the matrix grains (γ-grains) undergo an apparent growth during the solution treatment. The grain size diameter increases from 100 to 174 μm when the solution temperature rises from 1100℃ to 1160℃ for 30 min. When the holding time increases from 15 to 60 min at 1140℃, the grain size diameter increases from 140 to 176 μm, indicating that the γ-grain growth is more sensitive to temperature than time. Standard deviation, <em>S</em>v, and the grain size distribution are utilized to characterize the microstructural uniformity. To predict the grain size more accurately, we develop the grain growth kinetics and find that the growth index is close to 5. The yield strength (<em>R</em>p0.2), tensile strength (<em>R</em>m), and ductility (<em>A</em>f) are also measured. It is found that the effect decreases in the order cooling rate, solution temperature, time. <em>R</em>p0.2 reduces by 47% with the increase in the cooling rate from 1℃ to 8000℃/min, while both strength and ductility exhibit little changes with time. The SEM results show that the fracture surfaces have typical mixed brittle and ductile characteristics when specimens are subjected to water quenching and air cooling. However, a complete brittle fracture occurs under furnace cooling conditions. The EDS analysis indicates that the brittle γ' (Ni3Ti) phase precipitates around the γ-grain boundary during the slow cooling process, which is the main factor yielding the complete brittle fracture. Finally, the optimal solution treatment scheme for the GH4099 superalloy is proposed—a temperature of 1140℃ for 30 min followed by air cooling. 展开更多

The mechanism of grain fracturing in a zirconia metering nozzle used in the continuous casting process was studied. The phase composition, microstructure, and chemical composition of the residual samples were studied using an X-ray fluorescence analyzer, scanning electron microscope, and electron probe. Results revealed that the composition, structure, and mineral phase of the original layer, transition layer, and affected layer of the metering nozzle differed because of stabilizer precipitation and steel slag permeation. The stabilizer MgO formed low-melting phases with steel slag and impure SiO2 on the boundaries(pores) of zirconia grains; consequently, grain fracturing occurred and accelerated damage to the metering nozzle was observed. 展开更多

Due to the nanometer scale pore size and extremely low permeability of a shale matrix, traditional Darcy's law can not exactly describe the combined gas transport mechanisms of viscous flow and Knudsen diffusion.Three transport models modified by the Darcy equation with apparent permeability are used to describe the combined gas transport mechanisms in ultra-tight porous media, the result shows that Knudsen diffusion has a great impact on the gas transport and Darcy's law cannot be used in a shale matrix with a pore diameter less than 1 μm.A single porosity model and a double porosity model with consideration of the combined gas transport mechanisms are developed to evaluate the influence of gas transport mechanisms and fracture parameters respectively on shale gas production. The numerical results show that the gas production predicted by Darcy's law is lower than that predicted with consideration of Knudsen diffusion and the tighter the shale matrix, the greater difference of the gas production estimates. In addition, the numerical simulation results indicate that shale fractures have a great impact on shale gas production.Shale gas cannot be produced economically without fractures. 展开更多

In the mining process of deep metal mines, diff erent types of rock mass instability failures are caused by strong mining disturbance. It is beneficial to master the fracture mechanism of rock mass in time to effectively prevent and control the ground pressure disasters.Microseismic signals are generated by the propagation and expansion of cracks inside the rock mass that contain plentiful information about the structural changes of rock mass. The ratio of the radiated energy of S and P waves(Es/Ep)of microseismic events can fast and eff ectively calculate the rock fracture mechanism, which is widely used for ground pressure hazard risk assessment. In this paper, this method was used to analyze the fracture mechanism of rock mass around deep stope in Hongtoushan copper mine and Ashele copper mine.Furthermore, the spatial distribution characteristics and proportion changes of microseismic events with diff erent fracture mechanisms along with the mining process were studied. The results show that tensile cracks play a dominant role, accounting for 62%of the total events, during non-shear fracturing of the rock mass caused by the stoping unloading eff ect, while shear cracks occupy 68%of the total events during orebody slip failure. When the physical and mechanical properties of the orebody and rock mass are signifi cantly diff erent, slip failure along their contact zone is prone to occur under blasting disturbance.During deep mining,it is necessary to control the exposed area of the roof by each stoping, especially during the earlier mining stage,to avoid tensile stress concentration. The temporal and spatial variation of tension cracks and shear cracks induced by roof damage obtained in this paper can guide the prevention and control of ground pressure disasters in deep mining eff ectively. 展开更多

The results of stress vs deflection curve and SEM examinations revealed that the fracture mechanism of 3D, five-directional braided (SiO2)/SiO2 composite was a mixture mode of ductile and brittle. The ductile mode was attributed to the weak bonding strength of fiber/matrix at low temperature. Transverse crack often occurs in the trailing edge region of the bladewhen subjected to the excessive edgewise fatigue load.In this paper a refined model was established through local mesh refinement methods in order to investigate the initiation mechanism of crack and its extension in blade trailing edge. The material stress around the crack in trailing edge region under different thicknesses is calculated based on the fracture mechanics theory. The factors affecting the fatigue robustness of blade trailing edge are concluded by investigating the results of finite element analysis and coupons test.Compared with the laminate, the lower fatigue strength of the adhesive is the cause of the transverse crack of the adhesive joint at the trailing edge. The increase of the adhesive thickness at the adhesive joint will significantly increase the stress concentration factor at the crack region and accelerate the crack extension of the laminate. In final,a practical design scheme to prevent crack initiation is given for the manufacture of the wind turbine blade. 展开更多

This study investigates the tensile failure mechanisms in granitic rock samples at different scales by means of different types of tests. To do that,we have selected a granitic rock type and obtained samples of different sizes with the diameter ranging from 30 mm to 84 mm.The samples have been subjected to direct tensile strength(DTS)tests, indirect Brazilian tensile strength(BTS)tests and to two fracture toughness testing approaches.Whereas DTS and fracture toughness were found to consistently grow with sample size, this trend was not clearly identified for BTS,where after an initial grow,a plateau of results was observed. This is a rather complete database of tensile related properties of a single rock type.Even if similar databases are rare, the obtained trends are generally consistent with previous scatter and partial experimental programs. However, different observations apply to different types of rocks and experimental approaches. The differences in variability and mean values of the measured parameters at different scales are critically analysed based on the heterogeneity, granular structure and fracture mechanics approaches. Some potential relations between parameters are revised and an indication is given on potential sample sizes for obtaining reliable results.Extending this database with different types of rocks is thought to be convenient to advance towards a better understanding of the tensile strength of rock materials. 展开更多

Based on the results of drilling, tests and simulation experiments, the shales of the Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation in the Gulong Sag of the Songliao Basin are discussed with respect to hydrocarbon generation evolution, shale oil occurrence, and pore/fracture evolution mechanism. In conjunction with a substantial amount of oil testing and production data, the Gulong shale oil enrichment layers are evaluated and the production behaviors and decline law are analyzed. The results are drawn in four aspects.First, the Gulong shales are in the stage of extensive hydrocarbon expulsion when R_(0) is 1.0%-1.2%,with the peak hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency of 49.5%approximately.In the low-medium maturity stage, shale oil migrates from kerogen to rocks and organic pores/fractures.In the medium-high maturity stage, shale oil transforms from adsorbed state to free state.Second, the clay mineral intergranular pores/fractures,dissolution pores, and organic pores make up the majority of the pore structure.During the transformation, clay minerals undergo significant intergranular pore/fracture development between the minerals such as illite and illite/smectite mixed layer.A network of pores/fractures is formed by organic matter cracking.Third, free hydrocarbon content, effective porosity, total porosity, and brittle mineral content are the core indicators for the evaluation of shale oil enrichment layers.Class-I layers are defined as free hydrocarbon content equal or greater than 6.0 mg/g,effective porosity equal or greater than 3.5%,total porosity equal or greater than 8.0%,and brittle mineral content equal or greater than 50%.It is believed that the favourable oil layers are Q2-Q3 and Q8-Q9.Fourth,the horizontal wells in the core area of the light oil zone exhibit a high cumulative production in the first year, and present a hyperbolic production decline pattern, with the decline index of 0.85-0.95,the first-year decline rate of 14.5%-26.5%,and the single-well estimated ultimate recovery(EUR)greater than 2.0×10^(4)t.In practical exploration and production, more efforts will be devoted to the clarification of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion mechanisms, accurate testing of porosity and hydrocarbon content/phase of shale under formation conditions, precise delineation of the boundary of enrichment area, relationship between mechanical properties and stimulated reservoir volume, and enhanced oil recovery,in order to improve the EUR and achieve a large-scale,efficient development of shale oil. 展开更多

Acoustic emission(AE)signals contain substantial information about the internal fracture characteristics of rocks and are useful for revealing the laws governing the release of energy stored therein.Reported here is the evolution of rock failure with diferent master crack types as investigated using Brazilian splitting tests(BSTs),direct shear tests(DSTs),and uniaxial compression tests(UCTs).The AE parameters and typical modes of each fracture type were obtained, and the energy release characteristics of each fracture mechanism were discussed. From the observed changes in the AE parameters, the rock fracture process exhibits characteristics of staged intensifcation. The scale and energy level of crack activity in the BSTs were signifcantly lower than those in the DSTs and UCTs.The proportion of tensile cracks in the BSTs was 65%–75%,while the proportions of shear cracks in the DSTs and UCTs were 75%–85%and 70%–75%,respectively.During the rock loading process under diferent conditions, failure was accompanied by an increased number of shear cracks. The amplitude, duration, and rise time of the AE signal from rock failure were larger when the failure was dominated by shear cracks rather than tensile ones, and most of the medium-and high-energy signals had medium to low frequencies. After calculating the proposed energy amplitude ratio, the energy release of shear cracks was found to exceed that of tensile cracks at the same fracture scale. 展开更多
