This problem is statically indeterminate since there are 4 forces of reaction and only 3 equations of static equilibrium. The model that predicted the empirical reactions correctly used a law of static friction to complement the equations of static equilibrium. The present paper examines in greater theoretical and experimental detail the role of friction in accounting for the forces of reaction on a fixed ladder. The reported measurements confirm that forces parallel and normal to the support at the top of the ladder are linearly proportional with a constant coefficient of friction irrespective of the magnitude or location of the load, as assumed in the theoretical model. However, measurements of forces parallel and normal to the support at the base of the ladder are linearly proportional with coefficients that depend sensitively on the location (although not the magnitude) of the load. This paper accounts quantitatively for the different effects of friction at the top and base of the ladder under conditions of usual use whereby friction at the vertical support alone is insufficient to keep the ladder from sliding. A theoretical model is also proposed for the unusual circumstance in which friction at the vertical support can keep the ladder from sliding.展开更多
In this paper,we present a numerical simulation method of electromagnetic(EM)fields induced by a moving ship(EMFMS),which consist of both the shaft-rate EM field and the static EM field.The shaft-rate EM fields in the...In this paper,we present a numerical simulation method of electromagnetic(EM)fields induced by a moving ship(EMFMS),which consist of both the shaft-rate EM field and the static EM field.The shaft-rate EM fields in the frequency domain are first obtained by solving the partial differential equations together with suitable boundary conditions,and then they are transformed into the time domain by using the inverse Fourier transform.Finally,the static fields are added to obtain the EM fields of a moving ship.The effects of the source current intensity and the source position on the EM fields of a moving ship are discussed in detail.A field example of EM response of a moving ship is presented and its characteristics are analyzed.展开更多
Friction stir spot welding with refilling by friction forming process (FSSW-FFP) was successfully modified using filler plate. Both of this new refilling technique and conventional friction stir spot welding (FSSW...Friction stir spot welding with refilling by friction forming process (FSSW-FFP) was successfully modified using filler plate. Both of this new refilling technique and conventional friction stir spot welding (FSSW) process were used to weld A1 6061-T6 lap shear specimens and the results were compared. Effects of tool rotational speeds on mechanical and metallurgical properties in both the cases were studied. Static shear strength of refilled weld samples was found to be better than those welded by conventional FSSW process at all tool rotational speeds. This is explained in terms of effective increase in cross-sectional area of weld nugget due to addition of more material from filler plate, thereby eliminating the probe hole. Failure mechanisms were discussed and fracture surfaces were analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The hardness profile of the welds exhibited a W-shaped appearance in both the processes and the minimum hardness was measured in the HAZ.展开更多

If the internal energy change had not any relation with the volume and pressure, we could confirm the first law of thermodynamics in theory. Simultaneously, the internal energy change is the state function that shall be able to be proved in theory. If the internal energy change depended on the volume and pressure, we could not prove that the internal energy change is the state function and the chemical thermodynamics theory is right. The extended or modified Bernoulli equation can be derived from the energy conservation law, and the internal energy change, heat, and friction are all considered in the derivation procedure. The extended Bernoulli equation could be applied to the flying aircraft and mechanical motion on the gravitational field, for instance, the rocket and airplane and so on. This paper also revises some wrong ideas, viewpoints, or concepts about the thermodynamics theory and Bernoulli equation.展开更多
