The experiment is conducted on MM-1000 friction test machine, which tests friction wear property of copper-based brake materials by powder metallurgy at different brake speeds. It shows that the coefficient of friction and wear volume are greatly influenced by brake speed. When the brake speed is 4000 r/min, which is a bit higher, the material still has a higher coefficient of friction with 0.47. When the brake speed is over 4000r/min, the coefficient of friction decreased rapidly. When the brake speed is 3000r/min, the material’s wear is in its minimum. That is to say no matter how higher or lower the brake speed is the wear volume is bigger relatively. With the brake speed of the lower one it mainly refers to fatigue wear; while of higher one it mainly refers to abradant and oxidation wear. 展开更多

With tank special purpose lubricating oil,100N,200N and 800N loading force and different loading times,spray-formed high-silicon aluminium alloy and military superpower engine steel cylinder sleeve materials were used for comparative friction test and friction pair comparision test under simulated engine work condition. The results showed that, compared with steel cylinder sleeve materials,high-silicon aluminium alloy showed more excellent wearing resistance. The friction mechanism analysis of high-silicon aluminium alloy indicated that high-hardness particles in soft parent metal had determinative function, including wearing resistance and supporting ability when wearing happened.Dents on soft parent metal surface produced by friction could store oil and were helpful for lubrication. The friction trace analysis showed that,high-hardness particles in high-silicon aluminium alloy could produce friction trace on 42MnCr52 steel surface, which proved friction function of high-hardness particles in high-silicon aluminium alloy. 展开更多

Dry sliding friction and wear test of Nb containing low carbon microalloyed steel was carried out at room temperature, and the effect of Nb on the wear behavior of the steel,as welll as the mechanism was studied.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry(EDS) were employed to analyze the morphology and composition of the worn surface, and the structure evolution of the plastic deformation layer. The carbide content and type in the steel were analyzed by the electrolytic extraction device and X-ray diffraction(XRD).The experimental results demonstrate that the addition of 0.2% Nb can refine the grain and generate Nb C to improve the wear resistance of the steel.By enhancing the load and speed of wear experiment, the wear mechanism of the test steel with 0.2% Nb changes from slight oxidation wear to severe adhesion wear and oxidation wear.Compared with the load, the increase in the rotation speed exerts a greater influence on the wear of the test steel. 展开更多

Fasteners of 718 alloys are used to set up connection between each support and other components for ITER system, metal-based Ag solid lubricant coating is widely used as an anti-seizure lubricant coating due to its strong low-temperature shear resistance. But the poor adhesion to the steel surfaces has been a critical restriction for applying the silver coatings to the practical machine elements. In this work, an 8-μm silver self-lubricating coating was deposited on the surface of 718 alloy by the method of magnetron sputtering. The coating was uniform, dense and consistent. The wear mechanism was investigated by analyzing the friction and wear properties of the coating. Stress is one of the important impacts on the friction coefficient, the results showed that it first increased and then decreased with the increase of pressure at room temperature and under vacuum. Temperature exerted an effect on the silver self-lubricating coating. A study was conducted under vacuum on the friction and wear performance of the coating at 300 K, 225 K, 155 K, and 77 K, respectively. The results showed that the wear mechanism and wear state varied under various low-temperature conditions, with the severity of wear reaching the maximum only at 225 K. Through the same silver coating process, the washer of superbolt was improved by silver coating treatment. 展开更多

The influence of rare earth on the friction and wear characteristics of magnesium alloy AZ91 and AM60 were studied. The results show that the wear resistance properties of rare earth magnesium alloys are better than those of matrix alloy under the testing conditions. The anti wear behaviour of AZ91 alloy is much better than that of AM60 alloy. In dry sliding process, magnesium alloys undergo a transition from mild wear to severe wear. The sliding friction and wear behaviors of Mg-11Y-5Gd-2Zn-0.5Zr (wt%) alloy were investigated under oil lubricant condition by pin-on-disk configuration with a constant sliding distance of 1,000 m in the temperature range of 25-200℃. Results indicate that the volumetric wear rates and average friction coefficients decrease with the increase of sliding speeds, and increase with the increase of test temperature below 150℃. The hard and thermally stable Mg12(Y,Gd)Zn phase with long-period stacking order structure in the alloy presents significant wear resistance, The wear mechanism below 100℃ is abrasive wear as a result of plastic extrusion deformation. The corporate effects of severe abrasive, oxidative, and delaminating wear result in the tribological mechanism above 100℃. 展开更多

Nanostructured (ns) materials, i.e., polycrystalline materials with grain sizes in the nanometer regime (typically below 100 nm), have drawn considerable attention in the past decades due to their unique properties such as high strength and hardness. Wear resistance of ns materials, one of the most important properties for engineering materials, has been extensively investigated in the past decades. Obvious differences have been identified in friction and wear behaviors Between the ns materials and their corresponding coarse-grained (cg) counterparts, consistently correlating with their unique structure characteristics and mechanical properties. On the other hand, the superior tribological properties of ns materials illustrate their potential applications under contact loads. The present overview will summarize the important progresses achieved on friction and wear behaviors of ns metallic materials, including ultrafine-grained (ufg) materials in recent years. Tribological properties and effects on friction and wear behaviors of ns materials will be discussed under different wear conditions including abrasive wear, sliding wear, and fretting wear. Their correlations with mechanical properties will be analyzed. Perspectives on development of this field will be highlighted as well. 展开更多

In the study, for the composite materials reinforced by brass fibers, theinfluence of dominant ingredients, such as organic adhesion agent, cast iron debris, brass fiber, and graphite powder, on the friction-wear characteristics was investigated. The friction-wearexperiment was carried out on the block-on-ring tribometer MM 200. The worn surfaces of the frictionpair consisting of the composite materials and grey cast iron HT 200 under dry sliding frictionwere examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive analysis (EDX) anddifferential thermal analysis-thermogravimetric analysis (DTA-TAG). The experimental results showedthat the friction coefficient and the wear loss of the composite material increase obviously withthe increase of cast iron debris content, but decrease obviously with the increase of graphitepowder content, and increase a little when the mass fraction of brass fiber was over 19 percent, andthe orientation of brass fiber has obvious influence on friction-wear property. When the massfraction of organic adhesion agent was about 10-11 percent, the composite materials have anexcellent friction-wear performance. The effect of magnetic field on the tribological process of sleeve-ring pair lubricated by WRL lubricants was investigated by means of a NG-x wear tester and a PS5013 video microscope. The friction coefficient(f) and the wear weight(W) in lubricating test with WRL lubricant were decreased with the increase in the magnetic field vertical to the rubbing surface, and an almost zero wear lubricating situation was gained in a magnetic field of 1000A/m. The captured wear micro particles on the rubbing surface were observed in the testing process, and the theoretical analysis of magnetic effects was completed. It is indicated that the magnetic field has not only a capturing action of wear micro particles on the worn surface, but also a inducing polarization of magnetic anisotropy of lubricant molecular. The actions promote the absorption of WRL lubricant into the wear surface as well as wear micro-particles, so that a good tribological effect is obtained when both magnetic field and WRL present. 展开更多

Friction and wear of the sliding components in an automobile cause an increase in both fuel consumption and emission. Many engine components involved with sliding contact are all susceptible to scuffing failure at some points during their operating period. Therefore,it is important to evaluate the effects of various surface coatings on the tribological characteristics of the piston ring and cylinder block surface of a diesel engine.Wear and scuffing tests were conducted using a friction and wear measurement of the piston ring and cylinder block in a low friction diesel engine. The frictional forces, wear amounts and cycles to scuffing in the boundary lubricated sliding condition were measured using the reciprocating wear tester. The tester used a piece of the cylinder block as the reciprocating specimen and a segment of the piston ring material as the fixed pin.Several coatings on the ring specimen were used, such as DLC,TiN,Cr-ceramic and TiAlN,in order to improve the tribological characteristics of the ring. The coefficients of friction were monitored during the tests, and the wear volumes of the piston ring surfaces with various coatings were compared.Test results show that the DLC coating exhibits better tribological properties than the other coatings. The graphite structure of this coating is responsible for the low friction and wear of the DLC film. The TiN and DLC coatings show better scuffing resistance than the other coatings. The TiN and Cr-ceramic coated rings show good wear resistance and high friction. 展开更多

The high-temperature friction and wear properties of TiAl alloys and Ti2AlN/TiAl composites (TTC) in contact with nickel-based superalloy were studied. The results showed that, at 800 and 1 000 ℃, the coefficient of the friction (COF) decreased with the increase of sliding velocity and the wear loss of the TTC decreased with the increase of volume fraction of Ti2AlN. The wear mechanisms of the pairs are adhesive wear and the wear debris mainly comes from the contacting nickel-based superalloy. The intergranular fracture and the cracking of the phase boundary in the lamellar structure are the wear mode of TiAl alloy. The wear mode of TTC is phase boundary fracture and adhesive spalling. The abrasive resistance of TTC is slightly higher than that of TiAl alloy. 展开更多

Ni-matrix composite coating containing AI2O3 nano-particles is prepared by brush plating. The effects of the nano-particles on the microstructure, microhardness and tribological properties of the composite coating under the lubrication of a diesel oil containing sand are investigated. The results show that the microstructure of the composite coating is finer than that of the pure nickel coating due to the codeposition of the nano-particles. When the nano-particle concentration in the electroplating bath reaches 20 g/L, the microhardness, and wear resistance of the composite coating is as much as 1.6 times and 1.3-2.5 times of those of the pure nickel coating respectively. TiC/ZA43 composites were fabricated by XD TM and stirring casting techniques. The tribology properties of the unreinforced ZA43 alloy and the composites were studied by using a block on ring apparatus. Experimental results show that the incorporation of TiC particles improves the microstructure of ZA43 matrix alloy. The coefficient of friction μ and the width of worn groove decrease with the increase of TiC volume fraction φ (TiC). The width of worn groove and μ of the composite during wear testing increase with increasing the applied load. Metallographic examinations reveal that unreinforced ZA43 alloy has deep ploughing grooves with obvious adhesion phenomenon, whereas TiC/ZA43 composites have smooth worn surface. A BN-containing additive, the boron and nitrogen modified rapeseed oil (abbreviated as BNR),was prepared by chemical modification of rapeseed oil with boric and nitrous compounds. The friction and wear performances of the AZ91D magnesium alloy against the GCr15 bearing steel under lubrication of rapeseed oil containing BNR were evaluated on a SRV tribotester. The topography and chemical species of the worn surfaces of magnesium alloy were analyzed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS),respectively. The test results indicated that the friction and wear of the magnesium alloy-steel tribomates could be effectively reduced by incorporating BNR into the rapeseed oil lubricant. The friction coefficients and the wear scars of magnesium alloy decreased with an increasing content of BNR.The surface lubricated with the BNR-doped rapeseed oil demonstrated less wear as compared with that lubricated with neat rapeseed oil.The enhanced anti-wear and friction-reducing abilities of rapeseed oil provided by BNR in the lubrication of magnesium alloy against steel were ascribed to the formation of a composite boundary lubrication film due to the strong adsorption of BNR and rapeseed oil onto the lubricated surfaces and their tribochemical reactions with magnesium alloy. 展开更多

Current studies of a seawater axial piston pump mainly solve the problems of corrosion and wear in a slipper pair by selecting materials with corrosion resistance, self-lubrication, and wear resistance. In addition, an appropriate biomimetic non-smooth surface design for the slipper pair can further improve the tribological behavior. In this paper, 316 L stainless steel and CF/PEEK were selected to process the upper and bottom specimens, and the biomimetic non-smooth surface was introduced into the interface between the friction pair. The friction and wear tests were performed on a MMD-5 A tester at a rotation speed of 1000 r/min and load of 200 N under seawater lubricated condition. The results indicate that the main friction form of the smooth surface friction pair corresponds to abrasive wear and adhesive wear and that it exhibits a friction coe cient of 0.05–0.07, a specimen temperature of 56 ℃, a high wear rate, and surface roughness. Pits on the non-smooth surface friction pairs produced hydrodynamic lubrication and reduced abrasive wear, and thus the plowing e ect is their main friction form. The non-smooth surface friction pairs exhibit a friction coe cient of 0.03–0.04, a specimen temperature of 48 ℃, a low wear rate, and surface roughness. The study has important theoretical significance for enriching the lubrication, friction, and wear theory of a seawater axial piston pump, and economic significance and military significance for promoting the marine development and the national defense military. 展开更多

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond films have attracted more attentions due to their excellent mechanical properties. Whereas as-fabricated traditional diamond films in the previous studies don't have enough adhesion or surface smoothness, which seriously impact their friction and wear performance, and thus limit their applications under extremely harsh conditions. A boron doped, undoped microcrystalline and fine grained composite diamond (BD-UM-FGCD) film is fabricated by a three-step method adopting hot filament CVD (HFCVD) method in the present study, presenting outstanding comprehensive performance, including the good adhesion between the substrate and the underlying boron doped diamond (BDD) layer, the extremely high hardness of the middle undoped microcrystalline diamond (UMCD) layer, as well as the low surface roughness and favorable polished convenience of the surface fine grained diamond (FGD) layer. The friction and wear behavior of this composite film sliding against low-carbon steel and silicon nitride balls are studied on a ball-on-plate rotational friction tester. Besides, its wear rate is further evaluated under a severer condition using an inner-hole polishing apparatus, with low-carbon steel wire as the counterpart. The test results show that the BD-UM-FGCD film performs very small friction coefficient and great friction behavior owing to its high surface smoothness, and meanwhile it also has excellent wear resistance because of the relatively high hardness of the surface FGD film and the extremely high hardness of the middle UMCD film. Moreover, under the industrial conditions for producing low-carbon steel wires, this composite film can sufficiently prolong the working lifetime of the drawing dies and improve their application effects. This research develops a novel composite diamond films owning great comprehensive properties, which have great potentials as protecting coatings on working surfaces of the wear-resistant and anti-frictional components. 展开更多
