Water decoupling charge blasting excels in rock breaking, relying on its uniform pressure transmission and low energy dissipation. The water decoupling coefficients can adjust the contributions of the stress wave and quasi-static pressure. However, the quantitative relationship between the two contributions is unclear, and it is difficult to provide reasonable theoretical support for the design of water decoupling blasting. In this study,a theoretical model of blasting fracturing partitioning is established. The mechanical mechanism and determination method of the optimal decoupling coefficient are obtained. The reliability is verified through model experiments and a field test. The results show that with the increasing of decoupling coefficient, the rock breaking ability of blasting dynamic action decreases, while quasi-static action increases and then decreases. The ability of quasi-static action to wedge into cracks changes due to the spatial adjustment of the blast hole and crushed zone. The quasi-static action plays a leading role in the fracturing range, determining an optimal decoupling coefficient. The optimal water decoupling coefficient is not a fixed value, which can be obtained by the proposed theoretical model.Compared with the theoretical results, the maximum error in the model experiment results is 8.03%,and the error in the field test result is 3.04%. 展开更多

To study the effects of the initiation position on the damage and fracture characteristics of linear-charge blasting, blasting model experiments were conducted in this study using computed tomography scanning and three-dimensional reconstruction methods. The fractal damage theory was used to quantify the crack distribution and damage degree of sandstone specimens after blasting. The results showed that regardless of an inverse or top initiation, due to compression deformation and sliding frictional resistance, the plugging medium of the borehole is effective. The energy of the explosive gas near the top of the borehole is consumed. This affects the effective crushing of rocks near the top of the borehole, where the extent of damage to Sections Ⅰ and Ⅱ is less than that of Sections Ⅲ and Ⅳ. In addition, the analysis revealed that under conditions of top initiation, the reflected tensile damage of the rock at the free face of the top of the borehole and the compression deformation of the plug and friction consume more blasting energy, resulting in lower blasting energy efficiency for top initiation. As a result, the overall damage degree of the specimens in the top-initiation group was significantly smaller than that in the inverse-initiation group. Under conditions of inverse initiation, the blasting energy efficiency is greater, causing the specimen to experience greater damage. Therefore, in the engineering practice of rock tunnel cut blasting, to utilize blasting energy effectively and enhance the effects of rock fragmentation, using the inverse-initiation method is recommended. In addition, in three-dimensional(3D) rock blasting, the bottom of the borehole has obvious end effects under the conditions of inverse initiation, and the crack distribution at the bottom of the borehole is trumpet-shaped. The occurrence of an end effect in the 3D linear-charge blasting model experiment is related to the initiation position and the blocking condition. 展开更多

Water-coupled charge blasting is a promising technique to efficiently break rock masses. In this study, numerical models of double boreholes with water-coupled charge are established using LS-DYNA and are calibrated by the tests of rock masses subjected to explosion loads to examine its performance. The crack levels of rock mass induced by water-coupled charge blasting and air-coupled charge blasting are first compared. It is found that water-coupled charge blasting is more appropriate to fracture deep rock mass than air-coupled charge blasting. In addition, the effects of rock properties,water-coupled charge coefficients, and borehole connection angles on the performance of water-coupled charge blasting are investigated. The results show that rock properties and water-coupled charge coefficients can greatly influence the crack and fragmentation levels of rock mass induced by water-coupled charge blasting under uniform and non-uniform in-situ stresses. However, changing borehole-connection angles can only affect crack and fragmentation levels of rock mass under non-uniform in-situ stresses but barely affect those under uniform in-situ stresses.A formula is finally proposed by considering the above-mentioned factors to provide the design suggestion of water-coupled charge blasting to fracture rock mass with different in-situ stresses. 展开更多

Blasting operations, which are crucial to open-pit mine production due to their simplicity and efficiency, require precise control through accurate vibration velocity calculations. The conventional Sadowski formula mainly focuses on blast center distance but neglects the amplification effect of blasting vibration waves by terraced terrain, from which the calculated blasting vibration velocities are smaller than the actual values, affecting the safety of the project. To address this issue, our model introduces the influences of slope and time into Sadowski formula to measure safety through blast vibration displacement. In the northern section of the open-pit quartz mine in Jinchang City,Gansu Province,China, the data of a continuous blasting slope project are referred to.Our findings reveal a noticeable vibration amplification effect during blasting when a multi-stage slope platform undergoes a sudden cross-sectional change near the upper overhanging surface. The amplification vibration coefficient increases with height, while vibration waves within rocks decrease from bottom to top.Conversely, platforms without distinct crosssectional changes exhibit no pronounced amplification during blasting. In addition, the vibration intensity decreases with distance as the rock height difference change propagates. The results obtained by the proposed blast vibration displacement equation incorporating slope shape influence closely agree with real-world scenarios.According to Pearson correlation coefficient(PPMCC)analysis, the average accuracy rate of our model is 88.84%,which exceeds the conventional Sadowski formula(46.92%). 展开更多

Stress waves affect the stress field at the crack tip and dominate the dynamic crack propagation. Therefore, evaluating the influence of blasting stress waves on the crack propagation behavior and the mechanical characteristics of crack propagation is of great significance for engineering blasting. In this study,ANSYS/LS-DYNA was used for blasting numerical simulation,in which the propagation characteristics of blasting stress waves and stress field distribution at the crack tip were closely observed. Moreover,ABAQUS was applied for simulating the crack propagation path and calculating dynamic stress intensity factors(DSIFs).The universal function was calculated by the fractalmethod. The results show that:the compressive wave causes the crack to close and the reflected tensile wave drives the crack to initiate and propagate, and failure mode is mainly tensile failure. The crack propagation velocity varies with time, which increases at first and then decreases, and the crack arrest occurs due to the attenuation of stress waves and dissipation of the blasting energy. In addition, crack arrest toughness is smaller than the crack initiation toughness, applied pressure waveforms(such as the peak pressure, duration, waveforms, wavelengths and loading rates)have a great influence on DSIFs.It is conducive to our deep understanding or the study of blasting stress waves dominated fracture, suggesting a broad reference for the further development of rock blasting in engineering practice. 展开更多

Accurately estimating blasting vibration during rock blasting is the foundation of blasting vibration management. In this study,Tuna Swarm Optimization(TSO),Whale Optimization Algorithm(WOA),and Cuckoo Search(CS)were used to optimize two hyperparameters in support vector regression(SVR).Based on these methods, three hybrid models to predict peak particle velocity(PPV)for bench blasting were developed.Eighty-eight samples were collected to establish the PPV database, eight initial blasting parameters were chosen as input parameters for the predictionmodel, and the PPV was the output parameter. As predictive performance evaluation indicators, the coefficient of determination(R2),rootmean square error(RMSE),mean absolute error(MAE),and a10-index were selected. The normalizedmutual information value is then used to evaluate the impact of various input parameters on the PPV prediction outcomes.According to the research findings,TSO,WOA,and CS can all enhance the predictive performance of the SVR model. The TSO-SVR model provides the most accurate predictions. The performances of the optimized hybrid SVR models are superior to the unoptimized traditional prediction model. The maximum charge per delay impacts the PPV prediction value the most. 展开更多

The deformation control of surrounding rock in gobside roadway with thick and hard roof poses a significant challenge to the safety and efficiency of coal mining. To address this issue,a novel approach combining directional and non-directional blasting techniques, known as combined blasting, was proposed. This study focuses on the experimental investigation of the proposed method in the 122108 working face in Caojiatan Coal Mine as the engineering background. The initial phase of the study involves physical model experiments to reveal the underlying mechanisms of combined blasting for protecting gob-side roadway with thick and hard roof. The results demonstrate that this approach effectively accelerates the collapse of thick and hard roofs, enhances the fragmentation and expansion coefficient of gangue, facilitates the filling of the goaf with gangue, and provides support to the overlying strata, thus reducing the subsidence of the overlying strata above the goaf.Additionally, the method involves cutting the main roof into shorter beams to decrease the stress and disrupt stress transmission pathways.Subsequent numerical simulations were conducted to corroborate the findings of the physical model experiments, thus validating the accuracy of the experimental results.Furthermore, field engineering experiments were performed, affirming the efficacy of the combined blasting method in mitigating the deformation of surrounding rock and achieving the desired protection of the gob-side roadway. 展开更多

Integrating liquid CO_(2)phase transition blasting(LCPTB)technology with hydraulic fracturing(HF)methods can help reduce wellbore damage, create multiple radial fractures, and establish a complex fracture network. This approach significantly increases the recovery efficiency of low-permeability oil and gas fields.Accurately calculating the number of fractures caused by LCPTB is necessary to predict production enhancement effects and optimize subsequent HF designs. However, few studies are reported on large-scale physical model experiments in terms of a method for calculating the fracture number. This study analyzed the initiation and propagation of cracks under LCPTB,derived a calculation formula for crack propagation radius under stress waves, and then proposed a new, fast, and accurate method for calculating the fracture number using the principle of mass conservation.Through ten rock-breaking tests using LCPTB,the study confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed calculation approach and elucidated the variation rule of explosion pressure,rock-breaking scenario, and the impact of varying parameters on fracture number. The results show that the new calculation method is suitable for fracturing technologies with high pressure rates.Recommendations include enlarging the diameter of the fracturing tube and increasing the liquid CO2 mass in the tube to enhance fracture effectiveness. Moreover, the method can be applied to other fracturing technologies, such as explosive fracturing(EF)within HF formations, indicating its broader applicability and potential impact on optimizing unconventional resource extraction technologies. 展开更多

Blasting-induced cracks in the rock surrounding deeply buried tunnels can result in water gushing and rock mass collapse, posing significant safety risks. However, previous theoretical studies on the range of blasting-induced cracks often ignore the impact of the in-situ stress, especially that of the intermediate principal stress. The particle displacement−crack radius relationship was established in this paper by utilizing the blasthole cavity expansion equation, and theoretical analytical formulas of the stress−displacement relationship and the crack radius were derived with unified strength theory to accurately assess the range of cracks in deep surrounding rock under a blasting load.Parameter analysis showed that the crushing zone size was positively correlated with in-situ stress, intermediate principal stress, and detonation pressure, whereas negatively correlated with Poisson ratio and decoupling coefficient. The dilatancy angle-crushing zone size relationship exhibited nonmonotonic behavior. The relationships in the crushing zone and the fracture zone exhibited opposite trends under the influence of only in-situ stress or intermediate principal stress. As the in-situ stress increased from 0 to 70 MPa,the rate of change in the crack range and the attenuation rate of the peak vibration velocity gradually slowed. 展开更多

Aiming at the problems of the traditional method of assessing distribution of particle size in bench blasting, a support vector machines (SVMs) regression methodology was used to predict the mean particle size (X50) resulting from rock blast fragmentation in various mines based on the statistical learning theory. The data base consisted of blast design parameters, explosive parameters, modulus of elasticity and in-situ block size. The seven input independent variables used for the SVMs model for the prediction of X50 of rock blast fragmentation were the ratio of bench height to drilled burden (H/B), ratio of spacing to burden (S/B), ratio of burden to hole diameter (B/D), ratio of stemming to burden (T/B), powder factor (Pf), modulus of elasticity (E) and in-situ block size (XB). After using the 90 sets of the measured data in various mines and rock formations in the world for training and testing, the model was applied to 12 another blast data for validation of the trained support vector regression (SVR) model. The prediction results of SVR were compared with those of artificial neural network (ANN), multivariate regression analysis (MVRA) models, conventional Kuznetsov method and the measured X50 values. The proposed method shows promising results and the prediction accuracy of SVMs model is acceptable. 展开更多

Some factors affecting the effects of quake insulation groove, such as the size, the depth and the position of the quake insulation groove, are studied. The amplitudes of the blasting seismic waves under the conditions of the different sizes of the quake insulation groove are measured. According to the experiments, the effects of the quake insulation groove are related to the position, the distance, the energy of the explosion source and the size of the quake insulation groove itself. The farther it is from the explosion source, the smaller the energy is. The lower its position is and the larger its size is, the more remarkable the effects of the quake insulation groove are. 展开更多

The accurate identification of delay time in millisecond blasting plays an important role in the optimization of blasting design and reduction of vibration effect. Through a case study of a surge shaft blasting project, the capability of the EMD (empirical mode decomposition) method in identifying the delay time of short millisecond blasting with precise initiation was compared with the instantaneous energy method based on Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT). The recognition rate of the EMD method was more than 80%, while the instantaneous energy method was less than 25%. By analyzing the instantaneous energy of single-hole blasting signal, it was found that the instantaneous energy method was adaptable to millisecond blasting with delay time longer than half of the energy peak period. The EMD method was used to identify delay time of millisecond blasting in Zijinshan open-pit mine. According to the identification results, the blasting parameters were optimized for controlling the blast-induced vibration and reducing the large block ratio. The field data showed that the velocity peak of ground vibration was reduced by more than 30%under almost the same maximum charge per delay by the optimization of delay time and detonating detonators. Combining with slag-remaining blasting and burden optimization of the first row, the large block ratio was reduced to less than 3%. The research results proved that the identification method based on HHT was feasible to optimize the blasting design. The identification method is also of certain reference value for design optimization of other similar blasting projects. 展开更多

The ores were generally lower than the medium hardness and easy to be driUed and blasted. However, the questions of boulder yield, "pushing-wall" accident rate, and brow damage rate were not effectively controlled in practical blasting. The model test of a similar material shows that the charge concentration of bottom blastholes in the sector is too high; the pushing wall is the fundamental reason for the poor blasting effect. One of the main methods to adjust the explosive distribution is to increase the length of charged blastholes. Therefore, the field tests with respect to increasing the length of uncharged blastholes were made in 12# stope of-95 subsection and 6# stope of Beiminghe iron mine. This paper took the test result of 12# stope as an example to analyze the impact of charge structure on blasting effect and design an appropriate blasting parameter that is to similar to No. 12 stope. 展开更多

The law of blasting vibration caused by blasting in rock is very complex.Traditional numerical methods cannot well characterize all the influencing factors in the blasting process. The effects of millisecond time, charge length and detonation velocity on the blasting vibration are discussed by analyzing the characteristics of vibration wave generated by finite length cylindrical charge. It is found that in multi-hole millisecond blasting, blasting vibration superimpositions will occur several times within a certain distance from the explosion source due to the propagation velocity difference of P-wave and S-wave generated by a short column charge. These superimpositions will locally enlarge the peak velocity of blasting vibration particle. The magnitude and scope of the enlargement are closely related to the millisecond time.Meanwhile, the particle vibration displacement characteristics of rock under long cylindrical charge is analyzed. The results show that blasting vibration effect would no longer increase when the charge length increases to a certain extent. This indicates that the traditional simple calculation method using the maximum charge weight per delay interval to predict the effect of blasting vibration is unreasonable.Besides, the effect of detonation velocity on blasting vibration is only limited in a certain velocity range. When detonation velocity is greater than a certain value, the detonation velocity almost makes no impact on blasting vibration. 展开更多

Blasting is the most cost effective methodology to break rock for mining or civil engineering applications.A good production blast will break only the rock that is needed to be removed, leaving the host rock with minimal damage. The control of rock damage due to blasting is very important when it comes to mine or construction design, safety, and cost.Damage to the host rock due to a production blast could result in failures, overbreak and unstable ground.Knowing how far the fractures generated by a production blast will go into the host rock is a valuable tool for engineers to design a safe highwall while keeping the actual excavation close to the design.Currently, there are several methods available to predict damage due to blasting. The accuracy of many of these methods is questionable, and in most cases, the methodologies over predict the results. This often leads to inefficient mines and poor construction works. When the current methodologies are reviewed, each one presents sound approaches, but in many cases they also lack consideration of other variables that, according to the authors, need to be included when predicting blast damage. This paper presents a practical methodology to assess the rock damage from blasting by combining other methodologies. The proposed method allows consideration of more variables when compared to available methods, resulting in a more accurate rock damage assessment. The method uses the estimation of the generated levels of peak particle velocity with the distance from a production blast presented by Persson and Holmberg, the peak particle velocity damage ranges proposed by Forsyth and the relationship between the static compressive strength and dynamic compressive strength of rocks from Liu.The new methodology was validated using the data published in a large-scale study performed in granite by Siskind. 展开更多

The blast-induced ground vibration prediction using scaled distance regression analysis is one of the most popular methods employed by engineers for many decades. It uses the maximum charge per delay and distance of monitoring as the major factors for predicting the peak particle velocity(PPV). It is established that the PPV is caused by the maximum charge per delay which varies with the distance of monitoring and site geology. While conducting a production blasting, the waves induced by blasting of different holes interfere destructively with each other, which may result in higher PPV than the predicted value with scaled distance regression analysis. This phenomenon of interference/superimposition of waves is not considered while using scaled distance regression analysis. In this paper, an attempt has been made to compare the predicted values of blast-induced ground vibration using multi-hole trial blasting with single-hole blasting in an opencast coal mine under the same geological condition. Further, the modified prediction equation for the multi-hole trial blasting was obtained using single-hole regression analysis. The error between predicted and actual values of multi-hole blast-induced ground vibration was found to be reduced by 8.5%. 展开更多

This study explores the key physicochemical factors affecting the hydrophilic characteristics of iron mine blasting dust(BD). The BD is separated into an unwetted part(UWBD, hydrophobic part) and a wetted part(WBD, hydrophilic part). Its particle size, true density(TD), pore parameters, mineral composition, and surface compounds are comprehensively characterized and compared. The results indicate that a smaller particle size and more developed pore parameters are two key factors responsible for the strong hydrophobicity of the BD. The mineral composition of the BD has no direct effect on its wetting properties;however, it indirectly influences the deposition characteristics of the BD in water by affecting its TD. Unlike coal dust, the surface organic composition of the BD does not affect its wettability and the peak area of C–C/C–H hydrophobic groups in the C 1s X-ray photoelectron spectrum of the UWBD(45.03%) is smaller than that in the C 1s spectrum of the WBD(68.30%). Thus, eleven co-influencing processes of physicochemical properties of the BD on its wettability are summarized. This research sheds light on the key factors affecting the wettability of the BD. 展开更多
