Functional Discourse Analysis of Andersen's "The Little Match-Seller"

Within a framework of Halliday's SFL (Systemic Functional Linguistics), this paper takes a functional approach to the analysis of the fairy tale--"The Little Match-Seller" (Andersen, 1846). The analysis is carried out in three respects: genre, register and language. Genre analysis indicates that the schematic structure of the fairy tale is very much in line with the one mentioned by Hasan. Register analysis shows that the material process is the most dominant one; the Finite in the clauses is predominantly in past tenses, and most of the Themes in the text are unmarked ones. Language analysis reveals that the lexical density in the fairy tale is relatively low. The findings in this paper can help deepen people's understanding of the textual features of English fairy tales. 展开更多

By using ZHANG Qiao's method for identifying fuzzy words (1998), the present paper makes a statistic analysis of fuzzy words appearing in about 43,000 words of 6 academic research articles in management science. A distribution curve of fuzzy words in management research articles is drawn in accordance with the structures of the articles, and it is proved to be reasonable for tile discourse function of each section. Furthermore, the fuzzy words are divided into three categories and eleven sub-categories, including Category Ⅰ-fuzzy words, Category Ⅱ-fuzzy words+non-fuzzy part / non-fuzzy part+fuzzy words, Category Ⅲ-approximators+fuzzy words. Distribution of fuzzy words varies in different sections of research articles in management science, because of different communicative purposes or discourse functions. Introduction section and Conclusion section have a higher occurrence rate of fuzzy words than Abstract section and Methodology and Data section. 展开更多

Beyond Reading Comprehension--Cultivating Critical Readers through Critical Press News Reading

English newspapers, which have already been widely used as supplementary readings in an input-poor Chinese EFL context, are chosen and modified as needed for the proficiency levels of the class and used with suitable activities and exercises that engage students in an active and purposeful construction of the meaning of the text in extensive reading instruction. However, critical reading of the press news, which requires readers moving beyond comprehension, is rarely involved. This article, using Fairclough's critical discourse analysis (henceforth, CDA) as the theoretical framework, and Halliday's systemic functional grammar (henceforth, SFG) as the analytical tool in the analysis of the news texts, makes a sample analysis of the critical news reading from China Daily on China's response to the US-led campaign against terrorism after the September 11 events, 2001. The analysis made is undertaken in three stages: (1) the Transitivity analysis of the headlines, (2) the textual meaning of the clauses in terms of Themes, and (3) the explanations made to give grounding for the preceding analysis. The paper concludes with the hypothesis that integrating critical news reading into extensive reading instruction will not only improve students' reading skills, but also increase their adequate comprehension to the reading materials, as well as cultivate their critical reading competence. 展开更多

This research,grounded in the theory of discourse intonation,investigates Chinese EFL learners' intonation features in interactive context.Its research findings reveal that Chinese EFL learners differ from British native speakers in their application of tone units,prominence selection and tone choice.It further points out that these intonation features are caused on the one hand by Chinese EFL learners' relatively low English proficiency level and on the other hand by their lack of awareness of the communicative and discourse function of intonation.Based on these findings,this research proposes that a discourse-based awareness-raising approach to intonation teaching in the input-poor Chinese EFL context might be of pedagogical necessity and effectiveness. 展开更多
