We present a study of low surface brightness galaxies(LSBGs) selected by fitting the images for all the galaxies inα.40 SDSS DR7 sample with two kinds of single-component models and two kinds of two-component models(disk+bulge):single exponential, single sersic, exponential+deVaucular(exp+deV),and exponential+sérsic(exp+ser).Under the criteria of the B band disk central surface brightness μ_(0,disk)(B)≥22.5 mag arcsec^(-2) and the axis ratio b/a> 0.3,we selected four none-edge-on LSBG samples from each of the models which contain 1105,1038,207,and 75 galaxies, respectively. There are 756 galaxies in common between LSBGs selected by exponential and sersic models, corresponding to 68.42% of LSBGs selected by the exponential model and 72.83% of LSBGs selected by the sersic model, the rest of the discrepancy is due to the difference in obtaining μ_(0) between the exponential and sersic models.Based on the fitting,in the range of 0.5≤n≤1.5,the relation of μ_(0) from two models can be written as μ_(0,sérsic)-μ_(0,exp)=-1.34(n-1).The LSBGs selected by disk+bulge models(LSBG_(2)comps) are more massive than LSBGs selected by single-component models(LSBG_1comp),and also show a larger disk component.Though the bulges in the majority of our LSBG_(2)comps are not prominent, more than 60% of our LSBG_(2)comps will not be selected if we adopt a single-component model only.We also identified 31 giant low surface brightness galaxies(gLSBGs) from LSBG_(2)comps.They are located at the same region in the color-magnitude diagram as other gLSBGs.After we compared different criteria of gLSBGs selection,we find that for gas-rich LSBGs,M_(*)> 10^(10)M_⊙ is the best to distinguish between gLSBGs and normal LSBGs with bulge. 展开更多

The star-forming clumps in star-bursting dwarf galaxies provide valuable insights into understanding the evolution of dwarf galaxies. In this paper,we focus on five star-bursting dwarf galaxies featuring off-centered clumps in the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory survey.Using the stellar population synthesis software Fitting Analysis using Differential evolution Optimization,we obtain the spatially resolved distribution of the star formation history, which allows us to construct the g-band images of the five galaxies at different ages. These images can help us to probe the evolution of the morphological structures of these galaxies. While images of a stellar population older than 1 Gyr are typically smooth, images of a stellar population younger than 1 Gyr reveal significant clumps, including multiple clumps which appear at different locations and even different ages.To study the evolutionary connections of these five galaxies to other dwarf galaxies before their star-forming clumps appear,we construct the images of the stellar populations older than three age nodes, and define them to be the images of the"host"galaxies. We find that the properties such as the central surface brightness and the effective radii of the hosts of the five galaxies are in between those of dwarf ellipticals(dEs)and dwarf irregulars(dIrrs),with two clearly more similar to dEs and one more similar to dIrrs.Among the five galaxies,8257-3704 is particularly interesting,as it shows a previous starburst event that is not quite visible from its gri image, but only visible from images of the stellar population at a few hundred million years. The star-forming clump associated with this event may have appeared at around 600 Myr ago and disappeared at around 40 Myr ago. 展开更多

The structural parameters of a galaxy can be used to gain insight into its formation and evolution history. In this paper,we strive to compare the Milky Way’s structural parameters to other, primarily edge-on,spiral galaxies in order to determine how our Galaxy measures up to the Local Universe. For our comparison,we use the galaxy structural parameters gathered from a variety of literature sources in the optical and near-infrared wave bands. We compare the scale length, scale height, and disk flatness for both the thin and thick disks, the thick-to-thin disk mass ratio, the bulge-to-total luminosity ratio, and the mean pitch angle of the Milky Way’s spiral arms to those in other galaxies. We conclude that many of the Milky Way’s structural parameters are largely ordinary and typical of spiral galaxies in the Local Universe, though the Galaxy’s thick disk appears to be appreciably thinner and less extended than expected from zoom-in cosmological simulations of Milky Way-mass galaxies with a significant contribution of galaxy mergers involving satellite galaxies. 展开更多

How galaxies assemble masses through their own star formation or interaction with the external environment is still an important topic in the field of galaxy formation and evolution. We use Value Added Catalogs with galaxy features that are spatially and temporally resolved from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 17 to investigate the mass growth histories of early-type galaxies(ETGs)and late-type galaxies(LTGs).We find that the mass growth of ETGs is earlier than that of LTGs for massive galaxies(M_(*)>10^(10)M_⊙),while low-mass(M_(*)≤10^(10)M_⊙)ETGs have statistically similar mass assembly histories as low-mass LTGs.The stellar metallicity of all massive galaxies shows a negative gradient and basically does not change with time. However,in low-mass galaxies, the stellar metallicity gradient of elliptical galaxies is negative, and the stellar metallicity gradient of lenticular and spiral galaxies evolves from positive to negative.ETGs are not all in a high-density environment, but exhibit mass dependence. As the tidal strength increases, the star formation rate of low-mass ETGs rapidly decreases. These results support a picture where massive galaxies exhibit inside-out quenching mode, while low-mass galaxies show outside-in quenching mode.Environmental effects play an important role in regulating the mass assembly histories of low-mass ETGs. 展开更多

A fourth mechanism is the attenuation of the light as given by the Beer-Lambert law. The average value of the Hubble constant is therefore derived by processing the galaxies of the NED-D catalog in which the distances are independent of the redshift. The observed anisotropy of the Hubble constant is reproduced by adopting a rim model, a chord model, and both 2D and 3D Voronoi diagrams. 展开更多

Great experimental results and observations achieved by Astronomy in the last decades revealed new unexplainable phenomena. Astronomers have conclusive new evidence that a recently discovered “dark galaxy” is, in fact, an object the size of a galaxy, made entirely of dark matter. They found that the speed of the Earth’s rotation varies randomly each day. 115 years ago, the Tunguska Event was observed, and astronomers still do not have an explanation of It. Main results of the present article are: 1) Dark galaxies explained by the spinning of their Dark Matter Cores with the surface speed at equator less than the escape velocity. Their Rotational Fission is not happening. Extrasolar systems do not emerge;2) 21-cm Emission explained by the self-annihilation of Dark Matter particles XIONs (5.3 μeV);3) Sun-Earth-Moon Interaction explained by the influence of the Sun’s and the Moon’s magnetic field on the electrical currents of the charged Geomagma (the 660-km layer), and, as a result, the Earth’s daylength varies;4) Tunguska Event explained by a huge atmospheric explosion of the Superbolide, which was a stable Dark Matter Bubble before entering the Earth’s atmosphere. 展开更多

Based on the star formation histories of galaxies in halos with different masses, we develop an empirical model to grow galaxies in dark matter halos. This model has very few ingredients, any of which can be associated with observational data and thus be efficiently assessed. By applying this model to a very high resolution cosmological N-body simulation, we predict a number of galaxy properties that are a very good match to relevant observational data. Namely, for both centrals and satellites, the galaxy stellar mass functions up to redshift z ≈ 4 and the conditional stellar mass functions in the local universe are in good agreement with observations. In addition, the two point correlation function is well predicted in the different stellar mass ranges explored by our model. Furthermore, after applying stellar population synthesis models to our stellar composition as a function of redshift, we find that the luminosity functions in the 0.1_u,0.1_g,0.1_r,0.1_i and 0.1_z bands agree quite well with the SDSS observational results down to an absolute magnitude at about –17.0. The SDSS conditional luminosity function itself is predicted well. Finally, the cold gas is derived from the star formation rate to predict the HI gas mass within each mock galaxy. We find a remarkably good match to observed HI-to-stellar mass ratios. These features ensure that such galaxy/gas catalogs can be used to generate reliable mock redshift surveys. 展开更多

In spiral galaxies, we explain their non-Keplerian rotation curves (RCs) by means of a non-luminous component embedding their stellar-gaseous disks. Understanding the detailed properties of this component (labelled Dark Matter, DM) is one of the most pressing issues of Cosmology. We investigate the recent relationship (claimed by Walker et al. 2010, hereafter W + 10) between r, the galaxy radial coordinate, and Vh(r), the dark halo contribution to the circular velocity at r, 1) in the framework of the Universal Rotation Curve (URC) paradigm and directly 2) by means of the kinematics of a large sample of DM dominated spirals. We find a general agreement between the W + 10 claim, the distribution of DM emerging from the URC and that inferred in the (low luminosity) objects of our sample. We show that such a phenomenology, linking the spiral’s luminosity, radii and circular velocities, implies an evident inconsistency with (naive) predictions in the Λ Cold Dark Matter (ΛCDM) scenario. 展开更多

We create mock X-ray observations of hot gas in galaxy clusters with a new extension of the L-Galaxies semianalytic model of galaxy formation, which includes the radial distribution of hot gas in each halo.Based on the model outputs,we first build some mock light cones, then generate mock spectra with the SOXS package and derive the mock images in the light cones.Using the mock data,we simulate mock X-ray spectra for the ROSAT all-sky survey, and compare the mock spectra with the observational results. Then,we consider the design parameters of the HUBS mission and simulate the observation of the halo hot gas for HUBS as an important application of our mock work.We find:(1)our mock data match the observations by current X-ray telescopes.(2)The survey of hot baryons in resolved clusters by HUBS is effective below redshift 0.5,and the observations of the emission lines in point-like sources at z>0.5 by HUBS help us understand the hot baryons in the early universe.(3)By taking advantage of the large simulation box and flexibility in semi-analytic models, our mock X-ray observations provide the opportunity to select targets and observation strategies for forthcoming X-ray facilities. 展开更多

Article devoted to searching the parameters of dark matter halos on the base of dwarf galaxies’ dynamics (Messier 32 and Leo I). For doing this, we propose the new approach founded on construction the coupled elliptical trajectory for a probe body in the gravitational fields of Newtonian potential and potential of dark matter’s halo. This allows more accuracy estimate its central density for the Navarro-Frenk-White profile and free parameter for the Einasto profile . Our result is in good correlation with results of other authors that are got by different numerical methods. 展开更多

Environments play an important role in galaxy formation and evolution, particularly in regulating the content of neutral gas. However, current HI surveys have limitations in their depth, which prevents them from adequately studying low HI content galaxies in high-density regions. In this study,we address this issue by employing the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope with extensive integration times to complement the relatively shallow Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array HI survey. This approach allows us to explore the gas content of dwarf galaxies across various environments. We observe a positive relationship between HI mass and stellar mass in dwarf galaxies, with a well-defined upper boundary for HI mass that holds true in both observations and simulations.Furthermore,we find a decrease in the H I-to-stellar mass ratio(M_(HI)/M_*)as the density of the environment increases, irrespective of whether it is determined by the proximity to the nearest group or the projected number density.Comparing our observations to simulations,we note a steeper slope in the relationship, indicating a gradual gas-stripping process in the observational data.Additionally,we find that the scaling relation between the M_(HI)/M_*and optical properties can be improved by incorporating galaxy environments. 展开更多

Double radio lobes are generally believed to be produced by active nuclei of elliptical galaxies. However, several double-lobed radio sources have been solidly found to be associated with spiral galaxies.By cross-matching~9×105 spiral galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR8 data with the full 1.4 GHz radio source catalogs of NRAO VLA Sky Survey and Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimeters,we identify three new spiral galaxies:J0326-0623,J1110+0321 and J1134+3046 that produce double radio lobes, and five doublelobed spirals previously known.By combining the newly discovered and all the other known cases in literature,we confirm the relation that more massive spiral galaxies could produce more powerful radio lobes. We find that most of these spiral galaxies are located in a galaxy group or a poor cluster,in which the environment is denser than in the field, and about half of them are the central brightest galaxies in their parent system. We therefore suggest that the environment is one of the key factors for a spiral to produce double radio lobes. 展开更多

We conduct high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations using the MACER framework to investigate the interplay between the interstellar medium, active galactic nuclei(AGN)feedback and black hole(BH)feeding in a massive compact galaxy, with an emphasis on the impact of different central BH masses. We find that with a more massive central BH,high-speed outflows are more prominent, and the gas fraction in the compact galaxy is reduced.Due to the lower gas density and higher gas temperature, the compact galaxy with a more massive BH(MAS galaxy)remains predominantly single-phase with the cooling time t_(cool)■100t_(ff).In contrast, the compact galaxy with the reference BH mass(REF galaxy)maintains a higher gas fraction with a shorter cooling time, slightly more multiphase gas and less prominent outflows. We further demonstrate that the difference in gas thermal states and kinematics is caused by the stronger AGN feedback in the compact galaxy with a more massive BH,where the AGN wind power is twice as much as that with the reference BH.Since the AGN feedback efficiently suppresses the inflow rate and the BH feeding rate, the BH mass growth is significant in neither the compact galaxy with the reference BH nor that with the more massive BH,only by 24%and 11%of the initial BH mass, respectively, over the entire evolution time of 10 Gyr.We thus posit that without ex situ mass supply from mergers, the massive BHs in compact galaxies cannot grow significantly via gas accretion during the late phase, but might have already formed by the end of the rapid early phase of galaxy formation. 展开更多

Green Pea galaxies are compact galaxies with high star formation rates. However, limited samples of Green Pea galaxies have H I 21 cm measurements.Whether the H I gas fraction(fH I≡MH I/M_(★))of Green Pea galaxies follows the existing scaling relations between the fH Iand NUV-r color or linear combinations of color and other physical quantities needs checking.Using archival data of H I 21 cm observations,we investigate the scaling relation of the NUV-r color with the MH I/M_(★)of 38 Green Pea galaxies, including 17 detections and 21 nondetections. The H I to stellar mass ratios(fH I)of Green Pea galaxies deviate from the polynomial form, where a higher H I gas fraction is predicted given the current NUV-r color, even with the emission lines removed. The blue sources(NUV-r<1)from the comparison sample(ALFALFA-SDSS)follow a similar trend. The H I gas fraction scaling relations with linear combination forms of-0.34(N UV-r)-0.64 log(μ_(★,z))+5.9 and-0.77 log_(μ_(★)),i+0.26logS FRM_(★)+8.53,better predict the H I gas fraction of the Green Pea galaxies. In order to obtain accurate linear combined forms,higher-resolution photometry from space-based telescopes is needed. 展开更多

We use the recently discovered simple photometric parameter Central Intensity Ratio(CIR)determined for a sample of 57 nearby(z<0.02)Seyfert galaxies to explore the central features of galaxies and their possible connection with galaxy evolution. The sample of galaxies shows strong anti-correlation between CIR and mass of their central supermassive black holes(SMBHs).The SMBH masses of ellipticals are systematically higher for a given CIR value than those for lenticulars and spirals in the sample. However, the correlation between CIR and central velocity dispersion is weak.CIR appears less influenced by the excess flux produced by the central engine in these galaxies, when compared to spectroscopic parameters like velocity dispersion and OⅣflux, and proves to be a fast and reliable tool for estimating central SMBH mass. 展开更多

The observational data of high redshift galaxies become increasingly abundant, especially since the operation of the James Webb Space Telescope, which allows us to verify and optimize the galaxy formation model at high redshifts. In this work,we investigate the merging history of massive galaxies at 3<z<6 using a well-developed semi-analytic galaxy formation catalog. We find that the major merger rate increases with redshift up to 3 and then flattens. The fraction of wet mergers, during which the sum of the cold gas mass is higher than the sum of the stellar mass in two merging galaxies, also increases from~34%at z=0 to 96%at z=3.Interestingly,almost all major mergers are wet at z>3.This can be attributed to the high fraction(>50%)of cold gas at z>3.In addition,we study some special systems of massive merging galaxies at 3<z<6,including the massive gas-rich major merging systems and extreme dense proto-clusters,and investigate the supermassive black hole-dark matter halo mass relation and dual active galactic nuclei. We find that the galaxy formation model reproduces the incidence of those observed massive galaxies, but fails to reproduce the relation between the supermassive black hole mass and the dark matter halo mass at z~6.The latter requires more careful estimates of the supermassive black hole masses observationally.Otherwise,it could suggest modifications of the modeling of the supermassive black hole growth at high redshifts. 展开更多

In this paper we explore the formation of bars and present the bulge and bar properties and their correlations for a sample of lenticular barred(SB0)and lenticular unbarred(S0)galaxies in the central region of the Coma Cluster using HST/ACS data.In our sample,we identified bar features using the luminosity profile decomposition software GALFIT.We classified the bulges based on Sérsic index and Kormendy relation. We found that the average mass of the bulge in SB0 galaxies is 1.48×10^(10)M☉whereas the average mass of the bulge in S0 galaxies is 4.3×10^(10)M☉.We observe that SB0 galaxies show lower bulge concentration, low mass and also smaller B/T values compared to S0 galaxies.Using the Kormendy relation,we found that among the lenticular barred galaxies,82%have classical bulges and 18%have pseudo bulges. These classical bulges have low masses compared to the classical bulges of unbarred galaxies.S0,galaxies with massive classical bulges do not host bars.We also found that for all SB0s the bulge effective radius is less than the bar effective radius.SB0 galaxies with classical bulges suggest that the bar may have formed by mergers. 展开更多

We analyze how the column density of hydrogen atoms in the HⅠregions, observed in dark matter halos of a number of galaxies, can be determined.Specifically we study how the determination of the column density of hydrogen atoms from the observed astrophysical data would be affected by the possible presence of the Second Flavor of Hydrogen Atoms(SFHA),whose existence had been previously demonstrated in four different types of atomic experiments and had helped in explaining two puzzling astrophysical observations:the anomalous absorption in the 21 cm line from the early Universe and the smoother, less clumpy distribution of dark matter in the Universe than predicted by Einstein’s gravity.By a model example we demonstrate that the neglect of the SFHA leads to the overestimation of the column density of hydrogen atoms in dark matter halos by about 30%.We perform these relatively simple estimates just to get the message across and to motivate further corresponding theoretical and experimental studies. 展开更多

The second moment of the stellar velocity within the effective radius, denoted by σ^(2)_(e),is a crucial quantity in galaxy studies,as it provides insight into galaxy properties and their mass distributions. However, large spectroscopic surveys typically do not measure σ_(e) directly, instead providing σ_(aper),the second moment of the stellar velocity within a fixed fiber aperture. In this paper,we derive an empirical aperture correction formula, given byσ_(aper)/σ_(e)=(R_(aper)/R_(e))^(α),using spatially resolved stellar kinematics extracted from approximately 10,000 Sloan Digital Sky Survey-Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory integral field unit observations. Our analysis reveals a strong dependence ofαon the r-band absolute magnitude M_(r),g-i color, and Sérsic index nSer,whereαvalues are lower for brighter, redder galaxies with higher Sérsic indices. Our results demonstrate that the aperture correction derived from previous literature on early-type galaxies cannot be applied to predict the aperture corrections for galaxies with intermediate Sérsic indices. We provide a lookup table ofαvalues for different galaxy types, with parameters in the ranges of-18>M_(r)>-24,0.4<g-i<1.6,and 0<n_(Ser)<8.A Python script is provided to obtain the correction factors from the lookup table. 展开更多
