With the continuous improvement of permanent magnet(PM)wind generators'capacity and power density,the design of reasonable and efficient cooling structures has become a focus.This paper proposes a fully enclosed self-circulating hydrogen cooling structure for a originally forced-air-cooled direct-drive PM wind generator.The proposed hydrogen cooling system uses the rotor panel supports that hold the rotor core as the radial blades,and the hydrogen flow is driven by the rotating plates to flow through the axial and radial vents to realize the efficient cooling of the generator.According to the structural parameters of the cooling system,the Taguchi method is used to decouple the structural variables.The influence of the size of each cooling structure on the heat dissipation characteristic is analyzed,and the appropriate cooling structure scheme is determined. 展开更多

The electromagnetic characteristics and iron loss of a high-temperature superconductor wind generator(HWG)equipped with an overlapped field coil arrangement(OFCA)are studied by comparing with the one equipped with the conventional field coil arrangement(CFCA).Through a quantitative analysis,it was found that HWG with OFCA exhibits better electromagnetic characteristics than HWG with CFCA and can reduce the iron loss by eliminating the magnetic flux sag caused by the adjacent field coil sides with the same current flow direction.In addition,the OFCA topology can further reduce the volume of the wind generator. 展开更多

The wind energy generation,utilization and its grid penetration in electrical grid are increasing world-wide.The wind generated power is always fluctuating due to its time varying nature and causing stability problem.This weak interconnection of wind generating source in the electrical network affects the power quality and reliability.The localized energy storages shall compensate the fluctuating power and support to strengthen the wind generator in the power system.In this paper,it is proposed to control the voltage source inverter (VSI) in current control mode with energy storage,that is,batteries across the dc bus.The generated wind power can be extracted under varying wind speed and stored in the batteries.This energy storage maintains the stiff voltage across the dc bus of the voltage source inverter.The proposed scheme enhances the stability and reliability of the power system and maintains unity power factor.It can also be operated in stand-alone mode in the power system.The power exchange across the wind generation and the load under dynamic situation is feasible while maintaining the power quality norms at the common point of coupling.It strengthens the weak grid in the power system.This control strategy is evaluated on the test system under dynamic condition by using simulation.The results are verified by comparing the performance of controllers. 展开更多

The structure greatly improves the air gap sensitivity of the generator, which makes the structural design of the permanent magnet generator easier to implement. To analyze the factors which affecting transient stability of power system, the dynamic model of doubly-fed induction generator and direct-drive PM synchronous generator has been built using PSCAD. Impact of different wind farm integration on grid typically in China has been presented. The influence of the variations of transient reactance, negative sequence reactance and rotary inertia on critical clearing time of power system transient stability is analyzed by time-domain simulation. Mixture operation of DFIG and PMSG to optimize the stability of system has been analyzed firstly. The digital simulation results show that doubly-fed induction wind turbines is a better choice to meet the requirement of system instability due to large wind farm integration in comparison with direct-drive PM synchronous wind turbines. With a rather large rotary inertia, the proper ratio of direct-drive PM synchronous wind turbines used in wind farm could be comprehensive planning by optimized the stability of system. Analysis of this paper should be provided as academic reference for improving design of wind farm system. 展开更多

This paper presents a new operational strategy for a large-scale wind farm (WF) which is composed of both fixed speed wind turbines with squirrel cage induction generators (FSWT-SCIGs) and variable speed wind turbines with permanent magnet synchronous generators (VSWT-PMSGs). FSWT-SCIGs suffer greatly from meeting the requirements of fault ride through (FRT), because they are largely dependent on reactive power. Integration of flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) devices is a solution to overcome that problem, though it definitely increases the overall cost. Therefore, in this paper, a new method is proposed to stabilize FSWT-SCIGs by using VSWT-PMSGs in a WF. This is achieved by injecting the reactive power to the grid during fault condition by controlling the grid side converter (GSC) of PMSG. The conventional proportional-integral (PI)-based cascaded controller is usually used for GSC which can inject small amount of reactive power during fault period. Thus, it cannot stabilize larger rating of SCIG. In this paper, a suitable fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is proposed in the cascaded controller of GSC of PMSG in order to increase reactive power injection and thus improve the FRT capability of WF during voltage dip situation due to severe network fault. To evaluate the proposed controller performance, simulation analyses are performed on a modified IEEE nine-bus system. Simulation results clearly show that the proposed method can be a cost-effective solution which can effectively stabilize the larger rating of SCIG compared to conventional PI based control strategy. 展开更多

The magnetic flux in a permanent magnet transverse flux generator(PMTFG) is three-dimensional(3D), therefore, its efficacy is evaluated using 3D magnetic field analysis. Although the 3D finite-element method(FEM) is highly accurate and reliable for machine simulation, it requires a long computation time, which is crucial when it is to be used in an iterative optimization process. Therefore, an alternative to 3DFEM is required as a rapid and accurate analytical technique. This paper presents an analytical model for PMTFG analysis using winding function method. To obtain the air gap MMF distribution, the excitation magneto-motive force(MMF) and the turn function are determined based on certain assumptions. The magnetizing inductance, flux density, and back-electro-magnetomotive force of the winding are then determined. To assess the accuracy of the proposed method, the analytically calculated parameters of the generator are compared to those obtained by a 3D-FEM. The presented method requires significantly shorter computation time than the 3D-FEM with comparable accuracy. 展开更多

Timely inspection of defects on the surfaces of wind turbine blades can effectively prevent unpredictable accidents.To this end,this study proposes a semi-supervised object-detection network based on You Only Looking Once version 4(YOLOv4).A semi-supervised structure comprising a generative adversarial network(GAN)was designed to overcome the difficulty in obtaining sufficient samples and sample labeling.In a GAN,the generator is realized by an encoder-decoder network,where the backbone of the encoder is YOLOv4 and the decoder comprises inverse convolutional layers.Partial features from the generator are passed to the defect detection network.Deploying several unlabeled images can significantly improve the generalization and recognition capabilities of defect-detection models.The small-scale object detection capacity of the network can be improved by enhancing essential features in the feature map by adding the concurrent spatial and channel squeeze and excitation(scSE)attention module to the three parts of the YOLOv4 network.A balancing improvement was made to the loss function of YOLOv4 to overcome the imbalance problem of the defective species.The results for both the single-and multi-category defect datasets show that the improved model can make good use of the features of the unlabeled images.The accuracy of wind turbine blade defect detection also has a significant advantage over classical object detection algorithms,including faster R-CNN and DETR. 展开更多

This paper outlines a plan for the effective reduction of the audible sound level produced by aerodynamic noise from the power-generating turbine blades. The contribution of aerodynamic noise can be divided into two categories: inflow turbulence and airfoil self-noise. The base model and retrofit blade designs were modeled in SolidWorks. Subsequently, noise prediction simulations were conducted and compared to the base blade model to determine which modification provided the greatest benefit using SolidWorks Flow Simulation. The result of this project is a series of blade retrofit recommendations that produce a more acoustically efficient design and reduce noise complaints while enabling turbines to be placed in locations that require quieter operations. 展开更多

This paper reviews the status and progress of the investigation on power system small-signal angular stability as affected by grid-connected variable speed wind generators(VSWGs).The review is carried out on the basis of a survey of recently published representative papers.Strategies of the investigation made in those selected papers are classified into two groups:1)VSWGs displacing synchronous generators(SGs);2)VSWGs simply being added in a power system.The diversification of the results of the investigation is highlighted in the survey.Careful analysis on two strategies of the investigation is conducted in this paper.It is revealed that in the strategy of VSWGs displacing SGs,there are two factors which could affect power system small-signal angular stability differently:1)Withdrawing the SGs’dynamics;2)adding the VSWGs’dynamics.In the strategy of adding VSWGs in the power system,there are also two affecting factors:1)Change of load flow brought about by the VSWGs;2)dynamic interactions with the SGs introduced by the VSWGs.Hence diversified results of the investigation obtained so far are not only due to the dependence of the investigation on sample power systems used,but also caused by the mixture of different affecting factors.This paper is concluded with a summary of key issues of the investigation for future work. 展开更多

Recently, explanations of the sub-synchronous oscillation(SSO) caused by wind farms based on directdriven wind generators(DDWGs) have been published in the literatures, in which the controller parameters of DDWGs and the system equivalent parameters play an important role. However, more than one set of parameters can cause weakly damped sub-synchronous modes. The most vulnerable and highly possible scenario is still unknown. To find scenarios that have potential oscillation risks, this paper proposes a small disturbance model of wind farms with DDWGs connected to the grid using a state-space modeling technique. Taguchi’s orthogonal array testing is introduced to generate different scenarios.Multiple scenarios with different parameter settings that may lead to SSOs are found. A probabilistic analysis method based on the Gaussian mixture model is employed to evaluate the consistency of these scenarios with the actual accidents. Synchronous generators are important components of power systems and are necessary to maintain its normal and stable operation.To perform the fault diagnosis of mild inter-turn short circuit in the excitation winding of a synchronous generator,a gate recurrent unit-convolutional neural network(GRU-CNN)model whose structural parameters were determined by improved particle swarm optimization(IPSO)is proposed.The outputs of the model are the excitation current and reactive power.The total offset distance,which is the fusion of the offset distance of the excitation current and offset distance of the reactive power,was selected as the fault judgment criterion.The fusion weights of the excitation current and reactive power were determined using the anti-entropy weighting method.The fault-warning threshold and fault-warning ratio were set according to the normal total offset distance,and the fault warning time was set according to the actual situation.The fault-warning time and fault-warning ratio were used to avoid misdiagnosis.The proposed method was verified experimentally. 展开更多

The present study was carried out in order to track the maximum power point in a variable speed turbine by minimizing electromechanical torque changes using a sliding mode control strategy. In this strategy, first, the rotor speed is set at an optimal point for different wind speeds. As a result of which, the tip speed ratio reaches an optimal point, mechanical power coefficient is maximized, and wind turbine produces its maximum power and mechanical torque. Then, the maximum mechanical torque is tracked using electromechanical torque. In this technique, tracking error integral of maximum mechanical torque, the error, and the derivative of error are used as state variables. During changes in wind speed, sliding mode control is designed to absorb the maximum energy from the wind and minimize the response time of maximum power point tracking(MPPT). In this method, the actual control input signal is formed from a second order integral operation of the original sliding mode control input signal. The result of the second order integral in this model includes control signal integrity, full chattering attenuation, and prevention from large fluctuations in the power generator output. The simulation results, calculated by using MATLAB/m-file software, have shown the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy for wind energy systems based on the permanent magnet synchronous generator(PMSG). 展开更多

This paper gives performance analysis of a three phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) connected to a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT). Low speed wind condition (less than 5 m/s) is taken in consideration and the entire simulation is carried in Matlab/Simulink environment. The rated power for the generator is fixed at 1.5 KW and number of pole at 20. It is observed under low wind speed of6 m/s, a turbine having approximately1 mof radius and2.6 mof height develops 150 Nm mechanical torque that can generate power up to 1.5 KW. The generator is designed using modeling tool and is fabricated. The fabricated generator is tested in the laboratory with the simulation result for the error analysis. The range of error is about 5%-27% for the same output power value. The limitations and possible causes for error are presented and discussed. 展开更多
