Excavation under complex geological conditions requires effective and accurate geological forward-prospecting to detect the unfavorable geological structure and estimate the classification of surround-ing rock in front of the tunnel face.In this work,a forward-prediction method for tunnel geology and classification of surrounding rock is developed based on seismic wave velocity layered tomography. In particular, for the problem of strong multi-solution of wave velocity inversion caused by few ray paths in the narrow space of the tunnel,a layered inversion based on regularization is proposed.By reducing the inversion area of each iteration step and applying straight-line interface assumption, the convergence and accuracy of wave velocity inversion are effectively improved.Furthermore,a surrounding rock classification network based on autoencoder is constructed. The mapping relationship between wave velocity and classification of surrounding rock is established with density,Poisson’s ratio and elastic modulus as links. Two numerical examples with geological conditions similar to that in the field tunnel and a field case study in an urban subway tunnel verify the potential of the proposed method for practical application. 展开更多

The nonlinear Baker failure criterion is introduced into the upper-bound limit analysis to examine the face stability of a shallow tunnel. The tunnel face under the ultimate limit state is analyzed from the perspective of energy balance. The work rates of external forces and internal energy dissipation are calculated. An analytical solution of necessary face pressures is derived. The optimal upper-bound solution of the face pressures is obtained by optimization. The results show that the three dimensionless parameters A, T, n of nonlinear Baker failure criterion have different effects on the necessary face pressures and the pattern failure mechanisms ahead of tunnel face. A is the most important one;n takes the second place, and T is the least one. The computed necessary face pressures are nonlinearly increasing when A is reduced. Combined with the actual monitoring data of Taxia tunnel, the calculation results in this paper is verified. It is suggested that the tunnel face supports should be strengthened timely in soft rocks to prevent the occurrence of face collapse. 展开更多

Based on the geological condition of Zhangxiaolou deep mine in Xuzhou mining area, under 986 m in depth, 20.6-31.6 MPa in maximum horizontal principal stress, and friable and fractured surrounding rock, test researches on partial relieving pressure were completed for the entry with U-steel arched yielding support. The relieving pressure parameters, technology process and results of springing blasting by boreholes and excavating pockets in the two sides of entry were introduced. It is demonstrated that springing will not be shaped under the condition of single borehole arrangement after exploded, the arrangement by a group, it will make borehole bottom form springing in 0.6-0.8 m in diameter, that convergence of two sides and roof to floor have some increments by using springing blasting for reliving pressure. This kind of method for reliving pressure is not suitable to use in the deep mine, and that the convergence of two sides obviously declined by excavating pocket in two sides, it can be still used in the entry with metal support, while maintenance of entry in deep mines is difficult, and can not be supported by bolt or bolt with wire mesh. 展开更多

On-site investigations consistently show that the rock burst inherent to coal seams varies greatly with coal seam thickness. In this study, impact factors related to coal seam thickness and surrounding rock strength were analyzed and a corresponding rock burst risk assessment method was constructed. The model reflects the influence of coal seam thickness on the stress distribution of surrounding rock at the roadway.Based on the roadway excavation range,a stress distribution model of surrounding roadway rock is established and the influence of coal seam thickness on rock burst risk is analyzed accordingly. The proposed rock burst risk assessment method is based on the equivalent surrounding rock strength and coal seam bursting liability. The proposed method was tested in a 3500 mining area to find that it yields rock burst risk assessment results as per coal seam thickness that are in accordance with real-world conditions. The results presented here suggest that coal seam thickness is a crucial factor in effective rock burst risk assessment. 展开更多

The formation mechanism of surrounding rock pressure in large-section tunnels of underground excavation is still unclear. The traditional methods for calculating surrounding rock pressure have certain limitations. Based on the theory of pressure arch and parameter sensitivity analysis, the internal and external boundaries of the pressure arch are solved by numerical simulation. The loose pressure is obtained according to the distance from the inner boundary to the inner wall of the tunnel. The pressure arch deformation is analyzed based on the Winkler model. The surrounding rock pressure is calculated, and the surrounding rock pressure based on the pressure arch theory is calculated. The calculation method of surrounding rock pressure based on the pressure arch theory large section tunnel is proposed. The orthogonal experimental design method was used to select four representative factors: tunnel depth H, span B, internal friction angle φ and rock weight γ. The calculation results of each group of experiments were compiled and multivariate linear regression was used. The method is statistically analyzed, and finally, the calculation formula of the surrounding rock pressure of the large-section tunnel affected by multiple factors is obtained and applied to the calculation of the surrounding rock pressure of the metro station. 展开更多

In order to investigate the influence of complex conditions of in-situ surrounding rocks on the settlement behavior of nubbly coal mine waste subjected to high gravity pressure, four kinds of loading chambers made of different similar materials with different elastic moduli in experiments were used to simulate the deformation features of in-site rocks, including soft, moderate hardness, hard and extra-hard rocks. The results show that all the settlement-axial load (or axial strain-stress) curves obtained under four different surrounding rock conditions present power-exponential function feature. The final settlement of coal mine waste under the same axial load is closely related to the lumpiness gradations and the deformation behavior of chamber materials used to simulate behaviors of different in-situ surrounding rocks. In the same surrounding rock condition, the final settlement under the same maximum axial load decreases with the decrease of the proportion of larger gradation of coal mine waste. While for the same lumpiness gradation case, the settlement increases with the decrease of elastic modulus of simulated surrounding rocks and the lateral pressure induced by axial load increases with the increase of elastic modulus of loading chambers that are used to simulate different surrounding rocks. The test results also reveal that both the compaction curve and lateral pressure curve show a three-stage behavior, and the duration of each stage, which is closely related to gradations and the deformation feature of loading chamber materials, decreases with the increase of the proportion of the small size of coal mine waste and elastic modulus of the simulated rock materials. 展开更多

Moraines, characterized by the accumulation of rock and soil debris transported by glacial activity, present unique challenges for tunnel construction, particularly in portal sections, due to prevailing geographical and climatic conditions that facilitate freeze-thaw action.Despite these challenges, there is a dearth of studies investigating the influence of freeze-thaw action and water content on the mechanical properties of moraines, and no research on calculating surrounding rock pressure in moraine tunnels subjected to freeze-thaw conditions. In this study, direct shear tests under freeze-thaw cycles were conducted to examine the effects of freeze-thaw cycles and water content on the mechanical properties of frozen moraine.A comprehensive parameter K,integrating the number of freeze-thaws and water content, was introduced to model cohesion c.Drawing on Terzaghi Theory,we propose an improved algorithm for calculating surrounding rock pressure at the portal section of moraine tunnels.Using a tunnel as a case study, surrounding rock pressure was calculated under various conditions to validate the Improved Algorithm's efficacy. The results show that:(1)Strength loss exhibits a linear trend with the number of freeze-thaw cycles at water content levels of 4%and 8%,while at 12%water content, previous freeze-thaw cycles induce more significant damage to the soil.(2)Moraine saturation peaks between 8%and 12%water content.Following repeated freeze-thaw cycles, moraine shear strength initially increases before decreasing with varying water content.(3)The internal friction angle of moraine experiences slight reductions with prolonged freeze-thaw cycles, but both freeze-thaw cycles and water content significantly influence cohesion.(4)Vertical surrounding rock pressure increases after the initial freeze-thaw cycle, particularly with higher water content, although freeze-thaw cycles have minimal effect on it.(5)Freeze-thaw cycles lead to a substantial increase in lateral surrounding rock pressure, necessitating reinforced support structures at the arch wall, arch waist, and arch foot in engineering projects to mitigate freeze-thaw effects. This study provides a foundation for designing and selecting tunnel support structures in similar geological conditions. 展开更多

Taking the return air roadway of Tashan 8204 isolated island working face as the background, the evolution law of the stress field in the surrounding rock of the widened coal pillar area roadway during the mining period of the isolated island working face is obtained through numerical simulation. The hazardous area of strong mine pressure under different coal pillar widths is determined. Through simulation, it is known that when the width of the coal pillar is less than 20 m, there is large bearing capacity on the coal side of the roadway entity. The force on the side of the coal pillar is relatively small. When the width of the coal pillar ranges from 25 m to 45 m, the vertical stress on the roadway and surrounding areas is relatively high. Pressure relief measures need to be taken during mining to reduce surrounding rock stress. When the width of the coal pillar is greater than 45 m, the peak stress of the coal pillar is located in the deep part of the surrounding rock, but it still has a certain impact on the roadway. It is necessary to take pressure relief measures to transfer the stress to a deeper depth to ensure the stability of the triangular coal pillar during the safe mining period of the working face. This provides guidance for ensuring the stability of the triangular coal pillar during the safe mining period of the working face. 展开更多

Gas breakthrough pressure is a key parameter to evaluate the sealing capacity of caprock, and it also plays important roles in safety and capacity of CO_(2)geological storage.Based on the published experimental results,we present numerical simulations on CO_(2)breakthrough pressure in unsaturated low-permeability rock under 9 multiple P-T conditions(which can keep CO_(2)in gaseous, liquid and supercritical states)and thus,a numerical method which can be used to accurately predict CO_(2)breakthrough pressure on rock-core scale is proposed. The simulation results show that CO_(2)breakthrough pressure and breakthrough time are exponential correlated with P-T conditions.Meanwhile, pressure has stronger effects on experimental results than that of temperature. Moreover,we performed sensitivity studies on the pore distribution indexλ(0.6,0.7,0.8,and 0.9)in van Genuchten-Muale model. Results show that with the increase ofλ,CO_(2)breakthrough pressure and breakthrough time both show decreasing trends. In other words, the larger the value ofλis,the better the permeability of the caprock is,and the worse the CO_(2)sealing capacity is.The numerical method established in this study can provide an important reference for the prediction of gas breakthrough pressure on rock-core scale and for related numerical studies. 展开更多

This paper puts forward using high-pressure water jet technology to control rock burst in roadway, and analyzes the theory of controlling rock burst in roadway by the weak structure zone model. The weak structure zone is formed by using high-pressure water jet to cut the coal wall in a continuous and rotational way. In order to study the influence law of weak structure zone in surrounding rock, this paper numerically analyzed the influence law of weak structure zone, and the disturbance law of coal wall and floor under dynamic and static combined load. The results show that when the distance between high-pressure water jet drillings is 3 m and the diameter of drilling is 300 mm, continuous stress superposition zone can be formed. The weak structure zone can transfer and reduce the concentrated static load in surrounding rock, and then form distressed zone. The longer the high-pressure water jet drilling is, the larger the distressed zone is. The stress change and displacement change of non-distressed zone in coal wall and floor are significantly greater than that of distressed zone under dynamic and static combined load. And it shows that the distressed zone can effectively control rock burst in roadway under dynamic and static combined load. High-pressure water jet technology was applied in the haulage gate of 250203 working face in Yanbei Coal Mine, and had gained good effect. The study conclusions provide theoretical foundation and a new guidance for controlling rock burst in roadway. 展开更多

In order to analyze the mechanism of deep hole high pressure hydraulic fracturing, nonlinear dynamic theory, damage mechanics, elastic-plastic mechanics are used, and the law of crack propagation and stress transfer under two deep hole hydraulic fracturing in tectonic stress areas is studied using seepage-stress coupling models with RFPA simulation software. In addition, the effects of rock burst control are tested using multiple methods, either in the stress field or in the energy field. The research findings show that with two deep holes hydraulic fracturing in tectonic stress areas, the direction of the main crack propagation under shear-tensile stress is parallel to the greatest principal stress direction. High-pressure hydraulic fracturing water seepage can result in the destruction of the coal structure, while also weakening the physical and mechanical properties of coal and rock. Therefore the impact of high stress concentration in hazardous areas will level off, which has an effect on rock burst prevention and control in the region. 展开更多

For a deeper understanding of the deformation failure behavior of jointed rock, numerical compression simulations are carried out on a rock specimen containing non-persistent joints under confining pressure with the bondedparticle model. The microscopic parameters which can reflect the macroscopic mechanical properties and failure behavior of artificial jointed specimens are firstly calibrated. Then, the influence of joint inclination and confining pressure on stress-strain curves, crack patterns, and contact force distributions of jointed rock are investigated. The simulation results show that both the compressive strength and elastic modulus of the specimens increase with increasing confining pressure, and these two mechanical parameters decrease first and then increase with the increase of joints inclination. The sensitivity of strength and elastic modulus to confining pressure is not the same in different joints inclinations, which has the least impact on specimens with α=90°. Under low confining pressure, the failure modes are controlled by the joint inclination. As the confining pressure increased, the initiation and propagation of tensile crack are gradually inhibited, and the failure mode is transferred from tensile failure to shear-compression failure. Finally, the reinforcement effect of prestressed bolt support on engineering fractured rock mass is discussed. 展开更多

Rock mass dynamics disasters caused by excavations and mining occur frequently in deep mines. In order to establish a theoretical system and control technologies for such disasters,we first classify and define dynamic disasters, such as rock bursts, coal bursts, mine pressure bumps, and mine earthquakes.According to the occurrence mechanism of different types of dynamic disasters,we establish a compensation control theory based on excavation and mining effects. On the basis,we propose three key technologies:high prestress compensation technology for the roadway, pressure relief technology using directional roof cutting, and the goaf filling technology using broken rock dilation. These three technologies constitute the compensation control method for dynamic disasters in deep mines. Finally, this method was successfully applied in a deep coal mine with high stress, with monitored results suggesting its rationality. This work provides a new concept and control method for the prevention of rock dynamic disasters in deep mines. 展开更多

Influence of confining pressure from 0 to 28 MPa, which acts on the two lateral edges of rock specimen in plane strain compression, on the shear failure processes and patterns as well as on the macroscopically mechanical responses were numerically modeled by use of FLAC. A material imperfection with lower strength in comparison with the intact rock, which is close to the lower-left corner of the specimen, was prescribed. In elastic stage, the adopted constitutive relation of rock was linear elastic; in strain-softening stage, a composite Mohr-Coulomb criterion with tension cut-off and a post-peak linear constitutive relation were adopted. The numerical results show that with an increase of confining pressure the peak strength of axial stress-axial strain curve and the corresponding axial strain linearly increase; the residual strength and the stress drop from the peak strength to the residual strength increase; the failure modes of rock transform form the multiple shear bands close to the loading end of the specimen (confining pressure=0-0.1 MPa), to the conjugate shear bands (0.5-2.0 MPa), and then to the single shear band (4-28 MPa). Once the tip of the band reaches the loading end of the specimen, the direction of the band changes so that the reflection of the band occurs. At higher confining pressure, the new-formed shear band does not intersect the imperfection, bringing extreme difficulties in prediction of the failure of rock structure, such as rock burst. The present results enhance the understanding of the shear failure processes and patterns of rock specimen in higher confining pressure and higher loading strain rate. 展开更多

Using an MTS 815 testing machine, the deformation and failure behavior of a rock-coal-rock combined body containing a weak coal interlayer has been investigated and described in this paper.Uniaxial loading leads to the appearance of mixed cracks in the coal body which induce instability and lead to bursts in coal.If the mixed crack propagates at a sufficiently high speed to carry enough energy to damage the roof rock, then coal and rock bursts may occur-this is the main mechanism whereby coal bumps or coal and rock bursts occur after excavation unloading. With increasing confining pressure, the failure strength of a rock-coal-rock combined body gradually increases, and the failure mechanism of the coal interlayer also changes, from mixed crack damage under low confining pressures,to parallel crack damage under medium confining pressures, and finally to single shear crack damage or integral mixed section damage under high confining pressures. In general,it is shown that a weak coal interlayer changes the form of overall coal damage in a rock-coal-rock combined body and reduces the overall stability of a coal body. Therefore, the whole failure behavior of a rock-coal-rock combined body in large cutting height working faces is controlled by these mechanisms. 展开更多

Following tunnel excavation and lining completion, fractured surrounding rock deforms gradually over time;this results in a time-dependent evolution of the pressure applied to the lining structure by the surrounding rock. Thus, the safety of the tunnel lining in weak strata is strongly correlated with time.In this study,we developed an analytical method for determining the time-dependent pressure in the surrounding rock and lining structure of a circular tunnel under a hydrostatic stress field.Under the proposed method, the stress–strain relationship of the fractured surrounding rock is assumed to conform to that of the Burgers viscoelastic component, and the lining structure is assumed to be an elastomer.Based on these assumptions, the viscoelastic deformation of the surrounding rock, the elastic deformation of the lining structure, and the coordinated deformation between the surrounding rock and lining structure were derived. The proposed analytical method, which employs a time-dependent safety coefficient, was subsequently used to estimate the durability of the lining structure of the Foling Tunnel in China. The derived attenuation curve of the safety coefficient with respect to time can assist engineers in predicting the remaining viable life of the lining structure.Unlike existing analytical methods, the method derived in this study considers the time dependency of the interaction between the surrounding rock and tunnel lining;hence,it is more suitable for the evaluation of lining lifetime. 展开更多
