In order to quantify the contribution of the mitigation strategies,an extended Kaya identity has been proposed in this paper for decomposing the various factors that influence the CO2 emission. To this end,we provided a detailed decomposition of the carbon intensity and energy intensity, which enables the quantification of clean energy development and electrification. The logarithmic mean divisia index(LMDI)has been applied to the historical data to quantify the contributions of the various factors affecting the CO2 emissions.Further, the global energy interconnection(GEI)scenario has been introduced for providing a systematic solution to meet the 2℃goal of the Paris Agreement.By combining LMDI with the scenario analysis, the mitigation potential of the various factors for CO2 emission has been analyzed. Results from the historical data indicate that economic development and population growth contribute the most to the increase in CO2 emissions, whereas improvement in the power generation efficiency predominantly helps in emission reduction.A numerical analysis, performed for obtaining the projected future carbon emissions, suggests that clean energy development and electrification are the top two factors that can decrease CO2 emissions, thus showing their great potential for mitigation in the future. Moreover, the carbon capture and storage technology serves as an important supplementary mitigation method. 展开更多

The renewable energy industry has grown its contribution to the global energy mix, particularly in terms of electricity generation. This study investigates the implications of an increasing renewable energy share on OAPEC countries and proposes a comprehensible policy strategy for the region. Four main topics are discussed: scientific and engineering principles of renewable energy utilization, current strategies for electricity generation in each OAPEC member country, economic and environmental implications of the energy transition under two future scenarios, as well as political interactions between oil-consuming and oil-producing countries. Based on this study, realistic and cost-effective strategies are proposed for OAPEC countries to better leverage their significant renewable energy resources while stabilizing fossil fuel supplies and strengthening their position in the global energy market. To mitigate the negative impacts of the energy transition, OAPEC countries are encouraged to take the following steps: 1) Developing renewable energy in conjunction with fossil fuel resources to reduce local demand for fossil fuel and increase the supply for exportation;2) Reviewing economic policies, environmental regulations, and carbon taxes imposed by oil-consuming countries;3) Increasing investment in renewable energy infrastructure;4) Cooperating to achieve a balance between economic development and environmental protection. 展开更多

With the rapid development of technologies such as big data and cloud computing, data communication and data computing in the form of exponential growth have led to a large amount of energy consumption in data centers.Globally, data centers will become the world’s largest users of energy consumption, with the ratio rising from 3%in 2017 to 4.5%in 2025.Due to its unique climate and energy-saving advantages, the high-latitude area in the Pan-Arctic region has gradually become a hotspot for data center site selection in recent years. In order to predict and analyze the future energy consumption and carbon emissions of global data centers, this paper presents a new method based on global data center traffic and power usage effectiveness(PUE)for energy consumption prediction.Firstly, global data center traffic growth is predicted based on the Cisco’s research.Secondly, the dynamic global average PUE and the high latitude PUE based on Romonet simulation model are obtained, and then global data center energy consumption with two different scenarios, the decentralized scenario and the centralized scenario,is analyzed quantitatively via the polynomial fitting method. The simulation results show that,in 2030,the global data center energy consumption and carbon emissions are reduced by about 301 billion kWh and 720 million tons CO2 in the centralized scenario compared with that of the decentralized scenario, which confirms that the establishment of data centers in the Pan-Arctic region in the future can effectively relief the climate change and energy problems. This study provides support for global energy consumption prediction, and guidance for the layout of future global data centers from the perspective of energy consumption. Moreover,it provides support of the feasibility of the integration of energy and information networks under the Global Energy Interconnection conception. 展开更多

In this paper, we present a novel region-based active contour model based on global in-tensity fitting energy in a variational level set framework. Meanwhile, an internal energy term is in-troduced, and it forces the level set function to be close to a signed distance function. Image global information utilized efficiently makes the proposed model insensitive to noise, and the introduced penalty term can avoid the costly re-initialization for the evolving level set function, which not only speeds up the contour evolvement, but also improves accuracy of the final contour. Comparisons with other classical region-based models, such as Chan-Vese model and Region-Scalable Fitting (RSF) model, show the advantages of our model in terms of efficiency and accuracy. Moreover, the model is robust to noise. 展开更多

Under the background of energy crisis, the development of renewable energy will significantly alleviate the energy and environmental crisis. On the basis of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ECMWF)interim reanalysis(ERA-interim) wind data, the annual and seasonal grade divisions of the global offshore wind energy are investigated. The results show that the annual mean offshore wind energy has great potential. The wind energy over the westerly oceans of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres is graded as Class 7(the highest), whereas that over most of the mid-low latitude oceans are higher than Class 4. The wind energy over the Arctic Ocean(Class 4) is more optimistic than the traditional evaluations. Seasonally, the westerly oceans of the Northern Hemisphere with a Class 7 wind energy are found to be largest in January, followed by April and October, and smallest in July. The area of the Class 7 wind energy over the westerly oceans of the Southern Hemisphere are found to be largest in July and slightly smaller in the other months. In July, the wind energy over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal is graded as Class 7, which is obviously richer than that in other months. It is shown that in this data set in April and October, the majority of the northern Indian Ocean are regions of indigent wind energy resource. 展开更多

Based on an attribution analysis of the global mean temperature biases in the Flexible Global Ocean- AtmOsphere-Land System model, spectral version 2 (FGOALS-s2) through a coupled atmosphere-surface ch- mate feedback-response analysis method (CFRAM), the model's global surface-atmosphere energy balance in boreal winter and summer is examined. Within the en- ergy-balance-based CFRAM system, the model temperature biases are attributed to energy perturbations resulting from model biases in individual radiative and non-radia- tive processes in the atmosphere and at the surface. The results show that, although the global mean surface tem- perature (Ts) bias is only 0.38 K in January and 1.70 K in July, and the atmospheric temperature (Ta) biases from the troposphere to the stratosphere are only around +3 K at most, the temperature biases due to model biases in rep- resenting the individual radiative and non-radiative proc- esses are considerably large (over -4-10 K at most). Spe- cifically, the global cold radiative Ts bias, mainly due to the overestimated surface albedo, is compensated for by the global warm non-radiative Ts bias that is mainly due to the overestimated downward surface heat fluxes. The model biases in non-radiative processes in the lower tro- posphere (up to 5-15 K) are relatively much larger than in upper levels, which are mainly responsible for the warm Ta biases there. In contrast, the global mean cold ira biases in the mid-to-upper troposphere are mainly dominated by radiative processes. The warm/cold Ta biases in the lower/upper stratosphere are dominated by non-radiative processes, while the warm ira biases in the mid-strato- sphere can be attributed to the radiative ozone feedback process. 展开更多

The three-dimensional nonlinear quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity equation is reduced to a linear form in the stream function in spherical coordinates for the permanent wave solutions consisting of zonal wavenumbers from 0 to n and rn vertical components with a given degree n.This equation is solved by treating the coefficient of the Coriolis parameter square in the equation as the eigenvalue both for sinusoidal and hyperbolic variations in vertical direction. It is found that these solutions can represent the observed long term flow patterns at the surface and aloft over the globe closely. In addition, the sinusoidal vertical solutions with large eigenvalue G are trapped in low latitude, and the scales of these trapped modes are longer than 10 deg. lat. even for the top layer of the ocean and hence they are much larger than that given by the equatorial β-plane solutions. Therefore such baroclinic disturbances in the ocean can easily interact with those in the atmosphere.Solutions of the shallow water potential vorticity equation are treated in a similar manner but with the effective depth H=RT/g taken as limited within a small range for the atmosphere. The propagation of the flow energy of the wave packet consisting of more than one degree is found to be along the great circle around the globe both for barotropic and for baroclinic flows in the atmosphere. 展开更多

In recent years, renewable energy technologies have been developed vigorously, and related supporting policies have been issued. The developmental trend of different energy sources directly affects the future developmental pattern of the energy and power industry.Energy trend research can be quantified through data statistics and model calculations;however, parameter settings and optimization are difficult, and the analysis results sometimes do not reflect objective reality. This paper proposes an energy and power information analysis method based on emotion mining. This method collects energy commentary news and literature reports from many authoritative media around the world and builds a convolutional neural network model and a text analysis model for topic classification and positive/negative emotion evaluation, which helps obtain text evaluation matrixes for all collected texts. Finally,a long-short-term memory model algorithm is employed to predict the future development prospects and market trends for various types of energy based on the analyzed emotions in different time spans.Experimental results indicate that energy trend analysis based on this method is consistent with the real scenario, has good applicability, and can provide a useful reference for the development of energy and power resources and of other industry areas as well. 展开更多

There has been an intense discussion on the energy infrastructure cooperation in Northeast Asia. Most studies have focused on the technical feasibility of grid interconnection, deployment of renewable energy, and have ignored the quantitative analysis of social and economic benefits of these proposals. This study uses a computable general equilibrium model to evaluate the effects of energy interconnection in Northeast Asia.Key model development tasks include 1)constructing a new nesting structure,2)econometrically estimating the constant elasticities of substitution(CES)between fossil-and non-fossil-power generation bundles,3)developing a new base-case scenario, and 4)developing the policy scenario. We found that while Northeast Asia will benefit from energy interconnection development with higher GDP than in the base-case;there will be a trade-off between higher investment and lower consumption.Sector results and environmental implications in this region are also discussed. 展开更多

The performance of a z-level ocean model, the Modular Ocean Model Version 4(MOM4), is evaluated in terms of simulating the global tide with different horizontal resolutions commonly used by climate models. The performance using various sets of model topography is evaluated. The results show that the optimum filter radius can improve the simulated co-tidal phase and that better topography quality can lead to smaller rootmean square(RMS) error in simulated tides. Sensitivity experiments are conducted to test the impact of spatial resolutions. It is shown that the model results are sensitive to horizontal resolutions. The calculated absolute mean errors of the co-tidal phase show that simulations with horizontal resolutions of 0.5° and 0.25° have about 35.5% higher performance compared that with 1° model resolution. An internal tide drag parameterization is adopted to reduce large system errors in the tidal amplitude. The RMS error of the best tuned 0.25° model compared with the satellite-altimetry-constrained model TPXO7.2 is 8.5 cm for M_2. The tidal energy fluxes of M_2 and K_1 are calculated and their patterns are in good agreement with those from the TPXO7.2. The correlation coefficients of the tidal energy fluxes can be used as an important index to evaluate a model skill. 展开更多
