Natural fibers have been extensively researched as reinforcement materials in polymers on account of their environmental and economic advantages in comparison with synthetic fibers in the recent years.Bamboo fibers are renowned for their good mechanical properties, abundance, and short cycle growth. As beams are one of the fundamental structural components and are susceptible to mechanical loads in engineering applications, this paper performs a study on the free vibration and buckling responses of bamboo fiber reinforced composite(BFRC)beams on the elastic foundation.Three different functionally graded(FG)layouts and a uniform one are the considered distributions for unidirectional long bamboo fibers across the thickness. The elastic properties of the composite are determined with the law of mixture.Employing Hamilton’s principle, the governing equations of motion are obtained. The generalized differential quadrature method(GDQM)is then applied to the equations to obtain the results. The achieved outcomes exhibit that the natural frequency and buckling load values vary as the fiber volume fractions and distributions, elastic foundation stiffness values, and boundary conditions(BCs)and slenderness ratio of the beam change.Furthermore,a comparative study is conducted between the derived analysis outcomes for BFRC and homogenous polymer beams to examine the effectiveness of bamboo fibers as reinforcement materials, demonstrating the significant enhancements in both vibration and buckling responses, with the exception of natural frequencies for cantilever beams on the Pasternak foundation with the FG-◇fiber distribution.Eventually, the obtained analysis results of BFRC beams are also compared with those for carbon nanotube reinforced composite(CNTRC)beams found in the literature, indicating that the buckling loads and natural frequencies of BFRC beams are lower than those of CNTRC beams. 展开更多

A three-dimensional(3D)thermomechanical vibration model is developed for rotating pre-twisted functionally graded(FG)microbeams according to the refined shear deformation theory(RSDT)and the modified couple stress theory(MCST).The material properties are assumed to follow a power-law distribution along the chordwise direction. The model introduces one axial stretching variable and four transverse deflection variables including two pure bending components and two pure shear ones. The complex modal analysis and assumed mode methods are used to solve the governing equations of motion under different boundary conditions(BCs).Several examples are presented to verify the effectiveness of the developed model.By coupling the slenderness ratio, gradient index, rotation speed, and size effect with the pre-twisted angle, the effects of these factors on the thermomechanical vibration of the microbeam with different BCs are investigated. It is found that with the increase in the pre-twisted angle, the critical slenderness ratio and gradient index corresponding to the thermal instability of the microbeam increase, while the critical material length scale parameter(MLSP)and rotation speed decrease. The sensitivity of the fundamental frequency to temperature increases with the increasing slenderness ratio and gradient index, and decreases with the other increasing parameters. Moreover, the size effect can suppress the dynamic stiffening effect and enhance the Coriolis effect. Finally, the mode transition is quantitatively demonstrated by a modal assurance criterion(MAC). 展开更多

This study investigates the vibration and acoustic properties of porous foam functionally graded(FG)plates under the influence of the temperature field. The dynamics equations of the system are established based on Hamilton's principle by using the higher-order shear deformation theory under the linear displacement-strain assumption. The displacement shape function is assumed according to the four-sided simply-supported(SSSS)boundary condition, and the characteristic equations of the system are derived by combining the motion control equations. The theoretical model of vibro-acoustic coupling is established by using the acoustic theory and fluid-structure coupling solution method under the simple harmonic acoustic wave. The system's natural frequency and sound transmission loss(STL)are obtained through programming calculations and compared with the literature and COMSOL simulation to verify the validity and reliability of the theoretical model. The effects of various factors, such as temperature, porosity coefficients, gradient index, core thickness,width-to-thickness ratio on the vibration, and STL characteristics of the system, are discussed. The results provide a theoretical basis for the application of porous foam FG plates in engineering to optimize vibration and sound transmission properties. 展开更多

A quasi-three dimensional model is proposed for the vibration analysis of functionally graded(FG)micro-beams with general boundary conditions based on the modified strain gradient theory. To consider the effects of transverse shear and nor-mal deformations,a general displacement field is achieved by relaxing the assumption of the constant transverse displacement through the thickness. The conventional beam theories including the classical beam theory, the first-order beam theory, and the higher-order beam theory are regarded as the special cases of this model. The material proper-ties changing gradually along the thickness direction are calculated by the Mori-Tanaka scheme. The energy-based formulation is derived by a variational method integrated with the penalty function method, where the Chebyshev orthogonal polynomials are used as the basis function of the displacement variables. The formulation is validated by some comparative examples, and then the parametric studies are conducted to investigate the effects of transverse shear and normal deformations on vibration behaviors. 展开更多

This paper focuses on the buckling behaviors of a micro-scaled bi-directional functionally graded (FG) beam with a rectangular cross-section, which is now widely used in fabricating components of micro-nano-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) with a wide range of aspect ratios. Based on the modified couple stress theory and the principle of minimum potential energy, the governing equations and boundary conditions for a micro-structure-dependent beam theory are derived. The present beam theory incorporates different kinds of higher-order shear assumptions as well as the two familiar beam theories, namely, the Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories. A numerical solu- tion procedure, based on a generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM), is used to calculate the results of the bi-directional FG beams. The effects of the two exponential FG indexes, the higher-order shear deformations, the length scale parameter, the geomet- ric dimensions, and the different boundary conditions on the critical buckling loads are studied in detail, by assuming that Young's modulus obeys an exponential distribution function in both length and thickness directions. To reach the desired critical buckling load, the appropriate exponential FG indexes and geometric shape of micro-beams can be designed according to the proposed theory. 展开更多

The warping may become an important factor for the precise transverse vibrations of curved beams. Thus, the first aim of this study is to specify the structural design parameters where the influence of cross-sectional warping becomes great and the first-order shear deformation theory lacks the precision necessary. The outof-plane vibrations of the first-order shear deformation theory are compared with the warping-included vibrations as the curvature and/or thickness increase for symmetric and asymmetric transversely-functionally graded(TFG)curved beams. The second aim is to determine the influence of design parameters on the vibrations. The circular/exact elliptical beams are formed via curved mixed finite elements(MFEs)based on the exact curvature and length. The stress-free conditions are satisfied on three-dimensional(3D)constitutive equations. The variation of functionally graded(FG)material constituents is considered based on the power-law dependence. The cross-sectional warping deformations are defined over a displacement-type FE formulation. The warping-included MFEs(W-MFEs)provide satisfactory 3D structural characteristics with smaller degrees of freedom(DOFs)compared with the brick FEs.The Newmark method is used for the forced vibrations. 展开更多

This study examines the wave propagation characteristics for a bi-directional functional grading of barium titanate(BaTiO_(3)) and cobalt ferrite(CoFe_(2)O_(4)) porous nanoshells, the porosity distribution of which is simulated by the honeycomb-shaped symmetrical and asymmetrical distribution functions. The nonlocal strain gradient theory(NSGT) and first-order shear deformation theory are used to determine the size effect and shear deformation, respectively.Nonlocal governing equations are derived for the nanoshells by Hamilton's principle. The resulting dimensionless differential equations are solved by means of an analytical solution of the combined exponential function after dimensionless treatment. Finally, extensive parametric surveys are conducted to investigate the influence of diverse parameters, such as dimensionless scale parameters,radiusto-thickness ratios,bi-directional functionally graded(FG) indices, porosity coefficients, and dimensionless electromagnetic potentials on the wave propagation characteristics.Based on the analysis results, the effect of the dimensionless scale parameters on the dispersion relationship is found to be related to the ratio of the scale parameters. The wave propagation characteristics of nanoshells in the presence of a magnetoelectric field depend on the bi-directional FG indices. 展开更多

A nonlocal study of the vibration responses of functionally graded(FG)beams supported by a viscoelastic Winkler-Pasternak foundation is presented. The damping responses of both the Winkler and Pasternak layers of the foundation are considered in the formulation, which were not considered in most literature on this subject, and the bending deformation of the beams and the elastic and damping responses of the foundation as nonlocal by uniting the equivalently differential formulation of well-posed strain-driven(ε-D)and stress-driven(σ-D)two-phase local/nonlocal integral models with constitutive constraints are comprehensively considered, which can address both the stiffness softening and toughing effects due to scale reduction. The generalized differential quadrature method(GDQM)is used to solve the complex eigenvalue problem. After verifying the solution procedure,a series of benchmark results for the vibration frequency of different bounded FG beams supported by the foundation are obtained.Subsequently, the effects of the nonlocality of the foundation on the undamped/damping vibration frequency of the beams are examined. 展开更多

This work focus on the mechanical behaviors, which are related to the size effect, functionally graded(FG)effect and Poisson effect,of an axially functionally graded(AFG)micro-beam whose elastic modulus varies according to sinusoidal law along its axial direction. The displacement field of the AFG micro-beam is set according to the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory.Employing the modified couple stress theory(MCST),the components of strain, curvature, stress and couple stress are expressed by the second derivative of the deflection of the AFG micro-beam.A size-dependent model related to FG effect and Poisson effect, which includes the formulations of bending stiffness, deflection, normal stress and couple stress,is developed to predict the mechanical behaviors of the AFG microbeam by employing the principle of minimum potential energy. The mechanical behaviors of a simply supported AFG micro-beam are numerically investigated using the developed model for demonstrating the size effects,FG effects and Poisson effects of the AFG micro-beam.Results show that the mechanical behaviors of AFG micro-beams are distinctly size-dependent only when the ratio of micro-beam height to material length-scale parameter is small enough. The FG parameter is an important factor that determines and regulates the size-dependent behaviors of AFG micro-beams.The influences of Poisson’s ratio on the mechanical behaviors of AFG micro-beams are not negligible, and should be also considered in the design and analysis of an AFG micro-beam.This work supplies a theoretical basis and a technical reference for the design and analysis of AFG micro-beams in the related regions. 展开更多

In this pap er, a novel size-dep endent functionally graded (FG) cylindrical shell model is develop ed based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory in conjunction with the Gurtin-Murdoch surface elasticity theory . The new model containing a nonlocal parameter, a material length scale parameter, and several surface elastic constants can capture three typical typ es of size e ects simultaneously , which are the nonlocal stress ef- fect, the strain gradient e ect, and the surface energy e ects. With the help of Hamilton’s principle and rst-order shear deformation theory , the non-classical governing equations and related b oundary conditions are derived. By using the prop osed model, the free vibra- tion problem of FG cylindrical nanoshells with material prop erties varying continuously through the thickness according to a p ower-law distribution is analytically solved, and the closed-form solutions for natural frequencies under various b oundary conditions are obtained. The bending and free vibrational behaviors of functionally graded(FG)cylindrical beams with radially and axially varying material inhomogeneities are investigated.Based on a high-order cylindrical beam model, where the shear deformation and rotary inertia are both considered, the two coupled governing differential motion equations for the deflection and rotation are established. The analytical bending solutions for various boundary conditions are derived. In the vibrational analysis of FG cylindrical beams, the two governing equations are firstly changed to a single equation by means of an auxiliary function, and then the vibration mode is expanded into shifted Chebyshev polynomials.Numerical examples are given to investigate the effects of the material gradient indices on the deflections, the stress distributions, and the eigenfrequencies of the cylindrical beams, respectively.By comparing the obtained numerical results with those obtained by the three-dimensional(3D)elasticity theory and the Timoshenko beam theory, the effectiveness of the present approach is verified. 展开更多

This study presents the size-dependent nonlinear thermal postbuckling characteristics of a porous functionally graded material(PFGM) microplate with a central cutout with various shapes using isogeometric numerical technique incorporating nonuniform rational B-splines. To construct the proposed non-classical plate model, the nonlocal strain gradient continuum elasticity is adopted on the basis of a hybrid quasithree-dimensional(3D) plate theory under through-thickness deformation conditions by only four variables. By taking a refined power-law function into account in conjunction with the Touloukian scheme, the temperature-porosity-dependent material properties are extracted. With the aid of the assembled isogeometric-based finite element formulations, nonlocal strain gradient thermal postbuckling curves are acquired for various boundary conditions as well as geometrical and material parameters. It is portrayed that for both size dependency types, by going deeper in the thermal postbuckling domain, gaps among equilibrium curves associated with various small scale parameter values get lower, which indicates that the pronounce of size effects reduces by going deeper in the thermal postbuckling regime. Moreover, we observe that the central cutout effect on the temperature rise associated with the thermal postbuckling behavior in the presence of the effect of strain gradient size and absence of nonlocality is stronger compared with the case including nonlocality in absence of the strain gradient small scale effect. 展开更多

In this paper,an exact closed-form solution for a curved sandwich panel with two piezoelectric layers as actuator and sensor that are inserted in the top and bottom facings is presented. The core is made from functionally graded(FG)material that has heterogeneous power-law distribution through the radial coordinate. It is assumed that the core is subjected to a magnetic field whereas the core is covered by two insulated composite layers. To determine the exact solution, first characteristic equations are derived for different material types in a polar coordinate system,namely,magneto-elastic,elastic,and electro-elastic for the FG,orthotropic, and piezoelectric materials, respectively. The displacement-based method is used instead of the stress-based method to derive a set of closed-form real-valued solutions for both real and complex roots.Based on the elasticity theory, exact solutions for the governing equations are determined layer-by-layer that are considerably more accurate than typical simplified theories. The accuracy of the presented method is compared and validated with the available literature and the finite element simulation. The effects of geometrical and material parameters such as FG index, angular span along with external conditions such as magnetic field, mechanical pressure, and electrical difference are investigated in detail through numerical examples. 展开更多

In this paper,we propose a specific two-layer model consisting of a functionally graded(FG)layer and a piezoelectric semiconductor(PS)layer.Based on the macroscopic theory of PS materials, the effects brought about by the attached FG layer on the piezotronic behaviors of homogeneous n-type PS fibers and PN junctions are investigated. The semi-analytical solutions of the electromechanical fields are obtained by expanding the displacement and carrier concentration variation into power series. Results show that the antisymmetry of the potential and electron concentration distributions in homogeneous n-type PS fibers is destroyed due to the material inhomogeneity of the attached FG layer. In addition,by creating jump discontinuities in the material properties of the FG layer, potential barriers/wells can be produced in the middle of the fiber.Similarly, the potential barrier configuration near the interface of a homogeneous PS PN junction can also be manipulated in this way, which offers a new choice for the design of PN junction based devices. 展开更多

In order to have continuous stress and deformation ?elds, a new semi-analytical approach is developed to predict the swelling induced?nite bending for a functionally graded(FG) layer composed of a pH-sensitive hydrogel,in which the cross-link density is continuously distributed along the thickness direction under the plane strain condition. The results show that the totally 1mm-thick FG-TBCs have excellent thermal shock resistance due to the fact that the coatings have no any peeling-off after 200 thermal cycles. The microstructures and morphologies of FG-TBCs were characterized and analyzed by SEM. 展开更多
