Integrating task-based teaching approach into grammar teaching

Task-based teaching approach is a new teaching method which absorbs the achievements of modem language teaching theories. It is supposed to be an effective method in promoting learners＇ language competence. However, empirical studies of its application are rarely found in the field of grammar teaching. This paper tries to integrate task-based teaching approach into grammar teaching in order to probe into its validity and feasibility in grammar teaching.

Teaching English Grammar Through Communicative Language Teaching Approach

Grammar is an important part of language learning. In order for students to have a functional knowledge of a language (in other words, that they can spontaneously produce language) they must have at least some knowledge about the grammatical constructs of the language in question. How grammar can be taught? Considering various second language teaching methods, teaching grammar through Communicative Language Teaching Approach is the most talked. Emphasis in this article is put on the application of Communicative Language Teaching Approach in grammar teaching in college English classes.

Comparison of Teaching Approaches of the Subjunctive Mood—Comparison of Two Grammar Books from Home and Abroad

This study compared the different approaches of introducing the subjunctive mood in Advanced English Grammar and Grammar Dimensions in the hope that it will help ESL teachers to make choice of the proper ways of teaching the subjunctive mood,one of the most serious grammatical problems ever encountered by most ESL learners in China.Also,the main causes of the students’drawbacks in learning subjunctive mood are excavated and some feasible solutions in mastering this difficult item in English grammar are presented in this study.

Grammar Instruction and Evaluation of an EFL Textbook of China

By examining recent studies on grammar instruction, which reflect the waxing and waning of grammar instruction in history, and some new teaching approaches and techniques in grammar teaching, this paper concludes that grammar instruction does make a difference to foreign language teaching and thus is important and necessary for Chinese leamers, especially English majors, to develop their ability of using the language accurately and fluently in real life. And on the basis of it, this paper evaluates an EFL textbook of China in terms of some grammar teaching approaches and techniques to illustrate the application and practice of these new perspectives and new teaching approaches and techniques in Chinese foreign language teaching and leaming.

Functional Orientation and Practice of Inductive and Deductive Approaches to Grammar Teaching in EFL

To solve the ambiguous understanding of Grammar Teaching position,based on explicit grammatical knowledge,this paper discusses the grammar position in EFL,compares both its pros and cons between deductive and inductive approaches,and indicates that grammar teaching by either approach alone has disadvantages,should adopt a combination technique.

A Communicative Approach to College English Grammar Teaching and Learning

In response to the misconception that Communicative Language Teaching means no teaching of grammar,it is argued that grammar is as important as traffic rules for safe and smooth traffic on the road.To achieve appropriate and effective communication,a communicative approach to college grammar teaching and learning is proposed.Both teachers and learners should change their attitudes toward and conceptions about grammar teaching and learning;additionally,teaching grammar in the company of reading and writing helps learners learn and acquire grammar in meaningful contexts.

An Empirical Study of Dictogloss Approach in EnglishGrammar Teaching

Traditional test-oriented teaching puts heavy weight on the English learning.The students’implicit English grammar knowledge,which enables the development of their English language ability,was overlooked.In English classroom instruction,researchers and teachers have been attempting to seek efficient and integrative approaches to make English grammar learning effortless and autonomous.Dictogloss is believed to be an effective method which offers teachers and learners an integrative method for second language acquisition(SLA).Dictogloss is a task which motivates language learners to interact cooperatively in small group in order to construct a linguistically acceptable text similar in content and style to one they have previously heard and taken notes on.However,just few empirical studies have been provided so far.Therefore,the author attempts to undertake an experimental research to see whether systematic dictogloss is an effective way in English grammar teaching and whether it is more effective than the traditional PPP Approach(Presentation,Practice,and Production)in English grammar classroom instruction.Based on rationales concerning implicit and explicit grammar instruction and focused task instruction,the study reported a one-semester experiment in which two groups of students(Experimental Group,50 students in total;Control Group,50 students in total)followed the same teaching curriculum except the dictogloss practice conducted in the EG.After training,various forms of data were collected through language tests,questionnaires,classroom observation log and interview.At the same time,SPSS was used to manage,analyze,and display the statistical data collected from the pretest and posttest through descriptive statistics,independent samples t-test and paired sample t-test.Based on the previous research of dictogloss and the related theories,the present researcher analyzed the transcript data.Results of the pretest showed that there is no significant difference in two groups’English proficiency.And the result of the posttest showed that dictogloss approach in classroom grammar instruction plays an important role in promoting the students’participation in the classroom activities and English grammar knowledge learning,especially compared with PPP Approach.Moreover,the result of a survey on students’attitude toward dictogloss demonstrates that English learners view dictogloss as an effective learning device in terms of their English grammar knowledge study.The present study is of practical significance.It is expected that the findings of this study will help foreign language teachers further understand the effect of dictogloss practice and apply dictogloss for pedagogical purposes.Besides,the findings will encourage them to make use of dictogloss as a learning device.Finally,it will shed lights on the implementation and popularization of dictogloss in Chinese English class.

On Grammar Translation Approach and Communicative Language Teaching

Be driven by new knowledge about the learner and the English language, foreign language teaching has developed into many different schools based on different theories. All of them have their own advantages and disadvantages. Focusing on two of the most commonly used ones--the Grammar Translation Approach and Communicative Language Teaching, this paper gives comments about these two different approaches and give advices that combine them together to promote language teaching.

A Comparison between Deductive and Inductive Approaches for Teaching EFL Grammar to High School Students

This study had the purpose of testingtwo methods for teaching grammar in Englishasa Foreign Language(EFL)class:the deductive and inductive approaches in terms of effectiveness and rapport.This research was conducted in a public high school in Ecuador.Seventy students enrolled in the second year of senior high school participated.One in-service teacher taught the EFL classes during the process of intervention(10 weeks),and two EFL teachers observed all of these classes and recorded the information by filling in observation sheets.The students were administered grammar pretests and post-tests in order to assess their grammar knowledge.The results of the tests showed a significant difference in the scores in favor of the inductive approach.After the statistical analysis of the data obtained from the tests and observation sheets,we concluded that the inductive approach is more effective for teaching grammar in the EFL classroom in terms of instruction and rapport.

Analysis of the Advantages and Drawbacks of PPP Approach in Teaching Grammar of a Second Language

This paper is aiming at analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of PPP approach in teaching L2 grammar. PPP approach, referring to the method of Presentation, Practice and Production, is one of the traditional language teaching instructions in classroom. There are advantages and drawbacks using PPP to teach grammar. It can benefit both L2 teachers and learners whereas it limits learner autonomy and the interaction among learners in language grammar teaching classroom.

Enhancing Grammar Learning with a Multimedia Instructional Module:Design and Teaching of“Shì...de”Construction for CFL learners

This pilot study examined the effectiveness and students’perceptions of a multimedia module on intermediate Chinese-as-a-Foreign-Language(CFL)learners’understanding and use of the“shì...de”construction.The module was designed based on the First Principles of Instruction(Morrill,2002)and the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning(Mayer,2009;2014).It provided a systematic and comprehensive approach to teaching the“shì...de”construction,one of the most challenging grammar points in CFL.Twenty-two CFL learners participated in this mixed-methods study.Data were collected using pre-and post-tests,a survey,think-alouds,and semi-structured interviews.Findings show that after using the module,students’understanding and use of the construction significantly improved,except for their understanding of the second usage.The students enjoyed using the module and appreciated how it was designed,the way it was presented,and its availability.The reasons for the effectiveness of the module were analyzed and led to suggested improvements to the design of the module.The detailed description of the design process and the research result contribute to the knowledge of designing grammar teaching modules with multimedia for online,blended,and flipped learning.

A Comparative Study of Grammar Teaching in the Grammar-Translation, Audio-Lingual and Communicative Approaches

Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in the role of grammar in English language teaching. Grammar teaching has become a preoccupation among more and more language researchers and teachers. This paper sets out to compare the views of grammar teaching in the Grammar-Translation, Audio-Lingual and Communicative Approaches from the following five points, the status of grammar teaching, the different methods in the instruction of grammar, the teacher's role in grammar teaching, the characteristics of typical teaching activities in the three approaches with detailed examples and the effect of the three approaches to grammar teaching.It is concluded that grammar teaching should subscribe to an eclectic approach, that is, to take advantage of the strong points of each approach and avoid their weak points. Moreover, grammar teaching should be conducted according to the variables of learners and teaching circumstances.

The Effects of Grammar-Translation Method and Communicative Approach on Oral English Teaching

Foreign language teaching method is a science which does research, teaching and learning on the rules of the foreign language. This article chooses and compares two foreign language teaching methods: grammar- translation method and communicative approach which are very influential in their own ages, tries to find out if the students perform differently in oral test when taught with grammar-translation method than when taught by communicative approach.The purpose is to improve the cognition of the teaching method theories and enhance the guide to the teaching practice, so that the teacher can choose an appropriate method when the speaking lesson is given.

Application of Task-based Approach in College English Vocabulary Teaching

With the rapid development of economy and society,more and more people pay attention to English teaching.Vocabulary,the basic unit of language,is regarded as the center of language teaching by many linguists and educators.For Chinese students,vocabulary learning is also the most difficult and important problem in language learning.Unlike that in English-speaking countries,there is an absence of a foreign language environment for Chinese students,and most of their vocabulary is derived from classroom learning.Thus it is necessary to find an effective method to deal with vocabulary teaching.It analyzes college English vocabulary teaching,as college students have formed the corresponding language skills with more suitability.For a long time,students develop the habit of memorizing words repeatedly,consuming a lot of time,but the result is not satisfactory.Faced with this phenomenon,this paper analyzes the problems existing in College English vocabulary teaching and explores the reasons of the problems.Then it analyzes the application of task-based approach in college English vocabulary teaching.

Some Suggestions on Teaching Grammar in Junior Middle School

Teaching grammar is one of the key links in English teaching.At present,not understanding morphology and syntax correctly causes some students to gradually lose self-confidence in learning English.Now the Communicative Teaching Approach is being used more and more widely.Naturally,to train students' ability of communicating and expressing themselves becomes the focal point of teaching.First of all,the author presents the present situation of grammar teaching in Junior Middle Schools.Then the author gives some suggestions on how to deal with these problems.The author's aims are to help teachers,through these methods,improve traditional grammar teaching modes,arouse students' interests in learning English grammar,and enhance their ability to use grammar rules.

Analysis on Grammar Teaching Mode in Current Chinese University Based on Freeman's Three Dimension Theory

it is universal acknowledgement that grammar takes an indispensable place in English learning yet increasing evidences show that there are still serious problems exists in China grammar teaching:low learning motivation,goal-oriented teaching mode and traditional deductive approach.Freeman’s Three Dimension Theory(1991)suggests that grammar should be understood as three respective:form,meaning,usage.This thesis analyses the dominant deficiencies which reveals traditional teaching mode only lays emphasis on form or meaning.Neglecting on importance of context obscures mastery of grammar rules by students.By the end of this paper,taking teaching of conditionals as examples,a suggestive teaching model is provided based on Three Dimension Theory(Freeman,1991).

Grammar Teaching in Various Language Teaching Methods

The aim of this assignment is to find out how grammar is featured in various teaching methods. Five different methods will be discussed, which are Grammar Translation Method, The Audiolingual Method, PPP Approach, Communicative Language Teaching and Task-based Language Teaching, followed with deep analysis of the characteristics of grammar to show whether this feature is teachable or not within a particular method.

Grammar Teaching as Product or as Process？

The teaching of grammar has received increasing attention in recent language teaching and learning literature. The major argument lies in teaching grammar as product or as process. Teaching grammar as product focuses on giving learners a clear and explicit framework about the language; while teaching grammar as a process emphasizes the use of language by the learner. This paper gives a brief introduction of teaching grammar as product and as process and points out that language teachers can choose the more appropriate approach of them in the specific context.
