The Study of Chinese Poem Translation from the Perspective of Ideational Grammatical Metaphor

The study aims to make a comparative study of 3 translated versions of Niao Ming Chien written by Chinese ancient poet Wang Wei from the perspective of ideational grammatical metaphor for the purpose of finding out how grammatical metaphor can provide a peculiar insight to the translation of Chinese poems.

The analysis of grammatical metaphor in the two translations of A Dream of Red Mansion

Despite the various perspectives of the study of the two English translations of A Dream of Red Mansion, very few studies probe into them from the angle of grammatical metaphor. The paper attempts to conduct a qualitative and quantitative study of the two English translations based on the three grammatical metaphors, trying to prove that grammatical metaphor can be used to decipher and unveil some phenomena in translation as well as being used as a criterion to assess the translation.

On the Cognitive Mechanism of Grammatical Metaphor

The previous studies of grammatical metaphor mainly emphasized its metafunctions or the classifications and identifications in discourse, and treated rankshift as its mechanism of occurrence. However, the question is ＂Why does the rankshift make it possible？＂ This paper is going to study grammatical metaphor from a cognitive perspective and will treat cross-grammatical domain mapping as its mechanism of occurrence.

The Comparative Study of Metaphors -- From Cognitive and Systemic-Functional Perspectives

Metaphors have different expressions in cognitive and systematic-functional linguistics, which are conceptual metaphors and ideational metaphors. Conceptual metaphors belong to traditional vocabulary metaphors, and ideational grammatical metaphors are pointed out by Halliday--the main representative of systemic-functional theory. This paper elaborates on the specific grammatical feature of EST （English for Science and Technology） text--＂nominalization of processes＂ to reveal the source of ideational metaphors. From the analysis of some examples, it is found that nominalization as a grammatical metaphor expresses the transference between process types, so it reveals the essence of ideational grammatical metaphors. Meanwhile, the comparison made between grammatical metaphors and vocabulary metaphors reflects the similarities between conceptual metaphors and ideational metaphors. In this way, this paper comes to the conclusion that the combination of the study methods of metaphors from both cognitive and systemic-functional perspectives is the best way to uncover the basic characteristic of human thinking.

Metafunctions and stylistic features of nominalization

As an important feature of written language, nominalization is frequently used in formal texts. Using the approach of systemic functional grammar, the paper presents a detailed analysis of the three metafunctions of nominalization, which entails the positive and negative stylistic effects. The paper also discusses the relationship between form, function and stylistic features.

Academic Student Writing in Spanish in Terms of Success and Failure From the Functional Perspective

This paper is part of a major project investigating the language of the humanities in Mexico and the United States from the systemic functional perspective exploring different genres within the academic register. An analysis of essays written by university students and teachers is presented here. Lexicogrammatical features of the texts are examined and their differences and similarities are detected. Three groups of texts are compared： ＂poor＂ texts, ＂good＂ texts, and model texts in order to determine the predominant features of the students＇ writing in relation to the grade marks that they received. The study realized permits us to arrive at the conclusion that success in the academic writing is linked to a larger number of complex themes, grammatical metaphors, as well as to a higher lexical density.

Using GM to Analyze EST Texts

The role of the grammatical metaphor （GM） theory to systemic-functional linguistics （SFL） as well as to metaphor studies has been generally acknowledged. Based on the framework of GM theory in SFL, this thesis, by conducting a statistical analysis of the distribution of 13 types of GM in 20 English for science and technology （EST） texts which are chosen at random and aimed at different readers, is intended, on the one hand, to test and verify the applicability and feasibility of Halliday＇s grammatical metaphor theory as well as the correctness of Halliday-Martin＇s claim and on the other, to analyze the reasons for using GM, especially experiential GM substantially in EST texts.

Realization of Implicit Evaluation in News Text

Martin＇s Appraisal System Theory presents a powerful tool to decode the journalist＇s attitude or world view in news text. The evaluation in this Appraisal System can be further classified into explicit evaluation, which inscribes the attitude through the attitudinal vocabulary and implicit evaluation, which invokes the attitude through the use of non-core lexis. Martin （2005） pointed out that the implicit evaluation is realized by three approaches： lexical metaphor, the selection of ideational meanings, and graduation. However, the invoked attitude can be achieved by an amount of resources other than the above approaches. In this paper through the exploration of invoked attitude in the English-language China Doily, we find that the attitude is also invoked through grammatical metaphor, general noun as well as conjunction. It is of great significance to decode the journalists＇ or newspapers＇ viewpoints by exploring the implicit evaluation in the news text.

THE STUDY OF NOMINALIZATION ACQUISITION IN CHINESE EFL LEARNERS

The paper focuses on the use of nominalizations in English compositions of Chinese EFL learners in college. From the research, we conclude that the cognitive capability of the students and the interference of their mother tongue are mutually responsible for the low use of nominalizations. In addition, the use of nominalization mainly reveals the learner's cognitive competence. Our suggestion on the teaching of nominalization, as well as English writing has been incorporated.

Iconicity of the Poetic Form:The Rhythm in a Short Story

This paper proposes that poetic form is a phonetic-conceptual integration that works from the iconic relations and cognitive mapping between the phonetic complex and the conceptualaffective complex,and that such mappings can be analyzed using the blending model by Fauconnier and Turner.Because literary expressions maintain a relation of iconicity with its meaning,it is possible to perform a metaphorical reading of the text as a single poetic form or a sole symbolic construct.As an example of the application of this model in literary analysis,some stylistic strategies from "Los inocentes",by Ines Arredondo,are analyzed with the purpose of showing the effects of iconic relationships that are created between the phonetic complex and the conceptual-affective complex at the moment of building the meaning of the literary text.
