Local communities, for instance, had their local coping strategies that enabled them to stay in their communities even amid these ordeals, and climate change disaster threats. This work strives to understand flood impacts and the local peoples’ adaptation or coping strategies along the River Gambia basin. A community-based cross-sectional research study of 422 research participants of which 294 are males (69.7%) and females 128 (30.3%), and a focus group discussion of 10 groups which comprised 5 female groups and 5 male groups respectively found that 98.6% of the households experienced floods in their community, and 70.6% experienced flood in their houses, 2.1% have impending flood information and 88.4% do not know evacuation centres. The majority of the households had some local coping strategies, but they acknowledged their insufficient effectiveness. The result also shows that the impact of floods on farmlands, roads, buildings, and livestock was greatly felt. Coping strategies such as sandbags, raised elevations, contour bonds, dikes, and buildings on highlands were all found to be common mechanisms the local people used. The study opines that floods affect communities, but the effects vary depending on individual assets.展开更多

文摘Environmental DNA(eDNA)has been used as an important tool for fish diversity analysis, which can greatly solve the problems in traditional survey methodology. However, little work has been done on the actual monitoring accuracy of eDNA.In this study,we analyzed the current status of fish resources in Erhai Lake in Yunnan,SW China,by dividing the lake into three sectors according to habitat differences, and compared the results of eDNA and traditional capture methods to investigate the shortcomings of the current analysis of eDNA results.A total of 27 fish species were detected by eDNA and traditional capture methods, including 20 and 19 fish species, respectively, and additional differences in fish composition between the two methods. The alpha diversity showed higher fish abundance and lower fish diversity by eDNA method compared to the traditional capture method, demonstrating that eDNA was not superior for use in fish diversity analysis.Fish community similarity analysis showed that community differences were generally significant for eDNA(P<0.05).RDA analysis indicated that environmental factors did not significantly affect fish communities monitored by the eDNA method. However, water temperature, aquatic plants, and water depth had significant(P<0.05)effects on fish communities in the traditional capture method, suggesting that eDNA results are insensitive to the effects of environmental factors. Our results illustrate the effectiveness of eDNA in fish identification and the issues in quantification compared to traditional capture methods. Therefore, combining eDNA with traditional methods is a more effective method for analyzing eDNA metabarcoding, following which the protocols of both quantitative methods can be designed to explore the regularity of eDNA quantification.
文摘Objective Access to improved sanitation is a fundamental human right and an important aspect of Public Health. However,an estimated thousands of people in Ghana especially, the West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly(WMMA)still have no access to adequate toilet facilities. This has brought untold health repercussions to the inhabitants, the community, and the environment at large. To address this menace, the community-led total sanitation(CLTS)was implemented. This study aimed to assess communities’perspectives on the implementation of CLTS and to understand the factors influencing its success and failures. Methods A mixed-method approach involving sequential qualitative and quantitative methods was employed in this study.Participants for the quantitative study were randomly selected and surveyed using questionnaires. The qualitative study employed focus group discussion involving purposively sampled participants including assembly members, opinion leaders, and assembly staff. Results The CLTS program in WMMA realized an apparent use of construction and proper use of household latrines leading to a reduction of open defecation free(ODF)and two communities achieving sanitized status in the history of the study area, enabling the training of latrine artisans and natural leaders to facilitate the CLTS expansion and sustainability, improved sanitation and hygiene, strengthened the enforcement of community rules and regulations and many others. Conclusion The CLTS program has received more widespread acceptance in the study area than the previous government policy of constructing public toilets, which was greeted with massive failures due to poor implementation. To ensure that gains achieved through CLTS implementation are sustained longer,it is recommended that chiefs and opinion leaders should be involved in the CLTS programs to ensure checks and enforcement. The entrenchment of bylaws and more education to address enduring myths and misconceptions will sustain the program.Subsidies in the form of sanitation loans for latrine construction materials by the government and supporting non-governmental organizations(NGOs)will be paramount in sustaining ODF.

文摘The dominant plant litter plays a crucial role in carbon(C)and nutrients cycling as well as ecosystem functions maintenance on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(QTP).The impact of litter decomposition of dominant plants on edaphic parameters and grassland productivity has been extensively studied, while its decomposition processes and relevant mechanisms in this area remain poorly understood. We conducted a three-year litter decomposition experiment in the Gansu Gannan Grassland Ecosystem National Observation and Research Station,an alpine meadow ecosystem on the QTP,to investigate changes in litter enzyme activities and bacterial and fungal communities, and clarify how these critical factors regulated the decomposition of dominant plant Elymus nutans(E.nutans)litter.The results showed that cellulose and hemicellulose, which accounted for 95%of the initial lignocellulose content, were the main components in E.nutans litter decomposition. The litter enzyme activities ofβ-1,4-glucosidase(BG),β-1,4-xylosidase(BX),andβ-D-cellobiosidase(CBH)decreased with decomposition while acid phosphatase, leucine aminopeptidase, and phenol oxidase increased with decomposition. We found that both litter bacterial and fungal communities changed significantly with decomposition.Furthermore, bacterial communities shifted from copiotrophic-dominated to oligotrophic-dominated in the late stage of litter decomposition.Partial least squares path model revealed that the decomposition of E.nutans litter was mainly driven by bacterial communities and their secreted enzymes.Bacteroidota and Proteobacteria were important producers of enzymes BG,BX,and CBH,and their relative abundances were tightly positively related to the content of cellulose and hemicellulose, indicating that Bacteroidota and Proteobacteria are the main bacterial taxa of the decomposition of E.nutans litter. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that bacterial communities are the main driving forces behind the decomposition of E.nutans litter, highlighting the vital roles of bacterial communities in affecting the ecosystem functions of the QTP by regulating dominant plant litter decomposition.

文摘The spatial and temporal distribution of bacterioplankton communities plays a vital role in understanding the ecological dynamics and health of aquatic ecosystems. In this study,we conducted a comprehensive investigation of the bacterioplankton communities in the Qiantang River(Hangzhou section).Water samples were collected quarterly from seven sites over a one-year period.Physical and chemical parameters, including dissolved oxygen(DO),water temperature(WT),chemical oxygen demand(COD),nitrite(NO_(2)^(-)),active phosphate(PO_(4)^(3-))and other indices were determined. In this study, theαdiversity,βdiversity and abundance differences of bacterial communities were investigated using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing analysis. The spatial and temporal distribution characteristics and main driving factors of the bacterioplankton community structure and diversity were discussed. The results showed that a total of 57 phyla were detected in the bacterioplankton community, among which Proteobacteria and Actinomycetes were the two dominant groups with the highest relative abundance. The results of PCoA based on Bray-Curtis distance showed that the sampling season had a slightly greater effect on the changes in bacterioplankton community structure in the Qiantang River.Mantel and partial Mantel test showed that environmental variables(Mantel r=0.6739,P<0.0001;partial Mantel r=0.507,P=0.0001)were more important than geographical distance(Mantel r=0.5322,P<0.001;partial Mantel r=0.1563,P=0.001).The distance attenuation model showed that there was significant distance attenuation in all four seasons, and the maximum limit of bacterial community diffusion was found in spring.RDA analysis showed that nine environmental factors, including COD,WT and DO,significantly affected community distribution(P<0.05).This study provides valuable insights into the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of bacterioplankton communities, shedding light on their ecological roles in the Qiantang River. The information obtained can guide future research on the interactions between bacterioplankton and their environment, enabling the development of effective conservation strategies and sustainable management practices for aquatic ecosystems.

文摘It is of great significance to study the effects of desert plants on soil enzyme activities and soil organic carbon(SOC)for maintaining the stability of the desert ecosystem. In this study,we studied the responses of soil enzyme activities and SOC fractions(particulate organic carbon(POC)and mineral-associated organic carbon(MAOC))to five typical desert plant communities(Convolvulus tragacanthoides,Ephedra rhytidosperma,Stipa breviflora,Stipa tianschanica var.gobica, and Salsola laricifolia communities)in the proluvial fan in the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountain in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region,China. We recorded the plant community information mainly including the plant coverage and herb and shrub species, and obtained the aboveground biomass and plant species diversity through sample surveys in late July 2023.Soil samples were also collected at depths of 0–10 cm(topsoil)and 10–20 cm(subsoil)to determine the soil physicochemical properties and enzyme activities. The results showed that the plant coverage and aboveground biomass of S.laricifolia community were significantly higher than those of C.tragacanthoides,S.breviflora,and S.tianschanica var.gobica communities(P<0.05).Soil enzyme activities varied among different plant communities. In the topsoil, the enzyme activities of alkaline phosphatase(ALP)andβ-1,4-glucosidas(βG)were significantly higher in E.rhytidosperma and S.tianschanica var.gobica communities than in other plant communities(P<0.05).The topsoil had higher POC and MAOC contents than the subsoil.Specifically, the content of POC in the topsoil was 18.17%–42.73%higher than that in the subsoil. The structural equation model(SEM)indicated that plant species diversity, soil pH,and soil water content(SWC)were the main factors influencing POC and MAOC.The soil pH inhibited the formation of POC and promoted the formation of MAOC.Conversely,SWC stimulated POC production and hindered MAOC formation. Our study aimed to gain insight into the effects of desert plant communities on soil enzyme activities and SOC fractions,as well as the drivers of SOC fractions in the proluvial fan in the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountain and other desert ecosystems.
文摘In recent years, under the influence of multiple factors such as traditional ideas and living economic conditions, the aging population in China continues to increase. Most of the elderly are more inclined to aged at home, and the first places for elderly activities are communities and the surrounding environment, which greatly affects the convenience of life and happiness of the elderly. In this paper,Changxindian area in Fengtai District of Beijing was as the research object, and detailed calculation and analysis were carried out by using POI data and arcGIS software. The relative location of residential areas and surrounding public toilets was explored, and the best location of public toilets in the daily walking area under the model of community home-based care for the elderly was further studied.

文摘The rapid growth of distributed renewable energy penetration is promoting the evolution of the energy system toward decentralization and decentralized and digitized smart grids. This study was based on energy blockchain, and developed a dual-biding mechanism based on the real-time energy surplus and demand in the local smart grid, which is expected to enable reliable, affordable, and clean energy supply in smart communities. In the proposed system, economic benefits could be achieved by replacing fossil-fuel-based electricity with the high penetration of affordable solar PV electricity. The reduction of energy surplus realized by distributed energy production and P2P energy trading, within the smart grid results in less transmission loss and lower requirements for costly upgrading of existing grids.By adopting energy blockchain and smart contract technologies, energy secure trading with a low risk of privacy leakage could be accommodated. The prototype is examined through a case study, and the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed mechanism are further validated by scenario analysis.
文摘Flood disasters as Climate change hazards are common in developing countries, particularly in communities along the river Gambia. The study opines that floods affect communities, but the effects vary depending on individual assets.
文摘Taking Zhaoyu Historical City in Qixian County as an example, this paper explores the production process of tourism space in Zhaoyu Historical City in the context of consumption, based on Lefebvre's triadic dialectic theory. The study reveals that, driven by the development of tourism, subjects such as the government and planners possess absolute dominance over spatial representations, while residents demonstrate receptive and adaptive action strategies and social relations are reproduced, presenting a harmonious state.Further exploring the tourism community in the environmental performance of the subject of action, social relations, consumption demand, daily life practice, cultural capital, etc.,the daily life practice of the tourism community has transcended the original logic of tourism spatial production and has a certain extension. The mechanism analysis in this paper can help guide the healthy development of tourism space in the neighboring historical cities or communities and achieve the dual purpose of promoting the economic development of the community and heritage protection.
文摘As Climate Change Haven Communities are constructed across the Northern Hemisphere, it will be necessary to attract two types of migrants to populate them. The first group consists of professionals and companies in eco-sustainable businesses, such as law firms, insurance companies, investment firms, banking, technological innovation, mass media, medical research and pharmaceutical research. The second group will consist of persons engaged in organic/eco-sustainable agriculture whose crops and animal husbandry practices can be transferred successfully to Climate Change Haven regions. The present research focuses on the social and economic variables that must be taken into account to insure that each new Climate Change Haven Community becomes successfully integrated with the local population and forms a cohesive, harmonious social structure. Examples are given from the United States, France, Spain, Portugal and Italy.
文摘The end of modernism questions reality and its theoretical description, and various attempts of postmodern rethinking of the social emerge-from denial, assertion of the disappearance of the social to its salvation through radical rethinking.Theorizing around the imaginary emerges and continues as a result of this rethinking.Cornelius Castoriadis, for example, absolutizes the concept of the imaginary, which,in his opinion, even contains the rational.Charles Taylor gives imaginary, though important, but limited role as a background knowledge.Speaking of the imaginary, one cannot,of course, ignore Benedict Andersen’s imaginary communities.According to Andersen, the“imagination”of a nation, like any other community, reflects not the fact that they are“invented”or“constructed”but that they are the result of human practice, that social reality is a socio-historical and cultural product.Nation differs from other communities in the style of representation, namely, the representation-understanding,first of all,of space and time.A specific moment in time is connected not only with the past and future, but also with the same moment in another time and space measurement.People in this case, communicate and socialize through books, newspapers, and national languages. Most importantly, the nation as an imaginary community opposes itself to other communities, distinguishes itself from them, and strives for autonomy. And the guarantee of autonomy is the sovereign state, the nation-state,therefore the nation is always connected with the state and the territory of the exercise of its monopoly right. That is,the nation is an imaginary community that is real only to the extent that it is correlated with the modern territorial state.According to the author, the transformation of the national imaginary under the conditions of globalization is characterized by the loss of attachment to the territory,by the fact that territoriality ceases to be the main, organizing principle of social life.Social practices are increasingly formed beyond borders, belonging to ethnicity, national identity is not determined by territory and citizenship.Despite this,we must not forget that globalization is not a finished project. The transformation of the national imaginary should be viewed not only as the emergence of new imaginary communities, whether national or transnational, but also against the backdrop of interaction and even struggle between traditional forms of social practices and new ones,as evidenced by the growth of ethnic conflicts and separatist movements.According to Appudurai, this is also a consequence of globalization processes. And how this confrontation will end,the question remains open.

文摘The addition of silicon(Si)and organic fertilizers to soil conditioners can inhibit the transfer of heavy metal ions from soil to crops. However,it is not clear how Si and organic fertilizers affect soil properties and the micro-ecological environment and thereby reduce cadmium(Cd)accumulation in rice.In this study, the effects of L-type soil conditioners containing Si and organic fertilizers on bacterial and fungal community diversity, soil pH,organic matter, and available Si were analyzed with field experiments at two sites in Liuzhou City and Hezhou City, respectively,in Guangxi,China. With the increase of Si and organic fertilizer content in soil conditioner, rice yield respectively increased by 16.8–25.8 and 6.8–13.1%,and rice Cd content decreased significantly by 8.2–21.1 and 10.8–40.6%,respectively,at the two experimental sites.Soil microbiome analysis showed that the increase in abundance of Firmicutes and Actinobacteriota bacteria associated with Cd adsorption and sequestration, and Basidiomycota fungal populations associated with degradation of macromolecules favored the inhibition of soil Cd activity(soil exchangeable Cd decreased by 14.4–14.8 and 18.1–20.6%).This was associated with an increase in organic matter and Si content caused by applying soil conditioners. In conclusion,L-type soil conditioners, rich in Si and organic fertilizer, can reduce soil Cd bioavailability by regulating the dominant Cd passivating flora in the soil and ultimately reduce Cd accumulation in rice.

文摘In the context of global degradation and loss of natural wetlands, waterbirds have been increasingly using artificial wetlands as alternative habitats. However, waterbirds are facing various threats in these artificial wetlands, due to dramatic environmental changes induced by anthropogenic activities.Exploring the effects of these changes on the temporal dynamics of the waterbird communities can help understand how waterbirds adapt to environmental changes and thus formulate effective management and conservation plans. In this study,we carried out field surveys on waterbirds and environmental factors across 20 subsidence wetlands created by underground coal mining in the Huainan coal mining area in the breeding seasons of 2016 and 2021.We predicted that the waterbird assemblages(i.e.,number of individuals, species richness,Shannon-Wiener diversity,Pielou evenness and species composition) differed between the two years, and that these differences were correlated with the temporal changes in environmental factors.Across the surveyed wetlands,we recorded 26 waterbird species in 2016 and 23 in 2021.For individual wetlands, the number of waterbird individuals and species richness increased by 71.6% and 20.1%,respectively,over the five years, with no changes in Shannon-Wiener diversity and Pielou evenness. The overall increase in the number of bird individuals was mainly caused by an increase in vegetation gleaners and gulls that adapt well to anthropogenic activities. The species composition was significantly different between the two years, which was mainly caused by changes in the number of individuals of dominant species under influence of changes in human activities. For most wetlands, the temporal pairwiseβ-diversities could be explained by species turnover rather than nestedness, probably due to high mobility of waterbird species and dramatic changes in local environments. Our study suggests that waterbird communities could respond to environmental changes in subsidence wetlands, providing important implications for waterbird conservation in human-dominated artificial wetlands.

文摘Sexual dimorphism of plants shapes the diff erent morphology and physiology between males and females. However,it is still unclear whether it infl uences belowground ecological processes. In this study, rhizosphere soil of male and female Populus deltoides and bulk soil were collected from an 18-year plantation(male and female trees mix-planted)and grouped into three soil compartments.Soil carbon(C),nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)levels were determined, and soil bacterial communities were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing. The results showed the less total carbon and total organic carbon, the more nutrients(available phosphorus, nitrate nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen)available in the rhizosphere soils of female poplars than soils of males.However,α-diversity indices of the rhizosphere bacterial communities under male plants were signifi-cantly higher.Principal component analysis showed that the bacterial communities were signifi cantly diff erent between the male and female soil compartments.Further, the bacterial co-occurrence network in soil under male trees had more nodes and edges than under females.BugBase analysis showed the more functional bacteria taxa related to biofi lm formation and antioxidation under males. The results indicate that soils under male poplars had more diverse and more complex co-occurrence networks of the rhizosphere bacterial community than soils under female trees, implying that male poplars might have better environmental adaptability. The study provides insight into the diff erent soil-microbe interactions of dioecious plants.More details about the infl uencing mechanism of sexual dimorphism on rhizosphere soil bacterial communities need to be further studied.
