After classifying the impact factors, with grey-system theory, the evaluating grey-groups and their whitening weighing functions are defined;the grey-cluster analysis of each classified impact is performed;based on analyzing results, the calculating method of classified impact index is given. By range of action, the impact classes are grouped to three groups - global impact, regional impact, and local impact;the calculating methods of grouped and overall impact index are presented. In the preliminary stage of chemical process design, the choice of chemical reaction route is the key design decision, and the concepts of atom utilization and environmental quotient have become extremely useful tools. However, the waste quality such as chemical toxicity and other engineering factors have not been taken into account. Therefore, a synthetic route selection index, Iroute, is proposed to determine the suitability of a chemical route in this paper. Iroute considers the effects of 'extended atom economy', material renewability, chemical characteristics and some engineering factors. The extended atom economy concept regards not only the value of the desired product but also the value of byproducts. The methodology by using Iroute to compare different routes is illustrated in case study of cyclohexanone oxime and acrylonitrile manufacture. 展开更多

Current modular design method mainly focuses on product functional and manufacturing issues. In this paper, a theoretical scheme of multi-objective modularity analysis for discrete electromechanical product design was proposed. Product physical architecture was represented by a fuzzy graph, where fuzzy relationships contain environmental objectives and influence module formulation. Finally the optimal product modules combining all objectives can be searched by clustering algorithm. 展开更多

Multi level fuzzy judgement can solve the appraisement problem that considers the influences of design, manufacture, use and recovery in all life cycle or multi life cycle of a product. In the judging process it not only deals with the action of all factors, but also continues to have all messages in grade judgement. The power coefficients stand out as the main items. The hotel industry is beginning to implement green design and construction practices,saving energy,water,and resources and thus helping to preserve the environment.In addition,green building practices also can provide healthy and comfortable indoor environments to hotel occupants including guests and employees.However,there is the potential for conflict between green building practices and hotel guests’satisfaction and comfort,as the conservation of resources could detract from the quality of a guest’s visitor experience.This study adopted a case study approach to identify and analyze green design and construction practices that create a green and luxurious environment without damaging the hotels’financial position.An in-depth literature review was conducted to identify green design and construction practices,design features of premium hotels,and major design conflicts between the twin goals of green building and a luxurious hotel environment.Two LEED platinum hotels(the Proximity Hotel and the Bardessono Hotel,both in the United States)were selected and data collected on their green design and construction practices,luxurious design features,and operation and maintenance practices from multiple sources,including the owner,designer,contractor,engineer,and LEED consultant.From the perspective of the entire lifecycle of the building,this data was analyzed to identify green design and construction practices that not only provide a green,luxurious environment but also enhance the hotels’financial strength. 展开更多

Fire protection is an essential public service but also one of the costliest ones.Considerable resources are devoted to fire protection including equipment,staff,training,and the facilities to house them.Fire stations,in particular,have a significant cost impact on state and municipal budgets.Fire stations are required in most local governments and like other municipal buildings are central to identity.To limit the cost of operating a fire station,municipalities have looked to more green building options.Green-rating systems such as the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design(LEED)system have been used in the U.S.to assess green buildings.Thus,this paper aims to analyze 95 certified fire stations under the LEED-NC 2009 version(v3)that are located in the United States.A scorecard analysis(credits and points)of public data available serve as the foundation to describe the status of the green design and construction of these fire stations.The findings indicate that the points in the Material Resources(MR)category are achieved at the lowest rate compared to the other categories,on average 38%of 14 available points were earned.In addition,the points in the Energy and Atmosphere(EA)category are one of the lowest achievement rates,equal to 40.2%.The data also shows that 82%of LEED-certified fire stations belong to career or mostly career type,which are municipality fire departments funded by local governments.The significance of this study is to demonstrate the importance of both MR and EA categories for the design and construction phases of green fire stations. 展开更多

Studies investigating the benefits of green buildings can be approached by the affor-dance theory-the perceived properties of a thing that determine how it could pos-sibly be used.This study focuses on the sustainable communication and education that a green building should provide.By applying the affordance theory,we examined whether a LEED-certified university campus building effectively communicates green design and sustainability to its users and if so,then how?We employed a question-naire survey targeting campus users of a LEED-certified building by examining their awareness of the building’s LEED status and perception of green design elements at multiple spatial scales,as well as their general knowledge on green building topics.We collected 177 questionnaires,of which 153 were qualified for statistical analysis.The results suggested that the building itself can afford to promote awareness among users,but cannot afford to educate users on general green building knowledge.We found that building users perceived green design at different spatial scales,preferring either product or space-related design.Our results indicate that future design should continue promoting the use of educational signage,which was found to be the most effective communicator of sustainability.The communication of green design to users with different spatial preferences remains a future research focus.Further studies on the innovative use of green building design as effective communicators are needed to promote sustainability education among the building users. 展开更多

However, energy harvesting devices and power generators encompass a number of non-classical system behaviors or characteristics, such as delivering nondeterministic power density, and these would create hindrance for effectively utilizing the harvested energy. Previously, we have investigated new design methods and tools that are used to enable power adaptive computing and, particularly, catering non-deterministic voltage, which can efficiently utilize ambient energy sources. Also, we developed a co-optimization approach to maximize the computational efficiency from the harvested ambient energy. This paper will provide a review of these methods. Emerging technologies, such as 3D-IC, which would also enable new paradigm of green and high-performance computing, will be also discussed. 展开更多
