Based on the solution of a three layer slab waveguide, the wave number of guided modes has been expanded in series of one or two small parameters. One side cladded slab, two side cladded slab and two parallel cladded slab waveguide system are demonstrated to show how to use this essentially analytic method. We design and demonstrate a type of multiplexed hologram by nanoscatterers inside a dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide with guided-wave illuminations. The mode division multiplexed hologram(MDMH) is fulfilled by the scattering of guided waves to free space with respect to different modes. According to different mode numbers, these guided modes have different responses to the multiplexed hologram, and then give rise to different holographic images in reconstructions. In experiments, we show two kinds of MDMHs based on TM0∕TE0 and TE0∕TE1 modes as examples. Our approach could enrich the holography method that favors on-chip integration. 展开更多

We investigate the interface-guided mode of Lamb waves in a phononic crystal heterostructures plate, which is com- posed of two different semi-infinite phononic crystal (PC) plates. The interface-guided modes of the Lamb wave can be obtained by the lateral lattice slipping or by the interface longitudinal gliding. Significantly, it is observed that the condition to generate the interface-guided modes of the Lamb wave is more demanding than that of the studied fluid-fluid system. The interface-guided modes are strongly affected not only by the relative movement of the two semi-infinite PCs but also by the thickness of the PC plate. 展开更多

We proposed and experimentally investigated a two-ring-resonator composed planar hybrid metamaterial(MM), in which the spectra of guided mode resonance(GMR) and Fano resonance or EIT-like response induced by coherent interaction between MM resonance and GMR can be easily controlled by the size of the two rings in the terahertz regime.Furthermore, a four-ring-resonator composed MM for polarization-insensitive GMRs was demonstrated, where GMRs of both TE and TM modes are physically attributed to the diffraction coupling by two ±45° tilting gratings. Such kind of device has great potential in ultra-sensitive label-free sensors, filters, or slow light based devices. 展开更多

The multi-modes and disperse characteristics of torsional modes in pipes are investigated theoretically and experimentally. At all frequencies, both phase velocity and group velocity of the lowest torsional mode T(0,1) are constant and equal to shear wave velocity. T(0,1) mode at all frequencies is the fastest torsional mode. In the experiments, T(0,1) mode is excited and received in pipes using 9 thickness shear vibration mode piezoelectric ceramic elements. Furthermore, an artificial longitudinal defect of a 4 m long pipe is detected using T(0,1) mode at 50 kHz. Experimental results show that it is feasible for longitudinal defect detection in pipes using T(0,1) mode of ultrasonic guided waves. 展开更多

A broadband non-polarizing beam splitter (NPBS) operating in the telecommunication C+L band is designed by using the guided mode resonance effect of periodic silicon-on-insulator (SOI) elements. It is shown that this double layer SOI structure can provide ~50/50 beam ratio with the maximum divergences between reflection and transmission being less than 8% over the spectrum of 1.4μm-l.7 μm and i% in the telecommunication band for both TE and TM polarizations. The physical basis of this broadband non-polarizing property is on the simultaneous excitation of the TE and TM strong modulation waveguide modes near the designed spectrum band. Meanwhile, the electric field distributions for both TE and TM polarizations verify the resonant origin of spectrum in the periodic SOI structure. Furthermore, it is demonstrated with our calculations that the beam splitter proposed here is tolerant to the deviations of incident angle and structure parameters, which make it very easy to be fabricated with current IC technology. 展开更多

The unit cell of the proposed absorber consists of a graphene monolayer on a guided-mode resonant filter. The graphene absorber presents > 40% absorption at two resonance frequencies, which is attributed to the guided mode resonances with different mode numbers. The electric field intensity distribution is analyzed to disclose the physical mechanism of such a dual-band absorption effect. Furthermore,the influence of optical properties of graphene, including Fermi level and relaxation time, on the absorption spectra are investigated. Finally, the influence of geometric parameters on the absorption spectrum is studied, which will provide useful guidance for the fabrication of this absorber. We believe that the results may be useful for developing the next-generation graphene-based optoelectronic devices. 展开更多

In this paper, a new type of resonant Brewster filter (RBF) consisting of two homogenous layers and a single grating with an equal refractive index is presented. The properties are studied by using the plane waveguide method (PWM) and rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA). It is found that the variation of the grating thickness does not effectively change the position of the resonant wavelength, however it has a remarkable effect on the line width, and the resonant peak can be adjusted back to its original position by slightly tuning the grating period. Moreover, by simultaneously tuning the thicknesses of the homogeneous layers above and beneath the grating structure, multiple channels can also be obtained when the RBF is illuminated at the Brewster angle calculated with the effective medium theory (EMT) of subwavelength grating. The adjacent optical thickness for acquiring the multiple channels is about three-quarters of the resonant wavelength. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the line width at the operating resonant wavelength can be appreciably narrowed by tuning the thickness of the homogenous layer to its corresponding thickness without fine tuning the grating period or the thickness. Therefore, it is very useful for designing filters with different line widths at the desired wavelength. In addition, it is shown from our calculations that the symmetrical line feather can be obtained if the total optical thickness for the homogeneous layer meets the special condition. 展开更多

A broad band polarization-independent reflector working in the telecommunication C+L band is proposed using the guided mode resonance effect of a periodic surface relief element deposited by a layer of silicon medium. It is shown that this structure can provide high reflection (R 〉 99.5%) and wide angular bandwidth (θ≈ 20°, R 〉 98%) for both TE and TM polarizations over a wide spectrum band 1.5 μm-l.6 μm. Furthermore, it is found by rigorous coupled wave analysis that the polarization-independent reflector proposed here is tolerant of a deviation of grating thickness, which makes it very easy to fabricate in experiments. 展开更多

Dipole coupled nanomagnets controlled by the static Zeeman field can form various magnetic logic interconnects.However, the corner wire interconnect is often unreliable and error-prone at room temperature. In this study, we address this problem by making it into a reliable type with trapezoid-shaped nanomagnets, the shape anisotropy of which helps to offer the robustness. The building method of the proposed corner wire interconnect is discussed,and both its static and dynamic magnetization properties are investigated. Static micromagnetic simulation demonstrates that it can work correctly and reliably. Dynamic response results are reached by imposing an ac microwave field on the proposed corner wire. It is found that strong ferromagnetic resonance absorption appears at a low frequency. With the help of a very small ac field with the peak resonance frequency, the required static Zeeman field to switch the corner wire is significantly decreased by ~21 m T. This novel interconnect would pave the way for the realization of reliable and low power nanomagnetic logic circuits. 展开更多

The moving media theory is applied to a photonic confined structure which is a continuous dielectric slab waveguide with the uniaxial anisotropy and without the discrete translational symmetry.The moving effect not only brings about non-reciprocity to the whole photonic band structure in the co-moving and counter-moving directions,but also leads to the topological transition of local degenerate points within the band diagram.We demonstrate through calculation that the type-ⅡDirac point can be turned into type-ⅠDirac point when the uniaxial slab is moving over certain speed.Our results provide a new approach to regulate the topology of degeneracy for two-dimensional photonic bands in the continuous translational symmetry condition. 展开更多

The single-longitudinal-mode lasing characteristic is achieved by introducing the PC to the RWG laser. The triangle PC is etched on both sides of the ridge by photolithography and inductive coupled plasma (ICP) etching. The lasing spectra of the RWG lasers with and without the PC are studied, and the result shows that the PC purifies the longitudinal mode. The power per facet versus current and current-voltage characteristics have also been studied and compared. 展开更多

For L10-FePt films with strong perpendicular anisotropy covered by arrays of hexagonal close-packed polystyrene spheres (PSSs), fine structures are observed in magneto-optical Kerr rotation spectra in the visible spectral range. The reflection minima are found to be located at the same wavelengths as the Kerr rotation peaks. The Kerr rotation enhancement is attributed to the excitation of both the surface plasmon polariton in the dielectric PSS/metal interface and the guide waves (guide mode) in the PSS array. The two-dimensional PSSs/SiO2/FePt system exhibiting a tunable magneto-optical Kerr effect and a high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy will be helpful for designing and fabricating magneto-optics devices. 展开更多

The magnetic intensity distributions of these two peaks manifest that the narrow higher transmission enhancement peak was caused by guided mode resonance and the other wide low one was formed by surface plasmon resonance. Due to excitation and coupling of guided resonance mode in thin dielectric waveguide layer and surface plasmon mode on the interface between the waveguide and the metal substrate, double deep and narrow reflection spectrum dip can be obtained. This physical explanation is confirmed by the momentum matching conditions of resonance and the field distribution calculation. The unidirectional excitation of near-field optical modes is a fundamental prerequisite for many photonic applications,such as wireless power transfer and information communications.We experimentally construct all-electric Huygens and spin metasources and demonstrate anomalous unidirectional excitation of high-k hyperbolic modes in two types of hyperbolic metasurfaces.We use a Huygens metasource to study the unidirectional excitation of hyperbolic bulk modes in a planar hyperbolic metamaterial(HMM).Specifically,unidirectional excitation is the same as that in free space in the vertical direction,but opposite to that in free space in the horizontal direction.This anomalous unidirectional excitation is determined by the anisotropic HMM dispersion.In addition,we use a spin metasource to observe the anomalous photonic spin Hall effect in a planar hyperbolic waveguide.For a near-field source with a specific spin,the guide mode with a fixed directional wave vector is excited due to spin-momentum locking.Because the directions of momentum and energy flows in the HMM waveguide are opposite,the unidirectional excitation of hyperbolic guided modes is reversed.Our results not only uncover the sophisticated electromagnetic functionalities of metasources in the near-field but may also provide novel opportunities for the development of integrated optical devices. 展开更多

As a sensor, a minimum refractive index detectivity of 10^-5 is demonstrated while as a tunable filter, tunability range of few tens of nanometers with 2-nm bandwidth is presented. The optimum design is achieved by maximizing the evanescent field region in the analyte which maximizes the overlap integral. The device can be operated in reflection or transmission modes at normal incidence. It can also be operated at a single wavelength by measuring the angular profile of the light beam. 展开更多
