Pineapple industry in China has been damaged by water-heart fruit. The objective of this research is to clarify the mechanism underlying water-heart fruit of pineapple and find ways for preventing water-heart fruit. We found that water logging can cause water-heart pineapple. The longer the pineapple plants were water logged, the more fruits were found water heart. With the development of fruits, the fruits’ sensitivity to water logging increased. Spraying potassium sulfate onto the fruits after the plants are water logged can decrease the rate of pineapple water-heart. But this effect became less with the fruit development. When sucrose and its precursors in intracellular space were transferred into sink cells, hydrogen ions were required. Because of lacking hydrogen ions, sucrose and its precursors were stopped in intracellular space and seized water from cells. Water-heart fruit formed. If potassium can be gotten in intracellular space, the roles of hydrogen ions might be replaced with potassium ions. With the help of potassium ions, sucrose and its precursors were transported into sink cells and the water-heart symptoms alleviated.展开更多

This accumulation of EVLW may adversely affect ventilatory parameters. Lung compliance (LC), cardiac index (CI), blood arterial oxygen tension (PaO2), left atrial pressure (LAP)and EVLW were measured serially immediately postoperative in two groups of children after complete repair of congenital heart disease contrasted by their level of pulmonary blood flow: Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF, n=10, 4.6±1.9 years) and ventrvcular septal defect with pulmonary arterial hypertension (VSD+PAH, n=10, 5.4±2.0 years).Using a double indicator-dilution technique (DIDT) the EVLW peaked at the 16th hour postoperation in TOF group and at the 8 th hour postoperation inthe VSD with PAH group. During the first 24 hours after surgery the EVLW was consistently higher in the VSD with PAH group (P【0.01). There was a negative correlation between the EVLW and LC, CI and PaO2 and no correlation between the EVLW and LAP. In three hypoxemic patients of the VSD with PAH group the LC deteriorated while the EVLW was elevated. After treatment with positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) the hypoxemia corrected as the LC increased and the EVLW decreased, with no change in the CI. Thus, measurement of EVLW provides a sensitive method for explaining changes in LC, that may lead to a more rational adjustment of mechanical ventilator parameters.展开更多

Twenty healthy adults were randomly allocated to consume either 330 ml of No. 1 Rosemary water or plain carbonated water. They then completed a series of subjective measures and cognitive tasks including a fifteen-minute session on a stress inducing multi-tasking framework, followed by a second completion of the subjective measures. Heart rate and blood pressure were monitored throughout the procedure. Given the pilot nature of the study, analysis of the data eschewed significance testing for the calculation of Cohen’s d measure of effect sizes. These revealed a number of small enhancement effects on cognition, consistent with those found previously for the inhalation of the aroma of Rosemary essential oil, and oral administration of dried herb. Of particular interest here are the reduced subjective evaluations of stress, and the blunted physiological reactivity noted for heart rate and blood pressure, which represent novel findings in this area. Taken together the data suggest further investigation of this product is warranted with regard to its potential beneficial properties.展开更多

Usually, thermal therapy requires an infrared dry sauna. However, it is difficult for small clinics to acquire such an expensive and extensive system. The author assessed the efficacy of its substitution with hot water bottles. Moreover, there are no prior studies demonstrating the efficacy of thermal therapy in hemodialysis patients with chronic heart failure. Methods: The author evaluated plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels in 98 hemodialysis patients in a clinic. A total of nine patients whose BNP levels were more than 500 pg/mL agreed to be enrolled in this study and received thermal therapy using hot water bottles. Results: Plasma BNP levels, a potential marker for CHF, tended to decrease (891 ± 448 pg/mL to 680 ± 339 pg/mL), but the difference was not significant (P = 0.0845). The oral temperature changed from 36.44℃± 0.45℃ to 37.04℃ ± 0.48℃ (+0.597℃, P < 0.0001). No side effects were experienced during the therapy. Moreover, most patients had an improvement in their symptoms and the ability to perform activities of daily living. Conclusion: Thermal therapy using hot water bottles is very safe and tends to reduce plasma BNP levels in hemodialysis patients with CHF.展开更多
