A simulation program was developed to evaluate the temperature histories of the heat transfer fluid (HTF) and the phase change material at any axial location during the charging period. The results of the model were validated by comparison with experimental results of temperature profiles of HTF and PCM. The model was also used to investigate the effect of porosity, Stanton number, Stefan number and Peclet number on CTES system performance. The results showed that increase in porosity contributes to a higher rate of energy storage. However, for a given geometry and heat transfer coefficient, the mass of PCM charged in the unit decreases as the increase in porosity. The St number as well as the Ste number is also influential in the performance of the unit. The model is a convenient and more suitable method to determine the heat transfer characteristics of CTES system. The results reported are much useful for designing CTES system.展开更多

This paper describes an approach to develop a latent heat storage system using middle-temperature waste heat (~100oC - 200oC) from factories. Direct contact melting and solidification behavior between a heat-transfer fluid (oil) and a latent heat storage material mixture were observed. The mixture consisted of mannitol and erythritol (Cm = 70 mass %, Ce = 30 mass %) as a phase-change material (PCM). The weight of the PCM was 3.0 kg and the flow rate of the oil, foil, was 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 kg/min. To decrease the solidified height of the PCM mixture during the solidification process, a perforated partition plate was installed in the PCM region in the heat storage vessel. PCM coated oil droplets were broken by the perforated partition plate, preventing the solidified height of the PCM from increasing. The solidification and melting processes were repeated using metal fiber. It was found that installing the metal fiber was more effective than installing the perforated partition plate to prevent the flow out problem of the PCM.展开更多

First, the fabrication process of miniaturized phase change heat sink is investigated, upon which all parts of the heat sink are fabricated including main-body and end-cover of the heat sink, the formation of three-dimensional boiling structures at the evaporation end, the sintering of the wick, and the encapsulation of high power LED phase change heat sink. Subsequently, with the assistance of the developed testing system, heat transfer performance of the heat sink is tested under the condition of natural convection, upon which the influence of thermal load and working medium on the heat transfer performance is investigated. Finally, the heat transfer performance of the developed miniaturized phase change heat sink is compared with that of metal solid heat sink. Results show that the developed miniaturized phase change heat sink presents much better heat transfer performance over traditional metal solid heat sink, and is suitable for the packaging of high power LED.展开更多

Both the C-GST films without and with a thin SiO2 capping layer(C-GST and C-GST/SiO2) are deposited for comparison. Large differences are observed between C-GST and C-GST/SiO2 films in resistance-temperature, x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,Raman spectra, data retention capability and optical band gap measurements. In the C-GST film, resistancetemperature measurement reveals an unusual smooth decrease in resistance above 110℃ during heating. Xray diffraction result has excluded the possibility of phase change in the C-GST film below 170℃. The x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experimental result reveals the evolution of Te chemical valence because of the carbon oxidation during heating. Raman spectra further demonstrate that phase changes from an amorphous state to the hexagonal state occur directly during heating in the C-GST film. The quite smooth decrease in resistance is believed to be related with the formation of Te-rich GeTe4-n Gen(n = 0, 1) units above 110℃ in the C-GST film. The oxidation of carbon is harmful to the C-GST phase change properties.展开更多

The moving heat source model and the Green function method are introduced to deal with the cryopreservation process of in vitro biomaterials. Exact solutions for the 3-D temperature transients of tissues under various boundary conditions, such as totally convective cooling, totally fixed temperature cooling and a hybrid between them on tissue surfaces, are obtained. Furthermore, the cryosurgical process in living tissues subject to freezing by a single or multiple cryoprobes is also analytically solved. A closed-form analytical solution to the bioheat phase change process is derived by considering contributions from blood perfusion heat transfer, metabolic heat generation, and heat sink of a cryoprobe. The present method is expected to have significant value for analytically solving complex bioheat transfer problems with phase change.展开更多

In this paper, the visualization results of thermo-fluid behavior on the surface of the wick with microscopic infrared thermography were reported. In this study, 2 different samples that simulated a part of wick in the evaporator were used. The wicks were made by different two materials: polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and stainless steel (SUS). The pore radii of PTFE wick and SUS wick are 1.2 μm and 22.5 μm. The difference of thermo-fluid behavior that was caused by the difference of material was investigated. These two materials include 4 different properties: pore radius, thermal conductivity, permeability and porosity. In order to investigate the effect of the thermal conductivity on wick’s operating mode, the phase diagram on the q-keff plane was made. Based on the temperature line profiles, two operating modes: mode of heat conduction and mode of convection were observed. The effective thermal conductivity of the porous media has strong effect on the operating modes. In addition, the difference of heat leak through the wick that was caused by the difference of the material was discussed.展开更多

In this paper, a new optimization approach called algorithms of changes (AOC) is proposed for design and optimization of the shell-tube heat exchanger. This new optimization technique is developed based on the concept of the book of changes (I Ching) which is one of the oldest Chinese classic texts. In AOC, the hexagram operations in I Ching are generalized to binary string case and an iterative process, which imitates the I Ching inference, is defined. Before applying the AOC to the heat exchanger design problem, the new optimization method is examined by the benchmark optimization problems such as the global optimization test functions and the travelling salesman problem (TSP). Based on the TSP results, the AOC is shown to be superior to the genetic algorithms (GA). The AOC is then used in the optimal design of heat exchanger. The shell inside diameter, tube outside diameter, and baffles spacing are treated as the design (or optimized) variables. The cost of the heat exchanger is arranged as the objective function. For the heat exchanger design problem, the results show that the AOC is comparable to the GA method. Both methods can find the optimal solution in a short period of time.展开更多

文摘In view of the high temperature problem faced by mining activities, the coordinated mining of ore deposit and geothermal energy is a solution in line with the concept of green mining. The layered backfill body with finned double-pipe heat exchanger continuously exchanges heat with the surrounding thermal environment, which plays an effective role in gathering geothermal energy. In this paper, the heat storage process of each layered backfill body under different boundary conditions is simulated by Fluent. The results show the heat storage characteristic of layered backfill body can be significantly improved by adding fins to the double-pipe heat exchanger. On the whole, the heat storage effect of bottom layer backfill body(BLBB)is the best. The total heat storage capacity of top layer backfill body(TLBB),middle layer backfill body(MLBB)and BLBB with the finned double-pipe heat exchanger is 666.3 kJ,662.2 kJ,1003.0 kJ;1639.0 kJ,1760.8 kJ,1911.2 kJ and 1731.1 kJ,1953.3 kJ,1962.8 kJ respectively at 1 h,8 h and 24 h.This study explores the law of heat storage of layered backfill body under different boundary conditions and also expands the idea for layered backfill body to efficiently accumulate geothermal energy.
文摘This work investigates the transient behaviour of a phase change material based cool thermal energy storage (CTES) system comprised of a cylindrical storage tank filled with encapsulated phase change materials (PCMs) in spherical container integrated with an ethylene glycol chiller plant. The results reported are much useful for designing CTES system.
文摘After conducting a critical survey of the different categories of existing heat exchangers, the results of several experiments about the behaviour of a two-phase current in an open channel are reported. The results confirm the complexity of the problems induced in heat exchangers by flow maldistribution, especially when two-phase flows are considered in multi-channel systems. It is shown that severe misalignment of heat exchangers can lead to a loss of economic performance of more than 25%.Improper distribution of fluid flow causes longer fluid coils to form, and the liquid cochlea can eventually occupy a large space, thereby reducing heat transfer and disrupting the considered biphasic system. The use of a small diameter distribution pipe with properly spaced outlet holes seems to be a promising approach to fix many of these issues. It is found that the current distribution in the channels,in addition to the header pressure distribution, also depends on factors such as the geometry and the initial flow regime in the header.

文摘The conventional solar heating floor system contains a big water tank to store energy in the day time for heating at night, which takes much building space and is very heavy. In order to reduce the water tank volume even to cancel the tank,a novel structure of integrated water pipe floor heating system using shape-stabilized phase change materials(SSPCM)for thermal energy storage was developed.A numerical model was developed to analyze the performance of SSPCM floor heating system under the intermittent heating condition, which was verified by our experimental data. The thermal performance of the heating system and the effects of various factors on it were analyzed numerically. The factors including phase transition temperature, heat of fusion, thermal conductivity of SSPCM and thermal conductivity of the decoration material were analyzed. The results show that tm and kd are the most import influencing factors on the thermal performance of SSPCM floor heating system, since they determine the heat source temperature and thermal resistance between SSPCM plates and indoor air, respectively.Hm should be large to store enough thermal energy in the day time for nighttimes heating. The effects of kp can be ignored in this system. The SSPCM floor heating system has potential of making use of the daytime solar energy for heating at night efficiently in various climates when its structure is properly designed.

文摘A novel phase change heat sink was fabricated for packaging cooling of high power light emitting diode (LED). 3D structures as enhanced boiling structure in the evaporation surface were composed of a spiral micro-groove along circumferential direction and radial micro-grooves which were processed by ploughing-extrusion (P-E) and stamping, respectively. Meanwhile, the cycle power of refrigerant was supplied by wick of sintered copper powder on internal surface of phase change heat sink. Operational characteristics were tested under different heat loads and refrigerants. The experimental results show that phase change heat sink is provided with a good heat transfer capability and the temperature of phase change heat sink reaches 86.8 ℃ under input power of 10 W LED at ambient temperature of 20 ℃.
文摘Today, latent heat storage technology has advanced to allow reuse of waste heat in the middle-temperature range. It was found that installing the metal fiber was more effective than installing the perforated partition plate to prevent the flow out problem of the PCM.

文摘In view of the limitations of solid metal heat sink in the heat dissipation of high power light emitting diode (LED), a kind of miniaturized phase change heat sink is developed for high power LED packaging. Results show that the developed miniaturized phase change heat sink presents much better heat transfer performance over traditional metal solid heat sink, and is suitable for the packaging of high power LED.

文摘We elucidate the importance of a capping layer on the structural evolution and phase change properties of carbondoped Ge2 Sb2 Te5(C-GST) films during heating in air. The oxidation of carbon is harmful to the C-GST phase change properties.

文摘Analytically solving a three-dimensional (3-D) bioheat transfer problem with phase change during a freezing process is extremely difficult but theoretically important. The present method is expected to have significant value for analytically solving complex bioheat transfer problems with phase change.

文摘At present, only a single modification method is adopted to improve the shortcomings of erythritol(ET)as a phase change material(PCM).Compared with a single modification method, the synergistic effect of multiple modification methods can endow ET with comprehensive performance to meet the purpose of package, supercooling reduction, and enhancement of thermal conductivity. In this work,we innovatively combine graphene oxide(GO)nanosheet modified melamine foam(MF)and polyaniline(PANI)to construct a novel ET-based PCM by blending and porous material adsorption modification.PANI as the nucleation center can enhance the crystallization rate, thereby reducing the supercooling of ET.Meanwhile,GO@MF foam can not only be used as a porous support material to encapsulate ET but also as a heat conduction reinforcement to improve heat storage and release rate.As a result, the supercooling of GO@MF/PANI@ET(GMPET)composite PCM decreases from 91.2℃ of pure ET to 57.9℃ and its thermal conductivity(1.58 W·m^(-1)·K^(-1))is about three times higher than that of pure ET(0.57 W·m^(-1)·K^(-1)).Moreover,after being placed at 140℃ for 2 h,there is almost no ET leakage in the GMPET composite PCM,and the mass loss ratio is less than 0.75%.In addition, the GMPET composite PCM displays a high melting enthalpy of about 259 J·g^(-1) and a high initial mass loss temperature of about 198℃.Even after the 200th cycling test, the phase transition temperature and the latent heat storage capacity of the GMPET PCM all remain stable. This work offers an effective and promising strategy to design ET-based composite PCM for the field of energy storage.
文摘Loop Heat Pipe (LHP) performance strongly depends on the performance of a wick that is porous media inserted in an evaporator. In addition, the difference of heat leak through the wick that was caused by the difference of the material was discussed.

文摘Heat exchangers are widely used in the process engineering such as the chemical industries, the petroleum industries, and the HVAC applications etc. An optimally designed heat exchanger cannot only help the optimization of the equipment size but also the reduction of the power consumption. Both methods can find the optimal solution in a short period of time.
文摘In the present work, effects of various heat transfer fluids on the discharging performance of a phase change material(PCM) included cylindrical container are numerically assessed during forced convection. The heat transfer fluid air, hydrogen, water and nanofluid with alumina particles are used and the the geometric variation of the PCM embedded region is also considered. The finite element method is used as the solver.Dynamic features of heat exchange with various phases are explored for different heat transfer fluid types,Reynolds number(between 100 and 300) and PCM embedded region geometric variation(h_(x)between 0.01 d_(1) and 0.65 d_(1),hybetween 0.1 h_(1) and 0.4 h_(1)).It is observed that discharging time is significantly influenced by the heat transfer fluid type while full phase transition time for air is obtained as more than 10 times when hydrogen is utilized as heat transfer fluid. The best performance is achieved with nanofluid. When the PCM integrated region size is reduced, discharging time is generally reduced while due to the form of the geometry, vortex formation is established in the PCM region. This results in performance degeneration at the highest radius and height of the inner cylinder.Discharging time increases by about 12% when radius of the inner cylinder is increased from h_(x)=0.35 d_(1) to h_(x)=0.45 d_(1).Dynamic features of PCM temperature and liquid fraction are affected with Reynolds number while discharging time is reduced by about 48% when configurations with the lowest and highest Reynolds number are compared.

文摘A two-dimensional model for freezing and thawing phase change heat transfer in biological tissue embedded with two cryoprobes was established. In this model, the blood vessels were considered as tree-like branched fractal network, and the effective flow rate and effective thermal conductivity of blood were obtained by fractal method. The temperature distribution and ice crystal growth process in biological tissue embedded with two cryoprobes during freezing-thawing process were numerically simulated. The results show that the growth velocity of ice crystal in freezing process from 200 to 400 s is more rapid than that from 400 to 600 s. Thawing process of frozen tissue occurs in the regions around cryoprobes tips and tissue boundary simultaneously, and the phase interfaces are close to each other until ice crystal melts completely. The distance of two cryoprobes has a more profound effect on the temperature distribution in freezing process at 400 s than at 800 s.
文摘It is believed that it is going to be a sizeable mismatch between supply and demand when it comes to renewable resources.Lately, researchers are on course to compensate for the unpredictabilityof such resources by the employment of phase change materials(PCMs).Having multiple advantages,PCMs generally suffer from inadequate thermal conductivity which causes prolonged transition procedures. To tackle this issue, this study is fixated on two parameterswhich are linked to fins addition and porous media incorporation in a melting process within a triple concentric tube heat exchanger(TCTHX).The results provided by multiple cases underlined the significance of natural convection in the bare system, although finned and copper-metal-foam cases outshine buoyancy forces by roughly 45%and 97%,respectively.Material is a major determent when it comes to the selection of porous media as Al_(2)O_(3) registered the weakest performance among SiC,Ni and Cu,however,it managed to speed up the process by 75%which still is much higher than the finned system, implying that porous media is of higher priority over fins. The best scenario transpiredwhile fins and copper metal foam were integrated as 26%and 97%soars in efficacy have been obtained compared to individual incorporation of porous media and fins, respectively.
