The high temperature oxidation behaviour of as-cast and heat-treated high-chromium white cast iron was studied by gravimetric means at 650 ℃ in atmospheres that included dry air and a mixture of dry air and water vapour. For both environmental and material conditions, the oxidation rate of the alloys was represen ted by parabolic trends and the oxidation phenomenon was more obvious when the samples were oxidised in water vapour. Water vapour also influenced the chemical composition of the oxides formed in the alloy and under this condi tion, the oxide scale formed on the alloy contained the oxides FeCr2O4 , (Fe,Cr)3O4 and (Fe,Cr)2 O3. In contrast, the alloys exposed to dry air conditions only experienced the formation of FeCr2O4 and (Fe,Cr)2O3. It was found that the presence of water vapour and the chromium content of the alloys increased the oxidation rate by a mechanism that involved chromium depletion of the oxide as a result of hydroxide formation. The differences observed in the oxi- dation behaviour of the alloy are discussed in terms of the composition of the oxidant atmosphere and the metallurgi cal condition of the specimens.展开更多

Although the amount of chrome in these materials provides high wear and corrosion resistances, it makes their machinability difficult. This study presents an application of the grey relational analysis based on the Taguchi method in order to optimize chrome ratio, cutting speed, feed rate, and cutting depth for the resultant cutting force (Fr) and surface roughness (Ra) when hard turning high chrome cast iron with a cubic boron nitride (CBN) insert. The effect levels of machining parameters on Fr and Ra were examined by an analysis of variance (ANOVA). A grey relational grade (GRG) was calculated to simultaneously minimize Fr and Ra. The ANOVA results based on GRG indicated that the feed rate, followed by the cutting depth, was the main parameter and contributed to respo ses. Optimal levels of parameters were found when the chrome ratio, cutting speed, feed rate, and cutting depth were 12%, 100m/min, 0.05mm/r, and 0.1mm, respectively, based on the multiresponse optimization results obtained by considering the maximum signal to noise (SIN) ratio of GRG. Confirmation results were verified by calculating the confidence level within the interval width.展开更多

Interfacial bond quality and hot deformation behaviour of the laminate were studied by mierostructural characterisation and mechanical tests. Experi- mental results show that the metallurgical bond between the constituent metals was achieved under the proposed bonding conditions without discernible defects and the formation of interlayer or intermetallic layer along the inter- face. The interfacial bond quality is excellent since no deterioration occurred around the interface which was deformed by Vickers indentation and compression test at room temperature with parallel loading to the interface. After well cladding by the LCS, the brittle HCCI can be severely deformed (about 57 % of reduction) at high temperature with crack-free. This significant improvement should be attributed to the decrease of crack sensitivity due to stress relief by soft claddings and enhanced flow property of the HCCI by simultaneous deformation with the LCS.展开更多
