The purpose of this study is to explain misunderstanding concerned with the uses of silence in conversations situated in different cultural backgrounds, and then give possible methods to avoid it. The explanation is mainly based on the two categories related to the context posed by Edward Hall: high-context culture & low-context culture. In this part, the study also contrasts distinct verbal styles in America & Japan, in addition, it analyses different attitudes towards silence from three aspects: traditional value, religion and power distance. As an important means of cultural transmission,documentaries are a powerful tool to make known the five thousand years of Chinese civilization to people all over the world.The“Wild China”of BBC version,popular among...As an important means of cultural transmission,documentaries are a powerful tool to make known the five thousand years of Chinese civilization to people all over the world.The“Wild China”of BBC version,popular among the great majority of overseas audience,serves as a successful carrier of Chinese culture export.Based on the theory of low-context and high-context culture,this paper uses the method of text analysis and focuses on the study of the texts in the Chinese and English versions of“Wild China”and explores the differences in the texts in terms of content and rhythm.The purpose of this study is to avoid cultural misunderstanding and optimize communication effect.Findings of this study show that against the background of low-context(English)and high-context(Chinese)culture,the English version has a good sense of rhythm,uses rhetoric for vivid description,expresses ideas directly,and provides explanation for phenomena through narrating or telling a story.But Chinese version has plainer descriptions,uses more euphemistic or abstract words,analyzes phenomena in less detail and narrates more formally.So,it is suggested that in translating texts into English,concepts need to be made accessible,logical and direct with more explanation,more rhetoric,more objective evaluation,and less pursuit of artistic abstraction.These communication strategies conforming to low-context culture can help overseas audience accept Chinese culture more easily.展开更多

It is hoped that the paper can help readers get an in-depth comprehension of Hall's theory of high-context and low-context culture and discover some invisible conflicts between China and the West and finally raise people's consciousness of cultural conflicts and ways of handling the conflicts. Hereafter, more and more social scientists come to realize the importance of this concept on the thorough understanding of the crossculture discrepancy. This article compares the difference between Chinese(representative of high- context culture) and English(representative of low-context culture) in terms of verbal communication patterns. In addition to a discussion of students' common difficulties and inappropriate habits in writing resulting from their mother- tongue and Chinese thinking- mode, it offers some constructive suggestions for students concerning their instruction of writing and aims to achieve good results in the English writing test. It's proved that degradation treatment is necessary and effective in English-writing by using some direct, concrete and vivid words to achieve the effect of veracity and proper statement.展开更多
