It was found that the iron nodularising potential(Mg, Ce, La content) and whether the mould coatings contained S, or were capable of desulphurizing were important factors. These moulds have S in the PTSA binder, which aggravates graphite degeneration in the surface layer, depending strongly on the Mgres with lower Mgres increasing the layer thickness. The application of a mould coating strongly influenced graphite deterioration in the surface layer of castings. It either promoted graphite degeneration to less compact morphologies when using S-bearing coatings, or conversely, limited the surface layer thickness using desulphurization type coatings. Independently of the S-source at the metal – mould interface, the presence of sulphur had an adverse effect on graphite quality at the surface of Mg-treated irons, but its negative effect could also reach the graphite phase within the casting section. If the coatings employed desulphurization materials, such as Mg O, or a mixture(Ca O + Mg O + Talc) or Mgbearing Fe Si, they protected the graphite shape, improving graphite nodularity, at the metal – mould interface, and so decreased the average layer thickness in FRS-PTSA moulds. Fe Si Mg was highly efficient in minimizing the casting skin by improving graphite nodularity. It is presumed that the Mg O or(Mg O + Ca O + Talc) based coatings acted to remove any S released by the mould media. The Mg-Fe Si coatings also reacted with S from the mould but additionally supplemented the Mg nodularising potential prior to solidification. This dual activity is achievable with coatings containing active magnesium derived from fine Mg-Fe Si materials.展开更多

By using ordinary EDM machine tool and kerosene fluid, a hard ceramic layer can be created on the workpiece surface with Ti or other compressed powder electrode in a certain condition. This new revolutionary method is called Electrical Discharge Coating (EDC). The process of EDC begins with electrode wear during EDM,then a kind of hard carbide is created through the thermal and chemical reaction between the worn electrode material and the carbon particle decomposed from kerosene fluid under high temperature. The carbide is piled up on a workpiece quickly and becomes a hard layer of ceramic about 20 μm in several minutes. This paper studies the principle and process of EDC systemically by using Ti powder green compact electrode. In order to obtain a layer of compact ceramic film, it is very important to select proper electric pulse parameters, such as pulse width, pulse interval, peak current. Meantime, the electrode materials and its forming mode will effect the machining surface quality greatly. This paper presents a series of experiment results to study the EDC process by adopt different technology parameters. Experiments and analyses show that a compact TiC ceramic layer can be created on the surface of metal workpiece. The hardness of ceramic layer is more 3 times higher than the base body, and the hardness changes gradiently from surface to base body. The method will have a great future because many materials can be easily added to the electrode and then be coated on the workpiece surface. Gearing the parameters ceramic can be created with different thickness. The switch between deposition and removal process is carried out easily by changing the polarity, thus the gear to the thickness and shape of the composite ceramic layer is carried out easily. This kind of composite ceramic layer will be used to deal with the surface of the cutting tools or molds possibly, in order to lengthen their life. It also can be found wide application in the fields of surface repairing and strengthening of the ship or aircraft.展开更多

This innovative SSC, different from the traditional SSC, was purely produced with a ternary mixture of three industrial by-products of ground granulated blast furnace slag, low calcium Class F fly ash and circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) fly ash and was denoted as SFC-SSC (super-sulfated cement made by mixture of slag, Class F fly ash and CFBC fly ash). Experimental results showed that the combination of a fixed amount of 15 wt.% of CFBC fly ash with various ratios of Class F fly ash to slag could be used to produce the hardened SCCs with high 28-day compressive strengths (41.8 - 65.6 MPa). Addition of Class F fly ash led to the resulting SCCs with lowered price and preferable engineering properties, and thus it was considered as state-of-the-art method to drive such type of concrete towards sustainable construction materials.展开更多

From August 2013, the first irradiation testing of coated particle fuel was begun to demonstrate and qualify TRISO fuel for use in the VHTR in HANARO (high-flux advanced neutron application reactor) at KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute). This experiment is currently undergoing under an atmosphere of a mixed inert gas without on-line temperature monitoring and control combined with on-line fission product monitoring of the sweep gas. The irradiation device contains two test rods, one contains nine fuel compacts and the other five compacts and eight graphite specimens. Each compact has 263 coated particles. After a peak bum-up of about 4% and a peak fast neutron fluence of about 1.7 × 1021 n/cm2, PIE (post irradiation examination) will be carried out at KAERI's irradiated material examination facility. This paper describes the characteristics of coated particle fuels, and the design of the test rod and irradiation device for the coated particle fuels, and discusses the technical results of irradiation testing at HANARO.展开更多
