In situ generation of oxyanions-decorated cobalt(nickel)oxyhydroxide catalyst with high corrosion resistance for stable and efficient seawater oxidation

The development of efficient and robust anode materials for stable alkaline seawater electrolysis is severely limited by chlorine evolution reaction and chloride corrosion.Here,the sulfur-doped cobalt-nickel bimetallic phosphides(CoNiPS)are specifically designed as a pre-catalyst for navigating a surface reconstruction to fabricate the anions(PO^(3-)_(4) and SO^(2-)_(4))-decorated Co(Ni)OOH catalyst(R-CoNiPS)with exceptional durability and high activity for stable alkaline seawater oxidation(ASO).Various experiment techniques together with theoretical simulations both demonstrate that the in situ-generated PO^(3-)_(4) and SO^(2-)_(4) anions on catalyst surface can improve the oxygen evolution reaction(OER)activity,regulating and stabilizing the catalytic active species Co(Ni)OOH,as well as make a critical role in inhibiting the adsorp-tion of chloride ions and extending the service life of electrode.Therefore,this R-CoNiPS electrode exhi-bits superb OER activity toward AsO and stands out among the non-precious ASO electrocatalysts reported recently,requiring low overpotentials of 420 and 440 mV to attain large current densities of 500 and 1000 mA cm^(-2) in an alkaline natural seawater electrolyte,respectively.Particularly,the catalyst displays a negligible chloride corrosion at room temperature during ASO operation(>200 h)at 500 mA cm^(-2).This work opens up a new viewpoint for designing high-activity and durable electrocata-lystsforseawaterelectrolysis. 展开更多

Seawater splitting is a prospective approach to yield renewable and sustainable hydrogen energy.Complex preparation processes and poor repeatability are currently considered to be an insuperable impediment to the promotion of the large-scale production and application of electrocatalysts.Avoiding the use of intricate instruments,corrosion engineering is an intriguing strategy to reduce the cost and presents considerable potential for electrodes with catalytic performance.An anode comprising quinary AlCoCrFeNi layered double hydroxides uniformly decorated on an AlCoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy is proposed in this paper via a one-step corrosion engineering method,which directly serves as a remarkably active catalyst for boosting the oxygen evolution reaction(OER)in alkaline seawater.Notably,the best-performing catalyst exhibited oxygen evolution reaction activity with overpotential values of 272.3 and 332 mV to achieve the current densities of 10 and100 mA·cm^(-2),respectively.The failure mechanism of the obtained catalyst was identified for advancing the development of multicomponent catalysts. 展开更多

In view of their excellent mechanical properties, workability and heat treatment characteristics, MDN 138 & MDN 250 have been widely used in missile, rocket and aerospace industries. With light weight and high performance characteristics HE 20 aluminium alloy acts as an important material in defence and aerospace applications. The galvanic corrosion behaviour of the metal combinations HE 20 / MDN 138 and HE 20 / MDN 250, with 1:1 area ratio, has been studied in natural seawater using the open well facility of CECRI's Offshore Platform at Tuticorin for a year. The open circuit potentials of MDN 138, MDN 250 and HE 20 of the individual metal, the mixed potential and galvanic current of the couples HE 20 / MDN 138 and HE 20 / MDN 250 were periodically monitored throughout the study period. The calcareous deposits on MDN 138 and MDN 250 were analysed using XRD. The results of the study reveal that that HE 20 has offered required amount of protection to MDN 138 & MDN 250. 展开更多

This study aims at providing systematically insights to clarify the impact of cathodic polarization on the stress corrosion cracking(SCC)behavior of 21 Cr2 NiMo steel.Slow-strain-rate tensile tests demonstrated that 21 Cr2 NiMo steel is highly sensitive to hydrogen embrittlement at strong cathodic polarization.The lowest SCC susceptibility occurred at-775 mV vs.SCE,whereas the SCC susceptibility was remarkably higher at potentials below-950 mV vs.SCE.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and electron backscattered diffraction(EBSD)revealed that the cathodic potential decline caused a transition from transgranular to intergranular mode in the fracture path.The intergranular mode transformed from bainite boundaries separation to prior austenitic grain boundaries separation under stronger cathodic polarization.Furthermore,corrosion pits promoted the nucleation of SCC cracks.In conclusion,with the decrease in the applied potential,the SCC mechanism transformed from the combination of hydrogen embrittlement and anodic dissolution to typical hydrogen embrittlement. 展开更多

Seawater pumped storage systems have bright prospect for energy storage in the coming years.The operational conditions of seawater pumped storage system are complex and harsh,where metal materials suff er from severe general and local corrosion.The corrosion behavior of Q235B carbon steel in simulated seawater pumped storage system under operational conditions was studied by potentiodynamic polarization,cyclic potentiodynamic polarization,and scanning electron microscope(SEM).The results confi rm that the working pressure aff ected the corrosion resistance of Q235B carbon steel during the whole immersion period.The pressure promoted the electrochemical reaction of corrosion process and the corrosion rate increased with pressure at the initial immersion period.However,the stable rust layer formed after longtime immersion at diff erent pressures increased the corrosion resistance of carbon steel,and decreased the corrosion degree of carbon steel.Meanwhile,the working pressure aff ected the pitting corrosion behavior of Q235B carbon steel during the whole immersion period.The pitting corrosion potential was more negative and the tendency of pitting corrosion was higher at 4 MPa during the whole immersion period.However,pressure also accelerated the formation rate of protective rust layer on the steel surface.Q235B carbon steel has higher susceptibility to pitting corrosion at 4 MPa in the static seawater. 展开更多

As a material with good corrosion resistance,5083 aluminum alloy has a great application prospect in marine environment.In this work,the corrosion characteristics of 5083 aluminum alloy in seawater containing phosphate were investigated with Potentiodynamic Polarization,Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS),Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM),Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy Analysis (EDSA),X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Laser Confocal Microscope.The results indicated that the effects of phosphate in seawater were two-fold.Firstly,phosphate slightly accelerated the corrosion of 5083 in seawater in the early stage of corrosion.HPO_4~(2-)competed with OH~-in the adsorption process on the alloy surface,which weakened the contact between OH~-and Al~(3+)near the interface of the alloy,and inhibited the formation as well as the self-repair of the passive film,thus accelerating the activation dissolution process.Compared with the natural seawater,the charge transfer resistance of 5083 in the seawater containing phosphate decreased faster during the early stage of corrosion,and the corrosion current density i_(corr) was higher in seawater containing phosphate.On the other hand,the addition of phosphate would not affect the cluster distribution of the second phase of 5083 in seawater,but it changed the composition of the corrosion product layer and had an obvious inhibitory effect on the local corrosion of 5083 in seawater.After 16-day exposure,shallower and more sparsely distributed pits could be observed on the derusted surface of 5083 in the seawater containing phosphate,and the pitting coefficient in the seawater containing phosphate was significantly lower than that in natural seawater.The reduction of pitting tendency could be realized mainly through two ways.First,the HPO_4~(2-)adsorbed on the surface of the passive film in the early stage of corrosion and repeled the corrosive anions such as Cl~-.Second,phosphate participated in the construction of the Ca HPO_4 precipitation film,which acted as a barrier and protection. 展开更多

The regulation of localized corrosion of 2 kinds of copper and 17 kinds of copper alloys exposed in seawater of Qingdao, Zhoushan, Yulin and Xiamen for 16 years has been studied. Results show that during immersion copper alloys suffer from pitting corrosion due to high temperature and marine living adhesion at Yulin, and to the higher velocity of seawater containing sand at Zhoushan. However, the seawater of Xiamen inhibits the pitting (corrosion) of copper alloys. No pitting corrosion is observed on copper alloy plates tested there. The copper alloys suffer from more serious pitting corrosion in the tide zone than that in the immersion zone at Qingdao after long time exposure. 展开更多

The corrosion behavior of a zinc-baased alloy (compared with that of pure zinc) coating was studied in this research on the electrochemical corrosion behavior of hot dip coating in artificial seawater. The electrochemical parameters of these two hot dip coatings were measured by the galvanostatic method and accelerated corrosion test. The two coatings showed uniform corrosion, but the corrosion of the pure zinc coating was actively sustained continuously. The corrosion of the zinc-based alloy coating was very slow because of the formation of a stable anti-corrosion membrane. The corrosion mechanisms of these two coatings were also compared by the weak polarization curve fitting method. The corrosion of the zinc-based alloy coating is typical of that in natural passive corrosion system. 展开更多

The investigations on the effect of the initial surface and microstructure on the seawater corrosion of Cu Ni alloy tubes were carried out by processing, electrochemical methods and natural seawater exposure as well as SEM. Deformation had more impact on the final microstructure of the tubes than the annealing time did, and at the deformation of 32% and annealing temperature 550~600 ℃ for 1 h the tubes was completely recrystallized microstructure. As increasing the volume fraction of recrystallization, the homogeneity of microstructure and the corrosion resistance increased. The residual carbon film produced on the inner surface of the tubes during the processing, had higher corrosion potential than the alloy substrate and good electronic conductivity, so accelerating the dissolution of the substrate in seawater, and the non protective and loose corrosion product film formed. Immersed in natural seawater, the tubes of incomplete recrystallization, consisting of deformed and recrystallized grains, displayed intergranular corrosion, which resulted from corrosion micro cells built between deformed and recrystallized grains and the preferable transportation of electrons on the boundaries of both the grains. In contrast, the recrystallized alloy tubes formed the uniform and compact corrosion product film under which no corrosion was found. 展开更多

Offshore platforms are always subjected to wave action which is random variable amplitude cyclic loading. In order to simulate the stressing condition at the 'hot spot' of the tubular joints and the marine environment, random variable amplitude fatigue tests have been carried out on welded plate joints in sea water. The tests have been conducted under the conditions of loading frequency of 0.2 Hz/, stress ratio of -1, seawater temperature of about 20°C and cathodic protection with the potential about -850 mV, SCE. The test results have been compared with the seawater corrosion fatigue life under constant amplitude loading. Miner's linear cumulative damage summation rule has been used to predict the corrosion fatigue life under variable amplitude loading. The predicted life is in good agreement with the test data. 展开更多

Durability and ecological effects of the stainless steel reinforced coral waste concrete were compared with those of the carbon steel reinforced ordinary concrete.The results showed that the corrosion current densities of the stainless steel in the coral waste concrete were less than one-tenth of those of the carbon steel in the same grade ordinary concrete.The stainless steel in the seawater coral waste concrete maintained passivation even after more than two years of immersion in 3.5%NaCl solution,while the carbon steel counterparts in the ordinary concrete were seriously corroded under the same condition.Simultaneously,the corrosion current density of the stainless steel reinforcement decreased slightly with the strength grade of the coral waste concrete.The ecological evaluation indicated that the non-renewable energy consumption and CO_(2)emission of per cubic meter of the newly constructed stainless steel reinforced coral waste concrete were 23.72%and 1.419%less than those of the carbon steel reinforced ordinary concrete with the same grade,while the aforementioned two parameters of the former material were reduced by 44.81%and 32.0%in comparison to the latter one in 50 years duration. 展开更多

Inhibitors are regularly used as one of the principal prevention and control techniques in reinforcement corrosion. Hence this study investigates the effect of calcium nitrate and sodium nitrite inhibitors on the rebar corrosion of medium carbon steel in seawater and cassava fluid with a view to determining inhibitive potentials of the different inhibitors in the two media. Gravimetric and voltametric techniques were employed in this study and a total of forty-five corrosion coupons of different dimensions were produced. Forty coupons were used for gravimetric analysis and the remaining five for corrosion potentials measurements. Eight of the samples were used as control;while other eight samples each were admixed with calcium nitrate and sodium nitrite in concrete cubes. Two controls and admixed samples each were later immersed in seawater and cassava fluid, respectively, for durations of 32 days to determine the corrosion potentials using a voltmeter and a Copper-Copper Sulphate Electrode (Cu/CuSO4). The pH of each medium was measured throughout the period of exposure. The results obtained expressed that all the samples except the control samples, displayed some degree of inhibition. The inhibition levels for the admixed samples in seawater were higher compared with those in cassava fluid. Inhibition efficiencies for various inhibitors followed different trends in different environment. The inhibition efficiencies for calcium nitrate in cassava fluid and seawater were 26.81% and 64.85% respectively. The study concluded that inorganic inhibitors were effective in inhibiting corrosion in cyanide and chloride contaminated concrete cubes. 展开更多

Chemical mitigation is regularly used as one of the principal prevention and control techniques in reinforcement corrosion. Hence this study presents the effect of toluene and dioctylphthalate on the rebar corrosion of medium carbon steel in seawater and cassava fluid with a view to determining inhibitive potentials of the different inhibitors in the two media. Gravimetric and voltametric techniques were employed in this study and a total of forty-five corrosion coupons of different dimensions were produced. Forty coupons were used for gravimetry and the remaining five for corrosion potentials measurements. Eight of the samples were used as control;while other eight samples were admixed with dioctylphthalate and toluene in concrete cubes. The exhaust and flame from a supersonic airborne missile high-energy smoke-born engine (SAMHSE) may lead to high-temperature ablation, supersonic-erosion, dreg-adherence (HTASED) and corrosion on the launcher slide track, causing serious problems to the operation and decreasing the lifetime of the launcher. Therefore, it is imperative to study the destructive mechanism so as to guarantee the smooth operation and increase the lifetime of military equipments. Accordingly, HTASED and corrosion were systematically observed and analyzed with the emphasis placed on the mechanism investigations making use of a series evaluation tests, typical missile engine simulation tests, national military standard methods, scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical corrosion tests. It is found that the thermal impact of high-temperature flame and supersonic erosion of corrosive melting particle jet of the SAMHSE lead to surface defects of micro-cracks, denudation and corrosive residue. Some defects reach to metal base becoming to "corrosive channels". Repetitive HTASED may cause ablation-adhesion fatigue stress, which enhances the surface corrosion and destruction. HTASED and corrosion are related to the type of a SAMHSE fuel and experience of the launcher. Surface destruction is related to synergistic effects of the HTASED. The ablated and failed Al or steel surface is liable to electrochemical corrosion characterized by pitting in humid and salt-spray environment. 展开更多
