Al2O3-r2O03/NiCoCrAIYTa coatings were prepared via atmosphere plasma spraying (APS). The microstructure and phase com- position of the coatings were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), laser confocal scanning microsco- py (LSCM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The dry frictional wear behavior of the coatings at 500℃ in static air was inves- tigated and compared with that of 0Cr25Ni20 steel. The results show that the coatings comprise the slatted layers of oxide phases, unmelted particles, and pores. The hot abrasive resistance of the coatings is enhanced compared to that of 0Cr25Ni20, and their mass loss is approxi- mately one-fifteenth that of 0Cr25Ni20 steel. The main wear failure mechanisms of the coatings are abrasive wear, fatigue wear, and adhe- sive wear. 展开更多

In order to improve the hardness and tribological performance of Ti6Al4V alloy,NiCoCrAlY-B_(4)C composite coatings with B_(4)C of 5%,10%and 15%(mass fraction)were fabricated on its surface by laser cladding(LC).The morphologies, chemical compositions and phases of obtained coatings were analyzed using scanning electronic microscope(SEM),energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS),and X-ray diffraction(XRD),respectively. The effects of B_(4)C mass fraction on the coefficient of friction(COF)and wear rate of NiCoCrAlY-B_(4)C coatings were investigated using a ball-on-disc wear tester. The results show that the NiCoCrAlY-B_(4)C coatings with different B_(4)C mass fractions are mainly composed of NiTi,NiTi_(2),α-Ti,CoO,AlB_(2),TiC,TiB and TiB_(2)phases.The COFs and wear rates of NiCoCrAlY-B_(4)C coatings decrease with the increase of B_(4)C content, which are contributed to the improvement of coating hardness by the B_(4)C addition. The wear mechanisms of NiCoCrAlY-B_(4)C coatings are changed from adhesive wear and oxidation wear to fatigue wear with the increase of B_(4)C content. 展开更多

The high-temperature tensile behavior of laser welded Ti-22Al-25Nb (at%) joints was investigated at 500,650,800,and 1 000 ℃.The temperatures for tensile tests were selected according to the phase transformation sequence of Ti2AlNb-based alloys. At temperatures lower than the B2+O phase field (500 ℃) and higher than the B2+O phase field (1 000 ℃),the joints fracture in the base metal in ductile fracture mode.By contrast, the joints exhibit obvious high-temperature brittleness in the B2+O phase field (650 °C and 800 ℃).Heat treatments were conducted with respect to the thermal history of tensile specimens.Intergranular microcracks along the grain boundary of B2 phase are found in the fusion zone after the heat treatments at 650 ℃ and 800 ℃.The high-temperature brittleness at 650 ℃ and 800 ℃ is attributed to the B2→O transformation along the grain boundary. The stress concentration caused by the volume change of B2→O transformation also contributes to the high-temperature brittleness of laser welded Ti-22Al-25Nb joints. 展开更多

A good Ti-based joint implant should prevent stress shielding and achieve good bioactivity and anti-infection performance. To meet these requirements, the low-elastic-modulus alloy—Ti–35Nb–2Ta–3Zr—was used as the substrate, and functional coatings that contained bioceramics and Ag ions were prepared for coating on TiO_(2)nanotubes(diameter:(80±20)nm and(150±40)nm)using anodization, deposition, and spin-coating methods. The effects of the bioceramics(nano-β-tricalcium phosphate,microhydroxyapatite(micro-HA),and meso-CaSiO_(3))and Ag nanoparticles(size:(50±20)nm)on the antibacterial activity and the tribocorrosion, corrosion, and early in vitro osteogenic behaviors of the nanotubes were investigated. The tribocorrosion and corrosion results showed that the wear rate and corrosive rate were highly dependent on the features of the nanotube surface.Micro-HA showed great wear resistance with a wear rate of(1.26±0.06)×10^(−3)mm^(3)/(N·m)due to adhesive and abrasivewear.Meso-CaSiO_(3)showed enhanced cell adhesion, proliferation, and alkaline phosphatase activity. The coatings that contained nano-Ag exhibited good antibacterial activity with an antibacterial rate of≥89.5%against Escherichia coli. These findings indicate that hybrid coatings may have the potential to accelerate osteogenesis. 展开更多

The double-layer NiCr-Cr_(3)C_(2)/Ni-Zn-Al_(2)O_(3) coatings with sufficient corrosion and wear resistance were prepared on low carbon steel substrates. The intermediate layers Ni-Zn-Al_(2)O_(3) were fabricated by using low-pressure cold spray (LPCS) method to improve the salt fog corrosion resistance properties of the supersonic plasma spray (SPS) NiCr-Cr_(3)C_(2) coatings. The friction and wear performance for the double-layer and single-layer NiCr-Cr_(3)C_(2) coatings were carried out by line-contact reciprocating sliding, respectively.Combined with the coating surface analysis techniques, the effect of the salt fog corrosion on the tribological properties of the double-layer coatings was studied. The results showed that the double-layer coatings exhibited better wear resistance than that of the single-layer coatings, due to the better corrosion resistance of the intermediate layer;the wear mass losses of the double-layer coatings was reduced by 70%than that of the single layer coatings and the wear mechanism of coatings after salt fog corrosion conditions is mainly corrosion wear. 展开更多

The lamellar hydrates of CAC were designed with the introduction of nano CaCO_(3)or Mg-Al hydrotalcite(M-A-H),and the effects on the green strength, pore structures, and high-temperature fracture behavior of alumina-spinel castables were investigated. The results show that nano CaCO_(3)or M-A-H stimulates rapidly the hydration of CAC and the formation of lamellar C_(4)AcH_(11)or coexistence of C_(2)AH_(8)and C_(4)AcH_(11)at 25℃.The formation of lamellar hydrates can contribute to a more complicated pore structure, especially in the range of 400-2000 nm.Meanwhile, the incorporation of well-distributed CaO or MgO sources from nano CaCO_(3)or M-A-H also regulates the distribution of CA_(6)and spinel(pre-formed and in-situ).Consequently,the optimized microstructure and complicated pore structure can induce the deflection and bridging of cracks, thus facilitating the consumption of fracture energy and enhancing the resistance to thermal stress damage. 展开更多

The hot extrusion die is a key tool for determining the surface quality and dimensional accuracy of extruded products.Because its service process is subject to high temperature, high pressure, and wear,it must be resistant to these conditions. In this paper, the high-temperature friction and wear properties of a cobalt(Co)-based alloy were investigated and compared with those of a titanium carbide(TiC)cemented material. The results show that the high-temperature wear performance of the Co-based alloy is better than that of the TiC cemented material, and that Co-based materials have the potential for replacing TiC cemented materials as hot-extrusion-die materials.Due to the high density and good combination of the matrix and carbide, the carbides do not easily peel off from the matrix during the wear process.Due to the higher impact toughness of the Co-based alloys, microcracks that can cause worn-surface peeling are not easily generated. As a result, the high-temperature wear performance of Co-based alloys is found to be better than that of TiC cemented materials. 展开更多

To solve the problem of the severe mismatch between the product and roll materials in the preliminary rolling line,a new graphitic steel material was designed, its microstructure and high-temperature friction and wear properties were investigated. Moreover, the feasibility of replacing semi-steel with this new material in the V1 stand roll was studied herein. The results show that the graphitic steel matrix is strengthened by silicon and nickel elements. The presence of spherical graphite also provides self-lubrication and heat conduction and prevents the propagation of cracks.Carbides in the appropriate amount and size strengthen the matrix, reduce the cracking effect of the matrix, and are not easily broken, thereby reducing high-temperature abrasive wear.Under the same hightemperature friction and wear conditions, compared with semi-steel,the wear-scar surface of graphitic steel exhibits less wear-scar depth and wear volume,a smaller friction coefficient, reduced oxide layer thickness, and fewer instances of peeling and microcracks. Therefore, the newly designed graphitic steel has higher wear resistance and hot-crack resistance than semi-steel,which makes it feasible for use in replacing semi-steel as a new V1 frame roll material in the blooming mill. 展开更多

Dry sliding wear tests on as-cast and cast+T6 Mg-11Y-5Gd-2Zn magnesium alloys were performed using a ball-on-plate configuration. The wear rates were measured within a load range of 3-15 N, sliding speed range of 0.03-0.24 m/s, test temperature range of 25-200 °C and at a constant sliding distance of 400 m. The wear tracks, worn surfaces and wear debris of the alloys were analyzed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results show that the wear rate of the alloys increases almost linearly with increasing applied load and decreases with increasing sliding speed. The wear rate of the as-cast alloy is higher than that of the cast+T6 alloy. The amount of Mg12Y1Zn1 phase, surface oxidation and retained wear debris affect the wear rate. The dominant wear mechanisms under the test condition are abrasion and plastic deformation. 展开更多

The B4C/Mg composites fabricated by metal-assisted pressureless infiltration technique were used as experimental material, and the wear behavior and mechanism of this material were studied. A pin-on-disc apparatus was used to evaluate the wear behavior where loads of 20, 40, 60 and 80 N, and a sliding velocity of 250 r/min were exerted. The results show that B4C/Mg composites possess superior wear resistance than pure Mg under various applied loads, and the content of Ti, as infiltration inducer, has an influence on the wear resistance of B4C/Mg composites. The dominant wear mechanism for pure Mg is abrasion, while that for B4C/Mg composites under low loads is adhesion and delamination. Under high loads, the wear mechanism of B4C/Mg composites can be attributed to thermal softening and melting or plastic deformation. 展开更多

The microstructure and dry sliding wear behav- ior of cast Al-18 wt% MgaSi in-situ metal matrix com- posite modified by Nd were investigated. Experimental results show that, after introducing a proper amount of Nd, both primary and eutectic Mg2Si in the Al-18 wt% Mg2Si composite are well modified. The morphology of primary Mg2Si is changed from irregular or dendritic to polyhedral shape, and its average particle size is signifi- cantly decreased. Moreover, the morphology of the eutectic MgzSi phase is altered from flake-like to very short fibrous or dot-like. The wear rates and friction coefficient of the composites with Nd are lower than those without Nd. Furthermore, the addition of 0.5 wt% Nd changes the wear mechanism of the composite from the combination of abrasive, adhesive, and delamination wear without Nd into a single mild abrasion wear with 0.5 wt% Nd. 展开更多

Silver based composites containing different amounts of WS2were prepared by hot-pressing method and their tribologicalbehaviors were investigated against coin silver under humid air,dry nitrogen and vacuum on a ball-on-disk tester with normal load of5N.The components of composites, microstructure of debris and worn surface were characterized using XRD SEM,EDS and XPS.It is demonstrated that environmental conditions significantly affect the tribological behavior of silver based composites. The frictioncoefficient is the highest in humid air,and the lowest in dry nitrogen. It is found that the friction and wear behavior of the compositesare strongly depended on the characteristics of the lubrication film forming in different operating environments, such as thicknessand composition. In addition,it is indicated that the dominant wear mechanisms of silver based composites are abrasive wear anddelamination under different conditions. 展开更多

Tribological behavior and wear mechanisms of mechanically milled Al5083 alloy and Al5083−5wt.%B4C composite at room temperature and 200°C were discussed. Results revealed that due to the oxidative wear at room temperature,a mechanically mixed layer(MML)was formed to protect the surface of the samples.Under 80 N of load at room temperature, the milled Al5083 and the Al5083−5wt.%B4C samples showed evidence of abrasion with limited volume loss.In this case, the wear rates were 5.8×10−7 and 4.4×10−7 mm3/(m·N),respectively.At 200°C and under 80 N of applied load, severe wear occurred in the milled Al5083 sample, and wear rate reached 10.8×10−7 mm3/(m·N)while the Al5083−5wt.%B4C sample showed mild wear with local 3-body abrasion and the wear rate reached 5.3×10−7 mm3/(m·N).Strengthening mechanisms such as dislocation pinning and the Hall−Petch theory, high hardness and the load transfer effect were crucial in determining the wear behavior of the Al5083−5wt.%B4C composite. On the other hand, the milled Al5083 sample represented a relatively high wear rate at 200°C,which seemed to be related to the local grain growth and a drop in its hardness. 展开更多

The aim of this work was to study the influence of the processing route on the microstructural constituents, hardness andtribological(wear and friction)behavior of Ti6Al4V biomedical alloy. In this sense, three different processing routes were studied:conventional casting, hot pressing and selective laser melting.A comprehensive metallurgical, mechanical and tribologicalcharacterization was performed by X-ray diffraction analysis,Vickers hardness tests and reciprocating ball-on-plate wear tests ofTi6Al4V/Al2O3sliding pairs. The results showed a great influence of the processing route on the microstructural constituents andconsequent differences on hardness and wear performance. The highest hardness and wear resistance were obtained for Ti6Al4Valloy produced by selective laser melting, due to a markedly different cooling rate that leads to significantly different microstructurewhen compared to hot pressing and casting. This study assesses and confirms that selective laser melting is potential to producecustomized Ti6Al4V implants with improved wear performance. 展开更多

The friction and wear behavior of Fe Al intermetallics based coating produced by high velocity arc spraying technique under dry sliding at room temperature were investigated using a ball on disc tribotester. The effect of sliding speed on friction coefficient and wear of the coating was studied. The worn surface of the coating was analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) to explore sliding friction and wear mechanism. The results show that the variations of friction coefficient can be divided into three distinct steps during the trail. Both the friction coefficient and the wear of the coating increase with increased sliding speed due to accelerated crack propagation rate and lamellar structure with poor ductility of the coating. The coating surface is subjected to alternately tensile stress and compression stress during sliding wear process, and the predominant wear mechanism of the coatings appears to be brittle fracture and delamination. 展开更多

The dry impact wear behavior of bainite ductile cast iron was evaluated under three different impact loads for 30000 cycles. The strain-hardening effects beneath the contact surfaces were analyzed according to the surfaces' micro-hardness profiles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to observe the wom surfaces. The results indicated that the material with the highest hardness was the one continuously cooled at 20℃, which exhibited the lowest wear rate under each set of test conditions. The hardness of the worn surface and the thickness of the hardened layer increased with the increases in impact load and in the number of test cycles. The better wear performance of the sample cooled at 20℃ is attributed to its finer microstructure and superior mechanical properties. All the samples underwent the transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) phenomenon after impact wear, as revealed by the fact that small amounts of retained austenite were detected by XRD. 展开更多

Wear behaviors of a peak-aged Cu-15Ni-8Sn alloy fabricated by powder metallurgy were investigated. The results indicated that the friction coefficients and the wear rates of Cu-15Ni-8Sn alloy within a normal load range of 50−700 N and a sliding speed range of 0.05−2.58 m/s were less than 0.14 and 2.8×10−6 mm3/mm,respectively.Stribeck-like curve and wear map were developed to describe the oil-lubrication mechanism and wear behavior. The equation of the dividing line between zones of safe and unsafe wear life was determined.Lubricating oil was squeezed into micro-cracks under severe wear conditions. In addition, the lubricating oil reacted with Cu-15Ni-8Sn alloy to generate the corresponding sulfides, which hindered the repair of micro-cracks,promoted cracks growth, and led to delamination. This work has established guidelines for the application of the Cu-15Ni-8Sn alloy under oil-lubricated conditions through developing wear map. 展开更多

The formation mechanism and wear behavior of a gradient nanostructured(GNS) Inconel 625 alloy were investigated using SEM, TEM and ball-on-disc sliding wear tester. The results show that surface mechanical grinding treatment(SMGT) induced an approximately 800 μm-deep gradient microstructure, consisting of surface nano-grained,nano-laminated, nano-twined, and severely deformed layers, which resulted in a reduced gradient in micro-hardness from 6.95 GPa(topmost surface) to 2.77 GPa(coarse-grained matrix). The nano-grained layer resulted from the formation of high-density nano-twins and subsequent interaction between nano-twins and dislocations. The width and depth of the wear scar, wear loss volume, and wear rate of the SMGT-treated sample were smaller than those of untreated coarse-grained sample. Moreover, the wear mechanisms for both samples were mainly abrasive wear and adhesive wear, accompanied with mild oxidation wear. The notable wear resistance enhancement of the GNS Inconel 625 alloy was attributed to the high micro-hardness, high residual compressive stress, and high strain capacity of the GNS surface layer. 展开更多
