Effects of quenching temperature and cooling conditions(water cooling and 10%NaCl cooling)on microstructure and mechanical properties of a 0.2%Ti low alloy martensitic wear-resistant steel used for die casting ejector plate were investigated.The results show that lath martensite can be obtained after austenitizing in the range of 860-980℃and then water cooling.With an increase in austenitizing temperature,the precipitate content gradually decreases.The precipitates are mainly composed of TiC and Ti4C2S2,and their total content is between 1.15wt.%and 1.64wt.%.The precipitate phase concentration by water-cooling is higher than that by10%NaCl cooling due to the lower cooling rate of water cooling.As the austeniting temperature increases,the hardness and tensile strength of both water cooled and 10%NaCl cooled steels firstly increase and then decrease.The experimental steel exhibits the best comprehensive mechanical properties after being austenitized at 900℃,cooled by 10%NaCl,and then tempered at 200℃.Its hardness,ultimate tensile strength,and wear rate reach551.4 HBW,1,438.2 MPa,and 0.48×10^(-2)mg·m^(-1),respectively. 展开更多

The types and growth of various oxide scales formed during the different phases of the production of hotrolled strip steel products are reviewed. Similarities and differences between the "tertiary scale" on the surface of carbon steels at high temperatures and the oxide scale on pure iron are compared. The micro-structural features of the "final oxide scale" on the surface of strip steels at room temperature as well as the relationship between these features and the position of the steel coil (plate) and the subsequent processes of recoiling, temper rolling and trimming, etc. are summarized. The actual oxide scales retained on the commercial hot-rolled strip steels at room temperature have been proposed to define as " quartus scale" for the first time. The micro-structural development and phase transformation of the initial "tertiary scale" during and after cooling and coiling are described. The reasons for the "tertiary scale" on carbon steels differing from the oxide scale formed on pure iron, and the major influencing factors in the formation of various types of "quartus scales" are analyzed from both thermodynamic and dynamic viewpoints. The development mechanism of " quartus scales" is discussed and the potential effects of the " quartus scale" state (thickness, constitution, structure and defects), on the rusting and pickling properties of commercial hot-rolled strip steel, as well as on the mechanical properties of oxide scales are analyzed. 展开更多

The test results showed that niobium tend to exist in solution state in matrix with less precipitation, and niobium-titanium could be precipitated in form of (Nb, Ti)C or (Nb, Ti) (C, N), which play an important role in increasing yield strength (from 495 MPa to 610 MPa). Besides, the retained austenite had a positive effect on improving the plasticity by transformation into martensite during tensile deformation. 展开更多

As one of the important categories of hot-rolled products, hot-rolled steel plates for automobile applications generally undergo uniform corrosion or localized corrosion according to different environments of manufacturing, transportation and/or storage of the plates. General corrosion often takes place on the surface of a plate in the exterior part of a package, and only reduces the thickness of the plate and slightly increases the roughness of the surface; however, localized corrosion on the surface of a plate inside the package is likely to result in the formation of pit-like defects on the substrate of the plate, which cannot be removed thoroughly by normal acid pickling or sand blasting, and affects the application of the plate. This research report analyzes the phenomena and characteristics of the rusting behavior of hot- rolled steel plates for automobile applications, and the influencing factors are summaried. Influence of thermo-mechanical controlled processing(TMCP),including two-stage rolling with laminar cooling,air cooling and ultra-fast cooling,on the microstructure and mechanical properties of three kinds of Nb-microalloeyed steels was investigated by hot-rolling experiment.Effect of chemistry compositions and microstructure on mechanical properties and the relationship between the multiphase microstructure' s formation with TMCP were analyzed.The results showed that the mixed microstructure containing ferrite,bainite,martensite and a small amount of retained austenite can be obtained by thermo-mechanical controlled processing.Size, quantity and distribution of the constituents(ferrite grain,bainite packet and M-A islands) significantly affect the mechanical properties of three kinds of Nb-microalloyed steels.Under the condition of similar TMCP parameters, there is a gradually decreasing tendency in tensile strength from high silicon Nb steel,high silicon Nb-Ti steel to low silicon Nb-Ti steel,and an opposite tendency in total elongation and product of tensile strength and ductility. Total elongation and product of tensile strength and ductility reach the maximum values(41%and 25256 MPa% respectively) for low silicon Nb-Ti steel. 展开更多

In this study, the welding technology of the hot-rolled extra-high-strength steel, BS960QC, has been comprehensively investigated. Analysis has been made on the weldability ,the different welding procedures ,the mechanical properties, and the fatigue properties, and a set of recommendation guidelines have been proposed for evaluating the welded joints of the extra-high-strength steel. The research and results indicate that the hot-rolled extra-high-strength steel, BS960QC,has good weldability and an excellent adaptability to welding procedures. Further,the excellent mechanical properties and fatigue properties of the welded joints ,which can be achieved by using optimized welding procedures, can completely meet the technical requirements of the construction machinery industry. 展开更多

Results presented in this study contribute to investigation of the microstructure and mechanical properties of the hot-rolled Fe16Mn0.6C steel plates.The steel plates have been produced by being hot-rolled at temperatures ranging from 1100℃ to 850℃ in seven passes to 97.5% reduction in thickness and then cooled in a furnace of 650℃.Some plates have been annealed at temperatures ranging from 300℃ to 1100℃ for 5min to 60min,and then followed by water quenching.There are annealing twins in the hot-rolled Fe16Mn0.6C steel.Fe16Mn0.6C steel presents similar ductile behavior as X-IPTM steel,but much higher elongation than commercial martensitic steel (MP) 1000,dual phase (DP) 980,and transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) 980 steels.Fe16Mn0.6C steel experiences γε (-α) transformation in some local regions,but remains mostly austenite during the entire deformation process.Fe16Mn0.6C steel with special mechanical properties can be produced by using the appropriate anneal technology.Twinning induced plasticity(TWIP) effect only occurs in the Fe16Mn0.6C steel annealed at temperature higher than 900℃. 展开更多

With its high strength and hardness, wear-resistant steel has become an important material in the field of construction machinery manufacturing.Given that quenching technology is a crucial component of wear-resistant steel production, the selection of the cooling method to be used during this process is important.In this study, the feasibility of quenching wear-resistant steel by air-atomized water spray cooling was studied, and the cooling rate, microstructure, and hardness of wear-resistant steel under various cooling device structures were analyzed.The results reveal that the air-atomized water spray cooling method is an effective technique in quenching wear-resistant steel.Furthermore, martensite and uniform hardness were obtained by the air-atomized water spray cooling technique.As the space between the nozzles in each row in the device increased, the cooling rate was reduced during quenching.Meanwhile, the martensite content decreased, and more carbides were observed in the martensitic structure.A mixture comprising self-tempered martensite and bainite was formed at a large distance over a longer period of time.All these factors resulted in lower hardness and worse property uniformity. 展开更多

Using ABAQUS software and cylindrical ellipsoid and body heat sources with a peak-heat-flux- attenuation function, a finite element model of the temperature field in the laser-arc hybrid welding of 4.5-mm BW300TP wear-resistant steel is proposed. The proposed model considers convection, radiation, molten pool flow, and heat conduction effect on temperature. A comparison of the simulation and actual welding test results confirms the reliability of the model. This welding heat-process model can provide the cooling rate at any position in the heat affected zone (HAZ) and can be used as a reference for the analysis of material properties and for process optimization. 展开更多

Baosteel’s first BTW1 austenitic high-manganese wear-resistant steel exhibits strong deformation-induced hardening characteristics.Compared with common low-alloy martensitic wear-resistant steels in the market, it has improved impact wear resistance, hard abrasive wear, erosion wear performance, and impact toughness.The metallurgical properties of such austenitic wear-resistant steel lead to the risk of failure because of hot cracking defects in the welded structure.In wear-resistant applications, evaluating hot cracking susceptibility is necessary to avoid the effect of welding defects.In this study, the Varestraint test is used to quantitatively analyze and evaluate the hot cracking susceptibility of BTW1 austenitic high-manganese wear-resistant steel.The test results show that by controlling the content of impurity elements and grain refinement, BTW1 austenitic high-manganese wear-resistant steel effectively reduces hot cracking tendency and has a low incidence of hot cracking under small strain conditions.The developed matching welding process can effectively avoid the influence of hot cracking susceptibility. 展开更多

In this study, the matrix structure, state and composition of the mill scales of four typical domestically made 510L hot-rolled strips were observed and analyzed by means of optical microscopy (OM) ,scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The corrosion behavior of the steels with and without mill scales were investigated by means of hot-humid corrosion tests under the condition of relative humidity ( RH ) of 95% at 50℃ and 70℃, respectively. The results show that the matrix structures, state, composition and thickness of mill scales vary in the strips. The rusting starting time of the specimens with scales is generally a bit longer than that of the specimens without scales, but their corrosion mass-gain is higher. For these two kinds of specimens ,their corrosion rate increases significantly with the increase of temperature. The rusting behavior of the 510L strips produced by various plants is different due to the variations of hot-rolling processes and designed chemical compositions. Various relevant aspects should be taken into account in the evaluation of the corrosion behavior of hot-rolled strips. 展开更多

In this work, the microstructure and the strain partitioning of lean duplex stainless steel 2101 (LDX 2101) during different hot-rolling processes are investigated by optical microscopy and electron-backscattered diffraction (EBSD). The results show that the LDX 2101 exhibits poor thermoplasticity at high temperature. The four-pass hot-rolled plates show fewer edge-cracking defects and superior thermoplasticity compared with the two-pass hot-rolled plates prepared at different temperature. The phase boundary is the weakest site in the LDX 2101. The cracks are initiated and propagated along the phase boundaries during the hot-rolling process. According to the EBSD analysis, the increase of the hot-rolling pass can dramatically improve the strain distribution in ferrite and austenite phases and promote the strain transmission in the constituent phases, thereby improving the coordinated deformation ability of the two phases. This effect further in- creases the thermoplasticity and reduces the formation of edge cracks in LDX 2101. 展开更多

The research results show that the wear resistance of the Mn18Cr2 cast steel is superior to that of the Mn13Cr2 cast steel under the condition of the same carbon content and different impact abrasive wear conditions because the Mn18Cr2 cast steel possesses higher worn work hardening capacity as well as a more desirable combination of high hardness and impact toughness than that of the Mn13Cr2 cast steel. When a 4.5 J impact abrasive load is applied, the wear mechanism of both steels is that plastic deformation fatigue spalling and micro-cutting coexist, and the former dominates. When the carbon content is increased, the worn work hardening effect becomes increasingly dramatic, while the wear resistance of both steels decreases, which implies that an increase in impact toughness is beneficial to improving the wear resistance under severe impact abrasive wear conditions. Under the condition of a 1.0 J impact abrasive load, the wear mechanism of both steels is that plastic deformation fatigue spalling and micro-cutting coexist, and the latter plays a leading role. The worn work hardening effect and wear resistance intensify when the carbon content is increased, which implies that a higher hardness can be conducive to better wear resistance under low impact abrasive condition. 展开更多

The non-vacuum roll bonding method of nickel plating on the base materials is put forward in accordance with the primary problems existed in the roll bonding of stainless/carbon steel. After nickel plating test on the base materials, the microstructure of nickel cladding is observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at high, and room temperature, and the results show that the nickel cladding on base material can be protected from oxidation in the high temperature. Non-vacuum roll bonding tests of nickel plating on base materials are done by the roll bonding equipment, and the roll bonding plates of stainless/carbon steel are obtained. The microstructure and the elements distribution of non-vacuum roll bonding interface are analyzed by optical microscope (OM) and SEM.
