Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is characterized by primary damage to the brain from the external mechanical force and by subsequent secondary injury due to various molecular and pathophysiological responses that event...Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is characterized by primary damage to the brain from the external mechanical force and by subsequent secondary injury due to various molecular and pathophysiological responses that eventually lead to neuronal cell death. Secondary brain injury events may occur minutes, hours, or even days after the trauma, and provide valuable therapeutic targets to prevent further neuronal degeneration. At the present time, there is no effective treatment for TBI due, in part, to the widespread impact of numerous complex secondary biochemical and pathophysiological events occurring at different time points following the initial injury. MicroRNAs control a range of physiological and pathological functions such as develop- ment, differentiation, apoptosis and metabolism, and may serve as potential targets for progress assessment and intervention against TBI to mitigate secondary damage to the brain. This has implications regarding improving the diagnostic accuracy of brain impairment and long-term outcomes as well as potential novel treatments. Recent human studies have identified specific microRNAs in serum/plasma (miR-425-p, -21, -93, -191 and -499) and cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) (miR-328, -362-3p, -451, -486a) as possible indicators of the diagnosis, severity, and prognosis of TBI. Experimental animal studies have examined specific microRNAs as biomarkers and therapeutic targets for moderate and mild TBI (e.g., miR-21, miR-23b). MicroRNA profil- ing was altered by voluntary exercise. Differences in basal microRNA expression in the brain of adult and aged animals and alterations in response to TBI (e.g., miR-21) have also been reported. Because Met is an attractive therapeutic target for a multitude of cancers, extensive research towards finding Met and HGF/SF inhibitors is ongoing.? The growing significance of security issues has expanded the necessity and possibility of recognizing and achieving the goal of security from the perspective of human rights.Combined with socio-cultural and historical...The growing significance of security issues has expanded the necessity and possibility of recognizing and achieving the goal of security from the perspective of human rights.Combined with socio-cultural and historical dynamics,human rights can be construed as the needs of people to which social authorities should and can respond,and their mechanism depends on“the alignment between people’s intrinsic needs and the social resources available.”Security,as a significant part of people’s intrinsic needs,should be supported by social resources;social authorities at all levels have the duty and potential to support people’s security needs.Thus,security has the socio-cultural basis to be considered as a branch of human rights.Once the human rights attribution of security has been established,further consideration is required for its place in the human rights spectrum.When analyzing the existing set of human rights,we can classify them based on the subject,the object,or the goal.The right to security is more appropriately classified within the dimension of goals,thereby being placed alongside the right to subsistence and the right to development.Integrating security into human rights can resolve the relationship between the right to security and other human rights using the theoretical framework of rights conflict,rights hierarchy,and rights system ranking,thereby avoiding the tendency to curb the security needs of countries and individuals by ideologizing human rights.展开更多
During the last two centuries, there have been many spectacular advances in medical science, the main consequence of which has been the dramatically reduced burden of infectious diseases. While in the 1800s many peopl...During the last two centuries, there have been many spectacular advances in medical science, the main consequence of which has been the dramatically reduced burden of infectious diseases. While in the 1800s many people died before reaching adult- hood, nowadays most people survive. Hence average life ex- pectancy in 1800s was around 30-40, which was barely higher than it had been in Greek and Roman times (Finch, 2010), but nowadays life expectancy in most modernised economies is around 75 - 80. This demographic shift, which has happened in only 200 years, has created a dramatic change in the causes of mortality. The major killers in the modern world are non- communicable diseases (NCDs): principally cardiovascular disease, cancer and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alz- heimer's disease. A major factor that influences susceptibility to all these diseases is age. As we get older, our risk of developing these NCDs increases enormously. For example, the rate of breast cancer in females at age 15-19 is less than 10 per 100,000 population, but this increases to 100 at age 40-44, 275 at age 55--59 and 450 at age 85 + (http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/ cancer-info/cancerstats/types/breast/incidence/#age). The microbial quality of urban recreational water is of great concern to public health.The monitoring of indicator organisms and several pathogens alone is not sufficient to accurately and comprehensively identify mic...The microbial quality of urban recreational water is of great concern to public health.The monitoring of indicator organisms and several pathogens alone is not sufficient to accurately and comprehensively identify microbial risks.To assess the levels of bacterial pathogens and health risks in urban recreational water,we analyzed pathogen diversity and quantified four pathogens in 46 water samples collected from waterbodies in Beijing Olympic Forest Park in one year.The pathogen diversity revealed by 16 S r RNA gene targeted next-generation sequencing(NGS) showed that 16 of 40 genera and 13 of 76 reference species were present.The most abundant species were Acinetobacter johnsonii,Mycobacterium avium and Aeromonas spp.Quantitative polymerase chain reaction(q PCR) of Escherichia coli(uid A),Aeromonas(aer A),M.avium(16S r RNA),Pseudomonas aeruginosa(oaa) and Salmonella(inv A) showed that the aer A genes were the most abundant,occurring in all samples with concentrations of 10^(4–6) genome copies/100 m L,followed by oaa,inv A and M.avium.In total,34.8% of the samples harbored all genes,indicating the prevalence of these pathogens in this recreational waterbody.Based on the q PCR results,a quantitative microbial risk assessment(QMRA) showed that the annual infection risks of Salmonella,M.avium and P.aeruginosa in five activities were mostly greater than the U.S.EPA risk limit for recreational contacts,and children playing with water may be exposed to the greatest infection risk.Our findings provide a comprehensive understanding of bacterial pathogen diversity and pathogen abundance in urban recreational water by applying both NGS and q PCR.展开更多
