In this study, several kinds of flexible protective materials sprayed with polyurea elastomers (hereinafter referred to as polyurea elastomer protective material) were adopted to meet the abrasion resistance requirement of hydraulic structures, and their abrasion resistances against the water flow with suspended load or bed load were studied systematically through tests. Natural basalt stones were adopted as the abrasive for simulation of the abrasion effect of the water flow with bed load, and test results indicate that the basalt stone is suitable for use in the abrasion resistance test of the flexible protective material. The wear process of the polyurea elastomer protective material is stable, and the wear loss is linear with the time of abrasion. If the wear thickness is regarded as the abrasion resistance evaluation factor, the abrasion resistance of the 351 pure polyurea is about twice those of pure polyurea with a high level of hardness and aliphatic polyurea, and over five times that of high-performance abrasion-resistant concrete under the abrasion of the water flow with suspended load. It is also about 50 times that of high-performance abrasion-resistant concrete under the abrasion of the water flow with bed load. Overall, the abrasion resistance of pure polyurea presented a decreasing trend with increasing hardness. Pure polyurea with a Shore hardness of D30 has the best abrasion resistance, which is 60 to 70 times that of high-performance abrasion-resistant concrete under the abrasion of the water flow with bed load, and has been recommended, among the five kinds of pure polyurea materials with different hardness, in anti-abrasion protection of hydraulic structures. 展开更多

A comprehensive safety evaluation system taking the most influential factors into account has been developed to evaluate the reliability of hydraulic metal structures. Applying the techniques of AI and DB, the idea of a one-machine and three-base system is proposed. The framework of the three-base system has been designed and the structural framework constructed in turn. A practical example is given to illustrate the process of using this system and it can be used for comparison and analysis purposes. The key technology of the system is its ability to reorganize and improve the expert system's knowledge base by establishing the expert system. This system utilizes the computer technology inference process, making safety evaluation conclusions more reasonable and applicable to the actual situation. The system is not only advanced, but also feasible, reliable, artificially intelligent, and has the capacity to constantly grow. 展开更多

In conjunction with association rules for data mining, the connections between testing indices and strong and weak association rules were determined, and new derivative rules were obtained by further reasoning. Association rules were used to analyze correlation and check consistency between indices. This study shows that the judgment obtained by weak association rules or non-association rules is more accurate and more credible than that obtained by strong association rules. When the testing grades of two indices in the weak association rules are inconsistent, the testing grades of indices are more likely to be erroneous, and the mistakes are often caused by human factors. Clustering data mining technology was used to analyze the reliability of a diagnosis, or to perform health diagnosis directly. Analysis showed that the clustering results are related to the indices selected, and that if the indices selected are more significant, the characteristics of clustering results are also more significant, and the analysis or diagnosis is more credible. The indices and diagnosis analysis function produced by this study provide a necessary theoretical foundation and new ideas for the development of hydraulic metal structure health diagnosis technology. 展开更多

In this study, the damage-plasticity model for concrete that was verified by the model experiment was used to calculate the damage to a spiral case structure based on the damage mechanics theory. The concrete structure surrounding the spiral case was simulated with a three-dimensional finite element model. Then, the distribution and evolution of the structural damage were studied. Based on investigation of the change of gap openings between the steel liner and concrete structure, the impact of the non-uniform variation of gaps on the load-beating ratio between the steel liner and concrete structure was analyzed. The comparison of calculated results of the simplified and simulation algorithms shows that the simulation algorithm is a feasible option for the calculation of spiral case structures. In addition, the shell-spring model was introduced for optimization analysis, and the results were reasonable. 展开更多

Concrete is widely used in various large construction projects owing to its high durability, compressive strength, and plasticity. However, the tensile strength of concrete is low,and concrete cracks easily.Changes in the concrete structure will result in changes in parameters such as the frequency mode and curvature mode, which allows one to effectively locate and evaluate structural damages. In this study, the characteristics of the curvature modes in concrete structures are analyzed and a method to obtain the curvature modes based on the strain and displacement modes is proposed.Subsequently, various indices for the damage diagnosis of concrete structures based on the curvature mode are introduced.A damage assessment method for concrete structures is established using an artificial bee colony backpropagation neural network algorithm. The proposed damage assessment method for dam concrete structures comprises various modal parameters, such as curvature and frequency. The feasibility and accuracy of the model are evaluated based on a case study of a concrete gravity dam.The results show that the damage assessment model can accurately evaluate the damage degree of concrete structures with a maximum error of less than 2%,which is within the required accuracy range of damage identification and assessment for most concrete structures. 展开更多

In this study, we simulated water flow in a water conservancy project consisting of various hydraulic structures, such as sluices, pumping stations, hydropower stations, ship locks, and culverts, and developed a multi-period and multi-variable joint optimization scheduling model for flood control, drainage, and irrigation. In this model, the number of sluice holes, pump units, and hydropower station units to be opened were used as decision variables, and different optimization objectives and constraints were considered. This model was solved with improved genetic algorithms and verified using the Huaian Water Conservancy Project as an example. The results show that the use of the joint optimization scheduling led to a 10% increase in the power generation capacity and a 15% reduction in the total energy consumption. The change in the water level was reduced by 0.25 m upstream of the Yundong Sluice, and by 50% downstream of pumping stations No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4. It is clear that the joint optimization scheduling proposed in this study can effectively improve power generation capacity of the project, minimize operating costs and energy consumption, and enable more stable operation of various hydraulic structures. The results may provide references for the management of water conservancy projects in complex river networks. 展开更多

Modal parameter identification is a core issue in health monitoring and damage detection for hydraulic structures. For a roof overflow hydropower station with a bulb tubular unit under ambient excitation, a complex unit-powerhouse-dam coupling vibration system increases the difficulties of modal parameter identification. In this study, in view of the difficulties of modal order determination and the noise jamming caused by ambient excitation, along with false mode identification and elimination problems, the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method was used to decrease noise, the singular entropy increment spectrum was used to determine system order, and multiple criteria were used to eliminate false modes. The eigensystem realization algorithm (ERA) and stochastic subspace identification (SSI) method were then used to identify modal parameters. The results show that the relative errors of frequencies in the first four modes were within 10% for the ERA method, while those of SSI were over 10% in the second and third modes. Therefore, the ERA method is more appropriate for identifying the structural modal parameters for this particular powerhouse layout. 展开更多

This paper presents in-situ seismic performance tests of a bridge before its demolition due to accumulated scouring problem. The tests were conducted on three single columns and one caisson-type foundation. The three single columns were 1.8 m in diameter, reinforced by 30-D32 longitudinal reinforcements and laterally hooped by D16 reinforcements with spacing of 20 cm. The column height is 9.54 m,10.59 m and 10.37 m for Column P2,P3,and P4,respectively. Column P2 had no exposed foundation and was subjected to pseudo-dynamic tests with peak ground acceleration of 0.32 g first, followed by one cyclic loading test. Column P3 was the benchmark specimen with exposed length of 1.2 m on its foundation. The exposed length for Column P4 was excavated to 4 m,approximately 1/3 of the foundation length,to study the effect of the scouring problem to the column performance. Both Column P3 and Column P4 were subjected to cyclic loading tests. Based on the test results, due to the large dimension of the caisson foundation and the well graded gravel soil type that provided large lateral resistance, the seismic performance among the three columns had only minor differences. Lateral push tests were also conducted on the caisson foundation at Column P5. The caisson was 12 m long and had circular cross-sections whose diameters were 5 m in the upper portion and 4 m in the lower portion. An analytical model to simulate the test results was developed in the OpenSees platform. The analytical model comprised nonlinear flexural elements as well as nonlinear soil springs. The analytical results closely followed the experimental test results. A parametric study to predict the behavior of the bridge column with different ground motions and different levels of scouring on the foundation are also discussed. 展开更多

Uncertainty in geological structural modeling, especially geological corrosion(a kind of karst cave), is a bottleneck that restricts the development and application of geological computer modeling and effect estimation. To solve this issue, a stochastic modeling method based on the random field theory is proposed in comparison with the deterministic geometric modeling method. Then the constraint random field modeling method and the random field modeling method without constrained parameters are compared and analyzed. A case study shows that the novel stochastic simulation method is an effective tool to describe the distribution characteristics of corrosion parameters and reflect the updated geological prospecting information. The influence of geological corrosion on the dam behavior can also be better analyzed by using the stochastic simulation method. At the same time, the unconfined random field ignores the sample location information and may lead to higher variability. Therefore, the constraint random field modeling method can provide a useful reference for the numerical analysis under complex geological conditions. 展开更多

At present, the existing dams are 40–45 years old and they are reaching their design life limit. Intensive geocryological processes(thermokarst, thermal erosion, frost heaving, suffosion, concentrated seepage along the voids left by melt ice and others) begin to develop at the early stages of construction. These processes are even more intensive under severe climatic conditions of the permafrost zone due to the large thermal and moisture gradients and the resulting complex thermal stress-strain state in the structures. Determining safety criteria is a critical and difficult task in dam safety management. The existing procedures need to be continuously refined and improved depending on dam importance class. Some researchers recommend introducing process development criteria(stability, destabilization, and extremality) for more objective assessment of dam safety, in addition to the existing two condition criteria. In other words, they call for a multi-factor dam – environment interaction system. A case study of safety declaration for an existing dam is presented. 展开更多

During the construction of earth-rock dam, mutual exclusive construction goals such as quality, safety, progress and cost all have influences on each other, with risk factors being everchanging as the construction progresses.Accurate identification of the risk factors,as well as clearing any possible effect that any risk factors might have on the construction project is the key and foundation to our cooperative control of the construction goals.According to the construction planning of earth-rock dam,the hall3 D structure was used to identify the potential changes of risk factors, and the possible means of any risk factors to interfere with the construction goals. The dynamic risk assessment index system is established by deploying the WBS-RBS(work breakdown structurerisk breakdown structure)method, aiming at the construction goals of earth-rock dam.The case study shows that the index system is very effective at risk management of earth-rock dam during construction, and relatively practicable. 展开更多

The infiltration of water into soil is one of the most important soil physical properties that affect soil erosion and the eco-environment, especially in the Pisha sandstone area on the Chinese Loess Plateau. We studied the one-dimensional vertical infiltration of water in three experimental soils, created by mixing Pisha sandstone with sandy soil, irrigation-silted soil, and loessial soil, at mass ratios of 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, and 1:5. Our objective was to compare water infiltration in the experimental soils and to evaluate the effect of Pisha sandstone on water infiltration. We assessed the effect by measuring soil bulk density(BD), porosity, cumulative infiltration, infiltration rate and saturated hydraulic conductivity(Ks). The results showed that Pisha sandstone decreased the infiltration rate and saturated hydraulic conductivity in the three experimental soils. Cumulative infiltration over time was well described by the Philip equation. Sandy soil mixed with the Pisha sandstone at a ratio of 1:3 had the best water-holding capacity. The results provided experimental evidence for the movement of soil water and a technical support for the reconstruction and reclamation of mining soils in the Pisha sandstone area. 展开更多

The acclimatization of plant xylem to altered environmental conditions has attracted considerable attention from researchers over several decades. Plants growing in natural environments must seek a balance between water uptake and the water loss of leaves from evaporation. Thus, the adaptation of xylem to different soil textures is important in maintaining plant water balance. In this study, we investigated the xylem changes of cotton(Gossypium herbaceum L.) xylem in sandy, clay and mixed soils. Results showed that soil texture had a significant effect on xylem vessel diameter and length of stems and roots. Compared with G. herbaceum growing in the clay soil, those plants growing in the sandy soil developed narrower and shorter xylem vessels in their roots, and had a higher percentage of narrow vessels in their stems. These changes resulted in a safer(i.e. less vulnerable to cavitation), but less-efficient water transport system when soil water availability was low, supporting the hydraulic safety versus efficiency trade-off hypothesis. Furthermore, in sandy and mixed soils, the root: shoot ratio of G. herbaceum increased twofold, which ensures the same efficiency of leaves. In summary, our finding indicates that the morphological plasticity of xylem structure in G. herbaceum has a major role in the acclimatization of this plant species to different soil textures. 展开更多

Physical modeling represents probably the oldest design tool in hydraulic engineering together with analytical approaches. In free surface flows, the similitude based upon a Froude similarity allows for a correct representation of the dominant forces, namely gravity and inertia. As a result fluid flow properties such as the capillary forces and the viscous forces might be incorrectly reproduced, affecting the air entrainment and transport capacity of a high-speed model flow. Small physical models operating under a Froude similitude systematically underestimate the air entrainment rate and air-water interfacial properties. To limit scale effects, minimal values of Reynolds or Weber number have to be respected. The present article summarizes the physical background of such limitations and their combination in terms of the Morton number. Based upon a literature review, the existing limits are presented and discussed, resulting in a series of more conservative recommendations in terms of air concentration scaling. For other air-water flow parameters, the selection of the criteria to assess scale effects is critical because some parameters (e.g., bubble sizes, turbulent scales) can be affected by scale effects, even in relatively large laboratory models. 展开更多

The correlation, between wall fluctuating pressure and fluctuating velocity, on the bed of plunging pool under the action of single and twin impinging jet, and their spectrum and turbulent scale are investigated in the paper by using 2-D LDA and the dynamic pressure scanning system of multiple points. It is found that the cross correlation between the horizontal fluctuating velocity and the fluctuating pressure of twin jet is bigger than that of single jet, and the spectrums of horizontal fluctuating velocity and fluctuating pressure obviously have approximately same dominant frequency. A new roller compacted concrete dam of Fengman Hydropower Station is to be built in the toe of the old dam, which was identified as a dangerous dam.The new dam during construction would be influenced by the high-speed flow discharged from the old dam, which is an important problem to be considered for the first time in China, and which would affect the construction of the whole project. Therefore,a series of erosion experiments were conducted in this article.A high-speed flow erosion test apparatus was developed for the erosion experiments of the new dam materials. The maximum jet velocity goes up to 40 m/s and the section area of the nozzle is 0.0025 m2.In the process of experiments, the equipment shows a good performance.Erosive wear tests for two types of materials used in the new dam,a roller compacted concrete and a distorted concrete with four kinds of ages were carried out with the flow velocity in the range of 30 m/s-35 m/s.Erosion parameters and erosion laws for the two types of concretes with different ages were determined, and a general relationship between the erosion rate and the flow velocity is obtained as:,with the velocity exponent between 3.33 and 3.93.It is concluded that the erosion resistance of the distorted concrete is better than that of the roller compacted concrete and the mechanical properties of the concretes of over 14 d age are influenced slightly by the water impact. The test results might serve as a practical technique guide for the safety of this project during its construction in the flood season. 展开更多

Understanding and quantifying unsaturated flow through fractures in rocky slope is important for design and construction of drainage system in large-scale hydraulic engineering. The data of the hysteretic relationship between capillary pressure and water saturation are primary for simulating unsaturated flow in fractures and analyzing the stability of high rocky slope. The drainage and imbibition curves are measured for a single fracture in granite sample got at construction site of the Three Gorges Project (TGP). The method used in this study for measuring the capillary pressure-saturation relationship, under the conditions of no normal load to rock sample, is generally following the laboratory technique developed by Reitsma and Kueper. A distinct entry pressure, indicating rise to initiate nonwetting phase invasion, was observed. The drainage curve is found to be well represented by van Genuchten porous media capillary pressure function. 展开更多
