The Aesthetic Relevance of Iconicity in the Visual Arts

Traditional attempts to define the concept of"art"has frequently meant finding their core characteristics or necessary and jointly sufficient conditions.Especially mimetic and formalist theories have had numerous proponents,arguing for the aesthetic relevance of iconicity or of formal aspects,respectively.In this paper,some basic tenets and problems of these approaches,most notably their essentialist biases,will be discussed.I shall put forward a moderate defense of the aesthetic relevance of mimetic or iconic features in the visual arts.Hereby,also studies from experimental aesthetics will be considered.

Analysis of Iconicity Base on Relevance Theory

Iconicity as one of the very important research items of cognitive linguistics refers to the natural, non-arbitrary rela?tionship between form and meaning. The study of iconicity has great significance of revealing the relationship between concept and cognition and can help people better understand the essence of language. This paper presents an analysis of the three iconicity principles- distance iconicity,quantity iconicity and sequencing iconicity-base on the relevance theory. The purpose of this pa?per is to offer a new dimension to iconicity analysis and finding more connections between the form of language and real mean?ing.

The Enlightenment of Iconicity to English Vocabulary Teaching

Iconicity has been a complement and challenge to Saussure’s language arbitrariness.So far,scholars have done numer⁃ous researches in the fields of discourse analysis,syntactic explanation by resorting to iconicity.Though some scholars have set foot on English vocabulary teaching from the perspective of iconicity,their viewpoints still remain to be polished and refined.This the⁃sis will indicate some errors existing in vocabulary teaching and introduce iconicity theories,the inspiration of which becomes an alternative approach in vocabulary teaching.

On Iconicity in Chinese

Iconicity principle provides a new framework for linguists to reexamine the relationship between the signifier and the signified.Apart from arbitrariness,iconicity principle also turns out to be true to some extent between form and meaning of linguistic symbols.This paper elaborates the iconicity principle in Chinese—mainly the sequencing iconicity,quantitative iconicity,symmetric iconicity,and asymmetric iconicity.

Diagrammatic Iconicity in EkeGusii: A relation between the structure of form and meaning

This paper mainly presents evidence for a relationship between language structure and meaning in EkeGusii,a Bantu language spoken in Kenya.The main argument is that the structure of language mirrors the structure of reality.A brief overview of other scholars demonstrates that diagrammatic iconicity shows universal tendencies.Five main ideas run down the discussion.Firstly,in EkeGusii,speakers sub-consciously cluster sounds around related meanings,evidencing gestalt and relative iconicity.Secondly,there is evidence of overlap of morphological and phonetic iconicity,an aspect of phonaesthesia.Thirdly,reduplication in certain infinitives demonstrates the reality of phono-iconicity in EkeGusii,augmented by unpleasant sound sequences.Fourthly,certain onomatopes in EkeGusii are actually diagrammatic,indicating that there is no one stop criterion for classifying overlapping types of icons.And finally,the paper posits that iconicity intersects with arbitrariness showing that language has both motivated and discrete symbols.

A Cognitive Study Based on Iconicity of Dispelling Lexical Fossilization of Chinese College Students

Fossilization is complex,repeated and durative,it appears in various aspects of Interlanguage like phonetics,syntax and semantics.College English vocabulary learning stage is an obvious period of lexical fossilization.This paper mainly uses qualitative research method to analyze dispelling lexical fossilization of Chinese college students based on iconicity of Langacker’s grammar,with the purpose of improving the“quantity”and“quality”of English vocabulary of Chinese college students and offering some pedagogical proposals to improve English vocabulary teaching effect of college students.

A Study on the Iconicity of English Language

Throughout the history, arbitrariness put forward by Saussure has been regarded as one of the most designing features of language. Saussure claimed that there is no interrelationship between the signifier and signified, or such relationship can't be testified but conventional. Later, the famous linguists Peirce and Haiman, who have made great contribution to the ever-heated theory of iconicity, reveal another feature of the language. The purpose of this paper is not to deny the arbitrary nature of language, but to suggest that the nature of language is a combination of arbitrariness and iconicity.

A Study of Iconicity in English Translation of Chinese Political Discourse:A Case Study of China’s Epic Journey from Poverty to Prosperity

Political discourse is an important component of Chinese discourse,and its translation criticism research is of great significance for telling the story of China well and establishing an international image.Iconicity is an important means to form the rhetorical effect,so the translation of political discourse must try to reproduce the iconicity of the original text.By analyzing the syntactic iconicity of the English version of the White paper China’s Epic Journey from Poverty to Prosperity,it is found that for the translation of quantitative iconicity,it is necessary to adjust the translation by synonym substitution or sentence pattern conversion on the basis of ensuring the representation of quantitative rhetoric.For the translation of sequential iconicity,it should strive for representing the logical sequence of the original text while enhancing the readability and rhetorical power of the translation.For the translation of distance iconicity,it is necessary to reproduce the delicacy of the original,meanwhile,to consider the emotional and rhetorical implication.The research emphasizes the balance between“syntactic iconicity of original text representation”and“appeal and readability of translated text”.The study is helpful to telling the“China’s poverty reduction story well”and translation practice of political discourse.

ICON/MIGHTI与TIMED/SABER探测温度数据的对比

ICON卫星为临近空间环境特性研究、建模和预报提供了新数据.通过对ICON/MIGHTI与TIMED/SABER在90~105 km高度探测温度数据的比较,计算两者的年平均温度偏差和均方根误差,同时分析月平均温度偏差在不同月份中随高度和纬度的分布情况,为MIGHTI和SABER温度探测数据在临近空间大气建模和预报应用提供参考依据.结果表明,MIGHTI和SABER的温度垂直廓线变化趋势基本吻合,数值上有所差异.在12°S-42°N范围内,MIGHTI探测温度与SABER相比,在90~93 km时偏低,偏差最大值约2.5 K,在93~105 km偏高,偏差的绝对值最大约10 K.在不同季节,白天的温度偏差通常高于夜晚.SABER和MIGHTI的月平均温度偏差随季节和纬度的变化显著,夏季时的月平均温度偏差最大,且温度的均方根误差最大.

Multimodal Poetic Iconicity in Jimmy's The Moon Forgets

This article draws on the theory of poetic iconicity as expounded by Margret.H.Freeman to offer a tentative study on how multimodality affects its realization through an analysis of a pictorial narrative by a Taiwan Residents writer—Jimmy’s The Moon Forgets.The analysis shows that,different from its performance in verbal texts,poetic iconicity in a multimodal literary work is achieved by tapping the immense potential inherent in pictorial-verbal conf igurations.Diagrammatic iconicity,seen in its narrative structure and in the multimodal configuration of the story,is found in this case to serve the global metaphor LIFE-DEATH IS A CYCLE and contribute to an aesthetically wild ecstasy.The metaphorical implications in relation to the theme within the scope of diagrammatic iconicity help constitute the ineffable charm of this pictorial fiction.Multimodal poetic iconicity—deploying diverse structural patterns and relational conf igurations to create an artistic resemblance to the abstract patterns in feelings and thoughts—is shown to be an important contributing factor in the effectiveness of the work’s literary communication.

The Phenomenological Semiotics of Iconicity and Pictoriality-Including Some Replies to My Critics

Instead of rejecting the notion of iconicity, as has often been the case in semiotics, we should inquire deeper into its specifi c nature, and also into the peculiar way in which it is manifested by pictures. In order to show why Umberto Eco, Nelson Goodman, and others were fundamentally wrong in their classical critique of iconicity, we will pursue a close reading of Peirce, but we will interpret his work in accordance with more recent fi ndings in cognitive and perceptual psychology, and we will modify the theory as a result of our interpretation. At the same time, we will rely on phenomenological insights, both those made explicit by Edmund Husserl in his studies of pictorial consciousness, and those which are implicit, notably in the work of the psychologist James Gibson. As a result, we will distinguish iconicity as such from iconic grounds and iconic signs, and we will delineate two very different kinds of iconic signs, which we will call primary and secondary iconic signs. Even so, pictorial iconicity has itspeculiarities, which we will also try to elucidate. In so doing, we will consider to what extent the linguistic model is still helpful, and in which respects it is misleading.

Iconicity and Mimicry:A Philological Excursus

Iconicity and mimicry represent two distinct but related fields in semiotic studies. Academic history shows both fields have crossed the border between Nature and Culture and have thus blurred the distinction of the two domains in certain aspects. In terms of etymology and history of ideas, both terms are traceable to classical antiquity: one to Plato, the other to Aristotle. In modern research history, iconicity and mimicry have curiously converged in Peirce. For all their supposedly close relationship, the two areas have rarely crisscrossed and to date there has not been sufficient attention paid to "iconicity in mimicry" or "mimicry as icon"—except in biosemiotic studies, probably because of the empirical visibility, transparency and hence selfevidence of their identification. As to the fledgling applied science of biomimetics, for all its enviable achievements in engineering and industry, researchers in the field have shown little interest in the conceptual history of mimicry, let alone that of iconicity. The pages that follow will offer a philological excursus, which hopes to bring Peirce into rapport with Plato, and link current "biomimicry" to its classical prototype in Aristotle's writings on animals.

The Aesthetics of Communication: Poetic Iconicity, the Voice of Enunciation, and the Art of Conversation

The analysis argues for a revised classification of discourse within mainstream communication scholarship that recognizes only content and relational elements.Using Posner’s(1982)semiotic work on poetic communication and drawing from Peirce’s trichotomy of signs,we see that an aesthetic dimension of a First subsists within all events of discourse.The significant effects/affects of Firstness transpire along a continuum depending upon the operative interpretants in a given context.Taking the voice of enunciation as a phonetic exemplar of an extra-linguistic aesthetic,I then examine the functions of poetic iconicity provided by Brandt’s(2013)typology,discussing it in relation to Peirce’s triadic structure and the art of conversation.Clarifying the semiotic and phenomenological affordances for each component of discourse provides a communicological perspective.Overall,such a treatment lends theoretical support for the commonsense assumption that conversation is an art form.Conversation potentializes aesthetic experience in Dewey’s sense of the term.

Iconicity of the Poetic Form:The Rhythm in a Short Story

This paper proposes that poetic form is a phonetic-conceptual integration that works from the iconic relations and cognitive mapping between the phonetic complex and the conceptualaffective complex,and that such mappings can be analyzed using the blending model by Fauconnier and Turner.Because literary expressions maintain a relation of iconicity with its meaning,it is possible to perform a metaphorical reading of the text as a single poetic form or a sole symbolic construct.As an example of the application of this model in literary analysis,some stylistic strategies from "Los inocentes",by Ines Arredondo,are analyzed with the purpose of showing the effects of iconic relationships that are created between the phonetic complex and the conceptual-affective complex at the moment of building the meaning of the literary text.

正畸后釉质脱矿染色模型用ICON渗透树脂处理的效果研究

目的探讨正畸后釉质脱矿染色模型用ICON渗透树脂处理对牙面颜色的影响。方法收集2022年2月—2023年2月赤峰学院附属医院口腔颌面外科门诊因正畸治疗拔除的前磨牙100颗,根据处理方法的不同将其分为3组,分别为酸蚀粘接托槽后脱矿着色后去除托槽及牙齿表面的粘结剂后置于人工唾液中的A组(40颗牙)、酸蚀粘接托槽后脱矿着色后去除托槽及牙齿表面的粘结剂后使用ICON渗透树脂处理的B组(40颗牙)和直接置于人工唾液中的C组(20颗牙),比较3组处理前、粘接托槽脱后和ICON处理后牙齿变化。结果A组、B组、C组的ΔE*分别为(3.53±0.53)、(2.48±0.63)、(1.65±0.19),三者比较,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。再处理后3组牙釉质硬度值大小为:C组>B组>A组,组间对比差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。处理后3组间表面粗糙度值大小:A组>B组>C组,组间对比差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。结论固定矫治中酸蚀处理、粘结剂及金属托槽均会对牙面颜色产生影响。ICON渗透树脂对牙釉质脱矿有较好的修复效果,可明显改善患者牙齿颜色,有利于提高牙齿美观度硬度。

Cognitive principle and discoursal coherence

Cohesion, the main form of discoursal coherence, has traditionally been analyzed from the perspective of functional linguistics and its study mainly focuses on surface explicit cohesive devices. We hold that it is of much higher explanatory power to study discoursal coherence from the point of view of cognitive linguistics and the construction of discoursal coherence has been restricted by the cognitive principles like iconicity, cognitive metaphor and cognitive metonymy. Based upon the above analysis, the article discusses show such cognitive principles act as cohesive devices and play a role in the formation of discoursal coherence.

Icon memory research under different time pressures and icon quantities based on event-related potential

In order to obtain related brain electrical components and neural bases of physiology assessment of icon elements in a digital human-computer interface the modified sample-delay matching task experimental paradigm is used under different time pressures 4 000 and 2 000 ms and different icon quantities three five and ten icons on icon memory based on event-related potential ERP technology.Experimental results demonstrate that P300 has significant volatility changes and the maximum amplitude around the middle line of the parietal area PZ and P200 has obvious volatility changes around the middle line of the frontal and central area FCZ during icon cognition.P300 and P200 amplitudes increase as tasks become more difficult.Thus P300 latency is positively correlated with task difficulty. ERP research on the characteristics of icon memory will be an important reference standard in guiding user neurocognitive behavior and physiology assessment on interface usability.
