Purpose:A new point of view in the study of impact is introduced.Design/methodology/approach:Using fundamental theorems in real analysis we study the convergence of well-known impact measures.Findings:We show that pointwise convergence is maintained by all well-known impact bundles(such as the h-,g-,and R-bundle)and that theμ-bundle even maintains uniform convergence.Based on these results,a classification of impact bundles is given.Research limitations:As for all impact studies,it is just impossible to study all measures in depth.Practical implications:It is proposed to include convergence properties in the study of impact measures.Originality/value:This article is the first to present a bundle classification based on convergence properties of impact bundles. 展开更多

This article offers a discussion of the meaning,assessment,and measurement of impact in disaster risk reduction.It begins with a historical perspective on the impact of learned work in times when orthodoxy posed sever... This article offers a discussion of the meaning,assessment,and measurement of impact in disaster risk reduction.It begins with a historical perspective on the impact of learned work in times when orthodoxy posed severe limits on the impact of new thinking.Regarding the modern age,the article explains why impact is considered important and how it might be recognized when it occurs,including a tentative classification of types of impact.The question of whether impact can truly be measured remains pending,as the answer is diffuse and dependent on many different circumstances.Further sections consider the relationship between impact and mainstreaming and the question of whether a piece of work should be regarded as having impact if its effects are negative rather than positive.Next,impact is considered in terms of whom it benefits.Given the large number of possible reservations about the concept,the question is raised as to whether too much emphasis is given to the impact of research and scholarship.Finally,some suggestions are offered regarding how to obtain a better indication of what the impact of an academic study actually is. 展开更多

This paper compares ongoing research results on hydrologic performance to common design and crediting criteria, and recommends a change in direction from a static to a dynamic perspective to fully credit the performance of green infrastructure. Examples used in this article are primarily stormwater control measures built for research on the campus of Villanova University [1,2]. Evidence is presented demonstrating that the common practice of crediting water volume based on soil and surface storage underestimates the performance potential, and suggests that the profession move to a more dynamic approach that incorporates exfiltration and evapotranspiration. The framework for a dynamic approach is discussed, with a view to broaden our design focus by including climate, configuration and the soil surroundings. The substance of this work was presented as a keynote speech at the 2016 international Low Impact Development Conference in Beijing China [3]. 展开更多
