A three-dimensional (3-D) wheel-rail rolling contact model with a wheel fiat was built using commercial software Hypermesh, and the dynamic finite element simulation was conducted using LS-DYNA 3D/explicit code. Influences of the train speed, flat length and axle load on the vertical wheel-rail impact response were discussed, respectively. The results show that the maximum vertical wheel-rail impact force induced by the wheel flat is higher than that generated by the perfect wheel, and these two dynamic impact forces are much greater than the static axle load. Besides, the maximum von Mises equivalent stress and maximum equivalent plastic strain are observed on the wheel-rail contact surface, and both of them as well as the maximum wheel-rail impact force are sensitive to train speed, fiat length and axle load. 展开更多

Purpose–In service,the periodic clashes of wheel flat against the rail result in large wheel/rail impact force and high-frequency vibration,leading to severe damage on the wheelset,rail and track structure.This study aims to analyze characteristics and dynamic impact law of wheel and rail caused by wheel flat of high-speed trains.Design/methodology/approach–A full-scale high-speed wheel/rail interface test rig was used for the test of the dynamic impact of wheel/rail caused by wheel flat of high-speed train.With wheel flats of different lengths,widths and depths manually set around the rolling circle of the wheel tread,and wheel/rail dynamic impact tests to the flats in the speed range of 0–400 km/h on the rig were conducted.Findings–As the speed goes up,the flat induced the maximum of the wheel/rail dynamic impact force increases rapidly before it reaches its limit at the speed of around 35 km/h.It then goes down gradually as the speed continues to grow.The impact of flat wheel on rail leads to 100–500 Hz middle-frequency vibration,and around 2,000 Hz and 6,000 Hz high-frequency vibration.In case of any wheel flat found during operation,the train speed shall be controlled according to the status of the flat and avoid the running speed of 20 km/h–80 km/h as much as possible.Originality/value–The research can provide a new method to obtain the dynamic impact of wheel/rail caused by wheel flat by a full-scale high-speed wheel/rail interface test rig.The relations among the flat size,the running speed and the dynamic impact are hopefully of reference to the building of speed limits for HSR wheel flat of different degrees. 展开更多

Impact of Flooding on Wheel Shafts and Wheel Bearings in Abraka, and Way Forward

This study aimed at examining the impact of flooding on wheel-bearings and wheel-shaft in Abraka. The empirical and survey research designs were employed for the study. 42 checklists were dropped at the various mechanic workshops to collect data on the number of wheel-shaft and wheel-bearing changed weekly for five years and flood depths were measured for a period of five years. The simple linear regression was employed for data analysis. Findings include that: when the flood depth is at 0.10 feet in January the number of wheel-shaft and wheel-bearings changed is 396 and 220 pcs respectively. When flood depth is at 4.57 feet in August 3749 shafts and 1451 bearings were changed respectively. The regressions analysis showed that the relationship between wheel-shaft and flooding was r = 0.64, and the model was significant at p (0.00) < 0.05. Similarly, regressions analysis showed that the relationship between wheel-bearing and flooding was r = 0.62, and the model was significant at p (0.00) < 0.05. It therefore follows that impairment of wheel-shaft and wheel-bearing significantly depends on flooding events in Abraka. The following recommendations were made: construction of street side channels to drain of flood from the streets;checking the shafts and wheels hubs at regular intervals and re-grease when necessary etc. 展开更多

Shrinkage cavity may be detrimental to mechanical performances of casting parts.As a consequence,design engineers often use overly large safety factors in many designs due to insufficient understanding of quantitative effects of shrinkage cavity defects.In this paper,process of Al alloy wheel impact test was computationally analyzed for both the wheel models with and without shrinkage cavity defects.Based on shrinkage cavity data obtained from industrial CT (Computerized Tomography),the shrinkage cavity defects were modeled with SSM (Shape Simplification Method),which reconstructs shrinkage cavity defects to hollow spheroid primitives.After the impact simulation was conducted,the results show that under impact test condition,the wheel considering shrinkage cavity defects may fracture while the sound-assumed wheel may not. 展开更多

Using the finite element code ANSYS/LS-DYNA, a dynamic finite element modelwith an elastic-linear-kinematic-hardening plastic material is established to analyzeelastic-plastic stresses in the railhead in the impact process of wheel and rail occurring at thegap of rail joint. The model is based on the discrete elastic support condition of the rails, whichis suitable for the actual situation of wheel/track rolling contact. In the analysis the influencesof axle load, yield stress and tangent modulus of rail material on the stresses and strains areinvestigated in detail. The distribution of stresses and strains in the jointed railhead are given.It is found that the axle load, yield stress and tangent modulus of rail material greatly affect thestresses and strains in the railhead during impacting. The study provides a reliable method anduseful datum for the further research on fatigue and wear of railhead and improving the rail jointmode. 展开更多

Derailment of trains is not unusual all around the world,especially in developing countries,due to unidentified track or rolling stock faults that cause massive casualties each year.For this purpose,a proper condition monitoring system is essential to avoid accidents and heavy losses.Generally,the detection and classification of railway track surface faults in real-time requires massive computational processing and memory resources and is prone to a noisy environment.Therefore,in this paper,we present the development of a novel embedded system prototype for condition monitoring of railway track.The proposed prototype system works in real-time by acquiring railway track surface images and performing two tasks a)detect deformation(i.e.,faults)like squats,shelling,and spalling using the contour feature algorithm and b)the vibration signature on that faulty spot by synchronizing acceleration and image data.A new illumination scheme is also proposed to avoid the sunlight reflection that badly affects the image acquisition process.The contour detection algorithm is applied here to detect the uneven shapes and discontinuities in the geometrical structure of the railway track surface,which ultimately detects unhealthy regions.It works by converting Red,Green,and Blue(RGB)images into binary images,which distinguishes the unhealthy regions by making them white color while the healthy regions in black color.We have used the multiprocessing technique to overcome the massive processing and memory issues.This embedded system is developed on Raspberry Pi by interfacing a vision camera,an accelerometer,a proximity sensor,and a Global Positioning System(GPS)sensors(i.e.,multi-sensors).The developed embedded system prototype is tested in real-time onsite by installing it on a Railway Inspection Trolley(RIT),which runs at an average speed of 15 km/h.The functional verification of the proposed system is done successfully by detecting and recording the various railway track surface faults.An unhealthy frame’s onsite detection processing time was recorded at approximately 25.6ms.The proposed system can synchronize the acceleration data on specific railway track deformation.The proposed novel embedded system may be beneficial for detecting faults to overcome the conventional manual railway track condition monitoring,which is still being practiced in various developing or underdeveloped countries. 展开更多

现有移动空调中通常利用打水轮的离心雾化作用将冷凝水抛洒至冷凝器高温翅片上,受热蒸发后经排风管排出,但是其雾化能力有限,在高湿工况下仍需进行人工排水。研究提出了一种新的雾化方式(微孔高速射流撞击雾化/喷管雾化),在高湿工况(t=2... 现有移动空调中通常利用打水轮的离心雾化作用将冷凝水抛洒至冷凝器高温翅片上,受热蒸发后经排风管排出,但是其雾化能力有限,在高湿工况下仍需进行人工排水。研究提出了一种新的雾化方式(微孔高速射流撞击雾化/喷管雾化),在高湿工况(t=27℃、RH=90%)下进行了免排水能力及移动空调性能测试,对比了打水轮雾化与微孔高速射流撞击雾化这两种方式对移动空调冷凝水排除能力及制冷系统的影响。结果表明,相较于不打水而言,采用喷管雾化制冷量增加了3.16%(打水轮1.77%)、EER增加了11.70%(打水轮6.62%),能做到24 h不停机连续运行(打水轮6 h)。因此采用喷管雾化在提升整机能效和免排水能力方面更具优势。 展开更多
