This paper presents the use of digital image analysis combined with fractal theory as a tool to quantify the particle morphology and surface texture of two types of quartz sands widely used in the region of Vitória, Espírito Santo, southeast of Brazil. The two investigated sands are sampled from different locations. The purpose of this paper is to present a simple, straightforward, reliable and reproducible methodology that can identify representative sandy soil texture parameters. The test results of the soil samples of the two sands separated by sieving into six size fractions are presented and discussed. The main advantages of the adopted methodology are its simplicity, reliability of the results, and relatively low cost. The results show that sands from the coastal spit(BS) have a greater degree of roundness and a smoother surface texture than river sands(RS). The values obtained in the test are statistically analyzed, and again it is confirmed that the BS sand has a slightly greater degree of sphericity than that of the RS sand. Moreover, the RS sand with rough surface texture has larger specific surface area values than the similar BS sand, which agree with the obtained roughness fractal dimensions. The consistent experimental results demonstrate that image analysis combined with fractal theory is an accurate and efficient method to quantify the differences in particle morphology and surface texture of quartz sands.展开更多

Based on the periodic orbit theory, this paper proposes a novel security analysis method. The periodic orbits theory indicates that the fundamental frequency of the spiraling orbits is the natural frequency of associated linearized system, which is decided by the parameters of the chaotic system. Thus, it is possible to recover the plaintext of secure communication systems based on chaotic shift keying by getting the average time on the spiraling orbits. Analysis and simulation results show that the security analysis method can break chaos shift keying secure communication systems, which use the parameters as keys.展开更多

The strain-displacement relations (kine-matic equations) are calculated by the displacement fields of the twisted micro-beam. The strain gradient theory (SGT) is used to implement the size dependent effect at micro-scale. Finally, using an energy method and Hamilton's principle, the governing equations of motion for the twisted micro-beam are derived. Natural frequencies and the wave prop- agation speed of the twisted micro-beam are calculated with an analytical method. Also, the natural frequency, the phase speed, the cut-off frequency, and the wave number of the twisted micro-beam are obtained by considering three material length scale parameters, the rate of twist angle, the thickness, the length of twisted micro-beam, and the elastic medium. The results of this work indicate that the phase speed in a twisted micro-beam increases with an increase in the rate of twist angle. Moreover, the wave number is in- versely related with the thickness of micro-beam. Meanwhile, it is directly related to the wave propagation frequency. Increasing the rate of twist angle causes the increase in the natural frequency especially with higher thickness. The effect of the twist angle rate on the group velocity is observed at a lower wave propagation frequency.展开更多

In the quantitative risk analysis, the failure models are difficult to establish through traditional statistical methods. Hence, the calculation of the occurrence probability of small sample events is often met with great uncertainty. In this study, the Bayesian statistical method is implemented to analyze the oil and gas leakages of FPSO internal turret, which is a typical small sample risk but could lead to severe losses.According to the corresponding failure mechanism, two Bayesian statistical models using the Weibull distribution and logarithmic normal distribution as the population distribution are established, and the posterior distribution of the corresponding parameters is calculated. The optimal Bayesian statistical model is determined according to the Bayesian information criterion and Akaike criterion. On the basis of the determined optimal model, the corresponding reliability index is solved to provide basic data for the subsequent risk assessments of FPSO systems.展开更多

The underlying fact is that there does not exist the absolute zero fluid-volume. Therefore, the physical object corresponding to the absolute point is just the uniform fluid-particle. The fluid-particle, in general, corresponds to the monad. The uniform fluid-particle corresponds to the uniform monad, while the nonuniform fluid-particle to the nonuniform monad. There are two kinds of the differentiations, one is based on the absolute point, and the other based on the monad. The former is adopted in the Navier-Stokes equations, and the latter in the fundamental equations presented in this paper for the nonstandard analysis theory of turbulence. The continuity of fluid is elucidated by virtue of the concepts of the fluid-particle and fluid-particle at a lower level. Furthermore, the characters of the continuity in two cases, i.e. in the standard and nonstandard analyses, are presented in this paper. And the difference in discretization between the Navier-Stokes equations and the fundamental equations given herein is also pointed out.展开更多

Main advantages of the MCST over the classical theory (CT) are the inclusion of the asymmetric couple stress tensor and the consideration of only one material length scale parameter. Based on the nonlinear von Karman assumption, the governing equations of equilibrium for the micro-classical plate consid- ering midplane displacements are derived based on the minimum principle of potential energy. Using the DQM, the biaxial and shear critical buckling loads of the micro-plate for various boundary conditions are obtained. Accuracy of the obtained results is validated by comparing the solutions with those reported in the literature. A parametric study is conducted to show the effects of the aspect ratio, the side-to-thickness ratio, Eringen's nonlocal parameter, the material length scale parameter, Young's modulus of the surface layer, the surface residual stress, the polymer matrix coefficients, and various boundary conditions on the dimensionless uniaxial, biaxial, and shear critical buckling loads. The results indicate that the critical buckling loads are strongly sensitive to Eringen's nonlocal parameter, the material length scale parameter, and the surface residual stress effects, while the effect of Young's modulus of the surface layer on the critical buckling load is negligible. Also, considering the size dependent effect causes the increase in the stiffness of the orthotropic micro-plate. The results show that the critical biaxial buckling load increases with an increase in G12/E2 and vice versa for E1/E2. It is shown that the nonlinear biaxial buckling ratio decreases as the aspect ratio increases and vice versa for the buckling amplitude. Because of the most lightweight micro-composite materials with high strength/weight and stiffness/weight ratios, it is anticipated that the results of the present work are useful in experimental characterization of the mechanical properties of micro-composite plates in the aircraft industry and other engineering applications.展开更多

The transducer membrane consists of a piezoelectric layer, a passive layer and two electrode layers. The nonlinearities of the piezoelectric layer caused by electrostriction under a strong electric field are analyzed. Because the thickness of the transducer membrane is on the microscale, the size dependence of the deformation behavior is evaluated using the couple stress theory. The results show that the optimal ratio of the top electrode diameter and the membrane diameter is around 0.674. It is also found that this optimal value does not depend on any other parameters if the thicknesses of the two electrodes are negligible compared with those of the piezo- electric and passive layers. In addition, the nonlinearities of the piezoelectric layer will become stronger along with the increase of the electric field, which means that softening of the membrane stiffness occurs when a strong external electric field is applied. Meanwhile, the optimal thickness ratio for the passive layer and the piezoelectric layer is not equal to 1.0 which is usually adopted by previous researchers. Because there exists size dependence of membrane deforma-tion, the optimal value of this thickness ratio needs to be greater than 1.0 on the microscale.展开更多

文摘Planar sliding is one of the frequently observed types of failure in rock slopes.Kinematic analysis is a classic and widely used method to examine the potential failure modes in rock masses. The accuracy of planar sliding kinematic analysis is significantly influenced by the value assigned to the lateral limit angleγlim. However, the assignment ofγlim is currently used generally based on an empirical criterion. This study aims to propose an approach for determining the value ofγlim in deterministic and probabilistic kinematic planar sliding analysis.A new perspective is presented to reveal thatγlim essentially influences the probability of forming a potential planar sliding block. The procedure to calculate this probability is introduced using the block theory method. It is found that the probability is correlated with the number of discontinuity sets presented in rock masses. Thus, different values ofγlim for rock masses with different sets of discontinuities are recommended in both probabilistic and deterministic planar sliding kinematic analyses;whereas a fixed value ofγlim is commonly assigned to different types of rock masses in traditional method. Finally,an engineering case was used to compare the proposed and traditional kinematic analysis methods. The error rates of the traditional method vary from 45%to 119%,while that of the proposed method ranges between 1%and 17%.Therefore,it is likely that the proposed method is superior to the traditional one.

文摘The load and corrosion caused by the harsh marine environment lead to the severe degradation of offshore equipment and to their compromised security and reliability. On the basis of the determined optimal model, the corresponding reliability index is solved to provide basic data for the subsequent risk assessments of FPSO systems.

文摘Main mathematical concepts and their physical foundation in the nonstandard analysis theory of turbulence are presented and discussed. And the difference in discretization between the Navier-Stokes equations and the fundamental equations given herein is also pointed out.

文摘Advanced mathematical tools are used to conduct research on the kinematics analysis of hybrid mechanisms, and the generalized analysis method and concise kinematics transfer matrix are obtained. In this study, first, according to the kinematics analysis of serial mechanisms, the basic principles of Lie groups and Lie algebras are briefly explained in dealing with the spatial switching and differential operations of screw vectors. Then, based on the standard ideas of Lie operations, the method for kinematics analysis of parallel mechanisms is derived, and Jacobian matrix and Hessian matrix are formulated recursively and in a closed form. Then, according to the mapping relationship between the parallel joints and corresponding equivalent series joints,a forward kinematics analysis method and two inverse kinematics analysis methods of hybrid mechanisms are examined.A case study is performed to verify the calculated matrices wherein a humanoid hybrid robotic arm with a parallel-series-parallel configuration is considered as an example. The results of a simulation experiment indicate that the obtained formulas are exact and the proposed method for kinematics analysis of hybrid mechanisms is practically feasible.

文摘The size-dependent effect on the biaxial and shear nonlinear buckling analysis of an isotropic and orthotropic micro-plate based on the surface stress, the modified couple stress theory (MCST), and the nonlocal elasticity theories using the differential quadrature method (DQM) is presented. Because of the most lightweight micro-composite materials with high strength/weight and stiffness/weight ratios, it is anticipated that the results of the present work are useful in experimental characterization of the mechanical properties of micro-composite plates in the aircraft industry and other engineering applications.

文摘This paper studies the static deformation behavior of a piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducer (PMUT) actuated by a strong external electric field. Because there exists size dependence of membrane deforma-tion, the optimal value of this thickness ratio needs to be greater than 1.0 on the microscale.
文摘This study focusses on establishing the finite element model based on a new hyperbolic sheareformation theory to investigate the static bending, free vibration, and buckling of the functionally graded sandwich plates with porosity. The novel sandwich plate consists of one homogenous ceramic core and two different functionally graded face sheets which can be widely applied in many fields of engineering and defence technology. The discrete governing equations of motion are carried out via Hamilton’s principle and finite element method. The computation program is coded in MATLAB software and used to study the mechanical behavior of the functionally graded sandwich plate with porosity. The present finite element algorithm can be employed to study the plates with arbitrary shape and boundary conditions. The obtained results are compared with available results in the literature to confirm the reliability of the present algorithm. Also,a comprehensive investigation of the effects of several parameters on the bending, free vibration, and buckling response of functionally graded sandwich plates is presented. The numerical results shows that the distribution of porosity plays significant role on the mechanical behavior of the functionally graded sandwich plates。
