BACKGROUND The relation between orthodontic treatment and temporomandibular disorders(TMDs)is under debate;the management of TMD during orthodontic treatment has always been a challenge. If TMD symptoms occur during orthodontic treatment,an immediate pause of orthodontic adjustments is recommended;the treatment can resume when the symptoms are managed and stabilized.CASE SUMMARY This case report presents a patient(26-year-old,female)with angle class I,skeletal class II and TMDs.The treatment was a hybrid of clear aligners, fixed appliances and temporary anchorage devices(TADs).After 3 mo resting and treatment on her TMD,the patient’s TMD symptom alleviated, but her anterior occlusion displayed deep overbite. Therefore, the fixed appliances with TAD were used to correct the anterior deep-bite and level maxillary and mandibular deep curves. After the levelling, the patient showed dual bite with centric relation and maximum intercuspation discrepancy on her occlusion. After careful examination of temporomandibular joints(TMJ)position, the stable bite splint and Invisible Mandibular Advancement appliance were used to reconstruct her occlusion.Eventually, the improved facial appearance and relatively stable occlusion were achieved. The 1-year follow-up records showed there was no obvious change in TMJ morphology, and her occlusion was stable.CONCLUSION TMD screening and monitoring is of great clinical importance in the TMD susceptible patients.Hybrid treatment with clear aligners and fixed appliances and TADs is an effective treatment modality for the complex cases. 展开更多

Class 1 integrons are vital mobile genetic elements involved in the environmental transmission of antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs).However, knowledge about the diversity and abundance of class 1 integrons and gene cassettes during drinking water treatment and distribution is still limited. In this study,we aimed to uncover the prevalence of class 1 integrons in the drinking water treatment and distribution systems with the combination of culture-dependent and culture-independent methods.Further,we applied the nanopore sequencing method to characterize the diversity and arrangement of ARGs carried by class 1 integron-associated gene cassettes.A total of 42 isolates were inti-positive among the 208 strains isolated from drinking water, which tended to confer multi-drug resistance compared with intll-negative isolates. The absolute abundance of the intl1 average i.15×10^(9) copies/L in the source water and underwent the most significant reduction of over 99.9%after liquid chiorine disinfection.Furthermore, nanopore sequencing revealed that the class 1 integron-associated gene cassettes carried 51 subtypes of ARGs in drinking water, mainly conferring resistance to aminoglycosides and trimethoprim. The treatment processes, especially liquid chlorine disinfection, reduced most of the ARGs carried by gene cassettes, though some of the ARG subtypes persisted along the treatment and distribution ike aac(6)-Il,aadA,and dfrB2.The antibiotic resistance gene cassette array laac(6')-Ⅱ arr was most frequently detected, especially in the chlorinated water. This study underlined that drinking water was potential reservoir for integron-mediated ARGs transfer, indicating that the health risks of resistance gene cassettes in class 1 integrons deserved urgent attention. 展开更多

This study analyzed the difference between using a downward breaststroke kick and a horizontal breaststroke kick in a sample of world class elite swimmers. We compared average muscle activity of the gluteus maximus, quadriceps femoris(vastus medialis and rectus femoris),hamstring/long head of the biceps femoris, gastrocnemius medialis, rectus abdominal, and erector spinae when using the downward breaststroke kick technique. We find that when this sample of swimmers utilized the downward breaststroke kick, max speed and velocity per stroke increased, measured by 12,788 EMG samples, where the results are highly correlated to duration of the aerodynamic buoyant force in breaststroke kick technique. The increases in performance observed from measuring the world class elite swimmers is highly correlated to the duration of the kick aerodynamic buoyant force.Among this sample of elite swimmers, the longer a swimmer demonstrates a buoyant force breaststroke kick, the lower the time in a 100 breaststroke. 展开更多

The book Becoming a Reading Teacher:Connecting Research and Practice aims to encourage readers to regard reading as a lifelong habit. To bridge the gap between teachers and researchers, this book is structured around four parts:reading as a linguistic process, reading as a personal experience, reading as a collective experience, and reading as a classroom practice. The definition of a reading teacher can be interpreted in two ways:the teacher who builds readings into the lesson and the teacher who provides the opportunity for learners to be readers, but who is a reader themselves.Such teachers regard reading as a lifelong learning habit and pass on the enthusiasm to learners, eventually creating a reading culture beyond the classroom. However, the necessity for reading teachers to participate in the research may be explained as follows.Firstly, new research may change one’s mind. What’s more, research allows teachers to turn their difficulties, surprises, and challenges into questions, and to seek answers to those questions. In addition, research helps teachers overcome the challenges in teaching by discovering new strategies.Research can also help to prove teachers’choices and decisions in teaching.Secondly, research allows teachers to see the role they play in the bigger picture.Research connects teachers with others and gives them a broader and shared perspective on their questions and experiences.Last but not least, research informs and promotes changes in policy, thinking, and so on. 展开更多

The activity of occipitotemporal regions involved in linguistic reading processes, such as the ventral occipitotemporal cortex(vOT),is believed to exhibit strong interactions during higher-order language processing, specifically in the connectivity between the occipital gyrus and the temporal gyrus. In this study,we utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI)with psychophysiological interaction(PPI)and dynamic causal modeling(DCM)to investigate the functional and effective connectivity in the occipitotemporal network during speed reading. We conducted the experiment with native Japanese speakers who underwent and without speed-reading training and subsequently performed established reading tasks at different speeds(slow, medium, and fast)while undergoing 3-Tesla Siemens fMRI.Our activation analyses revealed significant changes in occipital and temporal regions as reading speed increased, indicating functional connectivity within the occipitotemporal network.DCM results further demonstrated more intricate effective connections and high involvement within the occipitotemporal pathway:(1)reading signals originated from the inferior occipital gyrus(iO),distributed to the vOT and the posterior superior temporal sulcus(pSTS),and then gathered in the anterior superior temporal sulcus(aSTS);(2)reading speed loads had modulation effects on the pathways from the aSTS to vOT and from the iO to vOT.These findings highlight the complex connectivity and dynamic interactions within the occipitotemporal network during speed-reading processes. 展开更多

This experimental study investigated how text difficulty and different working memory capacity(WMC)affected Chinese EFL learners’reading comprehension and their tendency to engage in task-unrelated thoughts, that is,mind wandering(MW),in the course of reading.Sixty first-year university non-English majors participated in the study.A two-factor mixed experimental design of 2(text difficulty:difficult and simple)×2(WMC:high/large and low/small)was employed. Results revealed that 1)the main and interaction effects of WMC and text difficulty on voluntary MW were significant, whereas those on involuntary MW were not;2)while reading the easy texts, the involuntary MW of high-WMC individuals was less frequent than that of low-WMC ones, whereas while reading the difficult ones, the direct relationship between WMC and involuntary MW was not found;and that 3)high-WMC individuals had a lower overall rate of MW and better reading performance than low-WMC individuals did,but with increasing text difficulty, their rates of overall MW and voluntary MW were getting higher and higher, and the reading performance was getting lower and lower. These results lend support to WM theory and have pedagogical implications for the instruction of L2 reading. 展开更多

The popularity of the Internet of Things(IoT)has enabled a large number of vulnerable devices to connect to the Internet, bringing huge security risks. As a network-level security authentication method, device fingerprint based on machine learning has attracted considerable attention because it can detect vulnerable devices in complex and heterogeneous access phases. However, flexible and diversified IoT devices with limited resources increase dif-ficulty of the device fingerprint authentication method executed in IoT,because it needs to retrain the model network to deal with incremental features or types. To address this problem,a device fingerprinting mechanism based on a Broad Learning System(BLS)is proposed in this paper. The mechanism firstly characterizes IoT devices by traffic analysis based on the identifiable differences of the traffic data of IoT devices, and extracts feature parameters of the traffic packets.A hierarchical hybrid sampling method is designed at the preprocessing phase to improve the imbalanced data distribution and reconstruct the fingerprint dataset. The complexity of the dataset is reduced using Principal Component Analysis(PCA)and the device type is identified by training weights using BLS.The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve state-of-the-art accuracy and spend less training time than other existing methods. 展开更多

The aim of this study was to carry out a dynamic simulation of the energy and environmental performance of a built space system, with a view to assessing its energy and environmental class. The use of a simulation and modeling tool, supported by various methodological references, formed the basis of our approach. Adopting a systemic perspective, we described the structural and functional aspects of the systems making up built spaces, as well as the associated energy flows. Our approach was also based on a typology, taking into account typical days, structural and functional configurations at different scales and angles of observation. The analysis tool we developed in Java was applied to the built space system of the Patte d’Oie university campus in Ouagadougou. Annual electricity consumption was measured at 124387.34 kWh, closely aligned with the average annual electricity bill (125224.31 kWh), with a maximum relative deviation of 1%, followed by a carbon emission balance of 58337.66 kg eq CO2 per year. This validation confirmed the effectiveness of our tool. In addition, following the analysis of electricity consumption using our tool, the university campus was classified in energy class B and environmental class C. These results will be based on the emission factors of the energy mix of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) territory, with particular emphasis on Burkina Faso. 展开更多

Extensive numerical simulations and scaling analysis are performed to investigate competitive growth between the linear and nonlinear stochastic dynamic growth systems, which belong to the Edwards–Wilkinson(EW) and Kardar–Parisi–Zhang(KPZ) universality classes, respectively. The linear growth systems include the EW equation and the model of random deposition with surface relaxation(RDSR), the nonlinear growth systems involve the KPZ equation and typical discrete models including ballistic deposition(BD), etching, and restricted solid on solid(RSOS). The scaling exponents are obtained in both the(1 + 1)-and(2 + 1)-dimensional competitive growth with the nonlinear growth probability p and the linear proportion 1-p. Our results show that, when p changes from 0 to 1, there exist non-trivial crossover effects from EW to KPZ universality classes based on different competitive growth rules. Furthermore, the growth rate and the porosity are also estimated within various linear and nonlinear growths of cooperation and competition. 展开更多
