There is abundant litera...This paper presents some opportunities to improve feedwater system efficiency for industrial boilers, usually consisting of multistage centrifugal pumps driven by three-phase induction motors. There is abundant literature on the efficiency in steam boilers. However, few deal exclusively with feedwater systems. The total horsepower in boiler feed pumps and the corresponding energy consumption estimated for Brazilian industries are as follows: 110.5 MWE of motor driven power and a yearly electricity consumption of 442 GWh for a population of 7,800 steam boilers, approximately. It is estimated that there can be an efficiency improvement in feedwater systems for industrial boilers of 30% on average. To a large extent, these opportunities reside in older boilers that are very common in the Brazilian industrial sector. The most common causes for the low efficiency of feedwater systems are: the control loop of the feedwater, oversized boilers and excessive operational pressure set. Sometimes, the boiler feedwater system can present more than one problem simultaneously. Any kind of solution involves some speed regulation, new pump and number of pumps. Each problem generation facilities were selected in which common inefficiencies cases, the improvement in efficiency can get to 37%. form of intervention in boiler feed pumps, such as: impeller trim, may have more than one solution. Two industrial grade biomass boilers were selected to investigate the characteristi...Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) are carcinogenic or mutagenic and are important toxic pollutants in the flue gas of boilers. Two industrial grade biomass boilers were selected to investigate the characteristics of particulate-bound PAHs: one biomass boiler retro-fitted from an oil boiler(BB1) and one specially designed(BB2) biomass boiler. One coal-fired boiler was also selected for comparison. By using a dilution tunnel system, particulate samples from boilers were collected and 10 PAH species were analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry(GC–MS). The total emission factors(EFs) of PAHs ranged from 0.0064 to0.0380 mg/kg, with an average of 0.0225 mg/kg, for the biomass boiler emission samples. The total PAH EFs for the tested coal-fired boiler were 1.8 times lower than the average value of the biomass boilers. The PAH diagnostic ratios for wood pellets and straw pellets were similar.The ratio of indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene/[indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene + benzo(g,h,i)perylene] for the two biomass boilers was lower than those of the reference data for other burning devices, which can probably be used as an indicator to distinguish the emission of biomass boilers from that of industrial coal-fired boilers and residential stoves. The toxic potential of the emission from wood pellet burning was higher than that from straw pellet burning, however both of them were much lower than residential stove exhausts.展开更多
In a gas/particle two-phase test facility, a three-component particle-dynamics anemometer was used to measure the characteristics of gas/particle two-phase flows in a 29 megawatt (MW) pulverized coal industrial boiler...In a gas/particle two-phase test facility, a three-component particle-dynamics anemometer was used to measure the characteristics of gas/particle two-phase flows in a 29 megawatt (MW) pulverized coal industrial boiler equipped with a new type of swirling pulverized coal burner. The distributions of three-dimensional gas/particle velocity, particle volume flux, and particle size distribution were measured under different working conditions. The mean axial velocity and the particle volume flux in the central region of the burner outlet were found to be negative. This indicated that a central recirculation zone was formed in the center of the burner. In the central recirculation zone, the absolute value of the mean axial velocity and the particle volume flux increased when the external secondary air volume increased. The size of the central reflux zone remained stable when the air volume ratio changed. Along the direction of the jet, the peak value formed by the tertiary air gradually moved toward the center of the burner. This tertiary air was mixed with the peak value formed by the air in the adiabatic combustion chamber after the cross-section of x/d = 0.7. Large particles were concentrated near the wall area, and the particle size in the recirculation zone was small.展开更多
