In some remote, poverty-stricken areas and ethnic minority areas, there are free courses and schools specially for women as a measure. In 1992, the attendance rate for girls from 7 to 11 years old had risen to 96.2 percent from less than 20 percent before the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
