Play is a pleasurable physical or mental activity that enhances the child’s skills involving negotiation abilities,problem-solving,manual dexterity,sharing,decision-making,and working in a group.Play affects all the brain's areas, structures, and functions.Children with autism have adaptive behavior, adaptive response, and social interaction limitations. This review explores the different applications of play therapy in helping children with autism disorder.Play is usually significantly impaired in children with autism.Play therapy is mainly intended to help children to honor their unique mental abilities and developmental levels. The main aim of play therapy is to prevent or solve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal child-healthy growth and development.Play therapy helps children with autism to engage in play activities of their interest and choice to express themselves in the most comfortable ways.It changes their way of self-expression from unwanted behaviors to more non-injurious expressive behavior using toys or activities of their choice as their words.Play therapy also helps those children to experience feeling out various interaction styles.Every child with autism is unique and responds differently. Therefore, different types of intervention, like play therapy, could fit the differences in children with autism.Proper evaluation of the child is mandatory to evaluate which type fits the child more than the others. This narrative review revised the different types of play therapy that could fit children with autism in an evidence-based way.Despite weak evidence, play therapy still has potential benefits for patients and their families. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder(ADHD)is one of the most common disorders in child and adolescent psychiatry, with a prevalence of more than 5%.Despite extensive research on ADHD in the last 10 to 20 years, effective treatments are still lacking.Instead, the concept of ADHD seems to have become broader and more heterogeneous. Therefore, the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD remains challenging for clinicians.AIM To investigate the effects of a multimodal integrated intervention for children with ADHD.METHODS Between March 2019 and September 2020,a total of 100 children with ADHD who were diagnosed and treated at our hospital were assessed for eligibility, two of whom revoked their consent.A case-control study was conducted in which the children were equally assigned, using a randomized number table,to either a medication group(methylphenidate hydrochloride extended-release tablets and atomoxetine hydrochloride tablets)or a multimodal integrated intervention group(medication+parent training+behavior modification+sensory integration therapy+sand tray therapy),with 49 patients in each group. The clinical endpoint was the efficacy of the different intervention modalities.RESULTS The two groups of children with ADHD had comparable patient characteristics(P>0.05).Multimodal integrated intervention resulted in a significantly higher treatment efficacy(91.84%)than medication alone(75.51%)(P<0.05).Children who received the multimodal integrated intervention showed lower scores in the Conners Parent Symptom Questionnaire and the Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale than those treated with medication alone(P<0.05).The Sensory Integration Scale scores of children in the multimodal integrated intervention group were higher than those of children in the medication group(P<0.05).Children who received the multimodal integrated intervention had higher compliance and family satisfaction and a lower incidence of adverse events than those treated with medication alone(P<0.05).CONCLUSION Multimodal integrated intervention effectively alleviated symptoms associated with ADHD in children. It enhanced their memory and attention with high safety and parental satisfaction, demonstrating good potential for clinical promotion. 展开更多

Objective: To evaluate the effect of combined therapy of Chinese herbal medicine and compound cyproterone acetate (CPA) in treating non-obesity polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and to explore its mechanism in improving withdrawal ovulation. Methods: Eighty-six patients of non-obesity P-COS, typed as Shen-deficiency with blood stasis Syndrome or Shen-deficiency with Phlegm-Dampness Syndrome by Syndrome Differentiation in traditional Chines medicine, were randomly divided into three groups: (1) The TCM group (n = 26) was treated with Chinese drugs for 6 menstrual cycles; (2) The western medicine (WM) group (n=30) was treated with 1 tablet of CPA for 21 days, with the treatment beginning from the 5th day of menstruation. The treatment was given for 3 menstrual cycles by repetitious medication, which stopped and restarted on the 5th day of withdrawal bleeding. Then the ovulation promoting therapy was applied by using clomifene citrate and human chorionic gonadotropin (CC/hCG) for 3 menstrual cycles; (3) The TCM-WM group (n=30) was treated with the medications used for the above two groups. The menstrual cycle, the volume and duration of the menstruation, as well as the improvement of acne and pilosis [Ferriman-Gallway (F-G) scoring] were observed after 3 cycles ended. Moreover, condition of ovulation was monitored by B-ultrasonography at the 4th- 6th cycle and status of pregnancy was observed. Results: Compared with before treatment, the blood level of luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone (T) in all 3 groups after treatment significantly decreased (P<0. 05), with its ratio to follicle-stimulating hormone (LH/FSH) recovered to normal, but without markedly change in levels of FSH, estradiol (E2) and prolactin (PRL). The menstrual cycle in most patients got regular and acne significantly alleviated (P<0. 05), and the improvement of infrequent menstruation and acne was better in the WM group and the TCM-WM group than that in the TCM group, but pilosis showed no significant improvement in all three groups. The periodical ovulation rate in the TCM-WM group (73. 1%) and the WM group (68. 3%) was significantly higher than that in the TCM group (40%). The pregnancy rate in the TCM-WM group (53. 8%) was significantly higher than that in the other two groups (26.1% and 25% respectively, all P<0.05). Conclusion: Using combined therapy of TCM and composite CPA followed by o-vulation promoting agents of TCM and WM to treat patients of non-obesity PCOS could relieve the clinical symptoms, improve the abnormal blood level of sex hormones and significantly elevate the pregnancy rate. 展开更多

Objective: To analyze the clinical evaluation of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients receiving integrated Chinese and Western medicine therapy. Methods: One hundred and twenty patients were enrolled and randomly allocated to a control group or treatment group. Patients in the two groups received placebo and Bushen Huoxue Granule (补肾活血颗粒, BHG), respectively. Both groups received baseline levodopa and benserazide (Madopar). The effects of treatment were assessed monthly during the 9-month treatment. Means of evaluation included Unified PD Rating Scale (UPDRS) scores (Ⅱ and Ⅲ), sleep scale score, 10 m turn back test (getting up time, 10 m × 2 times, and turning time), timing motor test (TMT)-Ieft and TMT-right, which were treated as the dependent variables; and age, sex, duration of PD, Hoehn and Yahr (H-Y) stage and Madopar dosage of admitted PD patients were as the independent variables. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze these factors. Results: H-Y stage significantly affected UPDRSⅡ score, UPDRS Ⅲ score, and getting up time (P〈0.01). Madopar dosage and H-Y stage significantly affected the 10 m × 2 times (P〈0.05 or P〈0.01). Madopar dosage significantly affected the sleep scale score (P〈0.05). There were also significant correlations between age and TMT-left or TMT-right (P〈0.01), and duration of PD and TMT-right (P〈0.05). Conclusions: The six assessed means of clinical evaluation (including UPDRS Ⅱ and UPDRS Ⅲ scores, sleep scale score, getting up time, 10 m × 2 times, and turning time) are sensitive indexes in all PD patients. H-Y stage and Madopar dosage are the major factors influencing means of clinical assessment of PD treatment. 展开更多

Objective: To explore the mechanism ofintegrated traditional Chinese and Westernmedicine (TCM--WM ) therapy on chronicaplastic anemia (CAA). Methods: The RBClife span of 30 normal human subjects and 30patients with CAA were measured by sir labelled technique before and after TCM--WMtherapy. The morphology and distribution ofRBC membrane protein granules were observed by freeze fracture etching and transmission electron microscope. Results: The halflife of erythrocytes (RBC TI/2)was shortenedin CAA cases and there was a significant difference compared to healthy control (P <0. 01). After therapy, the RBC life span prolonged and approached the normal level. Before treatment, there existed abnormal in morphology, decrease in amount and uneven indistribution of protein granules in protoplasmicface (PF) and extracellular face (EF) of RBCmembrane. After treatment, the protein granules of RBC membrane was improved and approached to control. Conclusions: The morphology, amount, quality and distribution ofRBC membrane protein granule were closelyrelated to its life span. The therapeutic effectof TCM--WM was better than that of WMalone and it had a function both in stabilizingmembrane protein and extending the RBC lifespan. 展开更多

There is currently no drug or therapy that can cure the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19), which is highly contagious and can be life-threatening in severe cases. Therefore, seeking potential effective therapies is an urgent task. An older female at the Leishenshan Hospital in Wuhan, China, with a severe case of COVID-19 with significant shortness of breath and decrease in peripheral oxygen saturation(SpO_(2)),was treated using manual acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine granule formula Fuzheng Rescue Lung with Xuebijing Injection in addition to standard care. The patient’s breath rate, SpO_(2), heart rate, ratio of neutrophil/lymphocyte(NLR), ratio of monocyte/lymphocyte(MLR), C-reactive protein(CRP),and chest computed tomography were monitored. Acupuncture significantly improved the patient’s breathing function, increased SpO_(2), and decreased her heart rate. Chinese herbal medicine might make the effect of acupuncture more stable;the use of herbal medicine also seemed to accelerate the absorption of lung infection lesions when its dosage was increased. The combination of acupuncture and herbs decreased NLR from 14.14 to 5.83, MLR from 1.15 to 0.33 and CRP from 15.25 to 6.01 mg/L. These results indicate that acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, as adjuvants to standard care, might achieve better results in treating severe cases of COVID-19. 展开更多

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most popular diseases that cause menstrual dysfunction and infertility in women. The present paper is a brief retrospection on the progress in treatment of PCOS caused infertility with integrative Chinese and Western medicine (ICWM). It can be seen from these materials that using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) recipes formulated by Shen-replenishing herbs or acupuncture to reinforce Gan-Shen, regulate Chong-Ren Channels in treating PCOS, stable clinical efficacy could be obtained, with less adverse reaction, though the effect initiated somewhat late. Whereas, when Shen-replenishing recipe and acupuncture are combined with hormone or ovulation promoting drugs of Western medicine, the above-mentioned shortcomings would be overcome. So, this combined therapy is frequently used in clinical practice. 展开更多

Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of far infrared-emitting ceramics (cFIRs) in a model of persistent inflammatory hyperalgesia and to elucidate the possible mechanisms of these effects. Methods: Mice were injected with complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) and treated with cFIRs via place- ment on a pad impregnated with cFIRs on the bottom of the housing unit for different periods of time. Mice underwent mechanical hyperalgesia and edema assessments, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-10 levels were measured. Twenty-four hours after CFA injection and 30 min before cFIR treatment, mice were pretreated with a nonselective adenosinergic antagonist, caffeine, the selective adenosine receptor A antagonist, 1,3-dipropyl-8-cyclopentylxanthine (DPCPX), the selective cannabinoid receptor type 1 antagonist, AM281, the selective cannabinoid receptor type 2 antagonist, AM630, or the nonselective opioid receptor antagonist, naloxone, and mechanical hyperalge- sia was assessed. Results: cFIRs statistically (P 〈 0.05) decreased CFA-induced mechanical hyperalgesia (82.86 ±5.21)% in control group vs (56.67±9.54)% in cFIR group) and edema ((1699.0 ± 77.8) gm in control group vs (988.7±107.6) gm in cFIR group), cFIRs statistically (P 〈 0.05) reduced TNF-α (0.478± 0.072) pg/mg of protein in control group vs (0.273 ±0.055) pg/mg of protein in cFIR group) and IL-113 ((95.81 ± 3.95) pg/mg of protein in control group vs (80.61 ±4.71)pg/mg of protein in cFIR group) levels and statistically (P〈 0.05) increased IL-10 ((18.32 ±0.78) pg/mg of protein in control group vs (25.89 ±1.23) pg/mg of protein in cFIR group) levels in post-CFA-injected paws. Peripheral pre-administration of inhibitory neuroreceptor antagonists (caffeine, DPCPX, AM281, AM630 and naloxone) prevented the analgesic effects of cF1Rs (P 〈 0.05).Conclusion: These data provide additional support for the use of cFIRs in the treatment of painful inflam- matory conditions and contribute to our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms of the ther- apeutic effects of cFIRs. 展开更多

The use of alternative medicine(AM) in Australia dates back to its earliest times, with the indigenous medicine of the aboriginal peoples and the folk medicine of the early English settlers.AM has until recently existed quite separately from Western biomedicine(WB) and there has been little integration of the two systems. Now,referred to as complementary medicine(CM),there has been a movement over the last 20 years to include CM in WB mainstream practices.Varying degrees of success have been reported but for the discipline of oncology.Medical oncology(MO) in Australia is demanding CM provide high levels of evidence for any inclusion in cancer protocols. There are just now the beginnings of this integration, particularly as CM is now being taught in the public university system to a PhD level as well as the public demand for their medical doctors to communicate with their CM practitioners.MO specialists are now open to a dialogue with their CM counterparts. 展开更多
