Communication inevitably becomes an essential part of interaction among people in every part of the world.Foreign language course provides opportunities for those who need to improve their foreign language skills like...Communication inevitably becomes an essential part of interaction among people in every part of the world.Foreign language course provides opportunities for those who need to improve their foreign language skills like English,French,and German.However,this course finds some obstacles to the learning process like different curriculum,teaching technique,the background of the target language,pattern,as well as its culture.This research aims to dig out the learner’s obstacles and solutions in learning European language on communication at a foreign language course in Malang Raya.As the number of participants who put their interest more in learning European language course is growing,this research applied descriptive quantitative method by taking the population from the learners of European foreign language courses with purposive sampling.Meanwhile,the instrument used was a questionnaire,and it was analyzed by using the percentage formula.The finding shows that the obstacles to learning European communication consist of linguistic and non-linguistic obstacles,whereas the solutions done are various.展开更多

Considering these conditions, the local and global cultural interface seems an important i...With the globalization of English, the macro and micro cultures of the users of English around the world interact intensively. Considering these conditions, the local and global cultural interface seems an important issue which needs to be clarified in the materials and books used for learning English. Thus, the focus of this study was to explore the language learning policy of the new Iranian English course book at high schools, Prospect 1, recently published and taught for a year in Iran, in light of globalization and culture. This qualitative study was conducted through carrying out semi-structured interviews. The participants of this study were 30 teachers of Ministry of Education, who had the experience of teaching Prospect I for a year and they were mostly chosen from Mashhad and the rest from other cities of Khorasan province, Iran. The interview contained four main questions which were posed to the teachers. The findings of the study indicate that the language learning policy of Iran need to pay more attention to the learners' intercultural communicative competence because it mainly attempts at teaching English language focusing on the home culture in the Iranian context. The article ends with some pedagogical implications and more recommendations for developing research studies.展开更多

Assumi...This study aimed to examine some coursebooks of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to see whether they involve any cross-cultural topics belonging to different cultures from different countries in the world. Assuming that EFL coursebooks written after the communicative movements in foreign language teaching and learning in the 1970s and the 1980s would have a plenty of cross-cultural elements, it was expected to see these coursebooks would also have a lot of cross-cultural elements, especially regarding their publication dates. This study aimed to investigate to what extent teaching materials used in EFL setting involve intercultural elements. Accordingly, 5 coursebooks were evaluated, and topics and number of cross-cultural elements were presented. The coursebooks used in the study were published in 1998, 1999, 1999, 2001 and 2006 namely. However, as the results displayed, the frequency of cross-cultural elements were not mutually related to their publication dates. The distribution and frequency of cross-cultural elements were not balanced with the dates chronologically.展开更多
