The internal flow of a droplet in the nonlinear extensional flow field will exhibit more than two internal circulations with the variation of nonlinear intensity(E).In this paper,the effect of positions and sizes of i...The internal flow of a droplet in the nonlinear extensional flow field will exhibit more than two internal circulations with the variation of nonlinear intensity(E).In this paper,the effect of positions and sizes of internal circulations on internal mass transfer rate of a single spherical droplet in a nonlinear extensional flow field is studied and compared with that in a linear extensional flow field.The simulation results show that when E≥0,there are two symmetrical internal circulations in the droplet,which is the same with that in a linear extensional flow.The limit value of mass transfer rate Sh is 15,which is equal to that in a linear extensional flow,no matter how large E is.When E≤-3/7,the number of internal flow circulation of a droplet increase to four and the transfer rate Sh increases.When E=-1,the maximum internal transfer rate Sh equals 30 which is twice of that in a linear extensional flow.The generation of new flow circulations in droplets and the circulation positions will enhance mass transfer when E≤-3/7,which provides a new idea for enhancing the internal mass transfer rate of droplets.展开更多
The internal heat transfer of different gases in microporous media was investigated experimentally and numerically.The experimental test section had a sintered bronze porous media with average particle diameters from ...The internal heat transfer of different gases in microporous media was investigated experimentally and numerically.The experimental test section had a sintered bronze porous media with average particle diameters from 11 μm to 225 μm.The Knudsen numbers at the average inlet and outlet pressures of each test section varied from 0.0006 to 0.13 with porosities from 0.16 to 0.38.The particle-to-fluid heat transfer coefficients of air,CO 2 and helium in the microporous media were determined experimentally.The results show that the Nusselt numbers for the internal heat transfer in the microporous media decrease with decreasing the particle diameter,d p,and increasing Knudsen number for the same Reynolds number.For Kn>0.01,the rarefaction affects the internal heat transfer in the microporous media.A Nusselt number correlation was developed that includes the influence of rarefaction.The computational fluid dynamics(CFD) numerical simulation was carried out to do the pore scale simulation of internal heat transfer in the microporous media considering the rarefaction effect.Pore scale three-dimensional numerical simulations were also used to predict the particle-to-fluid heat transfer coefficients.The numerical results without slip-flow and temperature jump effects for Kn<0.01 corresponded well with the experimental data.The numerical results with slip-flow and temperature jump effects for 0.01<Kn<0.13 are lower than the numerical results without rarefaction effects,but closer to the experimental data.The numerical results with rarefaction effects can accurately simulate the unsteady heat transfer in the microporous media.展开更多

Safety performance functions(SPFs),or crash-prediction models,have played an important role in identifying the factors contributing to crashes,predicting crash counts and identifying hotspots.Since a great deal of tim...Safety performance functions(SPFs),or crash-prediction models,have played an important role in identifying the factors contributing to crashes,predicting crash counts and identifying hotspots.Since a great deal of time and effort is needed to estimate an SPF,previous studies have sought to determine the transferability of particular SPFs;that is,the extent to which they can be applied to data from other regions.Although many efforts have been made to examine micro-level SPF transferability,few studies have focused on macro-level SPF transferability.There has been little transferability analysis of macro-level SPFs in the international context,especially between western countries.This study therefore evaluates the transferability of SPFs for several states in the USA(Illinois,Florida and Colorado)and for Italy.The SPFs were developed using data from counties in the United States and provincias in Italy,and the results revealed multiple common significant variables between the two countries.Transferability indexes were then calculated between the SPFs.These showed that the Italy SPFs for total crashes and bicycle crashes were transferable to US data after calibration factors were applied,whereas the US SPFs for total and bicycle crashes,with the exception of the Colorado SPF,could not be transferred to the Italian data.On the other hand,none of the pedestrian SPFs developed was transferable to other countries.This paper provides insights into the applicability of macro-level SPFs between the USA and Italy,and shows a good potential for international SPF transferability.Nevertheless,further investigation is needed of SPF transferability between a wider range of countries.展开更多
