Natural hybridization, which often occurs between closely related species exhibiting sympatric or parapatric distributions,is an important source of genetic variation within populations. The closely related Jankowski’s Bunting(Emberiza jankowskii)and Meadow Bunting(E.cioides)are similar in morphology and genetics, occupy overlapping niches, and are sympatric in eastern Inner Mongolia.Previous studies have reported trans-species polymorphisms of alleles between the two species,as well as an unexpectedly high genetic diversity of the endangered E.jankowskii.We speculate that introgressive hybridization has occurred between the two species and contributed to the additional unexpected variation to E.jankowskii.We used mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2(ND2)gene and 15 nuclear microsatellite markers to compare the genetic diversity of E.jankowskii and E.cioides, and inferred the origin of trans-species polymorphisms between the two species by phylogenetic reconstruction and Bayesian cluster analysis. The two species could be clearly distinguished by population cluster analysis.Despite the large number of mutational differences,we still detected sharing of major haplotypes and the presence of hybrids between the two species. Our study confirmed that weak introgressive hybridization has occurred between sympatric E.jankowskii and E.cioides, which may be mediated by female E.cioides individuals, and that interspecific introgression has contributed to the maintenance of high genetic diversity in E.jankowskii.While being wary of the potential negative effects of introgressive hybridization,we suggest that expanding the habitat of E.jankowskii remains the most effective conservation strategy at present. 展开更多

In order to exploit the evolution and find novel low-molecular-weight glutenin subunit (LMW-GS) for improvement of common wheat quality, thirteen variants from a somatic hybrid introgression line II-12 between Triticum aestivum cv. Jinan 177 (JN177) and Agropyron elongatum were characterized via genomic PCR. Four clones were pseudogenes because they contained an internal stop codon. The remaining nine variants contained intact open reading frames (ORFs). Sequence alignment indicates that the proteins deduced from the nine ORFs have similar primary structure with LMW-GS cloned from its parents previously. However, they have some unique modifications in the structures. For example, EU292737 contains not only an extra Cys residue in the C-terminal domain but also a long repetitive domain. Both EU 159511 and EU292738 start their first Cys residue in the N-terminal repetitive domain, but not in the N-conserved domain traditionally. These structural alterations may have positive contributions to wheat flour quality. The results of phylogeny showed that most LMW-GS variances from 11-12 were homologous to those from parent JN177 and other wheat lines. The reason for quick evolution of LMW-GS in 11-12 was discussed. 展开更多

Stochastic introgression of alien DNA may impose a genomic stress to the recipient genome. Herein, we report that apparent de novo genomic rearrangements in 10 of 13 selected endogenous, lowcopy, and potentially active long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposons occurred in one or more of three rice lines studied that were introgressed by wild rice (Zizania latifolia Griseb.). For nine retrotransposons in which both the reverse-transcriptase (RT) region and the LTR region were available, largely concordant rearrangements occurred at both regions in five elements and at the RT region only in the remaining four elements. A marked proportion of the genomic changes was shared by two or all three introgression lines that were derived from a single F~ plant. This indicates that most of the genomic changes occurred at early developmental stages of the F~ somatic cells, which then gave rise to germline cells, and, hence, ensured inheritance of the changes to later generations. Possible causes and potential implications of the introgression-induced genomic rearrangements in LTR retrotransposons are discussed in the context of plant genome evolution and breeding. 展开更多
