We investigate the interface-guided mode of Lamb waves in a phononic crystal heterostructures plate, which is com- posed of two different semi-infinite phononic crystal (PC) plates. The interface-guided modes of the Lamb wave can be obtained by the lateral lattice slipping or by the interface longitudinal gliding. Significantly, it is observed that the condition to generate the interface-guided modes of the Lamb wave is more demanding than that of the studied fluid-fluid system. The interface-guided modes are strongly affected not only by the relative movement of the two semi-infinite PCs but also by the thickness of the PC plate. 展开更多

Topological interface state(TIS)of elastic wave has attracted significant research interest due to its potential prospects in strengthening acoustic energy and enhancing the signal accuracy of damage identification and quantification. However, previous implementations on the interface modes of surface waves are limited to the non-adjustable frequency band and unalterable mode width. Here,we demonstrate the tunable TIS and topological resonance state(TRS)of Rayleigh wave by using a shape memory alloy(SMA)stubbed semi-infinite one-dimensional(1D)solid phononic crystals(PnCs),which simultaneously possesses the adjustable mode width. The mechanism of tunability stems from the phase transformation of the SMA between the martensite at low temperature and the austenite at high temperature. The tunable TIS of Rayleigh wave is realized by combining two bandgap-opened PnCs with different Zak phases. The TRS with adjustable mode width is achieved in the heterostructures by adding PnCs with Dirac point to the middle of two bandgap-opened PnCs with different Zak phases, which exhibits the extraordinary robustness in contrast to the ordinary Fabry–Perot resonance state. This research provides new possibilities for the highly adjustable Rayleigh wave manipulation and find promising applications such as tunable energy harvesters,wide-mode filters, and high-sensitivity Rayleigh wave detectors. 展开更多

The mechanical models of interface crack for mode Ⅱ are given. By translating the governing equations into the generalized hi-harmonic equations, the stress functions containing two stress singularity exponents are derived with the help of a complex function method. Based on the boundary conditions, a system of non-homogeneous linear equations is found. Two real stress singularity exponents are determined be solving this system under appropriate conditions about bimaterial engineering parameters. According to the uniqueness theorem of limit, both the formulae of stress intensity factors and theoretical solutions of stress field near the interface crack tip are derived. When the two orthotropic materials are the same, the stress singularity exponents, stress intensity factors and stresses for mode II crack of the orthotropic single material are obtained. 展开更多

In this study, a work-of-fracture method using a three-point bend beam (3PBB) specimen, which is commonly used to determine the fracture energy of concrete, was adapted to evaluate the mode-I fracture and durability of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite-concrete bonded interfaces. Interface fracture properties were evaluated with established data reduction procedures. The proposed test method is primarily for use in evaluating the effects of freeze-thaw (F-T) and wet-dry (W-D) cycles that are the accelerated aging protocols on the mode-I fracture of carbon FRP-concrete bonded interfaces. The results of the mode-I fracture tests of F-T and W-D cycle-conditioned specimens show that both the critical load and fracture energy decrease as the number of cycles increases, and their degradation pattern has a nearly linear relationship with the number of cycles. However, compared with the effect of the F-T cycles, the critical load and fracture energy degrade at a slower rate with W-D cycles, which suggests that F-T cyclic conditioning causes more deterioration of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP)-concrete bonded interface. After 50 and 100 conditioning cycles, scaling of concrete was observed in all the specimens subjected to F-T cycles, but not in those subjected to W-D cycles. The examination of interface fracture surfaces along the bonded interfaces with varying numbers of F-T and W-D conditioning cycles shows that (1) cohesive failure of CFRP composites is not observed in all fractured surfaces; (2) for the control specimens that have not been exposed to any conditioning cycles, the majority of interface failure is a result of cohesive fracture of concrete (peeling of concrete from the concrete substrate), which means that the cracks mostly propagate within the concrete; and (3) as the number of F-T or W-D conditioning cycles increases, adhesive failure along the interface begins to emerge and gradually increases. It is thus concluded that the fracture properties (i.e., the critical load and fracture energy) of the bonded interface are controlled primarily by the concrete cohesive fracture before conditioning and by the adhesive interface fracture after many cycles of F-T or W-D conditioning. As demonstrated in this study, a test method using 3PBB specimens combined with a fictitious crack model and experimental conditioning protocols for durability can be used as an effective qualification method to test new hybrid material interface bonds and to evaluate durability-related effects on the interfaces. 展开更多

The flange butt joints of 1 mm-thick galvanized steel sheets were brazed with CuSi3 as filler metal at different laser heating modes. The microstructures and element distributions of joint interface were investigated by SEM and EDS.The results show that there is no obvious interface layer with the circular individual beam heating and lamellar Fe-Si intermetallic compound layer is found with dual-beam laser spot heating. With the irradiation of rectangular laser spot, the joint interface layer is also formed. The layer thickness is larger than that of dual-beam brazing and the layer shape is flat so that intermetallic compounds trend to grow into cellular crystals. Moreover, the interface layer shape also depends on its position in the joint.Under the high heat input, dendritic or granular intermetallic compounds dispersively distribute in brazing seam adjacent to the interface, which is caused by the melting or dissolving of the base metal.According to the results, the brazing quality can be controlled by laser heating mode and processing parameters. 展开更多

By the application of the theory of complex functions, asymmetrical dynamic propagation problems on mode Ⅲ interface crack are studied. The universal representations of analytical solutions are obtained by the approaches of self-similar function. The problems researched can be facilely transformed into Riemann-Hilbert problems and analytical solution to an asymmetrical propagation crack under the condition of point loads and unit-step loads, respectively, is acquired. After those solutions were used by superposition theorem, the solutions of arbitrarily complex problems could be attained. 展开更多

Two systems of non-homogeneous linear equations with 8 unknowns are obtained. This is done by introducing two stress functions containing 16 undetermined coefficients and two real stress singularity exponents with the help of boundary conditions.By solving the above systems of non-homogeneous linear equations, the two real stress singularity exponents can be determined when the double material parameters meet certain conditions. The expression of the stress function and all coefficients are obtained based on the uniqueness theorem of limit.By substituting these parameters into the corresponding mechanics equations, theoretical solutions to the stress intensity factor, the stress field and the displacement field near the crack tip of each material can be obtained when both discriminants of the characteristic equations are less than zero.Stress and displacement near the crack tip show mixed crack characteristics without stress oscillation and crack surface overlapping. As an example, when the two orthotropic materials are the same, the stress singularity exponent, the stress intensity factor, and expressions for the stress and the displacement fields of the orthotropic single materials can be derived. 展开更多

For a compression-shear mixed mode interface crack, it is difficult to solve the stress and strain fields considering the material viscosity, the crack-tip singularity, the frictional effect, and the mixed loading level. In this paper, a mechanical model of the dynamic propagation interface crack for the compression-shear mixed mode is proposed using an elastic-viscoplastic constitutive model. The governing equations of propagation crack interface at the crack-tip are given. The numerical analysis is performed for the interface crack of the compression-shear mixed mode by introducing a displacement function and some boundary conditions. The distributed regularities of stress field of the interface crack-tip are discussed with several special parameters. The final results show that the viscosity effect and the frictional contact effect on the crack surface and the mixed-load parameter are important factors in studying the mixed mode interface crack- tip fields. These fields are controlled by the viscosity coefficient, the Mach number, and the singularity exponent. 展开更多

The paper presents finite element modeling of crack tip blunting for numerical estimation of fracture parameter of a Mode I crack, in weak alloy steel, which is near and normal to the interface of elastically identical but stronger maraging steel. The bimetallic body is subjected to monotonic load in K dominated regime. Crack tip yield zone across the interface, treated as Dugdale’s cohesive zone, is isolated from the bimetallic domain and is modeled alone under the action of respective cohesive stress over yield zones for obtaining the contribution of mismatch between yield strength of the steels in crack energy release rate component, Jinterface. Effect of far field load on Jinterface is found separately from a theoretical model. Numerical and theoretical results of Jinterface are in good agreement. 展开更多

The problem of a mode-II crack interface of two bonded dissimilar materials close to and perpendicular to an imperfect is investigated. The imperfect interface is modelled by a linear spring with the vanishing thickness. The Fourier transform is used to solve the boundary-value problem and to derive a singular integral equation with the Cauchy kernel. The stress intensity factors near the left and right crack tips are evaluated by numerically solving the resulting equation. SeverM special cases of the mode-II crack problem with an imperfect interface are studied in detail. The effects of the interfacial imperfection on the stress intensity factors for a bimaterial system of aluminum and steel are shown graphically. The obtained observation reveals that the stress intensity factors are dependent on the interface parameters and vary between those with a fully debonded interface and those with a perfect interface. 展开更多

The aim of the present work is to investigate the numerical modeling of interfacial cracks that may appear at the interface between two isotropic elastic materials. The extended finite element method is employed to analyze brittle and bi-material interfacial fatigue crack growth by computing the mixed mode stress intensity factors(SIF). Three different approaches are introduced to compute the SIFs. In the first one, mixed mode SIF is deduced from the computation of the contour integral as per the classical J-integral method, whereas a displacement method is used to evaluate the SIF by using either one or two displacement jumps located along the crack path in the second and third approaches. The displacement jump method is rather classical for mono-materials,but has to our knowledge not been used up to now for a bimaterial. Hence, use of displacement jump for characterizing bi-material cracks constitutes the main contribution of the present study. Several benchmark tests including parametric studies are performed to show the effectiveness of these computational methodologies for SIF considering static and fatigue problems of bi-material structures. It is found that results based on the displacement jump methods are in a very good agreement with those of exact solutions, such as for the J-integral method, but with a larger domain of applicability and a better numerical efficiency(less time consuming and less spurious boundary effect). 展开更多

Shearing behavior and failure mechanism of bolt-grout interface are of great significance for load transfer capacity and design of rock bolting system. In this paper, direct shear tests on bolt-grout interfaces under constant normal load(CNL) conditions were conducted to investigate the effects of bolt profile(i.e.rib spacing and rib height) and grout mixture on the bolt-grout interface in terms of mechanical behaviors and failure modes.Test results showed that the peak shear strength and the deformation capacity of the bolt-grout interface are highly dependent on the bolt profile and grout mixture, suggesting that bolt performances can be optimized, which were unfortunately ignored in the previous studies.A new interface failure mode,i.e.'sheared-crush' mode, was proposed, which was characterized by progressive crush failure of the grout asperities between steel ribs during shearing. It was shown that the interface failure mode mainly depends on the normal stress level and rib spacing, compared with the rib height and grout mixture for the range of tested parameters in this study. 展开更多

A plane-strain unit-cell finite element model was proposed to study the effects of resin/sand interface adhesive and resin cohesive strength on the overall tensile strength of resin sand,as well as the fracture modes. The main micro-scale characteristics of the numerical model were extracted from the micrograph of resin sand specimens by three-dimensional X-ray microscopy(3 D-XRM).The extended finite element method(XFEM)and cohesive behavior method were employed to explicitly describe the resin fracture and sand/resin interface debonding, separately. The corresponding experimental observation of micro-scale failure behavior based on the scanning electron microscopy(SEM)was presented for a comparison. The numerical results show that the initial failure of the model occurs at the sand/resin interface, followed by consequent resin failure.Dependent on the resin cohesive strength, the location of resin failure varies from the central zones to resin neck arc zones.A typical mixed mode fracture is observed, which is consistent with the corresponding micro-scale experimental observation. When the resin cohesive strength ranges between 8 and 12 MPa,the resin cracks occur at the central zone of resin bridges and propagate perpendicularly to the tensile direction until through cracks happen. At a higher range(between 12 and 16 MPa),interface cracks cross with resin cracks, bonding bridges of resin sand are broken. The interface adhesive strength has a more significant effect on the overall tensile strength of resin sand than the resin cohesive strength. The overall tensile strength of resin sand increases first then keeps stable with the increase of the resin cohesive strength. This work attempts to establish a numerical model which accurately describes the complicated mixed mode fracture of resin sand, which is beneficial to understand deeply the fracture mechanism of resin sand. 展开更多

The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is believed to be the dominant instability mechanism for free shear flows at large Reynolds numbers. At small Reynolds numbers, a new instability mode is identified when the temporal instability of parallel viscous two fluid mixing layers is extended to current-fluid mud systems by considering a composite error function velocity profile. The new mode is caused by the large viscosity difference between the two fluids. This interfacial mode exists when the fluid mud boundary layer is sufficiently thin. Its performance is different from that of the Kelvin-Helmholtz mode. This mode has not yet been reported for interface instability problems with large viscosity contrasts. These results are essential for further stability analysis of flows relevant to the breaking up of this type of interface. 展开更多

A new node-pairs contact algorithm is proposed to deal with a composite material or bi-material interface crack face contact and friction problem (e.g., resistant coating and thermal barrier coatings) subjected to complicated load conditions. To decrease the calculation scale and calculation errors, the local Lagrange multipliers are solved only on a pair of contact nodes using the Jacobi iteration method, and the constraint modification of the tangential multipliers are required. After the calculation of the present node-pairs Lagrange multiplier, it is turned to next contact node-pairs until all node-pairs have finished. Compared with an ordinary contact algorithm, the new local node-pairs contact algorithm is allowed a more precise element on the contact face without the stiffness matrix singularity. The stress intensity factors (SIFs) and the contact region of an infinite plate central crack are calculated and show good agreement with those in the literature. The contact zone near the crack tip as well as its influence on singularity of stress fields are studied. Furthermore, the frictional contacts are also considered and found to have a significant influence on the SIFs. The normalized mode-II stress intensity factors KII for the friction coefficient decrease by 16% when f changes from 1 to 0. 展开更多

Free-interface dual-compatibility modal synthesis method(compatibility of both force and displacement on interfaces)is introduced to large-scale civil engineering structure to enhance computation efficiency. The basic equations of the method are first set up, and then the mode cut-off principle and the dividing principle are proposed. MATLAB is used for simulation in different frame structures. The simulation results demonstrate the applicability of this substructure method to civil engineering structures and the correctness of the proposed mode cut-off principle. Studies are also conducted on how to divide the whole structure for better computation efficiency while maintaining better precision. It is observed that the geometry and material properties should be considered, and the synthesis results would be more precise when the inflection points of the mode shapes are taken into consideration. Furthermore, the simulation performed on a large-scale high-rise connected structure further proves the feasibility and efficiency of this modal synthesis method compared with the traditional global method. It is also concluded from the simulation results that the fewer number of DOFs in each substructure will result in better computation efficiency, but too many substructures will be time-consuming due to the tedious synthesis procedures. Moreover, the substructures with free interface will introduce errors and reduce the precision dramatically, which should be avoided. 展开更多
