On indexing in the Web of Science and predicting journal impact factor

We discuss what document types account for the calculation of the journal impact factor (JIF) as published in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR). Based on a brief review of articles discussing how to predict JIFs and taking data differences between the Web of Science (WoS) and the JCR into account, we make our own predictions. Using data by cited-reference searching for Thomson Scientific's WoS, we predict 2007 impact factors (IFs) for several journals, such as Nature, Science, Learned Publishing and some Library and Information Sciences journals. Based on our colleagues' experiences we expect our predictions to be lower bounds for the official journal impact factors. We explain why it is useful to derive one's own journal impact factor.

2023:A year of accomplishments for the 13 Science Citation Index Expanded-and Emerging Sources Citation Index-indexed Baishideng journals

In 2023,Baishideng Publishing Group(Baishideng)routinely published 47 openaccess journals,including 46 English-language journals and 1 Chinese-language journal.Our successes were accomplished through the collective dedicated efforts of Baishideng staffs,Editorial Board Members,and Peer Reviewers.Among these 47 Baishideng journals,7 are included in the Science Citation Index Expanded(SCIE)and 6 in the Emerging Sources Citation Index(ESCI).With the support of Baishideng authors,company staffs,Editorial Board Members,and Peer Reviewers,the publication work of 2023 is about to be successfully completed.This editorial summarizes the 2023 activities and accomplishments of the 13 SCIEand ESCI-indexed Baishideng journals,outlines the Baishideng publishing policy changes and additions made this year,and highlights the unique advantages of Baishideng journals.

Integrity of the editing and publishing process is the basis for improving an academic journal’s Impact Factor

BACKGROUND Journal Impact Factor™(JIF)is often used to evaluate the relative reputation and quality of academic journals in their respective fields,and can greatly influence the quality and scope of subsequent manuscript submissions.Therefore,many if not all academic journals are interested in increasing their JIF,to improve their academic impact.AIM To determine the importance of the integrity of the editorial and publication process in improving the academic influence of academic journals and the JIF of academic journals.METHODS In this paper,we describe our statistical analysis of bibliometric factors-including the 2021 JIFs released in the Journal Citation Report™2022,discipline rankings,received and published articles in 2019-2021,and webpage visits and downloads-for seven journals published by Baishideng Publishing Group(Baishideng)and indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded™;ultimately,we introduce and discuss the editing and publishing processes of Baishideng’s journals in their entirety,as they form the basis for our objective of safeguarding and bolstering integrity in academic publication.RESULTS For the seven journals assessed,their 2021 JIFs were basically unchanged from 2020,with the current metric ranging from 5.374 for World Journal of Gastroenterology(WJG)to 1.534 for World Journal of Clinical Cases(WJCC).Further assessments of the journals’bibliometrics from 2019 to 2020,showed that World Journal of Stem Cells has the highest self-citation rate(1.43%)and World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery has the lowest(0.21%).Additionally,the total 3012 articles published during this period were cited by more than 20000 articles in approximately 8000 academic journals.Of note,the 1102 articles published in WJG were cited by articles in 3059 journals,among which 171 journals have a JIF of>10,including internationally renowned academic journals such as CA-A Cancer Journal for Clinicians(2021 JIF 286.130,record count:1),Lancet(2021 JIF 202.731,record count:4),Nature Reviews Immunology(2021 JIF 108.555,record count:2),Nature Reviews Gastroenterology&Hepatology(2021 JIF 73.082,record count:9),Lancet Gastroenterology&Hepatology(2021 JIF 45.042,record count:8),Gastroenterology(2021 JIF 33.883,record count:19),and Gut(2021 JIF 31.793,record count:21).This suggests that Baishideng’s journals have been widely recognized for their academic quality.In the Reference Citation Analysis(RCA)database,all seven Baishidengpublished journals obtained a 2022 Journal Article Influence Index(JAII).For example,WJG has a 2022 JAII of 22.048,ranking 18th out of 102 journals in the field of gastroenterology&hepatology in the RCA,with 469909 total citations(6/102)and 21313 total articles(5/102).The numbers of manuscripts received and published in 2021 were both higher than those in 2019-2020.For example,WJCC received a total of 3650 manuscripts in 2021,which is 91.1%higher than those in 2019-2020(average:1910 papers/year).In 2021,WJCC published 1296 articles,representing an increase of 105.1%compared to those in 2019-2020(average:632 articles/year).The numbers of webpage visits and downloads received by the seven journals have increased year by year.For example,the number of total visits received by WJG in 2019-2021 was 1974052 in 2019,2317835 in 2020(increased by 17.4%compared with that in 2019),and 2652555 in 2021(increased by 4.4%compared with that in 2020).The visitors were from more than 220 countries and regions worldwide,such as the United States,China,and the United Kingdom.Open access(OA)plays a vital role in improving the quality,efficiency,transparency,and integrity of academic journal publishing.From 2019 to 2021,a total of 5543 OA articles were published in the seven journals,of which 2083(37.6%)were invited and published free-of-charge.During the same period,1683 articles were published in WJG,and the authors were from more than 70 countries and regions.For the total 5543 articles published in the seven journals from 2019 to 2021,3903 article quality tracking reports were received after the online publication of these articles.The quality of the articles was further evaluated through the Baishideng’s article quality and author evaluation tracking system,with 4655 articles(84.0%)having received author evaluation and feedback,which contributes to tracking metrics for authors’satisfaction with the collective publication processes.From March 25,2021 to June 28,2022,the seven journals received a total of 424 reader evaluations and 229 letters from readers;this subsequent reader engagement demonstrates that the popularity of the published articles and the volume of their readership audience were improved through the reader evaluation system.CONCLUSION Ultimately,the findings from our bibliometric assessments indicate that establishing,promoting and actively practicing processes that safeguard and bolster the integrity of the editing and publication process also help to improve the academic influence of academic journals,which itself is the cornerstone for improving JIF.

2013 SCI Impact Factor being 1.788 for Journal of Natural Gas Chemistry

The SCI impact factor of Journal of Natural Gas Chemistry （JNGC） is 1.788, according to the ＂2013 Journal Citation Reports （JCR） Science Edition＂. This is the highest SCI impact factor for Journal of Natural Gas Chemistry since the journal was included in the Science Citation Index Expanded （SCIE） in 2007, and it ranks first among chemistry journals in China. Over the past decade, the Journal of Natural Gas Chemistry has become more and more international and has received large numbers of manuscripts concerning energy chemistry. In deed, nowadays enerzy chemistry is becoming one of the hot topics.

2011 SCI Impact Factor being 1.348 for Journal of Natural Gas Chemistry

The SCI impact factor of Journal of Natural Gas Chemistry （JNGC） is 1.348, according to the ＂2011 Journal Citation Reports （JCR） Science Edition＂. This is the highest SCI impact factor for Journal of Natural Gas Chemistry since the journal was included in the Science Citation Index Expanded （SCIE） in 2007, and it ranks first among chemistry journals in China.

入选“中国科技期刊卓越行动计划”的领军期刊与重点期刊的出版模式、发展路径与实践成效

以“中国科技期刊卓越行动计划”(以下简称“卓越计划”)为背景,重点研究了入选的22种领军期刊及29种重点期刊在发展现状、办刊模式、发展路径、实践成效4个方面的现状与所取得的成效。结果表明,入选期刊均秉承了良好的开放科学理念,从出版模式的开放获取程度到出版形式的多样性角度考量,都与期刊自身的发展起到了积极的正相关作用。通过Web of Science数据库,获得了2019年和2020年“卓越计划”资助前后期刊影响因子的变化趋势。22种领军期刊的影响因子全部实现了不同程度的提高,提升幅度从3.486%到108.205%不等;29种重点期刊中有26种期刊实现了提升,但也有3种期刊出现了微小的下跌趋势。26种期刊的影响因子的提升幅度从5.663%到78.414%。2022年,影响因子高于5的期刊中,领军期刊占比91%,重点期刊占比66%,且领军期刊中有5种期刊的影响因子高于20,占比23%(集中在细胞与免疫学方面),体现了领军期刊在国际影响力方面的突出成就。

《现代塑料加工应用》近年高被引文献分析

主要通过对CNKI(中国知网)公布的量化数据和收录的《现代塑料加工应用》2014—2023年刊载文献被引数据进行分析,科学遴选出高被引文献,提取出前50名(TOP50)。分析了该刊文献被引数据,特别是TOP50高被引文献题目、作者、机构、被引频次、下载量、发表时间、项目基金资助等相关数据,并分析了文献涉及的学科和领域,探究了该刊高被引文献特点和规律,研究了该刊曾在《中文核心期刊要目总览》中的重大变化,旨在为读者、作者投稿及行业期刊的选题制定、约稿组稿、稿件遴选、提高办刊影响力等提供思路。

我国中文科技期刊文种变更为中英文现象分析与思考

分析我国中文科技期刊文种变更现象,为我国科技期刊发展提供参考,助力我国科技期刊高质量发展。文章调查分析2017—2023年我国28种科技期刊文种变更的情况及原因。发现大部分期刊存在官方网站国际化程度不高、编委会国际化程度偏低、出版的英文论文占比较低、作者群集中于国内等问题。期刊变更文种的原因主要包括中文科技期刊竞争激烈、吸引更多优质稿源、提高期刊影响力、希望被国际数据库收录等。针对上述28种期刊存在的问题,结合我国建设世界一流科技期刊的目标进行思考,提出以下建议:优化科技期刊文种布局;优化学术评价体系;提高中英文科技期刊的国际化水平;加强期刊出版文种规范化。

新版CSSCI新增与剔除期刊的定量分析与对策研究

分析高校学报类期刊的论文出版与影响力现状并提出对策,对于学术期刊的健康成长和发展具有重要意义。文章对最新版CSSCI来源期刊(2021—2022)新增6种与剔除2种高校学报期刊从载文量、年被引次数、复合影响因子、综合影响因子、两年他引影响因子、学科分布及基金发表论文等方面进行定量分析,探究期刊发展规律和趋势。研究结果表明:新增与剔除期刊的论文发文量呈下降趋势,影响因子呈现差异,剔除期刊存在自引现象,期刊基金论文占比与其影响因子不相关,各期刊发文所属学科存在差异。基于以上研究结果提出的对策建议可为优化学术期刊提供重要参考。

我国文献计量学发展历程及其在科技期刊评价中的应用

文献计量学作为期刊评价的一个主要工具,在优化期刊质量、促进期刊良性发展中发挥着重要作用。对我国文献计量学的发展历程、文献计量学在期刊评价中的应用及存在的问题进行综述,在此基础上提出相应举措,指出今后仍应不断完善期刊评价指标和体系的建设。

我国SCI英文科技期刊影响力分析--以Journal of Arid Land为例

[目的/意义]解决我国多数SCI英文科技期刊的国际影响力较低的问题。[方法/过程]以Journal of Arid Land(简称JAL)为代表,基于Web of Science数据库,统计JAL创刊以来载文的被引情况,分析期刊发展的制约因素。[结果/结论 ]提出采取紧跟研究热点设置栏目,加强综述性论文约稿,重视选题策划,注重品牌建设,加快论文优先在线发表,引入新媒体、新技术扩大传播,加强对外宣传和交流等措施,提高英文期刊国际影响力。

Scientometric Implosion that Leads to Explosion: Case Study of Armenian Journals

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to introduce a new concept and term into the scientometric discourse and research—scientometric implosion—and test the idea on the example of the Armenian journals. The article argues that the existence of a compressed scientific area in the country makes pressure on the journals and after some time this pressure makes one or several journals explode—break the limited national scientific area and move to the international arena. As soon as one of the local journals breaks through this compressed space and appears at an international level, further explosion happens, which makes the other journals follow the same path.Design/methodology/approach: Our research is based on three international scientific databases—WoS, Scopus, and RISC CC, from where we have retrieved information about the Armenian journals indexed there and citations received by those journals and one national database—the Armenian Science Citation Index. Armenian Journal Impact Factor(ArmJIF) was calculated for the local Armenian journals based on the general impact factor formula. Journals were classified according to Gl?nzel and Schubert(2003). Findings: Our results show that the science policy developed by the scientific authorities of Armenia and the introduction of ArmJIF have made the Armenian journals comply with international standards and resulted in some local journals to break the national scientific territory and be indexed in international scientific databases of RISC, Scopus, and WoS. Apart from complying with technical requirements, the journals start publishing articles also in foreign languages. Although nearly half of the local journals are in the fields of social sciences and humanities, only one journal from that field is indexed in international scientific databases. Research limitation: One of the limitations of the study is that it was performed on the example of only one state and the second one is that more time passage is needed to firmly evaluate the results. However, the introduction of the concept can inspire other similar case study. Practical implications: The new term and relevant model offered in the article can practically be used for the development of national journals.Originality/value: The article proposes a new term and a concept in scientometrics.

高影响力中文期刊的识别与分档评价

从多维度融合的多源异构信息计量学指标来综合评估学术期刊影响力,为更准确掌握中文期刊影响力提供新思路和新方法。文章以“双碳”关注的能源动力类期刊为例,在完善量化评价机制的驱动下集成因子分析、独立信息数据波动赋权法、改进TOPSIS结合秩和比法等优势从多维视角出发开展实证研究以提升综合评价能力。相关结果揭示了各评价指标及维度间的相关性关系,所构建的评价方法结果虽与影响因子排名总体趋势相似,但更能全面评价和有效甄别出真正的高影响力期刊并实现合理分档。基于理论、方法和应用逻辑的学术期刊影响力评价研究结果合理可靠,具有相当的实操性、兼顾性和可推广性。

基于防止人为操纵的变权CSSCI来源期刊评价

[目的/意义]为了解决CSSCI来源期刊评价中评价指标可能存在的人为操纵,以及办刊时间过短导致的不公平问题,文章提出了一种新的基于防止人为操纵与评价指标变权的评价方法。[方法/过程]首先,对期刊过度自引和载文量偏低进行适当修正,得到合理影响因子。然后,根据办刊历史对总被引频次权重进行变权,当优秀期刊累计载文量偏低时,对影响因子的权重也进行变权修正。[结果/结论]基于图书馆、情报与文献学学科的CSSCI来源期刊在中国知网CNKI引文数据库的研究结果表明,存在一定程度的期刊过度自引与人为操纵载文量的现象。通过对传统CSSCI来源期刊评价方法进行改进,文章提出的CSSCI评价结果与传统CSSCI评价结果差异较大,更加凸显了新评价方法的重要性。

《宁波职业技术学院学报》2018—2023年主要计量指标分析及发展建议

运用文献计量内容分析法,对《宁波职业技术学院学报》2018—2023年的载文基本情况、出版时滞、栏目设置、基金论文、核心作者群、影响力指标数据等进行统计分析,发现学报存在部分问题,并提出有针对性地推介与宣传、把控出版时滞、优化栏目设置、培养核心作者群、强化向名家约稿等建议,以促进《宁波职业技术学院学报》的发展。

Comparison of evaluation indexes for Gastroenterology and Hepatology journals in different databases

BACKGROUND Accurate assessment of the quality of academic journals is of great significance.While Journal Impact Factor(JIF),calculated by Clarivate and based upon the Web of Science literature database,and CiteScore(CS),developed by Elseiver and based upon the Scopus database,have enjoyed high uptake worldwide,efforts continue towards creation of other scientometric indexes that will provide evergreater qualitative insights into journal impact.Such efforts have yielded the newly-launched Journal Article Influence Index(JAII),which is based on the Reference Citation Analysis(RCA)database,an open multidisciplinary citation analysis database based on artificial intelligence technology.AIM To evaluate and summarize the similarities and differences between JAII and JIF/CS as journal evaluation indicators,and provide an intuitive method for visual representation of the related data.METHODS We searched the Journal Citation Reports to obtain the 2021 JIF list,downloaded the CS list updated in July on the Scopus website,and collected the comprehensive list of 2022 JAIIs from the RCA database(www.referencecitationanalysis.com).RESULTS Our research results revealed that by breaking through the time limit of mainstream journalevaluation methods, the JAII is able to perform well in data reliability, establishing its benefit as acomplementary scientometric index to JIF and CS.CONCLUSIONJAII provides comprehensive assessment of the quality and performance of journals.
